NYX Apple Strudel Butter Gloss
NYX Apple Strudel Butter Gloss

NYX Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as a “sheer to medium coverage” gloss that can be worn alone or over lipstick and “is never sticky.” The formula is also supposed to “provide nourishment.” They have a creamy, light-to-medium-weight consistency that glides on, feels comfortable, and is lightly tacky (they gradually get a little tackier as they wear on as well). The formula has a sweet, vanilla scent. As described, coverage varies from semi-sheer to semi-opaque. They wear two to three hours on me, on average, and they were slightly hydrating.

NYX Apple Strudel Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as a “peach.” It’s a light-medium, warm-toned peachy-pink with a cream finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, but it didn’t apply evenly and had a tendency to settle into lip lines–especially over time. It lasted for three hours on me. NARS Chihuahua (P, $26.00) is sheerer. NARS Tasmania (P, $26.00) is darker. NARS Belize (P, $26.00) is darker. Bobbi Brown Nectar (LE, $24.00) is warmer. MAC Talk Softly to Me (LE, $15.00) is slightly cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NYX Cherry Cheesecake Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as an “orange.” It’s a softened,, medium orange with warm undertones and a cream finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, and it settled slightly into lip lines, but because it was a deeper color, it didn’t seem as noticeable at a normal viewing distance (only really, really up-close). It wore well for three hours on me. NARS Wonder (P, $26.00) is darker. MAC Teen Dream (LE, $20.00) is a bit darker, less glossy. MAC Cheerful (P, $22.00) is a touch darker. Guerlain Tangerine Vlam (P, $30.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NYX Maple Blondie Butter Gloss ($5.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep peach.” It’s a muted, medium warm-toned pink with a cream finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff, and it wasn’t as prone to settling as Apple Strudel, but it didn’t apply flawlessly–just a little unevenness, a bit of settling. The color lasted for two and a half hours on me. NARS Tasmania (P, $26.00) is sheerer. NARS Belize (P, $26.00) is darker. MAC Go for Girlie (LE, $20.00) is darker, pinker. Urban Decay Flushed (P, $19.00) is darker, less glossy. Maybelline Caramel Infused (065) (P, $8.99) is darker. MAC Talk Softly to Me (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Please Me (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Hello (184) Glossimer
Chanel Hello (184) Glossimer

For summer, Chanel introduces four new shades of their Chanel Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.). All four have a “jelly” finish, and they’re very, very sheer and have a tendency to look the same applied to lips. Chanel described them as “translucent.” They’re as described, though shorter-wearing than the average Glossimer, but otherwise rather consistent. If you have more pigmented lips than mine, you may even find that they do not alter your natural lip color at all. The four feel the same: light-to-medium in weight, non-tacky, comfortable to wear, and are lightly hydrating. They last two hours on me (judging by the shine and feel of it on). If you’re a big fan of the Glossimer formula and are in the market for a mostly sheer-to-clear option, any of these will work. I’ve said it before, but a translucent gloss is one person’s dream, another person’s nightmare.

Chanel Hello (184) Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “jelly light rose.” It’s a clear gloss with a faint tint of rosy pink; applied, it just looks like my natural lip color with a glossy finish. Chanel Eden (437) (LE, $29.50) is very similar on. Bobbi Brown Cosmic Pink (P, $24.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Sexy (185) Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “jelly fuchsia.” It swatched completely clear, and applied, it looked clear as well. It certainly appear fuchsia-tinted in the tube, but I didn’t detect any visible tint outside of the tube. Any clear, shimmer-free gloss will be similar to this.

Chanel Happy (186) Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “jelly coral.” It was a warm-toned, light-medium pink-tinted gloss. It is very sheer applied, just amplifying the natural lip color and adding a glossy finish. Urban Decay Walk of Shame (P, $20.00) is warmer. Urban Decay Liar (P, $20.00) is warmer. Chanel Eden (437) (LE, $29.50) is sheerer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chanel Sunny (188) Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “jelly orange.” It’s a muted, peach-tinted clear gloss. It added warmth to my natural lip color when applied. NARS Chihuahua (P, $26.00) is more pigmented. Bobbi Brown Nectar (LE, $24.00) is more pigmented, warmer. Urban Decay Walk of Shame (P, $20.00) is a touch lighter. Urban Decay Streak (P, $20.00) is darker. Urban Decay Liar (P, $20.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NARS Lipgloss – Ophelia, Dolce Vita, Stella, Scandal, Misbehave, Quito, Rose Gitane, Sixties Fan
NARS Lipgloss – Ophelia, Dolce Vita, Stella, Scandal, Misbehave, Quito, Rose Gitane, Sixties Fan

Scandal is described as a “sheer crushed cherry.” It’s a warm-toned, orange-red with a glossy finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff, while the color applied evenly for the most part, it did settle into lip lines. The color lasted for four and a half hours. NARS Eternal Red (P, $26.00) is more orange. MAC Berry Bold (LE, $20.00) is very similar in color, less glossy. Shiseido Lust (RD305) (P, $25.00) is redder, brighter, more opaque. Maybelline Intoxicating Spice (070) (P, $8.99) is more muted. NARS Hollywoodlawn (LE, $26.00) is more opaque, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Misbehave is described as a “sheer cherry red with gold shimmer.” It’s a warm-toned, orange-red with red and gold shimmer. It’s pretty much Scandal with shimmer. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, which seemed to apply better than Scandal, as the settling into lip lines was subtler and less noticeable. This shade wore well for four and a half hours as well. NARS Eternal Red (P, $26.00) is more orange, less shimmery. MAC Berry Bold (LE, $20.00) is less glossy, less shimmery. Shiseido Lust (RD305) (P, $25.00) is more opaque, less shimmery. MAC Wake Up! (P, $22.00) is slightly less warm-toned. Maybelline Intoxicating Spice (070) (P, $8.99) is more muted, less shimmery. NARS Hollywoodlawn (LE, $26.00) is darker, more opaque. Chanel Daydream (P, $29.50) is darker, more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Quito is described as a “bright strawberry pink.” It’s a cool-toned, medium-dark pink with a creamy, glossy finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it applied unevenly, and there was some color that settled lightly into lip lines. It wore well for five hours, though. Chanel Tocade (182) (P, $29.50) is very similar. MAC Fashion Perk (P, $22.00) is more muted. Milani Ravish Raspberry (06) (P, $5.49) is cooler-toned. NARS Penny Arcade (LE, $26.00) is very similar. MAC Colour Saturation (LE, $20.00) is slightly cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Rose Gitane is described as a “sheer sangria.” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned red with orange undertones and very subtle shimmer. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage, which applied evenly with a little settling into lip lines, but it wasn’t too noticeable from a normal viewing distance. This shade lasted for four and a half hours on me. It’s just barely darker and less warm-toned compared to both Scandal and Misbehave, but they’re all quite similar in the base color. MAC Wake Up! (P, $22.00) is sheerer. Revlon Fatal Apple (P, $7.99) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Sixties Fan is described as a “pomegranate.” It’s a medium-dark, cool-toned berry with a glossy shine. It had semi-sheer color payoff, but it was prone to settling into lip lines and didn’t apply as evenly as one would like. The color wore well for just over four hours. It is very similar to Quito–it’s just a smidgen darker and more muted. Chanel Tocade (182) (P, $29.50) is a little lighter. MAC Fashion Perk (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, more muted. NARS Penny Arcade (LE, $26.00) is more opaque. MAC Colour Saturation (LE, $20.00) is brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NARS Lipgloss ($26.00 for 0.18 fl. oz.) has been reformulated, and the new formulation will launch on April 15th with 30 permanent shades–seven are new and permanent, 23 are shades that were available in the previous formula. NARS says the new formula is supposed to have “longer, more comfortable wear,” while being hydrating and smoothing with a “silky texture.” The texture is thin, somewhat tacky (the more shimmery shades seemed slightly tackier than the creamier ones), unscented (and no signs of a plastic, waxy, or crayon-like scent), with two to five hours of wear time, and is moderately hydrating. The formula is thinner and less sticky (5 or 6, compared to an 8 on the original formula, on a 10-point scale), and I found it more comfortable to wear overall. Note, the reformulated glosses are more expensive and contain less product.

NARS Lipgloss – Eternal Red, Sweet Revenge, Chihuahua, Ophelia, Dolce Vita, Stella, Scandal
NARS Lipgloss – Eternal Red, Sweet Revenge, Chihuahua, Ophelia, Dolce Vita, Stella, Scandal

Sweet Revenge is described as a “sheer pink grapefruit.” It’s a softened, medium pink with warm undertones and champagne shimmer. It had semi-opaque color coverage (you can see how well it hides my lip freckle) but still has some translucency that allows the natural lip color to come through. (Yet again, the description says “sheer,” but it’s not sheer and certainly much more pigmented than other glosses in the range!) It applied evenly, and the hue wore well for four and a half hours. NARS Super Orgasm (P, $26.00) is pinker, more shimmery. NARS Tasmania (P, $26.00) is lighter. NARS Belize (P, $26.00) is creamier–a little lighter. MAC Be Nice (P, $22.00) is warmer. Maybelline Caramel Infused (065) (P, $8.99) is less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Chihuahua is described as a “sheer guava.” It’s a medium, warm-toned, pinky-coral with a creamy finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage, applied evenly for the most part, and had only minor settling into lip lines (the kind not really noticeable from a normal viewing distance). The color lasted for three and a half hours. It is really just slightly darker and less shimmery compared to Sweet Revenge–the two are very similar on. NARS Super Orgasm (P, $26.00) is darker, pinker, more shimmery. NARS Tasmania (P, $26.00) is lighter. NARS Stolen Kisses (P, $26.00) is warmer. NARS Belize (P, $26.00) is a touch lighter. MAC Be Nice (P, $22.00) is warmer. Chanel Pink Pivoine (88) (LE, $27.00) is sheerer. Urban Decay Flushed (P, $19.00) is cooler-toned, darker. Maybelline Caramel Infused (065) (P, $8.99) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Ophelia is described as a “strawberry nectar.” It’s a medium-dark, peachy-coral with pink and gold shimmer. It had semi-sheer color payoff, which noticeably darkened and added warmth to the lips, plus a lot of visible shimmer. It wore well for three and a half hours on me. NARS Salamanca (P, $26.00) is redder, less shimmery. MAC Flare for Fantasy (LE, $20.00) is lighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty Heart Shaped (308) (P, $28.00) is pinker. Guerlain Frizzy Mango (LE, $32.00) is darker. Bobbi Brown Citrus (P, $24.00) is more sparkly. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Dolce Vita is described as a “sheer dusty rose.” It’s a medium-dark, rosy pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage–one of the more pigmented shades in the range–and applied evenly (seriously, why are the more opaque shades described as “sheer?”). It wore well for five hours on me. Of all the glosses, Dolce Vita seemed to be the one that was most changed that I could discern (I have nine of the original shades, not all)–the actual undertone of it shifted from warm to neutral-to-cool-toned. It’s still a very pretty shade, but I don’t appreciate the significant color change–the difference is most noticeable when applied. Paul and Joe Beaute Carnaval (06) (P, $29.00) is lighter, warmer. Maybelline Captivating Carnation (080) (P, $8.99) is lighter. Maybelline Mauve Mystique (025) (P, $8.99) is lighter, more muted. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Stella is described as a “muted raspberry.” It’s a medium-dark, warm-toned pink with pink and red shimmer. It had almost semi-opaque color payoff with noticeable translucency that let the natural lip color come through. It applied evenly, smoothly, and wore well for four and a half hours. MAC Galaxy Rose (LE, $20.00) is brighter. MAC Astral (LE, $20.00) is darker.

NARS Lipgloss – Easy Lover, Turkish Delight, Tasmania, Super Orgasm, Salamanca, Orgasm, Wonder
NARS Lipgloss – Easy Lover, Turkish Delight, Tasmania, Super Orgasm, Salamanca, Orgasm, Wonder

Super Orgasm is described as a “peachy pink with gold glitter.” It’s a medium, warm-toned pink with gold glitter. It had semi-opaque color coverage, noticeably adding color and glitter to lips but the natural lip color still came through. It wore well for four hours. I noticed the texture of the glitter throughout the wear. NARS Belize (P, $26.00) is lighter, less shimmery. Urban Decay Flushed (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, less glossy. Milani Sweet Grapefruit (09) (P, $5.49) is less shimmery, darker. Paul and Joe Beaute Carnaval (06) (P, $29.00) is less shimmery. Maybelline Captivating Carnation (080) (P, $8.99) is slightly cooler-toned, less shimmery. MAC Meteoric (LE, $20.00) is darker, warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Salamanca is described as a “pink flamingo.” It’s a muted, coral-red with warm undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage, and it applied evenly for the most part and didn’t settle noticeably into lip lines. The color wore well for four hours on me. MAC Wake Up! (P, $22.00) is shimmery. Chanel Sonate (178) (P, $29.50) is cooler-toned. Revlon Fatal Apple (P, $7.99) is more opaque. Revlon Papaya (P, $7.49) is lighter, more shimmery. Guerlain Candy Stripe (P, $30.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Orgasm is described as a “peachy pink with shimmer.” It’s a light, peahcy-pink with a lot of gold and coppery-gold shimmer. It’s a lot lighter compared to Super Orgasm, which is a darker pink overall. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage, which lasted for four hours. MAC Flare for Fantasy (LE, $20.00) is similar. Marc Jacobs Beauty Heart Shaped (308) (P, $28.00) is slightly pinker. MAC Dynasty at Dusk (LE, $20.00) is similar. Guerlain Frizzy Mango (LE, $32.00) is warmer, darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Wonder is described as a “sheer mandarin orange with pink and gold shimmer.” It’s a medium, warm-toned orange with barely-there pink and gold shimmer. It’s semi-opaque–not at all sheer–but settles slightly into lip lines. The color wore well for five hours, which is longer than many other shades in the range. MAC Riviera Life (LE, $15.00) is darker, more shimmery. MAC Morange (LE, $15.00) is more opaque. MAC Eclectic Edge (LE, $15.00) is more shimmery. Guerlain Tangerine Vlam (P, $30.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Eternal Red is described as a “bright orange-red.” It’s a medium-dark, orange-red with warm undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, and it applied so-so–it was mostly even but there was some color that settled into the lip lines. This shade lasted for five hours on me. MAC Berry Bold (LE, $20.00) is similar, less glossy. Shiseido Lust (RD305) (P, $25.00) is more opaque. Maybelline Signature Scarlet (020) (P, $8.99) is redder, more opaque. Revlon Fire (P, $7.49) is brighter, more opaque, more shimmery. Chanel Exces (P, $32.00) is redder.

MAC Lipglass -- Bright Side, Lots of Laughs, Live It Up, Carousel, Pure Silliness
MAC Lipglass — Bright Side, Lots of Laughs, Live It Up, Carousel, Pure Silliness

The MAC Playland Collection includes five new and limited edition shades of MAC LipglassApril 10th April 15th (MAC corporate confirmed as of 4/10 8:26AM PST) and in-stores and at counter on April 17th.

Bright Side is described as a “creamy yellow.” It’s a medium, warm-toned yellow with white pearl. It’s semi-sheer, so when applied to my lips, my natural lip color makes it so it ends up looking like a yellow-peach. It didn’t apply evenly, though, and it tended to settle into lip lines. It wore well for three hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. I wasn’t able to think of any dupes for this one!

Carousel is described as a “creamy pink.” It’s a light-medium, cool-toned pink with a creamy, milky finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but I really wished it had applied evenly! The thickness of Lipglass seems to make these creamy, milky shades a total pain in the behind to apply. It lasted for four hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Patentpink (LE, $20.00) is less glossy. MAC Long Love Love (P, $19.50) is cooler-toned. MAC Saint Germain (LE, $15.00) is purpler. MAC Going Casual (LE, $20.00) is sheerer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Live It Up is described as a “creamy orange.” It’s a light-medium, milky orange with a creamy, glossy finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, and this shade actually applied fairly evenly, though it wasn’t perfect. It wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. Maybelline Glistening Amber (055) (P, $8.99) is more shimmery, sheerer, lighter. Chanel Envolee (427) (LE, $29.50) is lighter, sheerer. MAC Imperial Light (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, less pigmented. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Lots of Laughs is described as a “creamy peach.” It’s a light-medium, neutral-to-cool-toned pink with a creamy finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, and it applied so-so–a little unevenly, some settling into lip lines. It lasted for four hours on me, though, and it was neither drying nor hydrating. Urban Decay Lovechild (P, $20.00) is sheerer, darker.Revlon Bejeweled (P, $7.49) is sheerer. Maybelline Petal Plush (100) (P, $8.99) is more shimmery, lighter. MAC Picture Pink (LE, $15.00) is slightly lighter, cooler-toned. Urban Decay Obsessed (P, $19.00) is sheerer. MAC Infinitely Likeable (P, $19.50) is cooler-toned. MAC Stay Sweet (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Angel (LE, $15.00) is darker. MAC Pagoda (LE, $20.00) is slightly lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Pure Silliness is described as a “creamy lilac.” It’s a cool-toned, light-medium pink-purple with a creamy, glossy finish. It applied terribly unevenly, though it had semi-opaque color coverage. The color wore well for four hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Patentpink (LE, $20.00) is lighter. NARS Coeur Sucre (P, $26.00) is more shimmery. MAC Saint Germain (LE, $15.00) is a touch lighter.MAC Pink Nouveau (LE, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
