NARS Stripped, Unlaced, Playpen Velvet Lip Glides

NARS Velvet Lip Glide
NARS Velvet Lip Glide

NARS Stripped Velvet Lip Glide ($26.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a light-medium beige with a hint of pink paired with a cream finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, and while it didn’t appear streaky, the color settled into lip lines noticeably. This was one of the worst performers in the range as a result, even though it felt comfortable to wear over the three and a half hours it lasted. MAC Art of Seduction (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Insouciance (P, $32.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Liquid Passion (LE, $15.00) is warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Unlaced Velvet Lip Glide ($26.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a soft, light-medium pink with warm undertones and a cream finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that applied without streaking, but some of the color gathered into lip lines. The texture was smooth, lightweight, and non-sticky. The color lasted for three hours on me, but there was more color visible in my lip lines at that point as well. Maybelline Life's a Peach (P, $4.49) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Summer Sweetheart (LE, $15.00) is warmer (90% similar). NARS Odalisque (P, $26.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Dress the Part (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Tarte Hella (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Maybelline Pink-a-boo (P, $4.49) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Flair for Finery (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Embraceable Me (LE, $20.00) is lighter (85% similar). Chanel Rose Reve (189) (LE, $30.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Buxom Creamsicle (P, $19.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). NARS Turkish Delight (P, $26.00) is lighter (85% similar). Buxom White Russian (P, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Boy Bait (P, $20.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Maybelline Sandy Sensation (115) (LE) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Chanel Ideale (22) (LE, $34.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Playpen Velvet Lip Glide ($26.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium pink-coral with warm undertones and a cream finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that covered evenly and spread easily across the lips. The formula was hydrating, comfortable on the lips, and lasted for four hours on me. There was a slight amount of visible color in lip lines, but it wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. Maybelline Pearlescent Peach (520) (P, $8.99) is warmer (85% similar). Urban Decay Snitch (P, $26.00) is lighter, brighter, cooler (85% similar). NARS Nebulous (LE, $26.00) is warmer (85% similar). NARS Stella (P, $26.00) is brighter, warmer (85% similar). Anastasia Candy Coral (-, $16.00) is lighter, brighter, cooler (85% similar). Anastasia Maui (-, $16.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). Dior Rieuse (373) (P, $35.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Formula Overview

NARS Velvet Lip Glide ($26.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a hybrid between lipstick and lipgloss that is hydrating, richly pigmented, and comfortable to wear. They have stronger color payoff, a non-tacky consistency, and a smoothness to their consistency that is a lot like a good lipstick, while they have a plusher, thicker texture that gives lips a plumper, fuller look along with a glossy sheen that is more like a gloss. The wear varied between three and five hours for me, which is more like a gloss than a lipstick. They develop a more “velvety” finish, which is code for “less shine” after two to three hours, and at that point, they tend to look more like a natural finish lipstick than a gloss. Some of the lighter shades settled into lip lines, but it varied from shade to shade. Overall, the formula was lightly to moderately hydrating and comfortable to wear. I would classify the formula more as a pigmented gloss than a glossy lipstick, if I had to put it firmly in one box. The formula has a vanilla scent but had no discernible taste to me.

MAC Little Lovely, Clear Water, Water Deities Lipglasses

MAC Little Lovely Lipglass
MAC Little Lovely Lipglass

MAC Little Lovely Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a light yellow with warm undertones and iridescent pink and gold shimmer. It looked almost like it had a duochrome shift on the lips, but it was hard to tell (and even harder to capture!). This shade had semi-sheer coverage, and the color settled into lip lines a lot. The texture was comfortable to wear, though a bit thicker and tackier as you’d expect from the formula, but it was hydrating over the four hours it lasted. Dior Gold Rain (164) (LE, $29.50) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Pussywillow (LE, $15.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC On Cue (LE, $22.00) is warmer (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Clear Water Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a sheer golden base with iridescent sparkle and fine shimmer. It is actually described as sheer by the brand, so it is right on target in that respect. This shade has a lot of shimmer and shine, which makes it work well alone for a pop of sparkle, but it also works nicely layered over lipsticks. This shade lasted for four hours on its own. Colour Pop Supercute (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Like Venus (P, $20.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Clear Water (LE, $15.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Boundless Beige (P, $19.50) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Oh My Darling (LE, $15.00) is lighter (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Water Deities Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a medium, peachy copper with lots and lots of shimmer. It had more semi-opaque coverage due to just how much shimmer was in it; the gloss almost reads metallic applied as the shimmer is finer and very reflective. The texture was smooth, light-medium in weight, and comfortable to wear over four and a half hours. MAC Water Deities (LE, $15.00) is darker, less pigmented (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Pink Lust (LE, $30.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Flare for Fantasy (LE, $20.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Prancin' Dancin' (LE, $20.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Double Happiness (P, $20.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). NARS Bimini (P, $26.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Happiness (LE, $22.00) is lighter (85% similar). NARS Orgasm (P, $26.00) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA OVERVIEW | MAC Little MAC Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a miniature-sized version of MAC’s regular Lipglass, so the formula is exactly the same and even includes shades previously released as limited edition. The Lipglass formula is supposed to be pigmented, shiny, and hydrating. I find that pigmentation can range from very sheer to totally opaque from shade to shade–there is a ton of variance–with a light-medium to medium-weight texture that’s thicker, moderately to very tacky, and lasts four to six hours. I don’t mind Lipglass myself, despite the tackiness, but if you loathe sticky glosses, Lipglass is probably not going to be your number one favorite! They are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste. For comparison, full-sized MAC Lipglasses are $15.00 for 0.17 fl. oz. or $88.24/fl. oz. while the miniature-sized is $125.00/fl. oz. The smaller size makes the most sense for those who like more variety rather than more product or who do not typically finish a gloss.

MAC Itsy Bitsy, Dilly Dazzle, Love You Big Time Lipglasses

MAC Itsy Bitsy Lipglass
MAC Itsy Bitsy Lipglass

MAC Itsy Bitsy Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is an icy, pinky-lavender with cool undertones and multi-colored pearl along with larger, copper flecks of sparkle. It had semi-opaque color coverage with all of the shimmer in it; the base color seemed sheerer and tended to blend in with my natural lip color, but there was a ton of shimmer in this one that made the gloss appear more opaque applied. This shade wore well for four and a half hours and was lightly hydrating. MAC Khaaannnn! (LE, $15.00) is warmer (90% similar). Shiseido Nebula (VI207) (P, $25.00) is lighter (85% similar). MAC Perky (LE, $15.00) is lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Dilly Dazzle Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium-dark purple with warm undertones and a cream finish. It had medium coverage with a light-medium weight texture that was noticeably tacky and had a tendency to highlight lip lines. While a lot of the shades from the Little MAC collection weren’t streaky, this one was surprisingly difficult to even out on the lips. On me, the color wore for five hours. Cle de Peau Fast Lane (15) (P, $48.00) is lighter (95% similar). Make Up For Ever 501 Purple (P, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Snuggle Up (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Bittersweet (P, $26.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Narcissus (LE, $20.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Heroine (LE, $15.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Anastasia Orchid (-, $16.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). MAC How Chic is This (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Love You Big Time Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium-dark magenta purple with subtle, warm undertones and cooler, lavender and pink shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage that could have applied more evenly. The color didn’t pool into lip lines like some of the Lipglasses do, so that was an upside. If you don’t mind the lack of opacity, it is a more unique shade that wears longer (five hours) and is comfortable to wear. Cle de Peau Fast Lane (15) (P, $48.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Narcissus (LE, $20.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Heroine (LE, $15.00) is less shimmery, brighter (85% similar). MAC How Chic is This (LE, $20.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Carousel, Candy Yum Yum, Raring to Go Lipglasses

MAC Carousel Lipglass
MAC Carousel Lipglass

MAC Carousel Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a bright, cotton candy pink with cool, blue undertones and a cream finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that covered with very little streaking, but the color sunk into lip lines, which may be a deal-breaker for some. The texture was light-medium in weight, moderately tacky, but it didn’t feel too heavy. This shade lasted for five hours and was slightly hydrating for me. Anastasia Dusty Lilac (-, $16.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Carousel (LE, $15.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Pink Nouveau (LE, $15.00) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Patentpink (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Pure Silliness (LE, $15.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Obsessed (P, $26.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Illamasqua Indulge (P, $22.00) is warmer (85% similar). MAC Saint Germain (P, $15.00) is lighter, more muted (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Candy Yum Yum Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and a cream finish. This shade was so bright and glossy that while it settled a bit into lip lines, I could barely tell looking in a regular mirror as the shine camouflaged the settling. The texture was smoother and a little less thick compared to most Lipglasses. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that covered evenly. This shade wore well for five hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Style Packed (LE, $15.00) is cooler (95% similar). Anastasia Dollhouse (-, $16.00) is darker, cooler (95% similar). Urban Decay Crush (P, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Unlimited Style (LE, $15.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC A for Attitude (LE, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). NYX Sugar Cookie (P, $5.00) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). NYX Funnel Delight (P, $5.99) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Silly (LE, $15.00) is lighter (90% similar). NYX Addis Ababa (P, $5.99) is lighter, brighter, less glossy (85% similar). Estee Lauder Rosy Future (LE, $26.00) is warmer (85% similar). Revlon HD Tourmaline (510) (P, $8.99) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (85% similar). Bite Beauty Eleven (Watercolor) (LE) is warmer (85% similar). Make Up For Ever 207 Candy Pink (P, $19.00) is warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Raring to Go Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia pink with very subtle, cool undertones and fine, iridescent pink shimmer. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that covered evenly and didn’t settle into lines much (very slightly). The texture was also smoother and less tacky than older MAC Lipglasses, but it is still moderately tacky. The color wore well for five hours and was lightly hydrating. Maybelline Mystical Magenta (610) (P, $8.99) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Barbie Pink (-, $16.00) is darker, brighter (90% similar). Colour Pop Trinkets (LE) is darker, warmer (90% similar). MAC Red Blazer (LE, $15.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Maybelline Opalescent Orchid (515) (P, $8.99) is lighter (90% similar). Sephora Ultra Violet (18) (P, $12.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Boom Boom (210) (DC, $28.00) is brighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Whip It (304) (P, $28.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Throw a Spare (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, cooler (85% similar). Dior Hollywood (688) (P, $35.00) is lighter (85% similar). MAC Charm (LE, $20.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Urban Decay Big Bang (P, $26.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). NARS Danceteria (P, $26.00) is darker, brighter (85% similar). Sephora Pin-up Pink (17) (P, $12.00) is lighter, more muted (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Anastasia Vamp, Venom, Bordeaux Lip Glosses

Anastasia Vamp, Venom, Bordeaux Lip Glosses
Anastasia Vamp, Venom, Bordeaux Lip Glosses

Anastasia Vamp Lip Gloss ($16.00 for 0.16 fl. oz.) is a slightly muted, medium-dark reddish-burgundy with subtle, warm undertones and a cream finish. The coverage was semi-opaque, and a second layer might give you better coverage, but the consistency is most comfortable with just one layer in my experience. It felt lightweight, moderately hydrating, and sat well on the lips over the five hours it lasted. NARS No. 675 (LE, $26.00) is warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Bordeaux (-, $16.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (90% similar). NARS Deviant (P, $26.00) is darker (85% similar). Chanel Controversy (72) (P, $32.00) is warmer (85% similar). Giorgio Armani #200 Night Berry (P, $38.00) is warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Anastasia Venom Lip Gloss ($16.00 for 0.16 fl. oz.) is a deep, reddish-burgundy with fuchsia and violet pearl. It had semi-opaque color coverage that applied evenly, but I did have issues with some of the color gathering and darkening my lip lines. I don’t think it’s too noticeable from a normal viewing distance, and the lack of streaking did make it better than some alternatives I’ve tried. The color lasted for six hours and was really hydrating over time. MAC With Gusto (LE, $20.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Christian Louboutin Beaute Casanovella (P, $85.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Anastasia Potion (-, $16.00) is less shimmery, more muted, cooler (90% similar). MAC Lasting Achievement (P, $19.50) is less shimmery, more muted (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Anastasia Bordeaux Lip Gloss ($16.00 for 0.16 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark brick red with warm undertones and a cream finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, where a bit of the natural lip color peeked through. The texture was lightweight, mostly non-sticky, and comfortable to wear over the six hours the gloss lasted. The color applied evenly and smoothly with little effort. Giorgio Armani #200 Night Berry (P, $38.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). NARS No. 675 (LE, $26.00) is darker, more muted (95% similar). Anastasia Vamp (-, $16.00) is darker, more muted, cooler (90% similar). NARS Special Force (LE, $28.00) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). MAC Viva Glam I (LE, $15.00) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). Urban Decay Brickhouse (P, $26.00) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). NARS Deviant (P, $26.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). MAC Ready to Roam (LE, $15.00) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA OVERVIEW | Anastasia Lip Gloss ($16.00 for 0.16 fl. oz.) is supposed to be “opaque” with “high-shine” that’s “non-drying.” It is one of the more pigmented lipglosses out there that has a smoother, more cushion-y consistency that typically spreads well across the lips. Some shades gather in lip lines, and some shades apply streaky; it seems more common with lighter shades and milkier colors. The formula is non-sticky initially and develops slight tackiness over time. My experience from wearing the formula is that they are often lightly to moderately hydrating and wear three to five hours. They have a vanilla scent that isn’t too overpowering nor does it linger once applied (I notice it mostly in the tube).

MAC Fashion Punch, Lots of Laughs, Short & Snappy Lipglasses

MAC Fashion Punch Lipglass
MAC Fashion Punch Lipglass

MAC Fashion Punch Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a medium peachy-brown with warm undertones and gold pearl. The coverage was semi-opaque, but the creamier finish made this one noticeably settle into lip lines, though it went on evenly (which doesn’t always happen with this type of color or product!). I felt like the shininess of the gloss helped to disguise some of the settling from a normal viewing distance. This shade wore well for five hours and was lightly hydrating. MAC Spanking Haute (LE, $20.00) is cooler (95% similar). Surratt Beauty Au Naturelle (P, $32.00) is brighter (95% similar). MAC Overspiced (LE, $15.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). NARS Instant Crash (LE, $26.00) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Kinky (P, $26.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Satisfaction (214) (DC, $28.00) is darker (90% similar). Maybelline Charming Cocoa (125) (LE) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Undressed (-, $16.00) is lighter (85% similar). Chanel Sensuel (11) (P, $34.00) is warmer (85% similar). MAC Fashion Punch (LE, $15.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Lots of Laughs Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a medium pink with warm undertones and a creamy finish. It had good color coverage, though the natural lip color will still peek through, that went on evenly but had a tendency to settle into lip lines. This shade wore well for four and a half hours and was lightly hydrating. Worth noting, it was more pigmented and darker than its previous release. MAC Light English Red (LE, $30.00) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora Rose Petal (05) (P, $12.00) is warmer (95% similar). NARS Belize (P, $26.00) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Pink Pivoine (88) (LE, $27.00) is warmer (85% similar). Hourglass Canvas (P, $28.00) is brighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Hoop (LE, $15.00) is brighter (85% similar). NARS Bound (P, $26.00) is darker (80% similar). NYX Sorbet (P, $5.99) is brighter, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Short & Snappy Lipglass ($10.00 for 0.08 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark coral-red with fine gold pearl. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that went on fairly evenly and smoothly. The texture was light-medium in weight, moderately tacky, and comfortable to wear over the six hours it lasted. MAC Truly Everlasting (P, $24.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Dior Wonderland (575) (P, $35.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Anastasia Hibiscus (-, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Neon Carnival (-, $16.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Maybelline Rebellious Raspberry (110) (LE, $8.99) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Revlon HD Strawberry Topaz (535) (P, $8.99) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Fever Isle (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Dior Rose Tricheuse (669) (LE, $35.00) is warmer (85% similar).
