Sephora Surfin’ USA and Midnight Swim Colorful Eyeshadow

Sephora Surfin' USA (14) Colorful Eyeshadow
Sephora Surfin’ USA (14) Colorful Eyeshadow

Sephora Surfin’ USA (14) Colorful Eyeshadow ($13.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as an “azure blue shimmer.” It’s a bright, medium blue with a hint of yellow that gives it an aqua/teal leaning (but it’s more blue than it is teal). It has a pearly sheen. Shades like Inglot #322, Inglot #371, MAC Electric Eel, and NARS Mad, Mad World #1 are all a bit bluer and matte, so the finish makes them rather different in practice. Make Up For Ever #118 is lighter. Make Up For Ever #83 is slightly greener-tinted and has a golden shimmer. MAC Parrot is darker. Sugarpill Afterparty is bluer, darker. Urban Decay Peace is lighter. Urban Decay Clash is also bluer (and a cream product). NARS South Pacific #1 is lighter. See comparison swatches here.

Applied damp, Surfin’ USA had good color payoff and went on smoothly but wasn’t quite as vibrant as when applied damp; then, it became even smoother, bolder, and fully pigmented. The texture is soft, buttery, and blendable on the lid. I had no trouble with it wearing all day long without fading or creasing (no primer) either. It’s definitely one of the best shades I’ve come across in Sephora’s Colorful range. This shade did lightly stain my skin after wearing it all day long.

Sephora Midnight Swim (16) Colorful Eyeshadow ($13.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “petrol blue shimmer.” It’s a smoky, bluish-teal with a frosted finish. Urban Decay Junkie is a couple of shades lighter. Urban Decay Hijack is grayer, lighter. MAC Prussian is matte and bluer. MAC Rain Drop is lighter. Sugarpill Magpie is more frosted, so it appears slightly lighter, but it is the closest shade to Midnight Swim. See comparison swatches here.

The color payoff was the same whether applied dry or damp, but the finish changed from satiny to pearly–it’s more shimmery and reflective when applied damp. Both applications resulted in smooth, even color, and it was easy to blend out on the lid. Midnight Swim had a lovely soft, silky-smooth texture that made it easy to work with and yielded fantastic pigmentation. It lasted ten hours without creasing or fading when I tested it (no primer).

AVEDA Lemongrass and Oceanica Eyeshadows

Aveda Lemongrass Petal Essence Single Eye Color
Aveda Lemongrass Petal Essence Single Eye Color

Aveda Lemongrass Petal Essence Single Eye Color ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “satiny, light, iridescent green.” It’s a lightened, pastel green with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff, and it applied well. When I tested it, the shade lasted eight hours with some minimal fading. bareMinerals Wicked ius lighter, not as warm-toned. MAC Juxt is slightly warmer. Dior Peacock #1 is slightly darker. Dior Peacock #5 is lighter. Urban Decay Jealous #2 is darker. Aveda Papyrus is darker, less frosted. See comparisons here.

Aveda Oceanica Petal Essence Single Eye Color ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “satiny, bright, island blue.” It’s a medium, muted blue with a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation and applied smoothly, but it did look noticeably faded after I wore it for eight hours. Dior Swimming Pool Turquoise is lighter. MAC Cool Heat is much darker. Guerlain Les Aquas #2 is slightly less blue. L’Oreal Endless Sea is a touch darker. MAC Parrot is bolder, slightly darker. Make Up For Ever #72 is brighter and matte. Tom Ford Emerald Lust #3 is darker, more frosted. See comparison swatches here.

L’Oreal Endless Pearl, Dive Right In, Infinite Sky Infallible Eyeshadow

L'Oreal Endless Pearl 24HR Infallible Eyeshadow
L’Oreal Endless Pearl 24HR Infallible Eyeshadow

L’Oreal Endless Pearl In 24HR Infallible Eyeshadow ($7.95 for 0.14 oz.) is a pale beige with neutral-to-warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had good color payoff, but it has the kind of texture that works best dry, as it tends to crumble and stick to itself when applied wet (so it doesn’t apply as smoothly).  Dry, it can be somewhat powdery and may look chalky on darker complexions.  This is a shade you’ll find across brands, but it’s a great basic shade that works well as a highlighter on lighter complexions or as a neutralizing color to sweep over the lid to even out their color. Bobbi Brown Ivory, MAC Shroom (warmer, satiny), Urban Decay Walk of Shame, Wet ‘n’ Wild Drinking a Glass of Shine #5, Urban Decay Anonymous (satiny), theBalm Adagio, and MAC Brule are all rather similar.

Dive Right In is an iridescent aqua blue with a frosted, metallic sheen. It had so-so color payoff when applied dry and was semi-opaque when applied damp–it was smoother when applied damp as well. This shade creased on me noticeably after eight hours of wear (no primer). This is a limited edition shade, so you’ll likely have to find it at a local drugstore (I received this as a press sample; the other two shades I purchased myself). Giorgio Armani #10 is more silvered. Make Up For Ever #150 is bluer, less iridescent. Giorgio Armani Ecailles Black Pearl #3 is much darker.

Infinite Sky is a cool-toned, medium-dark silver-shimmered blue. Applied dry, it is sheerer, while it intensifies when applied damp–and the frosted sheen becomes more pronounced as well. MAC Dimensional Blue is a smidgen lighter. MAC Moon’s Reflection is a touch darker. Urban Decay Mary Jane is bluer.

I didn’t have any wear issues with either Endless Pearl or Infinite Sky, but Dive Right In did crease noticeably after only eight hours of wear (and these are 24-hour wear, technically). I tested all three shades for a total of fourteen hours, and the other two looked about the same as when I had applied them (no fading or creasing). The texture of the three were consistent; soft, finely-milled, and mostly smooth. Endless Pearl has such a matte finish that wet application didn’t go well compared to a lot of the shimmery shades in the range (and this wasn’t unexpected–a lot of products with matte finishes don’t turn out well if applied wet).

AVEDA Petal Essence Eyeshadows (Papyrus, Bare Bellis, Lantana, Cinnamon Bark)

Aveda Papyrus Eyeshadow
Aveda Papyrus Eyeshadow

For spring/summer, Aveda Eyeshadow ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) released several shades, and I’m reviewing four of them in this post. The Petal Essence eyeshadow formula is supposed to be “non-fading,” “flower wax-infused,” “silky,” and “both color-true and crease-resistant.”  Two of the shades I tried were powdery, while the other two were soft and smooth.  The color payoff varied between good and great, but I noticed that these had a tendency to fade after seven hours of wear (without a primer), with Cinnamon Bark being the lone shade that lasted for a full eight hours without fading or creasing.  All four shades were blendable during application.

Papyrus is described as a “satiny, budding green.” It’s a warm, chartreuse green with a satiny sheen. It had decent color payoff, but the color looked slightly faded applied. The texture was soft and a bit powdery. Dior Peacock #1 is lighter and more shimmery. Buxom Shish Tzu is darker and a cream product. Dior Garden Pastels #1 is darker and more frosted. MAC Juxt is lighter.

Bare Bellis is described as a “satiny, baby pink.” It’s a rosy beige with subtle, warm undertones and a satiny sheen. It had good color payoff, but the texture was so soft that it was also powdery. Cinderella Midnight Hour is more beige and frosty. Urban Decay Laced is matte and slightly more beige. MAC Love Spice is more frosted.

Lantana is described as a “satiny, fresh coral.” It’s a softened, peachy brown with a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff and wasn’t powdery. Chanel Eclosion is more frosted.

Cinnamon Bark is described as a “satiny, rich mahogany.” It’s a rich, burgundy red with a satiny finish and strong, warm undertones.  The texture was soft and smooth but not powdery, and the pigmentation was rich and intense. Chanel Eclosion #4 is purpler, less warm-toned. Maybelline Pomegranate Punk is more burgundy and frosted. MAC Festive Delight #4 is similar. MAC Cranberry is more frosted. Inglot #452 is more frosted as well.

Dior Lilas Mitzah (176) Mono Eyeshadow

Dior Lilas Mitzah (176) Mono Eyeshadow
Dior Lilas Mitzah (176) Mono Eyeshadow

Dior Lilas Mitzah (176) Diorshow Mono Eyeshadow ($29.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a violet purple with pink undertones and a frosted sheen. Urban Decay Vice is darker, less pink-toned. Urban Decay Freakshow is much darker. Make Up For Ever #26 is slightly pinker and a cream product. MAC Butterfly Party is more frosted. MAC Violet is similar. Inglot #441 is lighter, brighter.

The newer Diorshow Mono Eyeshadow formula can be used wet or dry, depending on the intensity you desire. Applied dry, Lilas Mitzah was actually rather pigmented–nicely opaque with a soft, silky-smooth texture that applied evenly and blended out with ease. I haven’t had great luck across this range with the brighter pops of color, but Lilas Mitzah was a winner.  The texture has that soft feel you really look and expect from high-end brands.  When I tested the wear, it lasted well for eight hours, and then I noticed some slight fading after nine hours (without a primer).

Urban Decay Snatch Eyeshadow

Urban Decay Snatch Eyeshadow
Urban Decay Snatch Eyeshadow

Urban Decay Snatch Eyeshadow ($18.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “pale peach shimmer with gold glitter.” It’s a warm-toned, peachy-pink with gold glitter and a frosted finish. Flower Beauty Foxy Browns #1 is lighter and less frosted. Le Metier de Beaute Nouvelle is slightly less pink and has no glitter. Urban Decay Scratch is a touch warmer, slightly darker.

There are a lot of things to love about Snatch, but long-time readers likely know that the micro-glitter is the one aspect of this eyeshadow that brings it down a notch.  I love glitter, but it has to stick if it’s going to be put into a product like this.  Or else the brand needs to fess up and tell us it needs to be used with XYZ product to make the glitter stay put (rather than saying it won’t fall out on its own).  The little glittery bits in this eyeshadow do fall out both during application and later on during wear.  It’s not full of glitter, so it’s a more manageable quantity, and it’s slight enough that I’d still wear this eyeshadow and not worry much over it.  It is, though, annoying.  The underlying color is rich in color, buttery and smooth in texture.  It applies smoothly, evenly, and stays on for the nine hours I tested it without fading or creasing.
