Four At-Home Hair Tips & Tricks for Fall

Kattia and stylists from NYC’s Butterfly Studio Salon share their favorite tips for your hair this season…

“Brushing your hair 100 times a day will not make your hair grow faster, it simply stimulates the scalp but it will cause breakage. To help your hair grow faster, simply massage the scalp for five minutes at a time. This will also stimulate the blood flow and will NOT cause breakage” –Kattia Solano

“First, apply a volumizing product on damp hair. Then flip your hair over and dry it upside down, which is the key to creating volume at the roots. At first, it will look a bit out of control, but you can set the hair with Velcro rollers or smooth out with a curling iron. If you use a roller set, blow dry with heat for a few minutes and then finish with cool air. Remove rollers and brush or run your fingers through hair. If you use a curling iron, then you can set the curls in place by spraying 2 inch sections with hairspray and curling.” –Kattia Solano

“If you have hairspray buildup: first shampoo hair then create a paste with baking soda and water. Work the paste into hair, comb through and leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse and condition for optimum results.” — Nicole Descoteaux

“If you have oily buildup: add a 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, such as Palmolive or Dawn, to your shampoo.” — Dana Vuljevic

OK about the last tip: does that really work? Because I do have oily hair and I cant wash it that often because I straighten it. Which in turn, makes it worse!

    Isn’t dishwashing liquid harmful?

the idea of putting palmolive in my hair turns me off! if someone did that in front of me I will never go to that salon again.

i have been a cosmetologist for 21 yrs, and i’m sorry i do not agree with 2 suggestions. 1st adding any dish detergent to shampoo for oily hair may be a cheap idea but it is the worst thing to do it is very drying and damaging, your hair will feel extremely dry, and coated & will remove color. they do sell special shampoos for oily hair. which are not drying or coating.if anyone needs suggestion i will check back. also drying your hair upside down after applying vol product is the worst thing to do. your hair will look like the shape of a bell. flat at top and big, wide onbottom. try drying top roots in opposite direction of part if worn in one, or all roots 1st after applying product, which will set up volumn at roots were needed, then follow suggestion.

hi, sorry i’m responding back so late. its hard to say without looking at your hair. a few suggestion i can say is to use professional products from a salon they are gauranteed and can be exchanged. non professional products (shampoos)can leave a waxy coaing on hair&scalp. when washing hair make sure hair is saturated well with watwr and work shampoo in both hands(rubbing together) then hair and scalp. working it in well, then rinsing. when applying conditioner ring hair out, if long getting moisture out then apply cond from midshaf to ends. not at roots or scalp which can make hair and scalp oily or seem unclean. hygeine and health, and other issues can also cause your problem. if you have more ?’s i will check back. hope i helped :)

Dishwashing liquid? Hmm. I might try this one out. :P Everyone else seems to think that’s crazy but there is really a *lot* worse I could do to my hair. :/

      Hey Arianna,

These are expert opinions, from professional stylists, so I posted them thinking they were accurate–but here’s the best thing, this allows the readers who are also experts to chime in with their suggestions or expertise as well. I think it’s even better that they do, and they can dispel or explain why something works or doesn’t work. The more knowledge we all have, the better we’re off!

It also seems like only one of the four tips is in contention (the last one), so it certainly doesn’t make the other three not worth sharing!

The dish washing one has me raising my eyebrows…. My hair tends to build oil fairly quick, and my usual “trick” is once a week, putting a dash of apple cider vinegar in a bottle of water, washing my hair, rinsing it, and then rinsing it with the diluted vinegar thing, and running normal water through again afterwards. It seems like the dish washing liquid would be HARSH—heck, if i put too much vinegar in, or do it more than once a week, that seems to negate the positives of it for me….
