Guerlain Cygne Noir (10) Ecrin 2 Couleurs Eyeshadow Duo

Guerlain Cygne Noir (10) Ecrin 2 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.14 oz.) pairs a shimmery black with a deepened burgundy purple. It’s a very dark, smoky color combination. I liked it better combined with other products for greater contrast, but the two can definitely be worn together. It could be better performing, particularly at this price, I’d rather not see a so-so shade like the shimmery black.

Tarte Sweet Indulgences Holiday Gift Set

Tarte Sweet Indulgences Holiday Gift Set ($59.97 for 2.60 oz.) is a three-piece set, where there are three, slim square boxes that are designed to be given as gifts. You can keep them all for yourself, break the set up, or gift the entire thing. One box contains two blushes and three lip colors, another with three eyeliners and two mascaras, and a third with two eyeshadow palettes (eight shades in each). Overall, I think the Lip Cremes and the Eyeshadows are the stars, but the rest leaves me unimpressed: one blush was a complete miss (worst product in the set), while the three eyeliners were rougher, drier formula. Some of the eyeshadows are very nice, others are sheerer and don’t perform as well. I noticed the eyeshadow formula seemed thinner in this palette across the board, which made a lot of shades seem less powdery, but some were under-pigmented. There’s plenty of “value” to the set, but I think it just depends on what you wanted most.

Dior Golden Shock (756) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Golden Shock (756) Eyeshadow Palette ($60.00 for 0. 21 oz.) is a limited edition palette that features five shades in hues of pink, gold, plum, and purple. It performed better than Golden Reflections (0460), at least, though I’m not sold on it. It also seems to overlap with Trafalgar at a glance, though it isn’t quite one-for-one. The quality of this palette is decent to good, with the more problematic shade being the richer purple (which seemed better initially), as the texture was thinner and drier, so blending was more difficult without a smoothing base.

Dior Golden Reflections (046) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Golden Reflections (046) Eyeshadow Palette ($60.00 for 0. 21 oz.) is a limited edition palette that features five shades ranging from gray to gold to beige. I think Dior does interesting color combinations at times, but I find that too often the quality of their eyeshadows is lacking. If you prefer a softer, sheerer, more muted look out of shades like these, you may enjoy this palette. If you want more true-to-pan color, I would skip.

Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book

Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book ($55.00 for 1.20 oz.) includes 24 eyeshadows from matte to frost. Perhaps the best way to start this review is to say that the formula used in the palette is inconsistent with previous palette releases from Kat Von D; they feel more powdery, softer, and in general, there’s a cheaper, chalkier quality across the board. Even shades that had better color payoff still had a dryness to them that feels like the eyeshadow has more filler in it than is ideal. These absolutely need a primer to even stand a chance; they just were miserable to use without primer, as they didn’t blend together well, while several shades went on much more muted. Then, of course, there is the issue of Gothica, which is a bit like a slap in the face (eye?), given that it is like loose micro-glitter without any base or binders. Brands should do better, and it’s such a shame when they put out inferior products that make customers question the brand’s reliability going forward. I’d recommend checking out her Chrysalis or Monarch palettes, if you’re determined to snag a Kat Von D palette this holiday season.
