NYX Blush & Castle Round Lipsticks

NYX Blush Round Lipstick
NYX Blush Round Lipstick

NYX Blush Round Lipstick ($3.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a medium pink with soft, warm yellow undertones and a light shine. It’s almost so warm-toned that it gets into a pink-coral range, but I think it leans just pink enough to still be a pink hue overall. It had mostly opaque color coverage with a creamy consistency that easily glided onto lips. It had a fair amount of slip, which was great for application, but it did seem like it wore off a bit faster as a result–though it was lightly hydrating while it lasted (three and a half hours). Givenchy Rose d’Exception (206) (LE, $36.00) is more muted, darker. MAC Hoop (DC, $15.00) is brighter. Urban Decay Naked (P, $22.00) is similar. Urban Decay Native (P, $22.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Rush (P, $22.00) is darker. Chanel Liaison (P, $34.00) is similar. MAC Flamingo (LE, $15.00) is warmer, a touch lighter. MAC Betty Bright (LE, $15.00) is brighter. See comparison swatches.

NYX Castle Round Lipstick ($3.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a cool-toned, lavender-shimmered, medium purple with a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, and the consistency was very creamy and emollient. It applied evenly for the most part, though it wasn’t perfectly even. This shade wore well for four hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. I couldn’t think of any previously reviewed shades quite like this. MAC RiRi Boy (LE, $15.00) is matte, no frost, so it appears darker and brighter. MAC Seasoned Plum (LE, $18.00) is darker, less frosted. MAC Nocturnal Instincts (LE, $16.00) is grayer. MAC Lavender Whip (LE, $15.00) is lighter, pinker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Digitalis (P, $18.00) is cooler-toned, lighter. See comparison swatches.

NYX’s Round Lipstick formula is a nice, budget-friendly formula that offers a bajillion colors (real number), so it’s always been a go-to recommendation from me when there’s a color someone wants to try but may not want to splash out a lot for.

Milani Bronze Beauty & Cherry Crave Color Statement Lipsticks

Milani Bronze Beauty Lipstick
Milani Bronze Beauty Lipstick

Milani Bronze Beauty Lipstick ($5.49 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “bronze shimmer.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark copper with lighter copper frost and a warm, reddish undertone. It had mostly opaque color coverage, wore well for five hours, and was just a smidgen drying overall. MAC Who’s That Chick (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Sheer Seduction (LE, $15.00) is lighter, less red. Maybelline Mochachino (P, $7.49) is less frosted. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Authentic (P, $18.00) is similar. See comparison swatches.

Cherry Crave Lipstick ($5.49 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “red pearl metallic.” It’s a bright red with subtle warm undertones and metallic red shimmer. This shade had full color coverage, and it wore for six and a half hours, plus a residual stain was left behind. It felt a little drying towards the end of the wear. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Role Play (P, $18.00) is a bit darker. Guerlain Pour Troubler (P, $35.00) is pinker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Super NSFW (P, $18.00) is similar but warmer-toned. See comparison swatches.

Chanel Ambigue (124) & Equivoque (126) Rouge Allure Lipsticks

Chanel Ambigue (124) Rouge Allure Lipstick
Chanel Ambigue (124) Rouge Allure Lipstick

Chanel Ambigue (124) Rouge Allure Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a soft, muted plum with subtly warm-toned, brown undertones. It has a soft, frosted finish that is somewhere between satin and frost. The color coverage was mostly opaque, though the color did not entirely cover my lip freckle. Ambigue lasted well for four hours, and it was neither hydrating nor drying on me (though it should have been hydrating). Urban Decay Strip (P, $22.00) is rosier. Revlon Pink Truffle (P, $7.49) is pinker. MAC Viva Glam VI (P, $15.00) is similar–more frosted. MAC One of a Kind (LE, $15.00) is similar. Giorgio Armani #526 (P, $32.00) is darker. Benefit I Think I Love You (P, $18.00) is darker and more frosted. See comparison swatches.

Equivoque (126) Rouge Allure Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, medium pink with soft, warm undertones and lightly frosted finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage; for a Rouge Allure, it seemed rather under-pigmented. It wore for three hours, and it was a little drying on me. Givenchy Rose d’Exception (206) (LE, $36.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Fiend (P, $22.00) is pinker. Urban Decay Rush (P, $22.00) is also pinker. Revlon Pink Truffle (P, $7.49) is darker. NARS Tolede (P, $26.00) is warmer. Make Up For Ever #4 (P, $19.00) is also warmer, darker. See comparison swatches.

With the newer shades of Rouge Allures, which are designed to have a more luminous (read: frosted) finish, I noticed they do not look as smooth on the lips as other Rouge Allure shades I’ve worn.  I don’t think the thinner consistency of the Rouge Allure formula works as well with the frost finish, because it doesn’t apply as smoothly.

Givenchy Violine Precieux (312) Le Rouge Sensuously Matte Lipstick

Givenchy Violine Precieux (312) Le Rouge Sensuously Matte Lipstick
Givenchy Violine Precieux (312) Le Rouge Sensuously Matte Lipstick

Givenchy Violine Precieux (312) Le Rouge Sensuously Matte Lipstick ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “berry rose.” It’s a cool-toned, slightly muted, berry with hints of rosy pink. It has a satin-matte finish. Revlon Plum Velour (P, $7.99) is cooler-toned, brighter. Bobbi Brown Berry (LE, $25.00) is brighter. Chanel Esprit (88) (LE, $34.00) is a bit redder. Guerlain Rose Bengale (P, $35.00) is more frosted.See comparison swatches.

It had rich, opaque color coverage and was nearly opaque in a single pass. The consistency is creamy, lightweight, and glides right on without pulling or tugging at the lips. The way it sits on the lips is particularly flattering; it looks very smooth and even, which ultimately makes my lips look about 15% nicer than they really are. It wore well for five and a half hours, and it was lightly hydrating during that time. The formula is rose-scented, and it seemed a bit stronger in this shade than some of the other shades (or the regular Le Rouge range). I really love the feel of the lipstick, though, and even as someone who doesn’t like floral-scented lip products, it’s a shade I’ve reached for twice on date night (which is a big deal!).

Maybelline Yummy Plummy & Mochachino ColorSensational Lip Colors

Maybelline Yummy Plummy ColorSensational Lip Color
Maybelline Yummy Plummy ColorSensational Lip Color

Maybelline Yummy Plummy ColorSensational Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a warm, pinky-plum with a satin finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and the consistency was lightly creamy–just enough to allow the color to glide across lips but not so creamy that it felt thick. It wore well for four and a half hours, and it was lightly hydrating while worn. theBalm Captain (LE) is more matte, pinker. Chanel Rendez-vous (87) (P, $34.00) is lighter. Guerlain Madame Reve (862) (LE, $49.50) is brighter. Urban Decay Rush (P, $22.00) is a touch lighter. Urban Decay Rapture (P, $22.00) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Casablanca (P, $48.00) is darker. MAC Plumful (P, $15.00) is very similar. See comparison swatches.

Also, I specifically went to Maybelline’s website to check the status on both of these shades before photographing (I’ve had them for a year or longer), and both were listed under the formula–except Yummy Plummy is not listed on any of the major retailers’ websites, so it might have been discontinued (though it’s still on Maybelline’s website). I’ve linked Amazon above, which is actually priced at $2.99 (free shipping for Prime members with any qualifying $25+ order).

Mochachino ColorSensational Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a warm, subdued coppery brown with warm, orange undertones. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and it applied evenly and smoothly. The consistency of the formula was creamy (and this shade felt a bit thicker compared to Yummy Plummy), and it was neither hydrating nor drying. It wore well for four hours, which is about average for me. Chanel Synopsis (P, $34.00) is less coppery. MAC Sheer Seduction (LE, $15.00) is somewhat sheerer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Authentic (P, $18.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.

NYX Addis Ababa Soft Matte Lip Cream

NYX Addis Ababa Soft Matte Lip Cream
NYX Addis Ababa Soft Matte Lip Cream

NYX Addis Ababa Soft Matte Lip Cream ($5.99 for 0.23 fl. oz.) is a vibrant, neon pink with cool, blue undertones and a satin-matte finish. Urban Decay Anarchy (P, $22.00) is darker, glossier. Maybelline Electric Fuchsia (LE, $7.49) is darker. Maybelline Fuchsia Flash (P, $7.49) is slightly darker. MAC Pink Pigeon (LE, $15.00) is darker. MAC Candy Yum Yum (P, $15.00) is brighter, bluer-based. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nylon (LE, $18.00) is brighter, bluer-based. See comparison swatches.

It’s richly pigmented with full color coverage in nearly one swipe. It applies evenly, and it dries down to a satin-matte finish in about thirty seconds. After two to three hours of wear, it is fully matte. The texture is thin, and it almost feels dry when applied, but it’s not drying while worn at all. It’s actually slightly hydrating overall. Addis Ababa wears really well and lasts a long time–a solid six and a half hours plus a stain that lingers for a few more hours. It’s not a particularly original color, but it is a fantastic version of it–and for under $10.
