Tom Ford Pink Lust Lip Lacquer

Tom Ford Pink Lust Lip Lacquer
Tom Ford Pink Lust Lip Lacquer

Tom Ford Pink Lust Lip Lacquer ($30.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “light pink with golden pearl.” It’s a warm, peachy-beige with pink, gold, and champagne micro-shimmer. Revlon Sunset Peach is more orange. MAC Pure Flattery is also more orange. Guerlain Sable Show is lighter. Bobbi Brown Pink Gold is similar but slightly pinker. Hourglass Imagine is more golden. MAC Nymphette is slightly pinker and more frosted. Cle de Peau #2 has a stronger golden sheen.

This feels and acts like a lipgloss-balm hybrid product but, on the upside, comes with the amount more typical of a balm (0.50 fl. oz., whereas a lot of glosses are around 0.20 fl. oz.), which makes this a “good deal,” as far as Tom Ford Beauty products go. It’s an easy-to-wear color that blends with the natural pink tones to the lip and adds a frosted shimmer and subtle sheen to reflect light. The coverage is semi-sheer to semi-opaque; there’s enough shimmer that it helps to disguise my lip freckle but not so much coverage that it will mask the natural lip color. (And if you have more pigmented lips, I would expect this to adapt and look more like your natural lip color slightly lightened with shimmer.) It’s lightweight, emollient, and wears two to three hours on me (I normally see an average of three to four hours for gloss). It was nicely hydrating, though, which was a nice benefit.

Chanel Eden (437) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer

Chanel Eden (437) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer

Chanel Eden (437) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “translucent raspberry.” It’s a shimmer-free pink-tinted gloss. On lips, it gave my lips a slightly pinker tint (and looked very much like Evolee once applied, but there’s a decrease in the warmth added). There is a number of sheer glosses that are similar to this.  I wish Chanel would consider releasing a better variety in intensity/opacity within a collection.

Again, sheer glosses are one person’s best friend and another’s nightmare. At least with Eden, Chanel made it clear what to expect: not just sheer but a translucent kind of color. The effect of this gloss is primarily adding a glossy, high-shine finish to lips, rather than adding sparkle or color. My lips looked pinker and less washed-out with this applied, but there’s no arguing about how subtle it is. It was rather difficult to assess how long this gloss lasted on me, but I noticed that at least half the glossiness had disappeared after two hours. There was some subtle sheen that I could still detect after three hours, but by four hours, my lips felt naked. The texture is slightly thin, non-sticky, and comfortable to wear. I wore this back-to-back, and it was lightly hydrating during that time.

Chanel Envolee (427) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer

Chanel Envolee (427) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer
Chanel Envolee (427) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer

Chanel Envolee (427) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “coral.” In the tube, it appears like a warm coral-red with shimmer, but swatched on the skin, it takes on a much softer, lighter color–more soft orange with gold shimmer than coral. On lips, it adds warmth and maybe tints them to something slightly darker, but it’s very minimal and the shimmer is hard to spot (it is not a very sparkly shade).  There is a number of sheer glosses that are similar to this.

Sheer gloss should have a more visible impact than a clear gloss would. On my lips, this shade makes my lips look glossy and adds more pinkness to them (you can see that my lips almost look a bit washed out when they have nothing on them). Because the effect is subtle, it makes this gloss more readily duped–there’s nothing particularly notable about this shade. It wears three hours on me, and the consistency isn’t too thick or too thin, doesn’t get tacky, and is comfortable and lightly hydrating while worn. But I recognize that many readers need some special oomph to merit splashing out this much on a gloss, and if that’s you, keep going and don’t look back on this one.

We will always see and hear the debate between clear, sheer, and opaque gloss and what is or isn’t worth it and what does and doesn’t make it worth it. If you prefer opaque gloss, Glossimers (generally) aren’t going to be your number one go-to. Sometimes they have semi-sheer to semi-opaque color, and more frequently (in the past couple of years), many of them are very sheer. The press release described Envolee as just “coral,” whereas Eden, another shade, is described more aptly as a “translucent raspberry”–so this should be more pigmented than Eden, but it is not.

Chanel Zephyr (377) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer

Chanel Zephyr (377) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer

Chanel Zephyr (377) Levres Scintillantes Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “beige with shimmer.” It’s a warm, orange-peach with peach and gold shimmer. MAC Summer Sweetneart is very similar in color but has no shimmer. MAC Pure Flattery is warmer. MAC Kiss Me Softly is similar. MAC Poetic License is warmer.

It’s one of the creamier-finished glosses within the range, so it doesn’t have as much sparkle as the sparkliest Glossimer and has a milkier finish on the lips. Because of the milky quality of the color, it does settle into lip lines somewhat. The high-gloss finished paired with the shimmer does help distract the eye from the settling so it is not as noticeable. I wish Zephyr applied more evenly, as it constantly would show “lines” if I pressed my lips together.  It lasted four hours, which was good and around average, and it was lightly hydrating while worn.  The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, felt comfortable when applied, and wasn’t sticky.

OCC Jealous Lip Tar Stained Gloss

OCC Jealous Lip Tar Stained Gloss
OCC Jealous Lip Tar Stained Gloss

OCC Jealous Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “popsicle pink/red.” It’s a bright pop of warm red with a glossy, jelly-like finish. MAC Strawberry Malt is pinker. MAC Strut Your Stuff is slightly more orange but similar in color. Illamasqua Fume is redder. MAC Russian Red is slightly darker. Illamasqua Temper is a touch more orange but similar in the way it looks.

Stained Gloss is a take on Lip Tar with a glossier finish, more translucent quality to the color, and a color that will stain and isn’t sheer but is reminiscent of stained glass windows. Yes, stained glass windows certainly come to mind! They have just a little translucency that gives them a lighter look, almost jelly-like, while still yielding the kind of pigment that made Lip Tars famous in the first place. Jealous had a thinner consistency that was lighter in weight and in appearance. I actually feel like the new formula may appeal to those who find the original Lip Tars too much, too pigmented, or felt like they took too much work.

The glossy finish lasts three to four hours, while the lip color lingers on for much longer (another four, for a total of eight hours of wear). It also stains, so there is still even color beyond eight hours, but it looks more like a stain and less rich/intense as it did when initially applied. It was neither drying nor hydrating while I wore it, and it started to feel more like a regular Lip Tar once the glossiness wore away (I’d say the later couple of hours of Lip Tar’s wear). I do wish they were hydrating, though, because as they wear so long, that added moisture would be a treat.

shu uemura OB Dream Orange Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine ($30.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a softened orange with warm, peach and tangerine shimmer and a glossy finish. Clarins Sunset Rouge is a bit darker, less opaque. Chanel Sari Dore is a bit brighter, redder in tone. Guerlain Orange Euphorique is also redder in tone. I think Chanel La Pausa comes the closest–if you applied gloss over it.

For as creamy and lightweight as this feels and as glossy as this looks, it was very pigmented. It covered most of my natural lip color with just a hint of translucency. The texture is slick and creamy, but it has a tendency to settle somewhat into lip lines. This formula is supposed to have “high color pay-off” with a “double moisture system for supreme moisture.” They nailed the color payoff, and it’s an incredibly rich and hydrating lipstick. It actually felt more like a thin gloss applied but with the color more expected of a lipstick. The only downside was the wear time was two and a half hours, which is shy of my average of four with lipstick, as this slips around more.
