Giorgio Armani #111 Rouge d’Armani Lipstick

Giorgio Armani #111 Rouge d'Armani Lipstick
Giorgio Armani #111 Rouge d’Armani Lipstick

A New Nude for Fall

Giorgio Armani #111 Rouge d’Armani Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a subtly warmed over light-medium beige with a soft frosted sheen. MAC Japanese Maple is a bit darker, less frosted. MAC Naturally Eccentric is a smidgen lighter. MAC Pretty Please is pinker. MAC Marquise d’ is marginally lighter but very close. Guerlain Gabrielle is a bit pinker but similar.

It seemed sheer when I swatched it, but on the lips, it’s mostly opaque–you can’t really make out my lip freckle at all! While Giorgio Armani says these are supposed to last up to eight hours, with this particular shade, I was able to make it to six with a fair amount of color still on (no need for a touch-up yet). I can see up to eight hours of wear with some of their other shades, but this lighter shade didn’t make it that far–still, longer than average wear as compared to most lipsticks. The formula is hydrating, feels comfortable on, and wears away evenly. It has a thin, creamy consistency that feels lightweight on and applies evenly and easily.

One feature I like about Giorgio Armani’s packaging is that it clicks close with a magnetic closure, which means you won’t have to fret that the cap will pop off in your bag. The lipstick is also scent- and taste-free.

Chanel Allegorie Glossimer Lipgloss

Chanel Allegorie Glossimer Lipgloss
Chanel Allegorie Glossimer Lipgloss

Chanel Allegorie Glossimer Lipgloss ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “sheer shimmering pink.” It’s new and limited edition from Chanel’s holiday collection, which will debut this October. It’s a pale, light-medium pink with subtle yellow undertones and a dusting of warm white shimmer. If you have more pigmented lips, this will lighten it, as there is some color in it, it’s just a light one at that–you can see how it softens and covers up my lip freckle somewhat. Because it’s pale and sheer, it’s more dupeable than not. Here are a few I came up with: NARS International Velvet is less warm-toned, Chanel Caprice is more opaque, MAC Fresh Air is pinker, and Bobbi Brown Pastel has pink shimmer.

What makes Glossimers popular are their non-sticky, thin consistency combined with high gloss finish and sparkling shimmer. They also tend to wear a little longer than the average gloss.  Allegorie wore for four hours, which is about average across all gloss, though a little better than average for such a sheer color.    The shimmer isn’t too dense, so it doesn’t look frosted or metallic on, but it does catch the light nicely and have a very Glossimer-like feel and look. I liked that it while it was sheer, it wasn’t completely colorless.   It was comfortable on, both hydrating and non-sticky.  It could have applied just slightly more evenly.

Bobbi Brown Uber Suede High Shimmer Lipgloss

Bobbi Brown Uber Suede High Shimmer Lipgloss
Bobbi Brown Uber Suede High Shimmer Lipgloss

Would You Rock Brown Lipgloss?

Bobbi Brown Uber Suede High Shimmer Lipgloss ($23.00 for 0.24 fl. oz.) is described as a “mid-tone golden beige.” It’s a medium-dark brown with yellow undertones and pink and gold shimmer. NARS More is the closest in color, but it doesn’t have any shimmer and looks a bit more like a lipstick when applied. Bobbi Brown Canary has similar gold sparkle but has no real base color. MAC Bright & Perky is sheerer.

Uber Suede is mostly opaque, and it applies evenly without settling into lip lines.  It’s a warmer brown, but it doesn’t look too orange or red.  The formula is hydrating, comfortable to wear, and the sparkle doesn’t travel.  This shade wore five hours on me, which is longer than average.  It has a mint scent with no discernible taste.  The texture isn’t too thick or too thin, and it is non-sticky.

Tom Ford Aphrodisiac Lip Color

Tom Ford Aphrodisiac Lipstick
Tom Ford Aphrodisiac Lip Color

Tom Ford Aphrodisiac Lip Color ($48.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a bright pop of blue-based medium-dark pink that has a subtle sheen in its finish. MAC Moxie is matte and slightly redder. NARS Carthage is bluer-based. Guerlain Champs-Elysees is redder. MAC Full Fuchsia is very similar, slightly more shimmer. Tom Ford Pure Pink is only a little lighter. NARS Funny Face is redder.

It’s a high-quality lipstick formula–opaque in one pass, long-wearing (six hours), hydrating, and doesn’t bleed or feather on me. It’s comfortable to wear and easy to apply, as it’s very nice on and wears well and fades evenly. It is lightly scented with a sweetened vanilla (very similar to MAC’s) but has no detectable taste. Is it gorgeous? Absolutely. Is it dupeable? Yes, definitely. Whether the formula is worth the luxury price tag is up to you, but if the color appeals to you and the price makes you cringe, there are several permanent dupes available (listed above).

Tarina Tarantino Floriculture Conditioning Lip Sheen

Tarina Tarantino Floriculture Conditioning Lip Sheen

Tarina Tarantino Floriculture Conditioning Lip Sheen

Tarina Tarantino Floriculture Conditioning Lip Sheen ($22.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “rich beet magenta.” It’s a rich raspberry red with subtle blue undertones and soft, glossy sheen. Revlon Raspberry Pie is a smidgen less red, not quite as bright. Guerlain Girly is redder. OCC Queen is brighter. Guerlain Champs-Elysees is rather close, just more opaque (so it looks a little darker).

This lipstick formula is supposed to be lightweight, hydrating, and have “medium pigmentation.” The color coverage is mostly opaque with a light translucency that allows for some of the natural lip color to come through. It has a light, balm-like consistency that slides on like butter, but it manages to stay on lips for a full five and a half hours. The formula is moderately hydrating (and more so than the last shade I tried in this range), so lips don’t feel parched post-application and you won’t feel compelled to run for your lip balm right away. It’s also scent- and taste-free. It comes in a gunmetal tube that clicks into place well and doesn’t show fingerprints for the most part.

OCC Heroine Lip Tars – Black Dahlia, Lydia, Marion, Psycho, Starling, Sybil

OCC Fall Lip Tars

OCC Heroine Collection: 6 New Lip Tars

OCC Fall 2012 Lip Tars ($16.00 for 0.33 oz.) sees the launch of six new shades: Black Dahlia (blackened red), Lydia (darkroom plum), Marion (deceitfully dirty rose), Psycho (dripping with blood red), Starling (deeply rusted red), and Sybil (midnight brownout). The six shades are inspired by the brand’s favorite horror movie heroines.

Black Dahlia is a blackened red with a touch of brown-burgundy. It has a very lip stain-like appearance on the lips. It doesn’t quite get opaque without over-applying the product. It’s fairly even, and at a distance, it definitely looks even. This shade wore eight hours and stained for another two. MAC Soulfully Rich is less red. MAC Prince Noir is less red, darker. Chanel Maniac is darker. Milani Black Cherry is lighter. MAC Media is browner, redder, and lighter.

Lydia is a medium-dark pink plum with even, opaque color coverage. I’d say this is the most “wearable” of the six and rather universally flattering. It lasted for seven hours on my lips. MAC Hot Gossip is lighter, pinker. MAC Plumful is pinker, sheerer. MAC Flaunting It is more purple, sheerer. Make Up For Ever is frosty.

Marion is a lightened peach-brown with opaque color coverage. It needed very little product for full, even color. This wore for seven hours. Burberry Heather Rose is darker. CoverGirl Delish is a touch pinker. Guerlain Gracieuse is similar but has shimmer.

Psycho is a bright orange-red–very fiery–with opaque color payoff. It applies evenly and smoothly It lasted for eight hours on my lips.. MAC Sail la Vie is similar. MAC Scarlet Ibis is redder. Giorgio Armani #405 is more orange and has shimmer. Dolce & Gabbana Sheer is glossier.

Starling is a rusted, reddened brown. It yielded full color coverage and went on evenly. This shade wore for seven hours. Cle de Peau Danse de Feu is lighter and has shimmer. Make Up For Ever #20 is a bit redder.

Sybil is a deep, dark chocolate brown with subtle reddish undertones. This shade lasted for eight hours.  It was extremely pigmented and applied opaquely and evenly. MAC Chestnut is not quite as dark/rich. MAC Seeds of Desire is redder. MAC Film Noir is lighter, warmer.

Beginning today, Sephora will be carrying the new six shades, but more noteworthy, is that Lip Tars sold through Sephora will be sold in an eco-friendly vinyl bag along with instructions and a mini precision lip brush–just to help newcomers to all that is Lip Tar learn the ropes a little more easily! Lip Tars are best applied with a brush and with very, very little product. As in a dot or two of product, not a dollop or glob. It’s not a gloss, and it’s way, way more pigmented than the majority of liquid lipsticks on the market. If you over-apply, the product may bleed/feather, and it will easily get onto teeth, too.

Lip Tars are extremely pigmented, long-wearing, and dry down to a satin-matte finish with just a slight sheen.  They’re not drying, and I don’t find that they bleed or feather on me, but very few products do, so take that with a grain of salt.  They are mint-scented and come in small, squeeze tubes but are meant to be applied with a lip brush. Black Dahlia was the only shade that wasn’t opaque, and overall, had a slightly different texture (and definitely a different look) than the majority of OCC’s Lip Tar range.
