NARS Liguria Sheer Lipstick
NARS Liguria Sheer Lipstick

NARS Liguria Sheer Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “nude caramel.” It’s a soft, pumpkin peach-orange with very fine yellowed peach shimmer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Covet (P, $18.00) is less shimmery. MAC Sensual Sparks (LE, $16.00) is much sheerer and appears more muted as a result. NARS Floralies (P, $25.00) is lighter. MAC Sheer Mandarin (LE, $17.00) is brighter, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The formula didn’t feel like NARS’ Sheer Lipstick formula at all; it’s heavier with a thicker, creamier consistency with more of a satin-to-matte finish with fairly opaque color coverage. It seemed to have more in common with NARS’ regular lipstick formula (but not Audacious) than the Sheer Lipstick formula. The thicker consistency paired with subtle frost in it seemed to make it very prone to catching on any imperfections and made my lips look drier than they were (as they weren’t dry at all). It wore well for four hours, but it separated and pulled into lip lines and faded unevenly (left a bit of a ring of color behind). It was neither drying nor hydrating in my experience.

Bite Beauty #001 Creme Deluxe Lipstick
Bite Beauty #001 Creme Deluxe Lipstick

Bite Beauty #001 Creme Deluxe Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.15 oz.) is described as a “deep burgundy with red undertone.” It’s a medium-dark red with warm, brown undertones and a luminous finish. Tom Ford Beauty Pavlos (LE, $32.00) is warmer. MAC Runner (LE, $16.00) is more matte, cooler-toned, darker. Tom Ford Beauty Velvet Cherry (08) (P, $50.00) is more matte, lighter. NARS Bette (P, $32.00) is a smidgen lighter. NARS Jeanne (P, $32.00) is lighter, warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Since brands have really embraced the whole “let’s release a way more expensive version and call it luxury” over the past year or so, I think it’s important that brands do it right–that’s the least they can do–and Bite gets it really wrong here. Bite Beauty’s Luminous Creme formula (which has the exact same packaging) retails for $24 for 0.15 oz., which makes this luxury formula 50% more expensive. Huge fan of the Luminous Creme formula and other lip products by Bite, but I really couldn’t feel anything different in this “better” formula, and worse, it under-performed, period. It had semi-opaque color coverage that goes on unevenly with visible streaks and patchiness, while the formula is unforgiving and pulls into lip lines. I had feathering, which is unusual for me, after two hours, and the color was mostly gone after four and a half hours. The consistency had a lot of slip (a little more than their regular formula), but it was also thin, which I think made it shorter-wearing. It didn’t stain, which was also a surprise, given the darkness of the color. It was only somewhat hydrating, but it didn’t seem as moisturizing as their standard formula. The extra kick in the pants was that it had a strong, waxy scent and lemony-soap taste.

You would think that to kick off a 12-month long limited edition release party, they would have come out with guns blazing and given us something to covet, but this was disappointing and you’re far better off looking to their Luminous Creme formula for a better-performing, longer-wearing, and more pigmented option. The packaging should have reflected the up-charge, and the formula should have been near perfection, especially since their Luminous Creme formula is excellent, so there’s no excuse for this under-performing release. Bite can do a lot better.

One last annoyance was that the bottom wasn’t labeled with any name or number, so you might want to mark it!

Maybelline Orchid Ecstasy (730) Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick
Maybelline Orchid Ecstasy (730) Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick

Maybelline Orchid Ecstasy (730) Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.14 oz.) is a fuchsia-magenta with cool, blue undertones and very fine iridescent shimmer with a luminous sheen. Tom Ford Beauty Pablo (LE, $32.00) is more opaque. Tom Ford Beauty Jack (LE, $32.00) is more matte, more muted. Tom Ford Beauty Justin (LE, $32.00) is more shimmery. NARS Michiyo (P, $32.00) is less glossy, less shimmery. MAC Boutique Pink (LE, $22.00) is lighter. MAC Lust Extract (LE, $17.00) is lighter. MAC Kelly Yum-Yum (LE, $16.00) is more matte. Sephora + Pantone Universe Radiant Rush (LE, $18.00) is brighter. MAC Bold Spring (P, $22.00) is lighter. NARS Full Frontal (LE, $26.00) is more muted. Urban Decay Anarchy (P, $22.00) is less magenta. MAC Midnight Mambo (LE, $22.00) is similar. Maybelline Electric Fuchsia (LE, $7.49) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

At last, the missing (and final) shade of the new spring colors! It had semi-sheer coverage, which could have applied more evenly–it looks a little splotchy to me, where some areas have a more magenta coloring and others are less blue-based, more fuchsia. The consistency has a lot of slip, so there’s no tugging while applyling, but it slidews around and will show “lines” if you press your lips together. On me, this shade wore well for three and a half hours with a slight stain left behind, but it was hydrating over time.

Kat Von D Bauhau5 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick
Kat Von D Bauhau5 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick

Kat Von D Bauhau5 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep raspberry.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark raspberry pink with cool undertones and an extremely matte finish. The finish is what makes it harder to dupe. Bite Beauty Framboise (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, warmer. MAC No Faux Pas (LE, $16.00) is brighter, less matte. MAC Flat Out Fabulous (P, $16.00) is slightly less matte, a bit more magenta. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It’s intensely pigmented, and a little goes a long way, so I’d highly recommend applying less than you think. With the liquid lipstick formula, you will want to work quickly so it doesn’t dry as you apply, but it doesn’t dry down too fast. I think you should have enough time to apply the color evenly with full color coverage, though. The color goes on evenly without pulling into lip lines, and when it dries, the finish is ultra-matte and makes lips appear almost smoother than they really are. The formula doesn’t feel clingy while worn, but it doesn’t have any slip, so it stays in place and there’s little to no transfer (if you eat something oily, it will break down slightly, but how much depends on what you’re eating!). On me, the color lasts well for eight hours, including through a meal. It feels slightly drying after four hours of wear.

Maybelline Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipsticks
Maybelline Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipsticks

Maybelline Hibiscus Pop (715) Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.14 oz.) is a cool-toned, cotton candy pink with blue undertones and a soft, pearly shimmer. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it had a higher amount of slip, which caused the color to apply unevenly with a tendency to streak. It pulled into lip lines after two hours of wear, and it lasted for a total of three. Maybelline Petal Pink (710) (P, $7.49) is lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Alexander (LE, $32.00) is more matte. MAC Ladies Who Lunch (LE, $22.00) is a smidgen lighter. Givenchy Rose Dahlia (210) (P, $36.00) is more muted. NARS Villa Lante (LE, $25.00) is moreo matte. YSL Fetish Pink (8) (P, $34.00) is a smidgen darker. NARS Roman Holiday (P, $26.00) is more muted. Maybelline Pink Pop (P, $7.49) is cooler-toned. MAC Divine Choice (P, $22.00) is darker, less luminous. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Power Peony (720) Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.14 oz.) is a brightened, light-medium pink with strong, cool, blue undertones that leans almost lavender. It had a soft shine with more opaque coverage, but there was still some translucency so the natural coloring of your lips may alter the way it looks on you. It lasted for four hours on me. Tom Ford Beauty Preston (LE, $32.00) is less blue-based. Illamasqua Luster (P, $26.00) is brighter. Maybelline Pink Pop (P, $7.49) is less luminous. MAC Naughty Saute (LE, $16.00) is glossier. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Narcissus (P, $18.00) is a smidgen darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Lilac Flush (725) Color Sensational Rebel Bloom Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.14 oz.) is a pink-tinted lavender with a luminous finish. It had semi-opaque coverage, but it was more slippery and didn’t apply evenly. I noticed slight gathering in the lip lines towards the end of the three-hour wear, but it wasn’t as noticeable as with Hibiscus Pop. Colour Pop Brills (P, $5.00) is darker, more matte. NYX Rose (P, $6.00) is lighter, more matte. MAC Dodgy Girl (LE, $16.00) is lighter, more matte. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Mannequin (P, $18.00) is lighter, more matte. MAC Raspberry Swirl (LE, $16.00) is pinker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Digitalis (P, $18.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Guerlain Rosy Silk Kiss Kiss Lipstick
Guerlain Rosy Silk Kiss Kiss Lipstick

Guerlain Rosy Silk Kiss Kiss Lipstick ($37.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “silky pink.” It’s a soft, light-medium pink with warm undertones, gold shimmer, and a luminous finish. Tom Ford Beauty Flynn (LE, $32.00) is less shimmery, less glossy. Tom Ford Beauty Ian (LE, $32.00) is less pink, less warm-toned. Tom Ford Beauty Addison (LE, $32.00) is less shimmery, darker, less glossy. Too Faced Shimmering Marshmallow Bunny (LE, $22.00) is lighter. MAC Dream Daze (LE, $22.00) is warmer, less shimmery. MAC Soft Savour (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, more matte. Estee Lauder Impulsive (P, $30.00) is less shimmery, warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It had semi-sheer color coverage; enough pigment to alter the lip color but still translucent so the natural lip color will come through. The consistency was emollient with a fair amount of slip, and though the color could be smoothed into place, you will see “lines” if you press your lips together, as the color moves around. It pulled into lip lines slightly, but it didn’t seem to worsen over time. This shade lasted for three hours on me but was nicely hydrating, at least. This is the type of color that is right up my alley, but it seems hard to execute.
