I do keep track of my purchases. It's done on a spreadsheet along with an Access database. It list the brand name, color, finish, name of the color, sizes (for lotions and purfumes) and quantity. I even went so far as to make a tab for makeup I intend to buy. However, price is not, nor will ever be a column on that sheet. Mainly, because I don't care to know how much money I spend on makeup. I would probably be shocked (w/o the awe), slightly ahamed if I happen to think about the starving children in China and some what proud - more proud than anything else honestly.
I make sure when the money comes in I pay all my bills first. Then what ever I have left I put it in my savings and I have about $200 monthly for Makeup
I do have a folder with all of my makeup purchase receipts in it. However, I have not added up all the totals because I'm afraid I might pass out. I think creating a spreadsheet is an excellent idea.
I keep the bozes for any high-end beauty product I purchase. It sounds totally wierd, but it helps me be able to see exactly what I have without me going through my stash and looking. I have two seperate bags (Sephora and MAC), and I put corresponding boxes into those.
I have a catalogue with all the makeup I own, as well as for my clothes. For makeup, they are broken up into categories : Lips, Eyes, Face, Cheeks with all the prices noted beside the items. I think I will start writing down dates as well - thanks for the tip, you guys! :) You dont know how relieved I am to know that I'm not weird LOL!
I keep track of things like MAC - I like to know what I don't have! But when I buy cheap stuff I don't really keep track.
No, I'm not picky about keeping track of every makeup purchase. But I also don't own a massive collection or purchase a lot. I buy a few new products a month and that's all, I like to keep it simple. No spreadsheets for me baby!
I keep a spreadsheet of my MAC products: lipsticks, eye shadows, brushes, etc. I do this only with MAC so that means my OCD is not THAT bad! ;)
Nah, that'd take the fun out of it Haha. Seriously though, I know what I have, what I need, etc.. so its not really a problem
I don't...which is bad, I know. I'm doing Project 10 Pan now though (3 things done!), and after I'm done, I'll start to keep track Makeup - and money spent - seems to accumulate rather quickly......
Yes! I keep a spreadsheet of all of my makeup purchases..brand, name, color description and price paid. I do this mainly for the shock value to see how much I have actually spent on collecting makeup and to make sure I don't unintentionally repurchase the same eyeshadow color. I don't track the dates purchased, but that is probably a good idea for the perishable items. Love your website, tutorials and reviews Christine! Thanks.
Yes, I'm aware of how much I spend - but that doesn't stop me doing it though, LOL! A good chunk of my discretionary income goes on makeup but my credit card gets paid off fortnightly, bills gets paid first, a bit gets put aside for emergencies (like car repairs :-(...) and everything else goes on the mortgage. But I don't limit my spending as such (like $X dollars per week) and I enjoy a splurge every now and then but I also know when I need to be sensible and button it back a bit. Like when I've been buying Rouge G's for instance! Fortunately, I like buying beauty products for other people just as much so my mother and best friend frequently get luxury, high end items as gifts. MY BFF trusts me so much, she'll tell me what she wants (eg, a red sparkly lipstick, purple eyeshadow, etc) and I get to pick her out something, no limit on brand or budget, and she pays me back. She says I know what suits her better than she does...
I don't keep a budget or a spreadsheet but I have a general idea of what I spend. If my list is getting long I set a limit (i.e. "Don't spend more than $200 at MAC or Sephora" but now I'm starting an Excel sheet for all the things I'm buying or would like to get from Sephora for the rest of the year. It's a start. We'll see if I continue next year and with other stores besides Sephora.
I have a little book that I write down what I buy and how much I spend every time I buy something, I also use that to write down what looks I've done, etc. I started adding up my monthly spending in May, until them I was in denial, and it's pretty shocking, lol!
I have a list on my livejournal for all the shopping I do through the year. I have over 200 cosmetic article and I am a poor student. Should make me think about buying less *lol*
I probably have over 400 mineral eyeshadows I've collected over 4 years starting with my last year of college. >__> Yes I own a rainbow and about a 1/6 are from Fyrinnae. lol
I have a small case where I keep a calculator as well as all my receipts and a running tab of each purchase made per month. Sometimes I HATE sitting down and adding up the month's purchases. It's amazing how much money I spend sometimes. But it's better to keep track and keep receipts than to not.
I love using the diary function on MakeupAlley. It helps you keep track of beauty spending SO well. Highly recommend it.
I have to keep track of my beauty purchases because I constantly go into MAC and fall in love with shadows and lipglasses then I check my list and see that I already own it. It has happened to me so many times. The same thing happens to me with nail polishes.
Same here. I do have a MAC spreadsheet because I caught myself doing the same. Now I know what I have in terms of pigments, e/s, e/l, p/p, l/l, blushes, powders, etc. Mostly it was the e/s that was a problem keeping track of.
I used to do that with Stila and also my nail polishes. I would see a color I liked and check my list and realize I already owned it. But why did it look so much more appealing on a store shelf instead of on my makeup table :-)
Yes, I have spreadsheet for brand/name/price/date when I buy it. That also helps me to track how long I have kept the product (so I can trash it if needed).
That's a great idea! I am 'good' most of the time, but have recently discovered MAC releases, and it's hard to resist the things that I know are going to be only available for a short time!
GMTA. I do the same thing. I keep my cosmetic purchase receipts separately and at the end of the week update my spreadsheet which also has my weekly and monthly purchase totals. Not only does it help with determining expiration dates, but also keeps me on budget and keeps track of a particular receipt if I need to make a return/exchange.
OMG, I thought I was the only one that did that. As soon as I get home with a purchase, I immediately update my spreadsheet with the name, date of the purchase, the quanity and the amount of the purchase. It's good to know I'm not by myself...(lol)
This is kinda the same with me. Since I am mainly full time with my kids, whatever money I make doing makeup jobs or other things is all mine so I have to keep track carefully before I make a purchase. I never dip into "family" money for makeup. I would feel too guilty since it's not a necessity...to everyone else at least!
