Even though you’re probably a sunscreen wiz, since I know you’ve already read our Sunscreen 101 series, sometimes over exposure occurs, and you’re left with reddened skin. What to do?  Follow up with a cooling treatment with high aloe vera content.

Liz Earle Sun Shade Botanical Aftersun Gel ($23.50) is a very lightweight gel to help soothe skin that’s just seen too much sun and needs some cooling treatment. My boyfriend, who is much fairer than I, also burns easy compared to me (I don’t think I’ve ever had sunburn). I put this on his shoulders, and he was a happy camper. It has 92% hydrating organic aloe vera, which is a must-have in your beauty closet when it’s summer (if not year-round!). I sometimes use this on itchy or raw skin, and I find it gives me enough comfort and cooling to keep me from making it worse on myself.

If you’ve been reading Temptalia for a little while, you’ll know that we are strong advocates of preventing aging by using sunscreen everyday and everywhere. And not every sunscreen is made equal. Make sure you get introduced to sunscreen and learning about what ingredients and things to look for in your ideal sunscreen. You can also check out our Sunscreen 101 series.

Renee Rouleau’s Daily Protection SPF30 ($30.50) is a lightweight sunscreen that boasts 7.5% octinoxate and 7% micronized zinc oxide. The best part about this sunscreen is that it is designed to be your daily moisturizer as well as your daily sunscreen. If you’re like me, you are all about products that can multi-task so that you can save a few minutes in the morning. SPF30 is a good level of protection, and I’ve found that an overwhelming amount of daily moisturizers have no SPF or only SPF15, so it is great to see a product that has a higher level of protection.

I am a huge fan of Renee Rouleau products, so it’s no doubt that I enjoyed using this product. It’s a gentle moisturizer that helps me achieve the sun protection I need throughout the day. I would say in winter, I’d probably just use a moisturizer with SPF 15 and save this for spring and summer, since I’m not outdoors much when it gets cold! Renee Rouleau as a brand avoids using harsh ingredients, including mineral oil, sulfates, synthetic fragrancse and dyes. They concentrate on making quality products, rather than fancy packaging. Personally, their packaging is clean, sleek, and all I need in a product.

My only concern with this product is that you only get two ounces of the stuff for $30.50, which makes this a bit pricier than I’d like–of course, you don’t need too much, but when it comes to sunscreen, you don’t want to attempt to stretch the product in an effort to stretch your dollar.  You want a sunscreen you can use liberally enough that you don’t under-cover your face.

Skinceutical’s Active UV Defense Sunscreen Cream SPF 15 ($29.00) uses 3% Mexoryl SX as one of three active sunscreen ingredients, which is proven to have good protection against short UVA. It then has 2% Avobenzone, which protects against long-wave UVA. To protect you against the UVB spectrum, it contains 10% Octocrylene, which stabilizes the Avobenzone. (Yes, sunscreen is actually much more complicated than you thought!)  This sunscreen is meant for face, so you’ll want something else for your body (and with the size of the tube, you’ll probably realize it’s not meant for body), but I would recommend using it on your neck and decolletage area, too.

While it is only SPF 15, it is also water and sweat-resistant, comes in a fragrance-free formula, and it is lightweight. Ideally, you should apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before you head out into the sun, and you should re-apply every two hours or more often, depending on your skin type.
