Burberry Midnight Brown (02) Eye Definer Pencil
Burberry Midnight Brown (02) Eye Definer Pencil

Burberry Breaks My Heart

Burberry Midnight Brown Eye Definer Pencil ($27.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a rich, dark brown with golden flecks and subtly cool undertones. As beautiful as the color is, I didn’t have good luck with wear. When I wore it on the lower lash line, it seemed to disappear significantly within three to four hours.

It was creamy enough to apply a smooth, precise line without tugging on the lash line. The texture actually gave me false hope, because it seemed dry enough that it would have no problem staying put! I loved that it is a true pencil but the pencil itself did not feel harsh against my lid or lash line.

  • Product: 21/30
  • Value: 8/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: The color is gorgeous, and it would work so well with green and hazel eyes, but the wearability left too much to be desired to recommend it as a purchase.

Kat Von D Love & Fury Eyeshadow Palette
Kat Von D Love & Fury Eyeshadow Palette

Get Love & Fury with Kat Von D

Kat Von D Love & Fury (Adora) Eyeshadow Palette ($34.00 for 0.40 oz.) is a new and limited edition eyeshadow palette for the holidays that includes eight eyeshadows. There are five powder eyeshadows and three cream eyeshadows.

  • Albino is a sheer, shimmering silver-toned white.
  • Holy Bible is a bright blue-toned white with a metallic sheen.
  • Slayer is a bright metallic silver. This is a cream shadow, and it was a little on the drier side.
  • Glock is a darkened gray with a silver sheen.
  • Crucifix is a deep, dark black. It’s very creamy and smooth–it works well as an eyeliner in particular. This is a cream shadow.
  • Bloodletting is a burgundy red with purple flecks of shimmer. It is a little drier, like Slayer, but less so. This is a cream shadow.
  • Ace of Spades is a muted, gray-purple with soft violet flecksof shimmer. Just a touch sheer.
  • Oddfellow is a light gray-black with blue glitter flecks. This one was sheer and a little chalky for me.

The color scheme is very dark, foreboding, and it generally fits with the vibe I get from Kat Von D’s makeup line and the aesthetics of the range. If you love smokier looks, this is a palette with your name on it! It has four variations of silver/gray and then four dark, smoky shades.

I think the palette is decent, but I had a few issues with pigmentation on three of the powder eyeshadows (Albino, Ace of Spades, and Oddfellow). Oddfellow was the least pigmented and even looked it when swatched. It pops more when layered over the black base of Crucifix, but it’s hard to use on its own. Slayer is drier and the shimmer in the cream base makes it difficult to blend out evenly. Ace of Spades was a touch sheer while Abino was rather sheer. It’s more like a shade you’d dust over another shade because of the sheerness.

I like the concept more than the execution, just because for $38, there really shouldn’t be any sheer shades in it. I do, however, like that these are–essentially–the equivalent to eight full-sized eyeshadows, so you are getting plenty of bang for your buck. There are included brushes with the palette, but I don’t find them useful.

  • Product: 24/30
  • Value: 9/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: I would probably pass unless you really love all of the shades in this palette and don’t mind using darker bases to amp up some of the sheerer shades.

Bare Escentuals Buxom Do You Believe in Love at First Sight? Eyeliner Set
Buxom Do You Believe in Love at First Sight? Eyeliner Set

Love at First Sight Doesn’t Last

Buxom Do You Believe in Love at First Sight? Six Mini Eyeliners Set ($28.00 for 6 x 0.01 oz.) includes these shades: No. 1 (bright turquoise), No. 2(violet purple), No. 3 (pearl white), No. 4 (black), No. 5 (espresso), and No. 6 (gold with silver micro glitter).

  • No. 1 is a medium blue with a little aqua lean.
  • No. 2 is a brightened violet with satin sheen.
  • No. 3 is a frosted warm-toned white.
  • No. 4 is a medium-dark black.
  • No. 5 is a medium-dark brown with warm undertones.
  • No. 6 is a yellow gold with silver glitter.

These eyeliners look lovely when swatched, but they do not perform half as well on the eyes. They are drier and have a tendency to tug on the lash line, rather than glide-on and apply smooth, solid color. They pull and tug, which results in a faded, patchy look–not at all sexy! I don’t own any of Buxom’s Insider Eyeliners (which are their twist-up liners), but I did test them out in-store and found these to be incredibly different in formula. If you were hoping that this set was comparable, it’s definitely not.

I wasn’t able to achieve the pigmented, vibrant color on the lash line that I was able to get on my arm. The wear seemed to last, but since it already looked a bit patchy, it was hard to tell what faded. I wouldn’t say that wear is where this product goes wrong–it’s really the lack of creaminess or softness that would help the product glide on the lash line smoothly.

  • Product: 19/30
  • Value: 9/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

RECOMMENDATION: Skip these for a creamier, softer formula that glides onto the lash line rather than tugs at it.

Givenchy #14, MAC Prussian, Dolce & Gabbana #8, YSL #03, MUFE #3L, MAC Marine Ultra, UD Binge, Chanel Marine, tokidoki Skeletro, MUFE #15L

Dark/Navy Blue Eyeliner Comparisions & Dupes

As promised, here are navy blue pencil eyeliner comparisons! :)

  • Givenchy #14 Magic Khol is a sheer violet-toned navy blue.
  • MAC Prussian Powerpoint Eye Pencil is a darkened blue with a subtle violet edge.
  • Dolce & Gabbana #8 Eyeliner is a navy blue with satin sheen. (Review)
  • YSL Oriental Blue (03) Eyeliner is a medium-dark, brightened navy blue with a creamy finish. (Review)
  • Make Up For Ever #3L Aqua Eyes is a navy blue with satin sheen. (Review)
  • MAC Marine Ultra Chromagraphic Pencil is a medium-dark ocean blue with a creamy finish. (Review)
  • Urban Decay Binge 24/7 Liner is a darkened navy blue with purple tinge. (Review)
  • Chanel Marine Long-Lasting Eyeliner is a deep navy blue with a black-blue base and silver shimmer. (Review)
  • tokidoki Skeletro Glitter Eyeliner is a deep navy blue with a black-blue base and silver glitter. (Review)
  • Make Up For Ever #15L Aqua Eyes is a lightened dark blue with soft sheen. (Review)

Thoughts

DUPE ALERT! It appears that Dolce & Gabbana #8 Eyeliner and Make Up For Ever #3L Aqua Eyes are rather similar — possibly just the slightest difference in blue-ness.

DUPE ALERT!Both Chanel Marine Long-Lasting Eyeliner and tokidoki Skeletro Glitter Eyeliner are not far behind, just slightly darker and with a stronger blacker base, but the two themselves are quite similar. Skeletro has more glitter (whereas Marine has shimmer).

Formula/Wear: I have not tested Givenchy Magic Khol, so I cannot attest to its wear. YSL Eyeliners don’t seem to last all day on me, and Dolce & Gabbana can be hit or miss, but this particular shade lasted through a yoga session (and all day). tokidoki’s Glitter Eyeliners can be scratchy on the lash line because of the size of the glitter particles but wear fine otherwise.

CoverGirl Blue Boom, UD Deviant, Tarina Tarantino Glamorous Thief, NARS Kitty, MAC Hi-Def Cyan, Korres #13, MAC Smoothline, Milani Aqua, MUFE #7L, UD Electric, Tarina Tarantino Kanzashi, tokidoki Rondine

Blue Eyeliner Comparisions & Dupes

I think I may have more blue eyeliners than any other color in my stash. It’s definitely a close race between blue and green, though! These are just medium to light blues – I kept navy blues separate.

  • CoverGirl Blue Boom Liquiline Blast is a medium-dark ocean blue. (Review)
  • Urban Decay Deviant 24/7 Liner is a medium-dark ocean blue with subtle silver sparkle. (Review)
  • Tarina Tarantino Glamorous Thief Dream Hyperliner is a medium-dark ocean blue with subtle silver sparkle. (Review)
  • NARS Kitty Eyeliner is a medium-dark blue with a cream finish. (Review)
  • MAC Hi-Def Cyan Chromagraphic Pencil is a sky blue with a cream finish. (Review)
  • Korres #13 Eyeliner is a periwinkle blue with a cream finish.
  • MAC Smoothline Technakohl Liner is a darkened blue-based teal with a satin sheen. It’s more aqua than blue.
  • Milani Aqua Liquif’Eye Liner is a medium-dark teal. Though not included in this comparison, it is very similar to Urban Decay’s Covet. (Review)
  • Make Up For Ever #7L Aqua Eyes is a bright, lightened blue. (Review)
  • Urban Decay Electric 24/7 Liner is a bright, lightened blue. (Review)
  • Tarina Tarantino Kanzashi Dream Hyperliner is a bright, lightened blue. (Review)
  • tokidoki Rondine Glitter Eyeliner is a medium sky blue with silver glitter. (Review

Thoughts

DUPE ALERT! I think it’s safe to say that CoverGirl Blue Boom Liquiline Blast, Urban Decay Deviant 24/7 Liner, and Tarina Tarantino Glamorous Thief Dream Hyperliner are very, very similar. I would say they are dupes, with the exception of Glamorous Thief being a smidgen darker.

DUPE ALERT! It is apparent that Make Up For Ever #7L Aqua Eyes, Urban Decay Electric 24/7 Liner, and Tarina Tarantino Kanzashi Dream Hyperliner are very, very similar.

Formula/Wear: CoverGirl Liquiline Blast and NARS Eyeliner are the only two that have any issues based on my experience. CoverGirl just requires more layering, as it is not as pigmented as the other shades here. NARS, however, I’ve had a lot of migrating issues with, but I encourage you to read the review and the comments. tokidoki Glitter Eyeliner stays on well but can be scratchy against the lash line due to the glitter particles.

UD Baked, MUFE #10L, UD Lucky, MUFE #23L, UD Midnight Cowboy

Bronze/Copper Eyeliner Comparisions & Dupes

I wanted to separate my bronzes from my browns and golds, just because they do seem like a category on its own… the problem was I didn’t really have very many to compare.

  • Urban Decay Baked 24/7 Liner is a warmed over bronze with flecks of copper. It is very similar to Make Up For Ever’s #10L. (Review)
  • Make Up For Ever #10L Aqua Eyes is a warm bronze with gold sheen. It is very similar to Urban Decay’s Baked. (Review)
  • Urban Decay Lucky 24/7 Liner is a dark copper brown with sheen. (Review)
  • Make Up For Ever #23L Aqua Eyes is a pale champagne beige with a high sheen. It is slightly lighter than Urban Decay’s Midnight Cowboy. (Review)
  • Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy 24/7Liner is a pale champagne beige with shine. It is slightly darker than Make Up For Ever #23L. (Review)

Thoughts

DUPE ALERT! It looks like Urban Decay Baked 24/7 Liner and Make Up For Ever #10L Aqua Eyes are dupes! The Urban Decay version seems like its copper flecks are more apparent.

DUPE ALERT! It looks like Make Up For Ever #23L Aqua Eyes and Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy 24/7 Liner are near dupes–Urban Decay’s is slightly darker, but the two are incredibly close. If you can’t shell out $92 for the entire liner set, #23L will hold you over in the meanwhile.

Formula/Wear:  Both Urban Decay’s 24/7 Liners and Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes wear very well on me–both last all day.  Urban Decay’s formula is slightly softer, but they both glide on well.
