I really liked this dress, I wish the sleeves covered all the way around, it would have been a better look. I have the same arm issue and sometimes while a dress is pretty a small change can make it look far better.

  2. Up close her skin looks super oily. but from far away she looks nice and glowy.

  3. angel

cute dress…makeup needs to open her eyes more

  4. Jazz

Love her hair and the color of the dress. Idk about the actual dress though

  5. Caitlin

She was working that dress! I love her confidence and the dress is really beautiful.

  6. Alix

Love the lips, love the dress!

  7. Lorna

    nice lashes and great dress

  8. Steph

I really don’t like the close-up of her skin, but from far away it looks dewy. And I’m not trying to be harsh, but she really needs sleeves. Like the woman in the black behind her: that would have been nice and not emphasized her arms.

    • Christina

I was thinking the lady in the black dress was her mom. I do love the color of her dress.

  9. sf

I love her dress its a gorgeous color and very flattering. She looks very old Hollywood…the curls and the makeup…

  10. I kind of tired of the dark lips on her, and brown women in general. Medium to bright colors can really brighten the face. I’m a NW43, so a bit lighter than, yet pink is my best friend. Ya know, assuming it isn’t porn star or bubble gum pink.

  11. MsKianaluv

she worked her dress well :) love her look, but what’s up with the guy over her right shoulder!?

  12. T

Love it, love it, love it!!!!!!!

Up close her skin just looks like smooth obsidian, not oily.

  13. MsKianaluv

she worked her dress well :) unique color and a different style from everyone else; but what’s up with the guy over her right shoulder!?

  14. Good choice in the dress color….compliments her skin tone….

  15. Love the dress but the first picture was taken in such an awkward angle and weird lighting…

  16. Kate

Love the shade of this dress and the jewel accents. She looks lovely.

  17. I gotta agree with the others that Gaby looks oily in the close up but nice and dewy in the head to toe shot. I love her dress. It actually reminds me of this Forever21 top that I got yesterday which was black and has a silver roses across the top, almost like how Gaby silvery design is.

  18. Kalee

i liked it. but i dont know if anyone else has noticed the guy in the back with the glasses on….the “wtf” look on his face…get out of the picture! lol =]

  19. Nicole

This is such a gorgeous look for her! I love the color, and I think the dress is really flattering. She radiates a lot more confidence than many so-called “prettier” celebrities. There’s so much more to beauty than looking like Megan Fox…or whoever we’re supposed to be idolizing this week.

  20. Hilana

I am really sorry to say, but this woman is so obese that nothing could look good on her. And nothing would “open up” her eyes, because they are literally closed up by the fat. And her face looks like an oil slick.
When she was doing her pre-Oscar speech, I was so fixed on all that fat hanging from her arms that I could not listen to a word she said.
Sorry. I don’t try to be mean, but for such a young person to be so fat is just not acceptable.

    • Andreita

I’m so sorry you girls have to be critical and especially of another women, true…she isn’t in the ideal weight and is unhealthy, but you don’t know the circumstances on why she is in that weight not everyone is born privileged with threadmills and good diets(which we all know buying healthy food isn’t cheap)etc..etc…She might not be the ideal girl…but is her I see up there…Not You.

      • Siledhel

I didn’t want to comment, BUT, I’ve been a little “perceptive” about this issue lately.

I’ve noticed how people become very defensive when someone comments or criticizes someones weight, IF the subject is Overweight.

I’m SURE that if the girl in the picture was apparently anorexic, the general opinion would be that she looks horrendous and sick, and no one would dare to contradict that opinion.

I believe one must be polite without being condescending. And confident, without living in denial.
Any extreme is unhealthy and it’s wrong. It worries me that some of the positive comments could be sending the wrong message to some girls, in the same level as some of the negative could be affecting sensitive ones.

AND… Christine, please forgive us for using your blog for this kind of discussions. I’m conscious we are a little out of line, I just couldn’t keep quiet.

        • This is a great comment – I agree with you 100%

Her weight is absolutely unhealthy, just as being anorexic would be, and it sends a bad message to everyone.

        • Andreita

I agree with this…but FAT,ugly, hideous, horrendus are NOT words to describe this lovely lady especially here in this website that is dedicated to the beauty of the women(and some men) and empowerment, advice and tips, not to point fingers because It doesn’t fits someone standarts of beauty.

          • T

I agree. When all these skinny unhealthy girls were walking around I didnt hear enough people complain. They all looked like ghastly skeletons and they were sending all types of wrong messages that young girls were following.

    • Siledhel

      Remember Donette; no namecalling.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion. And not because they don’t agree with you, it doesn’t mean that they are ignorant. Some may be rude but by accusing you are being as rude as them.
Of course not everyone is meant to be a size 0, but as I said, I don’t think unhealthy it’s beautiful.

I also think that physically she is not beautiful. It’s my own opinion
If she is a beautiful person, I don’t know, I’ve never met her.
About her performance, I have no idea, I never saw the movie.
About her hair and makeup. I believe they made a good job with her hair, the face, they made her look oily, not radiant.

Does she look happy? absolutely! how couldn’t she?
Does she look confident? yes, she seems comfortable with herself. But I hope that she loves herself enough to realize that she needs to do something for her health, and that she is careful not to let offensive comments like some above affect her so much, that she could take dangerous measures that can put her life at more risk

    • Marie

I agree. I’m a slim American and people treat me as though I’m being unpatriotic by exercising and never eating junk food. It’s completely backwards here! It gets worse in small towns where many people are actually sphere-shaped.

    • T

If she cant look good then I know kristen steward cant look good or happy for that matter in anyway possible.

    • Kelly

I agree… she may be nice, and talented, but her weight is UNHEALTHY. It’s not about critisizing her weight because it’s not “beautiful” its because it is down right BAD for her. She is only 26yrs old… she should lose weight for her HEALTH. Not for the sake of Hollywood, but her own personal well being. Queen Latifah isn’t a stick figure and she looks amazing, she is HEALTHY. But Gabby is unhealthy and for anyone to say she is is blind. For the woman who commented on not having access to a treadmill, or healthy foods… for God’s sake obviously Gabby has access to both… she is in HOLLYWOOD && a famous actress.

      • Alyson

You must not know anything about this girl. Her ‘fame’ only came on after Precious– which she auditioned for by skipping school. She was hoping to make some extra money. She doesn’t come from a privileged background by any means.

  21. Marissa

Wow, can we be a little more positive? Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and we need to appreciate everyone.

  22. katt

The color and the cut of the dress are fine… but those sleeves and the appliques have got to go – looks very pageant-y. I would have pulled those bangs back also, to open the face up more. All around though, she’s a lovely girl.

  23. Kathleen

I think she looks fan-freaking-tastic. You can tell she’s having the time of her life, and that dress is beautiful. I don’t think she needs to cover her arms any more. Just because she’s a plus size girl doesn’t mean she has to wear something matronly. She looks youthful and beautiful. And confident!

  24. I’m so clueless, since I don’t know who she is, pfft.

That is a really flattering dress though and the color and the gems embroidered in it look really good on her. The curls are a really nice touch too. The first photo was taken at an odd angle though. :/ Otherwise, she looks really nice and glowy from afar.

  25. Daphnee

She looks like she’s been sweating but I’m sure walking the red carpet was probably stressful for her. I don’t know why her MUA chose a dark (probably black) color for her brows. Plus, her neck is darker than her face??? What’s that about?

    • Andreita

Her neck is darker due to restriccion of the insuline, her body uses the sugar she consumes in the food she eats instead of the ones her body already has to work(its a long thing to explain) which also prevents her from loosing weight…:/

      • Has she said she has this health condition? A little known fact about skin discoloration: chafing/rubbing can also cause darkening over time. It may not be insulin resistance.

        • Andreita

No she didn’t mention it, I should have clarify that, It could be Acanthosis Nigricans or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS) both of those conditions cause the neck to darken especially if you are obese.About chaffing or rubbing it could be that too idk.

          • T

Could be but also alot fo ppl just dont cleanse the neck area well and that could just as easily be it.

            • Andreita

That too could be…many people tend to neglect the neck area.

            • T

I have pcos as well and skin discolorations in addition not all overweight ppl have the insulin restiction issue their pancareas works just fine in more cases that the mass media would have us think.

  26. the dress is lovely…both the color and the detailing on them…
she was so confident!!! I mean other ‘stars’ of her age were very concious (kristen, MIley)…anna kendrik was cool too….

  27. condesa

sorry but this is really … off. the makeup is horrendous; face is full of discoloration (=pls have some good facials beore the Oscars!!), oils are flowing around. Hairdo is something seen in the sixties perhaps, looks like it has done by the neighbor haidresser.
They could have done MUCH better with her (the dress is OK).

  28. kellyk

She is cute!! thankfully she didn’t wear a boring black dress, i like the color and detail but more arm coverage would be great, just to make her arms look longer

  29. Nathalie

Beautiful dress but the reality is that I hope all the money this girl is making right now will help her with her health problem. All this weight is unhealthy. There’s no use in wearing a gorgeous dress if you look like you’re going to have a heart attack any second. I feel bad for her.

    • T

I dont feel bad for her at all. She looks great. Alot of sticks on the runway like kirsten steward and miley cyrus is who I feel sorry for not a feminine shape in sight.

      • Kelly

How are Miley Cyrus && Kristen Stewart sticks?? They look HEALTHY to me. Stick status would be the Olson Twins.

        • T

I wouldnt say they look healthy b/c kristen always looks like shes lacking color(or happiness for that matter. They are always hunching, looks like they may have osteoperosis later on too.

  30. MissDeeCanada

She looked GORGEOUS! I bet you ALL the plus sized companies were DYING to dress her for such an event!

  31. Elle

That is an ignorant comment, she looks good and the dress is gorgeous.

  32. The dress color is gorgeous for her! The dress itself, ehh, it’s one of the better looks I have seen her in! Up close, her makeup looks greasy and oily, but from far away looks nice.

  33. Lauren

Maybe, like everyone else, she has the right to wear what she wants and what she feels happy in. If you don’t like it, look away. I didn’t realise that we should all be taking everyone’s personal preferences into account before we get dressed in the morning.

    I think she looks great.

  34. Shangrila

i love the neutral makeup. she’s wearing a bold color in her dress, i think the neutral makeup is a good balance. i love the flowy-ness of the dress, i just wish it didnt have the appliques on it.

  35. Brooke

Are you kidding me? When she smiles, her whole face is radiant. She has a bubbly personality and attractiveness just shines from her when she’s being interviewed.

  36. PLEASE keep it clean, everyone! Please, no name calling!

  37. i love those lips, i think maybe there was a bit of bobbi brown avtion going on there? the chrome collection for winter 2009 had a silvery lipstick that i think looks quite a lot like what shes got on :)

  38. Kacie

Wow it’s sad to see some of these ignorant comments. I’m gonna go ahead and throw my two cents in the mix. She is a happy young woman who was up for the most prestigious award in her industry. Yeah, she’s morbidly obese. Should she have stayed home? Should she have hung her head in shame? What would you hateful people have had her do? Being obese is not a sin. Is it healthy? No, by no means. Does she think about it EVERY DAY? I’m about 99% sure she does. Do you know what the hell happened to her to get her there? NO. You don’t. You have no right to pass judgement on her. Want a good example? I was a super tall, super skinny kid who played soccer like it was my job for the first 10 years of my life. I ate like it was my job, but I was so active and my metabolism was so high that I may as well have had a hollow leg. It seemed like I was shaping up to be one of those kids, smart as a whip, tall, thin, active, all the “right” qualities by society’s standards. Until I took a swift kick in the back and ruptured 2 discs. I had to stop playing EVERY sport immediately and for about 3 years through surgeries and recovery. My super fast metabolism STOPPED. I gained a ton of weight overnight and I was eating MUCH less. I’m still working on correcting those problems, and even though I lost 60 pounds last year I’m sure you wouldn’t see that if you looked at me. You wouldn’t see that my blood pressure and cholesterol are absolutely PERFECT, you wouldn’t see that I ran a 5K last month, or am planning on running a half marathon in January. How dare you be so ignorant and small minded. Your lives must be incredibly sad and empty that you have to shit all over a beautiful, talented girl on the best day of her life. I feel sorry for people like you. You know, beauty is skin deep but ugly goes straight to the bone. I would be ashamed of myself if I thought like you do.

    • your story runs true for many people. keep up your hard work!

    • T

      Thank you mama!

    • T

And just b/c youre skinny doesnt mean your healthy aka kate moss, bleh. I mean Ive seen so many girls who were or are up on their fitness yet they let everything else go from a “yuck mouth with messed up teeth(which oral health is directly linked to overall health and heart health) to ugly or not so great faces. So if theyre going to be so worried about fitness and having a nice body make sure everything else is in order too. Gaby is so damn intelligent I love it!

    • Elysia

      Love this comment

    • Kathryn

“She is a happy young woman who was up for the most prestigious award in her industry. Yeah, she’s morbidly obese. Should she have stayed home? Should she have hung her head in shame? What would you hateful people have had her do? Being obese is not a sin.”

I don’t think anyone could have put it better.

  39. People are seriously cruel. I’m pretty sure ya’ll making rude comments don’t look so flattering in natural lighting yourselves or have the confidence to be anyone besides conformists.

Come to sites like Temptalia with positive attitudes to appreciate what Christine puts together for you. Don’t come on her site mucking up award show posts with your own anonymous insecurities just because your less-than-average and feel the need to bash others simply for the fact that you can get away with it.

Gabourey Sidibe loves who she is. And that kind of confidence to be the size she is and stand before millions of people is what’s truly beautiful. Your pathetic attitudes however, I wouldn’t go near with a 30 foot pole.

  40. Alicia

her dress is beautiful. she looks lovely.

  41. her face looks oily and she could use a bit of colour. But her dress is fabulous & very flattering for her shape.

  42. Marcie

I Think she looks good! love the dress. and im glad she showed her arms. So what if shes not a stick. She should be looked up to as someone who is confident in their own skin. She might not be the most healthy weight but no one is perfect. And this post wasnt made to be talking bad about peoples weight or anything its a makeup blog!!

  43. Melzo

I am horrified by some of the comments to her appearance. As people we all come in different shapes and sizes. Please lets start respecting people for there qualities and not there appearance. This is why our world is so ugly. People’s lack or respect towards another human being is just a disgrace. Dig your nose out where ever it is buried and learn respect and kindness towards other.

    I think she looks beautiful!!!

    • Z

Except, if she were anorexic instead of obese, you would all be commenting about it. Why is being too skinny okay to insult, but being obese is not? I can’t imagine any of you saying an anorexic-looking woman is beautiful, but both are equally unhealthy.

      • Kelly

I most definately couldn’t agree more!!!

      • daphne

NEITHER IS OKAY TO COMMENT ON PEOPLE. For real! Bodies are not public property! It’s one thing to talk about how someone chooses to dress or decorate herself, but someone’s body is related to his or her health, which is – in case people have forgotten things like HIPAA and doctor-patient confidentiality – a private matter. I am disgusted with the comments here, but I am equally horrified when I see people making negative comments about thin women. Come on – the female body is a beautiful spectrum. We don’t have a damn clue why an individual woman looks like she does. Let’s just enjoy the point of this blog – how we decorate and display our bodies. Not the bodies themselves.

        • Elizabeth

You’re “horrified”? That’s a little extreme. Gabourey has put herself in the public eye, and most of the “public” commenting here are describing her appearance as if they are blind. She discusses herself, her weight, in the open on t.v. to the public, and we her audience have the right to express our factual or delusional opinion. I frankly don’t think I’m being delusional if I say she looks extremely unhealthy and extremely obese. I don’t know if she has a medical condition for being so huge. If she does, then I take this back, but generally speaking fat isn’t manufactured from thin air. If she was poor before her popularity, my guess is that she couldn’t afford her diet. She would have been ahead spending that money on exercise equipment and a personal trainer! But seriously, how many poor people can afford to get that big? At any rate, a self abused female body is not beautiful, in my opinion. I think it is embarrassing in the universal arena to have someone so big become such a hit.

          • daphne

Look, please don’t talk about things you know nothing about. You’re pulling this out of thin air and speculating on experiences you clearly haven’t had. People living under the poverty line in this country are significantly more obese than those who are in the wealthiest brackets. Let’s talk about availability of healthy food, about the overabundance of cheap calories, about the contribution of chronic stress to obesity, about the lack of medical care available. Exercise equipment? Personal trainers? These things are utterly foreign to someone who’s grown up impoverished. There is NO ACCESS to these things. I understand that you’re probably very privileged and don’t realize this – it took putting myself out in the world and working with organizations to help the poor to realize it, because I grew up fortunate myself and am extremely privileged. But it’s clear to me you don’t have a clue what contributes to obesity among people living in poverty, which as I understand it, Sidibe was before she got discovered.

I’d love to see some links to Gabby talking about her weight. I’ve never actually seen her discuss it anywhere, possibly because interviewers are respectful enough to know it’s none of their damn business.

            • Elizabeth

I bought a good treadmill out of the classifieds for $25.00. I found a decent exercise bike by a dumpster. A person doesn’t need those things to exercise. Junk food costs more than good food. Rice, beans, bread, etc. are not expensive if you take to time to make them yourself. Look at the third world countries, they can’t afford “junk food.” And how much junk food would it cost to weigh 300 lbs. or whatever. Yeah it may take a little time in the kitchen, but at least your not sitting in front of the t.v. eating your supersized junk food meals. Your understanding is foreign to me and your understanding is of no value to the impoverished in this country. The reason for obesity in this country is laziness and junk food in all classes. You can grow a garden in pots, it’s still work that keeps you from the couch, it’s still food that will keep you from getting fat; if you prepare it without too much nastiness added. I still say Gabourey should be an embarrassment as someone to admire in this country. I wonder what the truly impoverished around the world must think. I’m a regular viewer of Al Jazeera, and I don’t see people this fat in any of the third world countries. Your adoration is ridiculous, you are culpable, in my opinion.

            • awesome. totally agree with you

            • T

Wonderful intelligent reply, thank you! I couldnt agree more.

  44. Christina

she’s absolutely radiant. so proud of Hollywood for casting her even though she’s not a cookie-cutter actress. I also really love the shade of her dress!

    • Alyson

It’s not like Hollywood went out on a limb with her though, I mean the book the movie is based on called for an “overweight teen”.

I am kind of happy they went with someone who everyone can all agree is overweight, rather than a girl who’s a size 10 and therefore just looks overweight *by comparison* to skinnier actresses!

  45. AnGeLwInGz

She’d look gorgeous if she covered up the stretch marks on her collar bone. Who knew you could get them there? Same with the arms.

  46. Mariana

I have struggled my entire life with somewhat of a weight problem and I think that people that judge us for the way we look is WRONG. It takes alot of confidence to rock a dress like this and she looks great. My only wish for thin people that judge overweight people is that they will one day “walk a mile” in “overweight shoes”.

  47. rochelle

wow, this discussion is absolutely appalling. i almost want to stop reading and commenting on this site if these are the kind of people that this site attracts.

  48. Temptalia is a community about positivity — insults, name calling, and belittling of readers is just not something we want to have in our community. Please feel free to express your opinion–just avoid insulting others in the process!

    Thank you for understanding.

  49. Lolo

I like the hair and dress (Gabourey looks great in jewel tones). I do wish they had put more color on her face–a rosy pink blush and pink gloss would’ve lifted the whole look nicely. I’m iffy about the eye shadow, which seems a bit too much for a young woman, though the lashes add an appropriate touch of glam.

And shame on all the meanies who decided this was an appropriate time to air your body snarking! Justifying your own rudeness by citing hypothetical criticisms of very thin women is no justification at all.

  50. Rosa

I didn’t know who she was until this award. Personally I cannot watch her, her obesity makes me uncomfortable. When I want entertainment, I want something that is pleasant. She is not pleasant to look at. She may have a great personality and attitude and that’s great. I don’t think it is wise to call her beautiful without honesty, that her beauty is inside and not outside. The same should be said of people that are too skinny; true beauty is on the inside and outside. We live in a nation that in general has a huge problem with obesity, let’s not glamorize it. With all due respect.

  51. Jessica

I think she looks beautiful, and I really like her eyeshadow.

  52. SR

She really should fire her stylist!!! Why would she be in a dress when she has so many stretch marks on her shoulder area? Something loose and flowy on her arms would have been more suitable.

Good for her, though! To get this role in 3 days is amazing.

  53. PasH

She is very pretty. Nice makeup and dress!
