Default Anyone have PCOS?

I was wondering if anyone here had PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)? I suspect I have it due to several symptoms and was wondering if anyone here had it. What kind of tests did you take and how was it diagnosed?

The local family practitioners in my area do not seem to care about finding cysts last year (and even during my pregnancy!) or my weight (despite being on low calorie, lots of exercise diet); I also have sleep issues and some depression, which are other indicators. I just had my regular appointment and didn't bring it up because I felt dumb but now am wondering if I should have.

If anyone has experience with PCOS, I'd be interested to hear how you went about diagnosis and what your treatment experiences have been.

If it's too personal to talk about in a forum, I totally understand. Thanks for reading anyway!

Thanks so much.

I don't know anything about it, sorry, but you shouldn't feel dumb asking your doctor a question. It's their job! I know I feel silly sometimes at the doctor, but really the more you tell them and ask questions, the better. It helps them to fine-tune your diagnosis and treatment. Maybe you need to search around for a doctor who makes you feel more comfortable. Some people definitely have personalities that are intimidating. From your post it sounded like you went to a general physician, but if your insurance covers it, you'd probably get better results from a gynecologist for this condition. Good luck!

There is nothing to be embarassed about and from what I know PCOS is more common than you think and IMO I think you should go to another doctor maybe cuz you would feel more at ease and u can ask whatever u like too!!

Depression, gaining weight inspite of excercising and sleep issues could also be symptoms of hypothiroidism so it is better to consult another GP.

I wish u all the best sweetie and please keep us posted!

My younger sister has PCOS. She found out a couple years ago when she had elevated levels of testosterone, and was basically experiencing the first stages of male puberty- lowering and popping voice, increased upper body muscle mass, hair growth, etc. She has extremely long and painful periods and has had a surgery to remove her cysts in what's called a "Wiffle ball" laser procedure. She's on strong birth control to try to balance the estrogen in her body back out and try to keep from ovulating (in order to keep more evil cysts from growing), but so far it's obvious she's still getting more. If you'd like to speak to her about it, I can give her your email or something.
You should really get a referral to an endocrinologist. They can run the appropriate tests on you and find out if your symptoms are a result of an androgen problem caused by PCOS.

When it comes to health you should never hesitate asking about it and if there are any persisting problems you should be firm about it. If you feel there is something unusual with your body and doctor tells you it's nothing go ask for second opinion.

I know that PCOS is very common but can be dangerous too, reduce your ability to conceive and also cause pain...

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the helpful and supportive replies! I have been MIA lately as I got another job that is taking up a ton of my time.

Just was doing a cruise-through and saw this was revived the other day. I truly appreciate everyone's support and want to thank you for sharing your experiences and perspectives.

Thank you!
