Gabourey Sidibe @ 2010 Academy Awards
Love the shimmery lips!
Love it or hate it?
See the dress!

She really should fire her stylist!!! Why would she be in a dress when she has so many stretch marks on her shoulder area? Something loose and flowy on her arms would have been more suitable. Good for her, though! To get this role in 3 days is amazing.
I didn't know who she was until this award. Personally I cannot watch her, her obesity makes me uncomfortable. When I want entertainment, I want something that is pleasant. She is not pleasant to look at. She may have a great personality and attitude and that's great. I don't think it is wise to call her beautiful without honesty, that her beauty is inside and not outside. The same should be said of people that are too skinny; true beauty is on the inside and outside. We live in a nation that in general has a huge problem with obesity, let's not glamorize it. With all due respect.
I like the hair and dress (Gabourey looks great in jewel tones). I do wish they had put more color on her face--a rosy pink blush and pink gloss would've lifted the whole look nicely. I'm iffy about the eye shadow, which seems a bit too much for a young woman, though the lashes add an appropriate touch of glam. And shame on all the meanies who decided this was an appropriate time to air your body snarking! Justifying your own rudeness by citing hypothetical criticisms of very thin women is no justification at all.
Temptalia is a community about positivity -- insults, name calling, and belittling of readers is just not something we want to have in our community. Please feel free to express your opinion--just avoid insulting others in the process! Thank you for understanding.
wow, this discussion is absolutely appalling. i almost want to stop reading and commenting on this site if these are the kind of people that this site attracts.
I have struggled my entire life with somewhat of a weight problem and I think that people that judge us for the way we look is WRONG. It takes alot of confidence to rock a dress like this and she looks great. My only wish for thin people that judge overweight people is that they will one day "walk a mile" in "overweight shoes".
She'd look gorgeous if she covered up the stretch marks on her collar bone. Who knew you could get them there? Same with the arms.
she's absolutely radiant. so proud of Hollywood for casting her even though she's not a cookie-cutter actress. I also really love the shade of her dress!
It's not like Hollywood went out on a limb with her though, I mean the book the movie is based on called for an "overweight teen". I am kind of happy they went with someone who everyone can all agree is overweight, rather than a girl who's a size 10 and therefore just looks overweight *by comparison* to skinnier actresses!
I am horrified by some of the comments to her appearance. As people we all come in different shapes and sizes. Please lets start respecting people for there qualities and not there appearance. This is why our world is so ugly. People’s lack or respect towards another human being is just a disgrace. Dig your nose out where ever it is buried and learn respect and kindness towards other. I think she looks beautiful!!!
Except, if she were anorexic instead of obese, you would all be commenting about it. Why is being too skinny okay to insult, but being obese is not? I can't imagine any of you saying an anorexic-looking woman is beautiful, but both are equally unhealthy.
NEITHER IS OKAY TO COMMENT ON PEOPLE. For real! Bodies are not public property! It's one thing to talk about how someone chooses to dress or decorate herself, but someone's body is related to his or her health, which is - in case people have forgotten things like HIPAA and doctor-patient confidentiality - a private matter. I am disgusted with the comments here, but I am equally horrified when I see people making negative comments about thin women. Come on - the female body is a beautiful spectrum. We don't have a damn clue why an individual woman looks like she does. Let's just enjoy the point of this blog - how we decorate and display our bodies. Not the bodies themselves.
You're "horrified"? That's a little extreme. Gabourey has put herself in the public eye, and most of the "public" commenting here are describing her appearance as if they are blind. She discusses herself, her weight, in the open on t.v. to the public, and we her audience have the right to express our factual or delusional opinion. I frankly don't think I'm being delusional if I say she looks extremely unhealthy and extremely obese. I don't know if she has a medical condition for being so huge. If she does, then I take this back, but generally speaking fat isn't manufactured from thin air. If she was poor before her popularity, my guess is that she couldn't afford her diet. She would have been ahead spending that money on exercise equipment and a personal trainer! But seriously, how many poor people can afford to get that big? At any rate, a self abused female body is not beautiful, in my opinion. I think it is embarrassing in the universal arena to have someone so big become such a hit.
Look, please don't talk about things you know nothing about. You're pulling this out of thin air and speculating on experiences you clearly haven't had. People living under the poverty line in this country are significantly more obese than those who are in the wealthiest brackets. Let's talk about availability of healthy food, about the overabundance of cheap calories, about the contribution of chronic stress to obesity, about the lack of medical care available. Exercise equipment? Personal trainers? These things are utterly foreign to someone who's grown up impoverished. There is NO ACCESS to these things. I understand that you're probably very privileged and don't realize this - it took putting myself out in the world and working with organizations to help the poor to realize it, because I grew up fortunate myself and am extremely privileged. But it's clear to me you don't have a clue what contributes to obesity among people living in poverty, which as I understand it, Sidibe was before she got discovered. I'd love to see some links to Gabby talking about her weight. I've never actually seen her discuss it anywhere, possibly because interviewers are respectful enough to know it's none of their damn business.
I bought a good treadmill out of the classifieds for $25.00. I found a decent exercise bike by a dumpster. A person doesn't need those things to exercise. Junk food costs more than good food. Rice, beans, bread, etc. are not expensive if you take to time to make them yourself. Look at the third world countries, they can't afford "junk food." And how much junk food would it cost to weigh 300 lbs. or whatever. Yeah it may take a little time in the kitchen, but at least your not sitting in front of the t.v. eating your supersized junk food meals. Your understanding is foreign to me and your understanding is of no value to the impoverished in this country. The reason for obesity in this country is laziness and junk food in all classes. You can grow a garden in pots, it's still work that keeps you from the couch, it's still food that will keep you from getting fat; if you prepare it without too much nastiness added. I still say Gabourey should be an embarrassment as someone to admire in this country. I wonder what the truly impoverished around the world must think. I'm a regular viewer of Al Jazeera, and I don't see people this fat in any of the third world countries. Your adoration is ridiculous, you are culpable, in my opinion.
I Think she looks good! love the dress. and im glad she showed her arms. So what if shes not a stick. She should be looked up to as someone who is confident in their own skin. She might not be the most healthy weight but no one is perfect. And this post wasnt made to be talking bad about peoples weight or anything its a makeup blog!!
her face looks oily and she could use a bit of colour. But her dress is fabulous & very flattering for her shape.
People are seriously cruel. I'm pretty sure ya'll making rude comments don't look so flattering in natural lighting yourselves or have the confidence to be anyone besides conformists. Come to sites like Temptalia with positive attitudes to appreciate what Christine puts together for you. Don't come on her site mucking up award show posts with your own anonymous insecurities just because your less-than-average and feel the need to bash others simply for the fact that you can get away with it. Gabourey Sidibe loves who she is. And that kind of confidence to be the size she is and stand before millions of people is what's truly beautiful. Your pathetic attitudes however, I wouldn't go near with a 30 foot pole.
Wow it's sad to see some of these ignorant comments. I'm gonna go ahead and throw my two cents in the mix. She is a happy young woman who was up for the most prestigious award in her industry. Yeah, she's morbidly obese. Should she have stayed home? Should she have hung her head in shame? What would you hateful people have had her do? Being obese is not a sin. Is it healthy? No, by no means. Does she think about it EVERY DAY? I'm about 99% sure she does. Do you know what the hell happened to her to get her there? NO. You don't. You have no right to pass judgement on her. Want a good example? I was a super tall, super skinny kid who played soccer like it was my job for the first 10 years of my life. I ate like it was my job, but I was so active and my metabolism was so high that I may as well have had a hollow leg. It seemed like I was shaping up to be one of those kids, smart as a whip, tall, thin, active, all the "right" qualities by society's standards. Until I took a swift kick in the back and ruptured 2 discs. I had to stop playing EVERY sport immediately and for about 3 years through surgeries and recovery. My super fast metabolism STOPPED. I gained a ton of weight overnight and I was eating MUCH less. I'm still working on correcting those problems, and even though I lost 60 pounds last year I'm sure you wouldn't see that if you looked at me. You wouldn't see that my blood pressure and cholesterol are absolutely PERFECT, you wouldn't see that I ran a 5K last month, or am planning on running a half marathon in January. How dare you be so ignorant and small minded. Your lives must be incredibly sad and empty that you have to shit all over a beautiful, talented girl on the best day of her life. I feel sorry for people like you. You know, beauty is skin deep but ugly goes straight to the bone. I would be ashamed of myself if I thought like you do.
And just b/c youre skinny doesnt mean your healthy aka kate moss, bleh. I mean Ive seen so many girls who were or are up on their fitness yet they let everything else go from a "yuck mouth with messed up teeth(which oral health is directly linked to overall health and heart health) to ugly or not so great faces. So if theyre going to be so worried about fitness and having a nice body make sure everything else is in order too. Gaby is so damn intelligent I love it!
"She is a happy young woman who was up for the most prestigious award in her industry. Yeah, she’s morbidly obese. Should she have stayed home? Should she have hung her head in shame? What would you hateful people have had her do? Being obese is not a sin." I don't think anyone could have put it better.
i love those lips, i think maybe there was a bit of bobbi brown avtion going on there? the chrome collection for winter 2009 had a silvery lipstick that i think looks quite a lot like what shes got on :)
Are you kidding me? When she smiles, her whole face is radiant. She has a bubbly personality and attractiveness just shines from her when she's being interviewed.
i love the neutral makeup. she's wearing a bold color in her dress, i think the neutral makeup is a good balance. i love the flowy-ness of the dress, i just wish it didnt have the appliques on it.
Maybe, like everyone else, she has the right to wear what she wants and what she feels happy in. If you don't like it, look away. I didn't realise that we should all be taking everyone's personal preferences into account before we get dressed in the morning. I think she looks great.
The dress color is gorgeous for her! The dress itself, ehh, it's one of the better looks I have seen her in! Up close, her makeup looks greasy and oily, but from far away looks nice.
She looked GORGEOUS! I bet you ALL the plus sized companies were DYING to dress her for such an event!
Beautiful dress but the reality is that I hope all the money this girl is making right now will help her with her health problem. All this weight is unhealthy. There's no use in wearing a gorgeous dress if you look like you're going to have a heart attack any second. I feel bad for her.
I dont feel bad for her at all. She looks great. Alot of sticks on the runway like kirsten steward and miley cyrus is who I feel sorry for not a feminine shape in sight.
How are Miley Cyrus && Kristen Stewart sticks?? They look HEALTHY to me. Stick status would be the Olson Twins.
I wouldnt say they look healthy b/c kristen always looks like shes lacking color(or happiness for that matter. They are always hunching, looks like they may have osteoperosis later on too.
She is cute!! thankfully she didn't wear a boring black dress, i like the color and detail but more arm coverage would be great, just to make her arms look longer
sorry but this is really ... off. the makeup is horrendous; face is full of discoloration (=pls have some good facials beore the Oscars!!), oils are flowing around. Hairdo is something seen in the sixties perhaps, looks like it has done by the neighbor haidresser. They could have done MUCH better with her (the dress is OK).
the dress is lovely...both the color and the detailing on them... she was so confident!!! I mean other 'stars' of her age were very concious (kristen, MIley)...anna kendrik was cool too....
She looks like she's been sweating but I'm sure walking the red carpet was probably stressful for her. I don't know why her MUA chose a dark (probably black) color for her brows. Plus, her neck is darker than her face??? What's that about?
