Urban Decay Revolution Lipsticks (Cool Pinks)

Urban Decay Jilted Lipstick
Urban Decay Jilted Lipstick

In this next look at Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.), we’re featuring several of the cooler-toned pinks available in the range. Please see part one for a more in-depth review of the formula overall.

Jilted Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “deep fuchsia shimmer with blue shift.” It’s a vibrant, brightened fuchsia-red with iridescent shimmer and a soft sheen. The consistency is thinner than other shades in the range, and it had mostly opaque color coverage, but there was a very, very subtle translucency that gave this shade a stain-like appearance. It lasted for six and a half hours well and left behind a stain for another two hours. Givenchy Fuchsia Irresistible is cooler-toned, less red. Guerlain Girly has less shimmer. NARS 413 BLKR is more matte. NARS Jardin des Plantes is lighter. Guerlain Gigi is lighter, less shimmery. Guerlain Champs-Elysees is pinker. OCC Queen is less shimmery. See comparison swatches.

Anarchy Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “bright fuchsia.” It’s a bold, vibrant fuchsia-magenta with cool, blue undertones and a glossy sheen. It’s incredibly pigmented with opaque color in a single stroke. The consistency is creamy enough that it glides on readily but doesn’t slide around or feather outside the natural lip line. It wore for six hours well and left a fuchsia stain for another hour or so. Maybelline Electric Fuchsia is similar. Maybelline Fuchsia Flash is slightly less blue-based. Maybelline Hot Plum is a touch darker. MAC Dear Diary is lighter. MAC Night Blooming is purpler. MAC Show Orchid is darker, shimmery. MAC Pink Pigeon is more matte. MAC Daddy’s Little Girl is more subdued. MAC Candy Yum Yum is brighter. OCC Nylon is brighter and lighter. See comparison swatches.

Obsessed Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “bright baby pink.” It’s a subtly, cool-toned cotton candy pink with a luminous sheen. It had good color payoff, and the consistency had slightly more slip than some of the other shades, so it can get streaky if too much is applied. It wore for four hours when I tested it. MAC Raspberry Swirl is lighter, cool-toned. Maybelline Pink Pop is brighter, bluer. MAC Divine Choice is similar. MAC Pink Nouveau is bluer-based. OCC Narcissus is purpler. OCC Femme is lighter, warmer. See comparison swatches.

Turn On Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “rosy pink.” It’s a vibrant, cool-toned, medium pink with a luminous sheen. It had rich, full color coverage, and it applied evenly and smoothly. Turn On wore well for five hours when I tested it. MAC Speak Louder is darker. Chanel Insolente is warmer. Bobbi Brown Wild Rose is more muted, darker. See comparison swatches.

Urban Decay Revolution Lipsticks (Reds & Oranges)

Urban Decay 69 Lipstick
Urban Decay 69 Lipstick

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is back with a new and improved formula (as well as packaging). Urban Decay’s bringing back lipstick, and they’re doing in in a major, major way with twenty-two shades from bold, bright, and wickedly vibrant to soft, subdued, and natural. The formula is creamy, lightweight, and glides on with nearly full color coverage in a single pass. They wear anywhere from four to seven hours, with some leaving behind a stain for another one to two hours. The lighter shades tended to wear around four hours, while deeper and bolder shades lasted an average of six hours. The creamy consistency is comfortable to wear but doesn’t bleed or feather, while the formula itself is moisturizing. I didn’t detect any scent or flavor! This post focuses on the red and orange shades within the range.

69 Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “bright red with pink undertone.” It’s a bold, brightened medium-dark red with subtle cool undertones and a creamy finish. It was richly pigmented and lasted for six and a half hours, and it did leave a stain behind. Edward Bess Eternal Passion is very slightly lighter. Chanel Dialogue is more muted. Giorgio Armani Red Fuchsia is similar. NYX Chic Red is more matte. MAC Everyday Diva is warmer. MAC Ronnie Red is darker, more matte. Guerlain Gwen is slightly darker. Guerlain L’Heure Bleue is more shimmery. See comparison swatches.

F-Bomb Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “classic red.” It’s a neutral-warm, medium red with a glossy shine. It looks warm on me, but it looks somewhat cool or neutral in the tube, so this may turn warmer/cooler depending on your undertones. It had rich, full color coverage and wore for six hours well. NARS Mysterious Red is matte. Maybelline Infra-red is warmer. MAC Red Racer is similar. MAC Must Be Red is more muted. MAC Cockney is warmer. See comparison swatches.

Catfight Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “pink-fuchsia with slight red undertone.” It’s a pinky-red–almost a warm fuchsia–but it is still slightly cool-toned that is finished with a creamy shine. It had intense, full color coverage, and it wore well for six and a half hours. It also left behind a stain for another hour or so. Givenchy Fuchsia Irresistible #205 is cooler-toned, more fuchsia. Revlon Sorbet is sheerer, lighter. Tom Ford Aphrodisiac is cooler-toned. Guerlain Girly is cooler-toned. NARS Jardin des Plantes is shimmery. MAC Moxie is more matte. MAC Impassioned is lighter. Guerlain Gigi is a touch lighter. Guerlain Gourmandise is similar. See comparison swatches.

Bang Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “bright orange-red.” It is rich in color and intensely pigmented with fully opaque color and a soft, luminous sheen. It wore well, lasting six and a half hours, and left behind a soft stain. Maybelline Orange Edge is slightly redder. Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin is also slightly redder. Maybelline Electric Orange is lighter. MAC Fashion Nomad is lighter. MAC Scarlet Ibis is more matte, a touch redder. MAC Sail La Vie is similar. MAC Morange and MAC Neon Orange are lighter. MAC Lady Danger is more matte. Buxom Rogue is similar. OCC Psycho is a touch browner and more matte. See comparison swatches.

Streak Lipstick ($22.00) is described as a “coral pink.” It’s a warm-toned, coral-pink with a glossy shine. It had rich, full color coverage, and the consistency seemed slightly slicker than other shades.  It has a tendency to create “lines” if you press your lips together, so it could look somewhat streaky (ha, ha) if you aren’t careful. This shade wore well for four hours. Chanel Saga is warmer, lighter. Chanel Liaison is similar, less shine. NYX Stella is pinker. MAC Elegant Accent is darker, brighter. MAC Flamingo is slightly lighter. MAC Betty Bright is a touch lighter. See comparison swatches.

Chanel Gourmandise (76) Rouge Coco Shine

Chanel Gourmandise (76) Rouge Coco Shine
Chanel Gourmandise (76) Rouge Coco Shine

Chanel Gourmandise (76) Rouge Coco Shine ($32.50 for 0.10 oz.) is a soft peach with a hint of pink. This is a limited edition shade with the typical Rouge Coco Shine formula: incredibly sheer color that gives off mostly shine, and this particular shade has some silver sparkle. MAC Shy Girl is warmer, more pigmented.
Chanel Peregrina is more pigmented. See comparison swatches.

The formula is supposed to be sheer, shiny, and hydrating. This might be better on someone with more pigmented lips as a way to lighten and soften the natural pigmentation, because on my lips, it looks a lot like my natural lip color and adds mostly shine (and some shimmer), though you can see in the swatch on my skin that there is actually color–that color just gets lost on my lip color even more than it might on another natural lip color. The shininess is apparent for an hour and a half, and then there’s a duller shine that lingers for another half hour before it all seems to have faded away. It has a very slick, balm-like consistency that glides on easily and feels almost wet. I wore this twice (in a row), and it was lightly moisturizing but not as hydrating as a lip balm.

It’s not a product for everyone; you have to love sheer products, the consistency of this (as it is very comfortable to wear), and so on. I totally get it when someone says, “What’s the point?” or “Might as well wear lip balm,” but that’s why there are a whole slew of products on the market – the ultra sheer to the intensely pigmented.

NARS Mysterious Red & Paimpol Velvet Matte Lip Pencils

NARS Mysterious Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil
NARS Mysterious Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

NARS Mysterious Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.086 oz.) is described as a “crimson red.” It’s a subtly warm-toned, medium-dark red with a matte finish. It’s bold, bright, and very opaque. The consistency is just waxy enough that it glides across the lips without tugging or pulling while still delivering full color in a single stroke.  It wore for six hours and was slightly drying overall. Maybelline Infra-red is glossier. NARS Majella is browner, darker. Hourglass Raven is brighter, warmer. See comparison swatches.

Paimpol Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.086 oz.) is described as a “pink chiffon.” It’s a slightly cool-toned, light pink with an iridescent shimmer, so it looks frosted on the lips. It had semi-opaque color payoff, but between the light color and frosted (but matte) finish, it wasn’t very flattering or forgiving on the lips. It seemed to apply easily enough and did so evenly, despite it not being opaque.  It wore for two hours and was slightly drying after wearing twice in a row! MAC Beauty is lighter, more opaque. MAC Fun Finds is warmer. MAC Mlle is more opaque. Guerlain Rose Innocent is glossier. See comparison swatches.

NARS La Paz & Peloponesse Pure Matte Lipsticks

NARS La Paz Pure Matte Lipstick
NARS La Paz Pure Matte Lipstick

NARS La Paz Pure Matte Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as an “orchid.” It’s a subdued, purpled berry with silver sparkle. It’s mostly opaque applied to the lips, and the consistency felt slightly drier than other Pure Matte lipsticks. I could feel a very slight grit from the sparkle when I was applying it, but I couldn’t feel it when I pressed my lips together. It lasted six hours well, but it was slightly drying after four hours of wear. NARS Never Say Never is lighter, less shimmery. MAC Yung Rapunxel is much darker. MAC Strong Woman is purpler. MAC Dish It Up is pinker, lighter. See comparison swatches.

Peloponnese Pure Matte Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “ginger pink.” It’s a muted, peachy-brown with gold sparkle and a frosted finish. Like La Paz, I could feel the sparkle in the tube when I applied it to my lips, but I couldn’t feel it if I pressed my lips together. It also had a slightly drier consistency compared to other shades in the range. This shade appeared more frosted on the lips than the other one did, but it also had opaque color coverage. It lasted five and a half hours well, and it slightly drying as well. shu uemura OB Dream Orange is less frosted, lighter. NARS Casablanca is darker, less frosted. MAC Freckletone is sheerer, less sparkly. Guerlain Gracieuse is pinker. See comparison swatches.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick (Berry Couture, Fuchsia Shock, Lover’s Coral)

Revlon Berry Couture Super Lustrous Lipstick
Revlon Berry Couture Super Lustrous Lipstick

Revlon Berry Couture Super Lustrous Lipstick ($7.99 for 0.13 oz.) is a cool-toned, fuchsia-berry with a soft shine. The color was buildable from sheer to semi-opaque–it looked a bit like a lip stain, because of how thin the formula is, as it looks a lot like my natural lip; not heavy-looking at all. This particular shade wore for three and a half hours on me, which is shy of average, but for something with as much slip as this does going on, it was good wear. Revlon Sorbet is warmer. MAC Lickable is slightly brighter. Dior Lucky is warmer. See comparison swatches.

Fuchsia Shock Super Lustrous Lipstick ($7.99 for 0.13 oz.) is a cool-toned fuchsia pink with iridescent fuchsia shimmer. It had sheer to semi-opaque color that was buildable and never felt heavy or thick on the lips. It lasted two and a half hours on me. MAC Midnight Mambo is brighter, cooler-toned. Revlon Lollipop is darker. Chanel Extatique is lighter. See comparison swatches.

Lover’s Coral Super Lustrous Lipstick ($7.99 for 0.13 oz.) is a softened, coral-red with warm undertones and a soft shine. This shade didn’t apply as evenly as the other two, but it had the same thin, your-lips-but-better finish that had a light sheen and sat well on the lips. It wore for two hours. NYX Haute Melon is more muted. Guerlain Nahema is more pigmented, shimmery. Chanel Coquette is lighter, more shimmery. Make Up For Ever Folk is similar. See comparison swatches.

It has a “Shine” finish, which delivers “lightweight color and moisturizing shine” with “buildable color payoff.” The formula is supposed to be moisturizing with a shiny finish. I didn’t detect any scent in any of the ones I bought at all, though I certainly stuck my nose close enough to get pink on the tip of it!  These three all felt moderately hydrating on me, but the hydration only lasts as long as they do, so it’s not as hydrating as a separate lip balm.
