Estee Lauder Citron Kiss Pure Color Lipgloss ($22.50 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a gold shimmered gloss that has virtually no color, just soft, pale yellow gold shimmer and a glossy shine. MAC Moth to Flame looks similar on, though it’s less golden and more beige. Bobbi Brown Coral Sand is more orange. MAC Gold Dust is less yellow. Really, any sheer gold-shimmered gloss will do. I’m surprised I couldn’t think of something dead-on similar. A gloss like this isn’t useless, it’s just not the type of gloss that most want ten of, because you can’t really see the nuances within it since there is not much to the base color.
If you like a little shimmer or you want something to layer over a lipstick without changing the color much, you might like this. I think it ends up being too simple to be a must-have for most. Citron Kiss wore of quickly, unfortunately–it was mostly gone after two hours. The texture is lightweight, feels almost gel-like once applied, and there is only a very slight tackiness to it (but I hesitate to call it that–it’s that subtle). Estee Lauder scents their glosses with their signature fig, which is best described as a sweet, fruity aroma. It didn’t dry out my lips during the brief stint it was on my lips.
If you like a little shimmer or you want something to layer over a lipstick without changing the color much, you might like this. I think it ends up being too simple to be a must-have for most.

Bobbi Brown Citrus Sheer Color Lipgloss ($23.00 for 0.24 fl. oz.) is described as a “sheer neon orange.” It’s a sheer tangerine orange that gives lips a darker, warmer look. It adds subtle color without looking opaque, but it definitely does something. Le Metier de Beaute Orange Juiced looks very, very similar–it just has shimmer.
I like the lightweight feel of Bobbi Brown’s Sheer Color Lipgloss, and it has a mint scent (but no taste) like the rest of her gloss line. The color is certainly sheer, but there is a high gloss shine. It has a slightly sticky texture that develops over time (because initially, it feels non-sticky). Citrus managed to hang on for about two hours but had disappeared entirely after two and a half hours. Not drying, not moisturizing; it’s just kind of a so-so lipgloss.
By the by, am I the only one who likes the color in the tube to look like what it does on the lips? If I want a sheer lipgloss, I want it to look sheer and lightly tinted in the tube! If it’s going to be rich and opaque on, then I want it to look that way in the tube. Bobbi Brown is just one of many brands who’ve come out with products that look bold and opaque in the tube but are formulated specifically to be sheer.
It's sheer, just like it's supposed to be, but it does tint the lips just slightly and finishes them off with a high shine. If you've ever felt like you couldn't wear orange... I'm pretty sure you could get away with this one!

NARS Coeur Sucre Larger Than Life Lipgloss ($26.00 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “shimmering vibrant pink.” It’s a medium cotton candy pink with blue undertones and a silver-white micro-glitter/shimmer. I couldn’t think of too many shades that came close to this. MAC Vanity Fair is much lighter and has no shimmer (more like a liquid lipstick formula). NARS Angelika would be much closer, except it’s not as opaque and applies fairly streaky. MAC Sassy Lassy is darker and brighter.
The Larger Than Life formula is designed to give “intense color” with “brilliant shine” while being long-wearing. It also has moisturizing ingredients and “natural lip enhancers” that will plump lips. The consistency of Coeur Sucre isn’t too thick or too thin, and it’s not a gloss I’d call lightweight, but it doesn’t feel thick and goopy either. It has a gel-like texture initially, which is non-sticky, but after a half hour or so, it delivers a tackiness that gets rather sticky after an hour and a half (much as I experienced with Giorgio Armani Gloss d’Armani). It delivers semi-opaque color and applies surprisingly evenly for a gloss in this color–there is some minor settling into lip lines that is barely noticeable because of the high-shine finish.
Coeur Sucre wore for five and a half hours, which is longer than the average gloss wears (three to four hours; as little as two for lighter shades). I found the formula to be hydrating–sometimes when you wear just gloss all day long, your lips can easily show signs of dehydration, but even after twelve hours of wearing the Larger Than Life formula, my lips felt lush and lovely. I don’t see (or feel!) any plumping effect; the glossy shine does give lips a larger, more luminous appearance.
Here is what I loathe about this product–and I don’t use the word lightly–the applicator. It is like applying lipgloss with a toothpick, or nearly so. It’s just absolutely miniscule, and if you have very thin lips, I think this may be the applicator you’ve been looking for, but even you may find it takes several pumps of gloss to get enough product to cover your lips. I get that NARS is hoping this applicator will give you the precision you want, but it’s unnecessarily small. You can maneuver around the lip lines with something double the size. In order to cover my lips, I had to go back five times for color.
It's not quite the "intense color" that NARS promises, and the applicator is too small--it makes applying this a more painstaking process than it should be. I think there is a happy medium available; something slightly larger (perhaps wider), that's still a bit tapered and smaller than a doe-foot gloss, could still achieve precision without taking so much time.

MAC Reel Sexy Cremesheen Glasses ($19.50 for 0.09 fl. oz.) include these four shades: Cinestyle (mid-tone blue grey violet), Color Saturation (dark cool wine), Private Screening (mid-tone peach), and Star Quality (bright orange coral).
Cinestyle is a milky lilac that really settles into lip lines. The color is semi-sheer, and it’s definitely noticeable, but it just seeps into lip lines in a way I don’t see that often. MAC Vacant is a bit pinker and all shimmer. MAC Viva Glam is pinker but similar in creaminess. MAC Going Casual is pinker. MAC Japanese Spring is just a little lighter.
Color Saturation is a rich berry red with purple tones. It’s surprisingly opaque–the color coverage is semi-opaque but covers well and fairly evenly without settling too much into lip lines. MAC Real Posh is more muted and has shimmer. NARS Bougainville is much redder. MAC Indigo Pink is redder and shimmery. MAC Orange Tempera is peachier. MAC Bait is lighter, shimmery. MAC Fresh Air is very similar but has shimmer. MAC It’s a Wow is similar but has shimmer.
Private Screening is a pinky beige with a milky finish that does settle into lip lines a bit.
Star Quality is a pink-red coral with semi-opaque color coverage but it settles into lip lines a lot. MAC Mango Sheen is much redder. Revlon Strawberry is redder.
The Cremesheen Glass formula is lightweight, comfortable on, creamy, and non-sticky. The colors typically have no shimmer and deliver sheerer color, though Color Saturation and Star Quality yield quite a bit of color. With the exception of Color Saturation, these really seemed to slither into the lines on the lips and stay there. Cinestyle and Star Quality were the worst offenders for that. These would be better layered over a more opaque lip color, so that you could minimize that problem. Cremesheen Glasses only wear two hours or less on me, which is below average for a gloss. I feel like you go through a tube rather quickly, especially since it only contains 0.09 fl. oz. They are vanilla-scented but taste-free.
There is just too much color settling into lip lines with this particular batch of colors--the milky, creamy look with sheer to semi-sheer color payoff rarely works, and this is often the result.

Le Metier de Beaute Orange Juiced Sheer Brilliance Lipgloss ($32.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a medium tangerine with gold shimmer. On my lips, it gives them an orange-tint–it looks slightly darker and more like a tint than a colored gloss. There’s also a fine golden shimmer that catches light really well. Oddly enough, I couldn’t think of a perfect dupe for this. It’s sheer yet tinted enough that it adds color and hue to my lips that reads as natural as it could ever be. Do you have any suggestions for a dupe? Perhaps I am being extra forgetful!
The formula of the Sheer Brilliance Lipglosses is lightweight, non-sticky, moisturizing, and for such a sheer gloss, rather longer-wearing. When I wore Orange Juiced, it hung on for three and a half hours and didn’t get sticky over time (which is something I’ve noticed happens with some of the longer-wearing lipglosses out there). This is also a nicely moisturizing formula that leaves lips feeling softer after it wears away than when it was initially applied! The texture is wonderfully lightweight without being terribly thin; it’s comfortable to wear and gives off a healthy shine. There was no scent or taste that I could detect.
A lovely gloss formula that's comfortable to wear, moisturizing, and lightweight. It's part of a formula that's supposed to be sheerer, so if you're looking for a more opaque gloss, consider their Lip Cremes instead.

Burberry Nude Rose Lip Glow Natural Lipgloss< ($27.00 for 0.20 oz.) is a pink-beige that goes on mostly colorless. It looks like any number of sheer lipglosses that have nearly no perceptible shimmer. At best, it adds very subtle warmth to my natural lip color. At worst, it just adds a healthy dose of glossy shine and makes my natural lip color look more even. We’re at that line I find hard to rate at: when is “sheer” too sheer? When does sheer become colorless?
The gloss itself does have sheer color pigmentation, but the color matches my natural lip color so that it does not do much. For those with more pigmented lips, I suspect it’s going to do as little for you as it did for me. While I can appreciate that the formula is supposed to have sheerer color coverage, this is the kind of color that one doesn’t need a drawer full of, you know? If you don’t have a gloss that adds a little shine and warmth, and you’re on the lookout for a non-sticky, hydrating (at least, somewhat), and comfortable gloss, this could work. It only wore for two and a half hours on me, though, which is below average. Like other Burberry lip products, it is floral-scented.
Depending on the size of your gloss stash, you may have room for another gloss that doesn't add a lot of color but may feel good to wear. The shorter wear time was disappointing, though.
