Makeup & Beauty Tips on How to Keep Lips Nourished

Share your best tips and tricks for keeping your lips in their top shape! Feel free to share your experiences, how you mastered techniques, or what you struggle with.

My Tips

  1. Hydration — both in the form of lip balm as well as drinking plenty of water!  For me, a really good lip balm is one that hydrates even when it’s not on.  If I wear a lip balm but feel like I need more as soon as it’s faded away, it’s not hydrating enough in my book.
  2. Regular exfoliation is helpful for keeping lips soft, smooth, and supple.  A simple sugar scrub (a mix of sugar and an oil, like jojoba or olive oil) works well once or twice a week.
  3. Avoid really drying lipsticks and glosses; when you find one that is, it’s probably just not the right formula for you.  If it’s a formula that’s long-wearing and slightly drying, you might want to pat a little balm on top here and there throughout the day to combat it.  I like to give my lips a break or use more hydrating formulas between some of the more long-wearing ones (that can be drying).

What is your favorite lip balm? I haven’t found a great one yet…

    • I use Jack Black Lip Balm!

    • If you want some other suggestions (I’m a serious lip balm hoarder!), I use EOS, Aquaphor Lip Repair, Lush balm (fav is Honey Trap), Burt’s Bees, Alba Botanicals balm (fav is the Hawaiian lip balm in Coconut Cream), Fresh Sugar lip treatment, and pure extra virgin organic coconut oil (I put some in a small container and stick it in the fridge so it hardens!).

  2. Tellusrenee

Christine what are your favourite lip balms and most moisturizing lipsticks?

  3. I have a very bad habit of picking my lips when they get dry. Keeping a nice layer of lipstick on them helps me keep my mitts off them. A really good lip moisturizer at night (I like one from Clarins) followed by something waxy to seal it all in helps a lot and I keep lip balms handy for frequent reapplication.

  4. I love the Julep lip scrub! It’s the best one I have used for dry lips!

  5. Lim Ting

I use the tongue cleaner at the back of my toothbrush to exfoliate my lips! Gently of course!

I have very dry lips (or I used to) that for years prevented me from wearing lipstick. I have been using Lansinoh Lanolin (nursing mom’s nipple cream). This is pure lanolin. It is safe to have on the lips. It works. I always leave a very slight film on my lips before applying lipstick. I have tubes of this stuff everywhere..kitchen, bedside table, purse, car…well you get the picture. No scent or taste and fixes lips almost immediately.

Why didn’t I think of that? And I still have some leftover from my little vampire.

    • This stuff IS great. My husband uses it on his finger-tips because they crack in the wintertime (when I first gave him a tube, he looked at me quizzically, wondering if I was trying to tell him with had a 4th child on the way….). I only wish it came in something other than that tube because it is very hard to squeeze it out. I melt it in a cup of hot water and then transfer to a little jar. I need to remember to start using it again as it’s fallen by the wayside a bit. It’s also really good for heels and cuticles!

Lip balm: I have recently bought Nuxe Paris’ Rêve de Miel and find it a beautiful balm, particularly at night after I’ve cleansed my face, have nice clean hands (it’s a pot, so you need to apply with fingers). It sits on my bedside table and I apply every night before bed. A bit on the pricy side but luxe and I can see it lasting quite long. I also bought Dr Lipp original nipple balm for lips but find the consistency so thick! Dr Lipp would be for emergency cracked lips. I also fancy getting my hands on some of Lush’s lip scrubs for a gentle exfoliate (at the mo I just run my clarisonic over lips when doing my face).

  8. Applying a little oil on your naval daily helps keep the lips moisturised

trust me it is foolproof dear

and yeah milk cream (malai) with sugar is also a good exfoliater

    • On the belly button? Actually?

    • Pamela

I have heard about the oil or lotion in the naval before. I’m going to try it because it can’t hurt right?

    • FreeA

Oh so, i HAD to read up more on this because i have never heard of this before! I found this explanation on some other forum; anyone feel free to correct it because I would LOVE to know exactly how this works :)

      Here it is:

I read about leaving mustard oil in navel overnight. I guess it is an old Indian remedy for chapped lips, but it should not be applied directly on lips since it is irritating to mucus membranes.

Stimulant: Mustard Essential Oil is a very strong stimulant, just like Mustard Oil. It is particularly effective in stimulating circulation, digestion and excretion. This oil, if used externally for massage, stimulates circulation very well. The effects are even visible. It stimulates digestion by stimulating secretion of gastric juices and bile from spleen and liver. The excretory system is also stimulated by this oil since the peristaltic motion of the intestines is stimulated.

Diaphoretic: It promotes sweating both when consumed and applied externally. It stimulates sweat glands to produce more sweat as well as enlarges the openings of the pores on skin. This property is helpful in lowering body temperature as well as removing toxins and excess salts and water from the body.

Tonic: It tones up all the systems operating in the body, gives strength and boosts up immunity.

Wow, will ask ma about this!

  9. Oh what a treat! Thank you for sharing these beauty tips!

  10. Before i go to bed i slather vaseline on my lips, wake up and wipe it off. Nothing ever has even come close to making my lips as soft as this does!

I really have to emphasize the significance of hydration. A lot of people aren’t drinking the amount of water they think they need, particularly if they’re also ingesting caffeinated products and/or exercising on top of it. When I cut myself down to half a cup of coffee/tea a day and started carrying a water bottle with me, I saw a major difference in the amount of moisturizering I had to do on top of it.

I normally have extremely dry lips, but have been using both Jack Black’s (the best!) and Aquaphor for the past few months and have had no problems. This is a weather transition time, too, in Arkansas and we have had the heater on. I like them both because they are thick enough that they stay on your lips and absorb, rather than sliding off or feeling greasy.

I’ve been using Homeoplasmine by Boiron for about 3 years now, and it’s been a lifesaver for my lips! I believe it’s easier to get hold of it in Europe than the US, though, and much cheaper there. I’ve always had lips that chap and break really easily, especially during winter. I usually apply a generous layer of Homeoplasmine before going to bed, and the next morning my lips feel super moisturized. They don’t seem to “get used” to the formula either, like it happens with some products that stop working. As a bonus, it’s also great to put on pimples overnight to get rid of them 😀

  14. Grace

I always keep a lip balm in my bag.. the ones by Fresh are phenomenal but my favourite (and cheapest) is Blistex Simple and Sensitive, not only is it moisturizing but lasts quite long on the lips! Very impressed for a drug store brand..

  15. The best lip balm I’ve been using is one that I purchased from a local honey producer at the farmer’s market for $3. Actually works better for my perpetually dry lips than, say, Burts Bees, Baby Lips, and fancier ones from Jane Iredale and Fresh. I just want to throw that out there because it’s been eye-opening for me.

  16. I swear by Lansinoh for nursing mothers. It’s a nipple cream but it happens to be the most amazing lip balm EVER! I’ve been using it for years and haven’t had chapped lips since!

  17. Aditi

Hi Christine, how can I see only reviews for lip products with an A+ rating?

  18. My favorite lip balm is STILL Epically Epic’s lip balm. The only thing I’d pick about it is that it doesn’t always withstand hot weather due to the softness, and being in stick form, that often interferes with the winding mechanism. As for exfoliant, I used to rely on sugar scrubs, but nowadays I just run my wet toothbrush over my lips before brushing my teeth. Much easier to remember to do everytime.

Shea butter….it’s relatively cheap, smells slightly of nuts and works perfectly. Pure, unrefined Shea butter.

  20. Carmen

Sleeping with 8 hour lip balm from Elizabeth Arden. The next morning your lips are pure silk.
