Bobbi Brown Violet Plum Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Bobbi Brown Violet Plum Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Bobbi Brown Violet Plum Long-Wear Cream Bark Stick ($28.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “deep shimmer eggplant.” It’s a dark, shimmering plum with red undertones and subtle plum, red, and violet shimmer. Bobbi Brown Black Violet is a touch less red-toned but otherwise is very comparable. Urban Decay Tornado is a powder eyeshadow, and it’s a bit purpler. I was surprised not to find more similar shades.

It has semi-opaque color coverage, but I was not able to build up the color to get fully opaque color, and compared to the other shades, the pigmentation in a single stroke was noticeably sheerer.  The color applied evenly, which is important, because uneven, sheer color is something that can look off even from a distance.  I did experience some very light creasing after eight hours, though it did not seem to worsen too much more when I checked at the ten-hour mark.  The consistency was creamy enough that it glided on and didn’t pull at the lid, and it didn’t take too long or too little time to set.

Benefit Gilt-y Pleasure Longwear Powder Eyeshadow

Benefit Gilt-y Pleasure Eyeshadow
Benefit Gilt-y Pleasure Eyeshadow

Benefit Gilt-y Pleasure Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “golden sand.” It’s a warm-toned, orange-gold with a metallic finish. Tarte Canary Diamond is a bit more orange and darker. Chanel Vision is more metallic and sparkly but similar in color. L’Oreal Eternal Sunshine is yellower. Dior Night Golds #4 is less metallic. Milani Drenched in Gold is very similar in color but more frosted in finish.

It had good color payoff (but was just short of perfection), but the real wonder was the texture:  so soft and smooth.  It really applied well and went on smoothly and adhered to the lid for a whopping ten hours without fading or creasing. Gilt-y Pleasure blended out easily when I worked with it.  The brighter, warmer coloring paired with the high-shine finish makes it work well to brighten and open up the eyes (particularly on warmer skin tones).

For reference, it also appears in Benefit’s Most Glamorous Nudes Ever Palette–I make a point to mention that, because the palette itself is $30 but contains three other eyeshadows along with two Creaseless Cream Eyeshadows; more or less, unless you really hate the other products, it’s hard to justify $20 for one eyeshadow when you could be paying $30 and receiving six different products.

Bobbi Brown Vanilla Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Bobbi Brown Vanilla Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick
Bobbi Brown Vanilla Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Bobbi Brown Vanilla Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick ($28.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “warm cream.” It’s a warm-toned beige with a creamy, mostly matte finish. Estee Lauder Halo is a touch lighter and frosted. Maybelline Barely Branded is also lighter and more frosted. MAC Soft Ochre is less warm-toned (more neutral).

Of the shades released, Vanilla is best-suited for a (mostly) universal base for your favorite eyeshadows.  On lighter lids, it can also work simply to brighten.  It has a very creamy finish, and it goes on with opaque color coverage without needing to build up the color.  The texture is lightly creamy; enough creaminess to help it glide on without pulling or tugging on the lid but not so much that it creases.  It does set a bit faster than other shades, so work quickly if you want to blend out the edges or blend it with other shades.  Even after ten hours, the color remained opaque and crease-free (and it’s rated to last for eight).

Benefit Kiss Me, I’m Tipsy Longwear Powder Shadow

Benefit Kiss Me, I’m Tipsy Longwear Powder Shadow

Benefit Kiss Me, I’m Tipsy Longwear Powder Shadow ($20.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “spiced brown.” It’s a warm-toned, medium-dark brown with a satin finish. Benefit Dandy Brandy is more frosted but the colors are very similar. NARS Surabaya #1 is darker. Guerlani Turandot #4 is darker and more red-toned. MAC Mulch is a touch more shimmery. If you have the Most Glamorous Nudes palette, you’ll find this shade is included in it (and the palette is $30 and includes 4x 0.04 oz. eyeshadows plus 2x 0.11 oz. Creaseless Cream eyeshadows).

This shade had excellent pigmentation, and the texture was lovely–soft, smooth, and finely-milled. It blended beautifully and easily on the lid, and there was no powderiness despite it having such a soft feel. It wore just over eight hours on me (no primer) without fading or creasing but there was some faint fading after nine hours.  It’s definitely a standout shade within the range, though you may have something similar to it already.

Chanel Pearl River Ombres Matelassees Eyeshadow Palette

Chanel Pearl River Ombres Matelassees Eyeshadow Palette
Chanel Pearl River Ombres Matelassees Eyeshadow Palette

Chanel Pearl River Ombres Matelassees Eyeshadow Palette ($80.00 for 0.21 oz.) contains five eyeshadows that range from white to brown designed to “[recall] the luminous beauty of Hong Kong, refleted in the China Sea.”

Pearl River #1 is a pale, warm white with a frosted finish. It had decent color payoff, but it was on the sheer side. It was buildable, but it wasn’t densely pigmented. The texture was incredibly soft and finely-milled, though; one of the softest textures I’ve seen from Chanel. There is no shortage of frosted, white eyeshadow, so it’s highly likely that you have something similar in your stash. Giorgio Armani Open is not as warm-toned. Tarte Macaroon is similar but even less pigmented. bareMinerals Silhouette is more pearl-like in finish. Guerlain Terra Azzurra #1 is also similar.

Pearl River #2 is a warm-toned, light-medium gold with soft yellow undertones and a frosted, slightly metallic finish. It had good pigmentation, and the texture was very soft and smooth. Jasmine Sand in the Glass is more metallic. Tarte Bellini is less frosted. Wet ‘n’ Wild Sparkle ‘Til Morning #1 is less warm-toned. MAC Femme-fi has a more reflective sheen. (This shade, though certainly pretty, is very, very dupable–nearly ever shade I mentioned above is 90% similar in regards to color.)

Pearl River #3 is a warm, orange-toned gold with a frosted, metallic finish. It had so-so color payoff, and I found I really needed to use it wet to get smooth, even color applied to the lid. I wasn’t sure if you could use these wet, but I didn’t have any residual effects on the pan of product where I used it damp. Lancome Eternal Gold is less warm-toned. Tarte 24 Karats is less frosted. Cinderella Gus Gus is yellower. bareMinerals Remix is a touch less orange. Chanel Blazing Gold is very similar in color.

Pearl River #4 is a tangerine orange with warm undertones and a pearly finish. It had great pigmentation, and it applied very smoothly. MAC Chessa is a touch warmer. OCC Mimosa is a smidgen lighter. MAC Fresh Daily is darker. Chanel Tigerlily is yellower.

Pearl River #5 is a rich, deep dark brown with warm, red undertones and a very fine burgundy-bronze micro-shimmer. The color payoff was absolutely fantastic; it was incredibly rich and smooth–the best shade of the palette. Wet ‘n’ Wild Sparkle ‘Til Morning #8 is a hair lighter but not by much. Urban Decay Busted is less red-toned. Tarina Tarantino Dreamy #5 is darker, almost blackened.

I liked the palette, but the color payoff overall could have been better. If you prefer lighter, sheerer washes of colors, you may still enjoy the palette. The texture of all of the shades is phenomenal; that’s the standout feature: beautifully soft, velvety eyeshadows that go on and sit so well on the lid. All five eyeshadows also blended well and only needed a feathery touch to diffuse. The other downside to the palette is that it is rather dupable (and of course, this depends on your stash), but I felt like there were far too many really, really close shades to a few of the ones in the palette. The “most unique” shade in the palette was the darker brown. The eyeshadows wore well, though, and lasted nine hours without fading or creasing (no primer), but I did have a touch of fall out.

Bobbi Brown Sand Dune Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Bobbi Brown Sand Dune Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick
Bobbi Brown Sand Dune Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Bobbi Brown Sand Dune Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick ($28.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “medium beige tan.” It’s a subtly warm-toned, medium beige-tan with a mostly matte finish. Urban Decay Beware is darker and matte. Too Faced Marzipan is lighter. MAC One to Watch is very similar in color. MAC Tete-a-tint is warmer and matte.

Sand Dune will work well as a more neutral base as well as a brightening lid color (depending on your skin tone).  It tends to give my natural lid a more even, warmer look without being too drastically different from the skin tone (and I have a medium complexion with warm undertones).  The consistency is creamy and glides on well over the lid without pulling or tugging, and the color deposits evenly and with opaque color.  Though still creamy, it was just slightly drier compared to some of the other shades. It dried down fast enough not to gather into the creases but gave me enough time to blend and work it into the lid.  It wore well for a full eight hours, though I went as far as ten hours and still didn’t have problems with creasing or fading.
