  1. Depends…I usually go as needed. If there is something I want and I’d already been that week, or I need to exchange/return something I’ll go multiple times a week until I am happy…

  2. Living in a city with access to a lot of beauty counters, it’s rare that I don’t stop by at least one or two a week, either because I want to see what’s new, or because I’ve run out of some staple like concealer or black eye liner.

  3. GUSnail

I put down once a month as an average. There are times when I may go a couple of times in a week, and then there may be a couple of months where I don’t go to any. It just kind of depends.

  4. Telma

I do all my beauty shopping online!

  5. Nicoco Chanel

It varies so wildly I couldn’t pin it down. When I’m here, it might be once a month, because it requires a good trip to get anywhere (ahhh, living in a hamlet). When I get up to my mum’s, it could be every day because I’m going through withdrawl. I don’t shop online if I can attend the counter, so I do visit pretty frequently in general.

I do about 90% of my beauty shopping online. I really hate going to the counters and having to deal with the snobby or ill-informed salespeople. I’ll go to Sephora because they seem more reasonable, but I go there maybe once every two months.

I find that ULTA does a better job of leaving me alone to test out products then Sephora does. If you have one near you, check it out. They have testers and alcohol as well, everything you need to try on whatever you want. And they carry a lot of the same brands that Sephora carries like Urban Decay, Benefit, Too Faced, Smashbox, Stila, Bare Minerals, CARGO etc.

Honestly there seems to be so many extras when I order online that I really don’t bother with counters anymore. I research whatever I need to online and then either order from Sephora, Nordstrom or Additionally, the older I get the less tolerance I have for pushy SA’s that know waaay less about their product then I do.

    • Terri

Oh I so agree with you about the extras on-line!!! Why go to the store when you can get the same thing, on line with free shipping usually, plus lots of extra goodies? It’s seems like a no brainer for me. I do like going into Ulta though because it’s closer and looking around just to boost my spirits on a bad day. Makeup is my drug, what can I say?!

      • Lark

We just got an Ulta! Awesome place. They have NYX and Zoya, which I never bothered to try online but now I’m hooked on Zoya polish remover. They’re great for certain staples. But for high end, online is easy. Free shipping and no sales tax is worth it too.

I know what you mean with pushy SA’s…..they really ruin the shopping experience for me. Unless they are watching me like a hawk, I usually buy *something* if I’ve spend at least 10 minutes swatching stuff at the counter. A couple of days ago I took my mom to a freestanding MAC store for new makeup. I had her sit in one of the chairs while I grabbed some testers and applicators and before I even covered 1/5 of one of my moms eyes with eyeshadows the sales woman came up to her and in a really fake tone said “OMG I LOOOOOVE THAT COLOR ON YOU!!! DO YOU WANT ME TO GET IT FOR YOU”. Like geez lady, let me finish a look and have her look in a mirror and then she can decide whether she likes it or not. There’s a difference between being helpful and being pushy. And she was just plain pushy.

  8. Whenever I can make it to the major city nearest to me! Wish I had a few make up companies in my small town :(

  9. Susan

Depends if I have time to run through by myself. I’d say once a month on average, but I visit websites several times a week to check what’s new.

  10. A Mar

I don’t tend to go to stores or counters unless I’m really uncertain about a shade I’ve not used (or for limited edition items). I do a lot of shopping online. Quick shopping and a lot of selection!

  11. AnGeLwInGz

I find a lame excuse to go to Ulta at least once a week, usually for small stuff like razors that I could just as easily get at Walgreen’s across the street.

  12. Renee

Muhaha. Judging by the votes so far I’d say most people go on pay weeks and then are too broke to go again till next pay week. Yeah, that would include myself. Luckily I’ve been pretty good lately and save enough spending money so I can splurge again on my non pay week!

  13. t_zwiggy

I do most of my beauty shopping online (the exceptions are mascara and makeup remover), so probably about once a month. I do walk past a beauty store 3-4 times a week, though, and every single time I’m ogling the OPI polishes they display right at the entrance. It’s so hard not to be tempted to buy anything! The only thing that stops me is the price tag ($30 where I live), when I know I can get it for a third of that price online. Also, I have a really hard time walking into a store without buying anything, so I know it’s better for me to stay away.

  14. I do a lot of my cosmetic shopping online. As I’m in Australia I can generally get cheaper products from the UK and America online – and products I can’t get in Australia. Also, I get a pro discount that can generally only be used online with certain brands (Illamasqua, OCC etc)

  15. Nikki

I only go shopping for beauty products when I’m looking to add a new tool or product to my routine or to swatch products before buying them. Other than that, I usually shop online.

  16. Raquel

i go probably twice a month but that doesnt mean that i buy something!!

  17. Veronica

I usually go about once a month. I prefer to see pricier cosmetics in person before purchasing, so I make a list of everything I want and get it all in one sweep when I go to the mall. Occasionally, I’ll dip into my local Ulta when I’m grocery shopping – since it’s literally right next door – but that’s about it.

  18. niche

I try to avoid going to the makeup counter as much as possible because I can’t visit a counter without buying many things. So I end up going once a month (maybe less) when I see something you reviewed that seems amazing but I want to see it in person first rather than just buy it online.

  19. Jade

I chose other because it changes all the time. Sometimes it’s more than once a week, other times it’s once a month. I need to start avoiding because I just signed up to study fulltime… goodbye disposable income!!

  20. Brittany

Other – I work at one, so I felt that answering ‘More than once a week’ would skew the data hahah.

  21. megan

It used to be weekly, but I’ve calmed down alot LOL Now it’s once or twice a month, that I go with the purpose to buy something. But whenever I go to Target, in particular, I take a look at the cosmetics section.

  22. Alice

as long as I have a choice, I avoid it! I hate the “being observed” feeling and unfortunately we still don’t have a sephora around… so online it is!

  23. Lark

I’m going to counters rarely now. I’m buying good stuff at drugstores, or some high end at or Guerlain online. I have a list of practical investments.
I have a huge amount of make up, so I’m avoiding temptation. Not a no buy but only well considered buys. Shopping my stash for looks. No counters means no impulse buys. The occasional snag at Walgreens isn’t the killer a department store is.

  24. jo

I go to the counters when a GWP is only available there or I must impatiently get something right away because I’ve run out of something or would really like a new product asap. Otherwise online is the way to go for me. Most of my buying is done online. I get most of my Estee Lauder items from Sears onine or at the counter.

  25. Ashley Sarah

I work at Macy’s within the cosmetic/fragrance department, therefore I am surrounded by it every day! It’s pretty dangerous! lol

  26. lily

I buy something beauty related 1-2 times a month, sometimes I stock up so that I dont have to go to the store as often. I love testing new makeup all the time!! Good fun!

  27. L

I only shop online for my beauty products because of where is live; it is too isolated to go anywhere in person to shop.

  28. I go when Christine puts out a good review on her blog regarding my favorite brands. I go to counter 95% of the time. That 5% of the time is when Urban Decay or MAC puts out something that is not going to be in stores yet. I rarely rarely buy without swatching/ testing… I love going to the counters. I can deal with the SA. I just walk away from them or I go swatch away when they are with someone else. They leave me alone until I need them. Part of buying makeup is the experience of testing it before I buy…..None of the colors presented on Saks website looks anything like the real thing.
