Lancome Hot Number Lipgloss

The Summer Season: Lancome Hot Number Lipgloss

Lancome Hot Number Color Fever Gloss ($26.00 for 0.20 oz.) is a just-bitten kind of pink with silver shimmer. It is a weird color, because it doesn’t look like much swatched, but it really brightened my natural lip color and brought out natural redness I didn’t even know I had. It has a very glossy look while still being fairly sheer.  Color Fever Glosses are non-sticky while still being hydrating and lightweight on lips.  I like Lancome’s signature applicator–it’s like a sponge-tip wand, but yet not, and it really curves around lips well.

Is this the right pink for you? Would you wear it?

The Summer Season is a series of posts featuring bright, vibrant shades of coral, orange, and pink lipsticks and lipglosses — all perfect for a summer of fun — that runs through July 2010.

MAC Dazzle Lipstick
Dazzle Lipstick: Baby’s On Fire, Glaringly Hip, Hellraiser, Hot Sass, Infused with Glam

Preview: MAC Dazzle Lipstick & Dazzleglass from Digi-Pop

MAC Digi-Pops: Lip Server Collection is available for pre-order at your local Nordstrom. It doesn’t launch until July 15th, but pre-orders are in full swing. There are thirteen shades of new (and of course, limited edition!) Dazzle Lipsticks and seven shades (some new, some repromoted, but all limited edition) Dazzleglasses.

I didn’t test any of these my lips, so I really can’t comment on the wear or feel on the lips. (Sorry all, I couldn’t bring myself to use a tester — the germaphobe in me refused to participate!) The Dazzle Lipsticks did not feel gritty or rough when I swatched them–surprisingly smooth. They look like they varied from sheer to semi-sheer in color, but it’s difficult to know for sure just how sheer or opaque they may lean without swatching them on lips. (Which I fully intend to do, when I’m able to pick up my pre-order!)

Dazzle Lipstick ($14.00 U.S. / $16.50 CDN)

  • Baby’s On Fire is a sheer darkened ruby red with silver sparkle.
  • Glaringly Hip is a muted peach with brown undertones and pink and white glitter.
  • Hellraiser is a sheer, darkened mauve-plum with bluish-silver glitter.
  • Hot Sass is a semi-sheer, muted orange with reddish-copper glitter.
  • Infused with Glam is a warmed-up brown with red undertones and reddish glitter.
  • Liquid Lurex is a sheer yellow gray-gold with silver glitter.
  • Naughty You is a brightened medium pink with fuchsia glitter.
  • Smash Hit is a sheer beige-gold with darkened gold glitter.
  • Snazzy is a semi-sheer red plum with fuchsia-purple glitter.
  • Sweet Bits is a grayish lilac with multi-color glitter (predominantly light fuchsia). It’s kind of like Vex eyeshadow in lipstick form.
  • Troublemaker is a darkened red-pink with fuchsia glitter. It’s a darker, more opaque version of Naughty You.
  • Wham is a red-brown with gold and copper glitter.
  • Win-Win is a light baby pink with blue undertones and gold glitter.

Dazzleglass ($18.50 U.S. / $21.50 CDN)

  • Boys Go Crazy is a darkened plum-berry purple with iridescent purple and blue-violet glitter.
  • Fabulous Fun is a brightened fuchsia-pink with fuchsia-purple glitter.
  • Glamour OD is a brightened red with a touch of coral and pink glitter. This is a repromote.
  • Hi-Falutin’ is a softened peach-coral with gold glitter.
  • Spanking Rich is a softened pink mauve with fuchsia glitter. This is a repromote.
  • Utterly Posh is a darkened orange with a little brown and orange-gold glitter. This is a repromote.
  • You Got the Look is a brightened tangerine orange with almost teal glitter.

NARS Lipgloss Sephora Exclusives
NARS Lipgloss: Albatross, Angelika, Luster, Super Orgasm, Oasis

Preview: NARS Sephora Exclusive Lip Glosses

On July 29th, NARS will roll out five limited edition lip glosses at Sephora. Each will retail for $24 and is named after one of their best-selling blushes. The shades include: Albatross (luminous glow), Angelika (cotton candy pink with gold and silver sparkle), Oasis (sparkling pink champagne), Super Orgasm (peachy pink with gold glitter), and Luster (sheer golden apricot).

  • Albatross is a sheer white-gold with pale gold shimmer.
  • Angelika is a semi-sheer brightened blue-based pink with very subtle silver shimmer.
  • Luster is a sheer muted tangerine-peach with copper-gold shimmer.
  • Super Orgasm is a sheer played down pink with gold shimmer.
  • Oasis is a plummy mauve with gold shimmer.

NARS Lip Gloss has a thin, slightly tacky texture.  I found these a little stickier than the average NARS Lip Gloss.  Though I’ve only tried Albatross on my lips, they seemed on the sheerer side (which is standard for the brand’s glosses), so don’t expect a big pop of pigment.  They’re all easy-to-wear, everyday kind of shades.  Angelika is the brightest, but it sheers out quite a bit–it has a creamier, jelly-ish look in comparison to the other four, which definitely have more of a shimmer finish.

(I would happily do lip swatches for you, but these photos were taken at a NARS preview event that I attended in San Francisco yesterday, so all I got are swatches for now! Apologies!)

Too Faced Glamour Gloss

Too Faced Glamour Gloss in Champagne Room & Tickle Me

Too Faced Glamour Gloss ($19.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a plumping lip gloss available in twelve shades–from beige to marshmallow pink to iced raspberry. It’s a non-sticky lip gloss that’s moisturizing with a cooling sensation (it’s what “plumps”) (like when you use a mint mouthwash). It’s definitely not a sting or burning sensation, but it’s noticeable for at least a half hour. In general, I’m actually quite sensitive to a lot of lip plumpers–a few have really brutalized my lips, even after only an hour of wear. I didn’t have any issues with my lips drying out or peeling post-wear with Glamour Gloss (thankfully!).

  • Champagne Room is a sheer, light tangerine base with champagne shimmer. It’s surprisingly not at all what I’d have imagined with a name like “Champagne Room,” though.
  • Tickle Me is a sheer, pinky-coral base with golden shimmer.

The gloss is scented with a strong vanilla-frosting kind of scent–it’s a very sweet, sugary vanilla. It’s a little cloying for me, but I don’t notice the scent when it’s on my lips–just when I sniff the tube (wow, that sounds like I need help!). It’s moisturizing, and it wears for about three to four hours on me. One thing I noticed is that neither shade is particularly glossy. They’re definitely more on the subdued side for a gloss.

Ingredients: Polyisobutene, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Octyldodecanol, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax/Cera Carnauba/Cire de carnauba, Polyethylene, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Aroma/Flavor, Alaria Esculenta Extract, Faex/Yeast Extract/ Extrait de levure, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Lipids, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Lecithin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Menthoxypropanediol, Menthol, Silica, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Propylene Carbonate, Phenoxyethanol, Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Red 6 (CI 15850), Red 30 Lake (CI 73360).

I like the gloss–neither shade spoke to me, but the formula itself was nice–but I am really not digging the quantity they give you. Based on price per ounce, Glamour Gloss ($158/oz.) is more expensive than Chanel ($142/oz.), Guerlain ($145/oz.), and YSL ($145/oz.) lip gloss. It’s also significantly less of a value as compared to similar high-end brands like MAC ($82/oz.), Tarte ($105/oz.), and Benefit ($105/oz.). For the $19 price tag, they don’t give you as much as I’d expect.  If you’re someone who goes through a tube of lip gloss, it’s not the best gloss for your money, but if you rarely finish one, then you probably won’t notice the smaller quantity in these.

  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION:  If you’re looking for a gloss that lightly plumps lips without the bee-sting sensation, you may find the cooling sensation of Too Faced’s Glamour Gloss easier to tolerate.  I’ve only tested two shades, but of those two, both of them are on the sheerer side.  If you like your gloss less glossy, these are also a good option.  Their biggest downside is the value.

Illamasqua Move Intense Lipgloss
Illamasqua Move Intense Lipgloss

Ultra Wearable, Ultra Opaque Lipgloss!

Illamasqua Move Intense Lipgloss ($19.00)  is a bit of a reprieve from some of the brighter Illamasqua glosses, yeah?   Move is a muted, played-down pink-plum.  It totally makes me think “sugar plum fairy” as a description, actually.  It’s a truly opaque gloss that completely covers my natural lip color and really works on its own–it doesn’t take on the characteristics of my natural lip color at all.

Intense Lipglosses are amazing for the gloss addict who struggles with the multitude of sheer glosses on the market.  They’re so rich and pigmented, so they’re great worn alone for color, but you don’t have to worry about layering a gloss on top to achieve the glossy finish.  They’re scent-and taste-free, which makes them good for those with more sensitive senses, too!   Oh, and they’re non-sticky, too.  Not super thick but not featherweight either–it’s smooth, thin enough to move around, but not so thin it slips around.

The packaging is so-so — it’s a squeeze tube with a slanted tip for application.  I think a wand applicator may have been more appropriate, just because you could really get some precision with it, since this isn’t a product you can be loose with!  It’s slim, though, which makes it convenient to stash in purses or makeup bags.  Each tube contains plenty of product, and you really don’t need much to get full color-coverage, either, which is nice.

I’ve found that I get quite a bit of wear out of these, too.  The glossiness does fade after two hours or so, but the color itself works hard for four to six hours, sometimes longer.

More Intense Lipglosses…

Recommendation:   If you love rich, opaque glosses that aren’t sticky, wear well, and are scent- and taste-free… Illamasqua glosses are a must!

Illamasqua Temper Intense Lipgloss
Illamasqua Temper Intense Lipgloss

The Summer Season: Illamasqua Temper Intense Lipgloss

Illamasqua Temper Intense Lipgloss ($19.00) is a fiery orange red with a creamy, glossy finish.  It’s a wickedly bright–but neon–orange-red.  I can see this working really well with deeper skin tones and warmer complexions in particular.  I love the pigmentation of this lipgloss, because it makes no bones about what you’re wearing.  Intense Lipgloss isn’t for the fainthearted!  It’s long-wearing with the gloss wearing off after about an hour and a half, but the color itself clinging on for three to four hours and leaving behind a decent stain that wears on for another hour or two.  It’s scent- and taste-free, too, for those with more sensitive senses.

Is this the right orange lipgloss for you? Would you wear it?

The Summer Season is a series of posts featuring bright, vibrant shades of coral, orange, and pink lipsticks and lipglosses — all perfect for a summer of fun — that runs through July 2010.
