Temptalia Asks You

How long does lipstick usually last on you? Ever make it through eating/drinking?

Temptalia's Answer.

I’d say the average is around three hours, but there are definitely some brands/shades that will last through eating/drinking for the most part.  You’ll always have a tendency to lose some of the sheen/glossiness but most of the color remains.

Usually they last abour an hour for me, but if i put lipgloss on over they last a half hour or so longer. :)

What happened to those monthly newsletter-type emails? :(

    • Hi Annie,

Really sorry about that — I am behind on just about everything right now – comments, the newsletter, projects (The Dupe List, database, Foundation Matrix) — trying desperately to catch up. The heavy moderation of the Rodarte post kind of took up the past 3-4 days, but I’m really hoping to work on the newsletter in the next couple of days.

      • halo

i feel bad for you i mean with all those rodarte updates my fingers would be bleeding by now lol

      • Annie

Aw, I see. Thank you for all the work you put into temptalia! I think I’d be lost without you. Remember to save some time for yourself too :)

  3. Diana

i would say around an hour for me

  4. Azaza

About an hour and a half with just lipstick on but if I put a good lipgloss on top, it would stay for about 3 hours or until I eat, then I have to touch it up

  5. About 1-2 hours. Which brand do you find lasts the best?

    • Guerlain Rouge G, Chanel Rouge Allure, Cle de Peau Extra Silky, Tom Ford, La Prairie

      • baby in a corner

have you reviewed tom ford christine? I would love to see a review, maybe there was one sometimes I forget! Thanks, I love your lipstick reviews the best, they are just so true to life!

      • Thank you so much for replying! I think it is absolutely amazing that you take the time to get back to everyone! Your awesome :D

3 to 4 hours , most shades do not survive eating , only the very opaque or dark shades can make it

  7. ColleenAndrea

I get frustrated with lipstick. Only lasts maybe 45 min on me. I wear lip stains instead.

  8. Suzanne

About 5 hrs. I layer lipliner, lipstick and gloss ontop..gets me thru most of the day

    • Same here. I apply my lipstick with a heavy hand and I layer as well. I also eat my meals with my teeth biting the fork instead of my lips unless its a sandwich or something and I use straws all day. I never reapply my lipstick, I never have the time. When I get home I usually have it on still.

  9. however long until my next meal takes place! :)

  10. They last forever on me when I’m not eating (it’ll survive a snack and drinks). I just wipe off lipstick before I eat. Opaque lipsticks leave a nice stain if I don’t though.

Probably 4-5 hour because by then my lips dry up (MAC lipsticks) and then I’ll wipe off the dry skin/lipstick and reapply. I think only Clinique’s lipsticks goes away in an hour for some reason.

  11. shilpa

30 min ..at the most/.i tend to eat up my lipstick…..

  12. about one or two hours- i’m a compulsive lip biter/licker/chewer/everything else that spells bad news to lip products!

  13. Yumi

usually lasts about 3 hours unless i eat something, in which case it’s guaranteed gone :<

  14. Lulle

They usually last as long as I don’t drink or eat. Very few survive then.
I find that using lip balm just before applying lipstick makes it last really less long, so I try to wait for the balm to be totally absorbed before putting on any lipstick.

  15. Does Pro longwear by mac count? that lasts me at least a good 5 hours. Otherwise it’s an hour or two.

  16. silvia

I don’t know exactly ..after eating I use to wipe my mouth, so it is all gone anyway. but I have another question: now that temperatures rise (37°c) I have the impression that my creamsheens and slimshines are kind of melting. also a cream blush starts sweating. anything I can do? in the fridge? thanks for advice!

  17. Hilana

Since I tend to go for sheer lips they tend not to last long at all. Hour, 2 hours at the most. If I do a stain and then some lipstick on top of that, it tends to last longer, but I constantly apply lipstick throughout the day.

  18. Julie

I eat and drink and talk alot, even a long lasting lipstick doesn’t last on me. So I’d say about an hour =)

  19. Jennifer

it varies so much. it can last from 1 to 6 hours depending on the shade, texture, lipglossness

  20. When first applied, it can last pretty long. My lips are very dry so the colour tends to sink in a bit. But when applied for a second time, it always start bleeding on the upper lip, no matter what i do.
I love lipstick, but i hate the lines that get created when it starts bleeding, which makes me lay down the lipsticks far more then id want to.

  21. Refinement

Usually 1-1/2 hours. I consume a lot of liquids so my lipstick tends to get stuck onto the cup or bottle. I heard that using a corresponding lip liner helps it last longer but I’ve never had luck with that :-(

  22. Matte lipsticks with dry formulations tend to last slightly longer than the creamier texture of lipsticks with more sheen. Still, most will last only a few hours at best. It raises the question of which is best…lipstick or lipgloss? http://cassandraraeferguson.com.au/blog/?p=811

  23. Erin

NEVER! LOL…I usually wipe it off so I can eat….and I am always stuffin’ my face !

  24. Around 2 hours, if i eat or drink it tends to fade but doesnt entirely go away.

  25. Ru

Usually 2-3 hours alone, never past a meal. If I use lip liner under, sometimes that stays after eating. I’ll have to try some of those longer lasting brands you recommended Christine!

  26. I would say about 3-4 ours…I powder my lips first and that seems to hold the lipstick better…I also prevents feathering.

  27. Corinne

My Urban Decay lipsticks tend to last about 2-4 hours if I use the Lip Primer potion underneath. I haven’t tried them without it so I don’t know how long just plain. Now Urban Decay’s Lip stains on naked lips lasts a good 6-8 hours or more for me with no issues. I wish they had more than the 2 colours they offer.

I have a lipstick I picked up in Qatar about 5 years ago that OMG works as good if not better than a lipstain on naked. I LOVE this lipstick and have been meaning to google it to find out if it’s still made.

I’ve also used Este Lauder’s Double Wear duos on naked lips but I found that the lipstick would crack and peel something terrible after about 3-4 hours if i didn’t reapply the gloss regularly. I found that annoying and a waste of gloss since I would run out of the gloss WAY before the lipstain.

  28. Cynthia M.

like said, it really depends on the brand. since most of my l/s are MAC, i have to say the Satins last longest for me, almost 5-6 hrs. w/o touch-ups! lustres don’t last nearly as long, like maybe 3-4 hrs. glosses of course, even less, like 3 hrs. NYX l/s are pretty good and last a good 4-5 hrs.

  29. Now that I’m teaching myself to use lipliner, a good matte or satin shade will stick around for about 4 or 5 hours, but it will be dulled down. Without liner, I can get about an hour out of them. Glaze finishes will last about 2 hours. I don’t wear gloss over top, because it just feels like too much, and starts getting gloopy.

  30. cass

Hm, I’ve had a mac lipstick/lipgloss combos last from me leaving the house, going through my commute, and through till lunch. Maybe I’m just careful when I eat breakfast? But I still see it there around 10-11, and I’ll usually put it on around 7am!!

  31. Michou

An hour to two hours, because I’m terrible and am a constant lip masher. Gloss lasts longer on me b/c the stickier nature of the gloss will stop me from smooshing it all around. :P

Though, even though most of it is gone, most lippies will leave a bit of a staining to my lips that I adore for up to four hours. :)

  32. The duration of my lipstick depends on a lot on eating, drinking, etc. I’d say, on average, it lasts anywhere from 2-3 hours. However, lipstick has taught me not to lick my lips — an invaluable lesson!

  33. elise

    30 mins.-45 mins. I talk too much and have a lip-licking habit that I’m trying to break :Z re-apply, re-apply…

  34. Ashley

    Like an hour for myself.

  35. I honestly never know or care. If I’m wearing it at home(most days), I apply it once, and then don’t look ever again. If I’m out in public, I find it soothes my social anxieties to have an excuse to go to the bathroom and reapply. So I reapply it frequently anyways. Or throw gloss over top. Or something. Either way, I rarely notice lipstick fading, or how well it wears.

  36. Deb

It varies by the brand, but I got about 5 hours out of MAC Underworld once! I did a little eating and drinking, but mostly I was watching Penn & Teller live in Las Vegas, so I wonder if that counts.

But usually I can get around 3 hours without reapplying. I kind of like to reapply, though, because otherwise, I’ll never finish any of my products!

  37. LNU

Yea I’d say three hours too! I’m a fan of creamy and more sheer textures that never feel heavy on lips! I can’t do matte lipsticks for the life of me, hate the way they look on my lips. Victorias Secrets lipsticks as far as texture goes have always been my favorite!

  38. Normal lipstick lasts about 1-2 hours, if I don’t eat or drink at all then maybe a bit longer, but if I eat anything that needs biting, then it’s all gone. If I know I’m eating, I use one of the longlasting liquid colours like Mac’s and Max Factor Lipfinity.

  39. Miss Dee Canada

Mine would probably last longer, but I tend to tissue it off after an hour cause it starts to annoy me!

  40. Not very long. I can get through drinking if I’m careful (though I’m usually not) but I definitely can’t make it through eating. I don’t think I’ve found any lipstick that lasted the whole day. I guess that’s why they invented stains.

  41. Charlene

My lime crime lipsticks usually last through eating IF I dont use gloss on top.
Most of the time I lick my lipsticks off w/i 2 hours. LOL

  42. Not long. I eat 5-6 times a day and I drink 2.5 liters of water a day. I’m constantly reapplying. *shrugs*

  43. regular lipstick: 1-2 hours. Glosses: 30minutes-1 hr.

MAC prolong wear, however, lasts all day. I put “coco fix” on yesterday morning at 7 am. It stayed on through an 8 hour work day, followed by a 5pm teeth cleaning at the dentist! That has to be a record!

  44. Jenn

Lipsticks last an hour or so on me, and glosses about 30 minutes. Am I crazy? I don’t think there’s a “wrong” way to wear lip products, but if there is, I’ve got it down pat. I don’t even bother with lipcolor 90% of the time. When I do, I blow through a tube in a matter of weeks.

  45. Leenie

My lipstick usually last about three hours if I’m not kissing on my husband or eating or drinking.

  46. Karen Chalmers

Normally about an hour….. its normally only just there by the time i get to work…

  47. nah.doesnt even last long..maybe cos i keep licking my lips
