Try a Shimmering Eggplant Eyeliner with a Neutral Eye

shu uemura Blackish Satin Purple Painting Liner ($25.00 for 0.098 oz.) is a darkened eggplant purple with very fine purple and burgundy micro-shimmer. In pencil form, Urban Decay Crash and Urban Decay Rockstar are both similar. Bobbi Brown Black Plum is a bit darker. Maybelline Plum is a dead-on dupe.

It’s creamy and has good pigmentation, so a single pass of product (I used MAC’s 208 brush to apply) yielded mostly opaque color coverage without skipping or tugging.  When I tested it, the shade lasted eight hours without fading or migrating. It might seem a little intimidating, because it does have red in it, but there’s a lot of purple, some darkness, and that faint shimmer that makes it easier to wear than other red-toned purples.  I think it works particularly well with neutral eyes or to accent gold or copper eyeshadows.

Tarte Treat Yourself to Gorgeous Collection (Part 2)

Tarte Treat Yourself to Gorgeous Collection

Tarte’s Treat Yourself Eyeliners and Glosses

Tarte Treat Yourself to Gorgeous ($49.98) contains four lipglosses, four eyeliners, and twenty eyeshadows. This review focuses on the lipglosses and eyeliners. The lipglosses include: Genuine (sheer, creamy pink), Darling (soft pink shade), Giddy (soft coral pink), and Brazen (bright rose). The eyeliners include: Bronze (golden brown), Black Orchid (black purple), Black Brown (black brown), and Black (black).

Eyeliners

  • Bronze is a medium-dark, warm-toned brown with bronze shimmer. It had decent pigmentation in a single pass, but it can be built up.
  • Black Orchid is a blackened purple with plum and pink shimmer. It had good color payoff in one go, but it was not as buildable as Bronze, because the shimmer was a little large.
  • Black Brown is a dark brown with cool undertones. It had excellent pigmentation in one stroke.
  • Black is a dark black with a matte finish. It had so-so payoff in a single pass, but it is very buildable.

The texture of the eyeliners was rather creamy, and the shades glided across the skin easily.  I wore both Bronze and Black Orchid to test out the wear, and both lasted in some capacity for eight hours. I noticed that both shades had disappeared over time such that the line I applied just looked thinner, but I didn’t have any eyeliner lingering in my outer corners. Both eyeliners had thinned noticeably by the sixth hour. The Cashmere Eyeliners are supposed to be long-wearing and waterproof. I found the eyeliners to be fairly waterproof, just not fantastic, perfect-wear for eight hours.  Each eyeliner twists-up and contains 0.01 oz. of product (this is the norm for these types of eyeliners, believe it or not!).

Lipglosses

Genuine is a milky neutral pink with semi-opaque color coverage. Because it’s not too pale, it looks better than a lot of milky glosses. It does settle into lip lines just slightly, and it can bunch up on itself and look uneven. NARS International Velvet is lighter. Bobbi Brown Pink Sorbet is lighter and pinker.

Darling is a yellow-toned, light-medium pink with a smattering of gold sparkle. It looked a lot like Genuine from afar. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage. MAC Warm Embrace is lighter. Chanel Troublant is more mauve. Chanel Caprice is more shimmery. MAC Floating Lotus has more white shimmer.

Giddy is a milky, light-medium coral with soft pink shimmer scattered through it. It had semi-opaque color coverage. MAC Razzledazzler is lighter. MAC So Vain is more coral, less pink.

Brazen is a rosy, medium-dark pink. It has semi-opaque color coverage and while there are tiny bits of shimmer, they’re almost invisible to the eye. MAC Revenge is Sweet is purpler. MAC Galaxy Rose is very comparable.

Each lipgloss contains 0.11 fl. oz. and comes in a click-tube dispenser with a brush attached to it. This kind of packaging is probably my least favorite for gloss, because unless you’re vigilant about cleaning the applicator, it gets gunky quickly. I also think it’s harder to control the amount of gloss you get for some reason; I either click too many times or not enough. Tarte’s Maracuja Divine Shine Lipgloss is supposed to be moisturizing, hydrating, glossy, and “rich shades [that range] from soft to vivid.” They’re somewhat sticky, wear about three hours a piece, and are lightly hydrating. They have a strong mint scent and light tingling when initially applied.

P.S. — One of my eyes is ridiculously bloodshot. Apparently, it was like that all day (it still is, 10 hours later). I didn’t even notice until I took photos, and I just wanted to assure you it’s not a result of the palette or eyeliner, because it looked like that when in the very first photo I took for the tutorial (so I hadn’t even put anything on yet!).

Urban Decay Smoked Eyeliner Set

Urban Decay Smoked Eyeliner Set
Urban Decay Smoked Eyeliner Set

Make Smoky Eyes Pop with Colored Eyeliner

Urban Decay Smoked Eyeliner Set ($38.00 for 6 x 0.03 oz.) contains six travel-sized pencil eyeliners, including two set-exclusive shades: Uzi (gunmetal taupe with silver micro-glitter), Zero (zealous black), Demolition (deep brown matte), Smog (copper), Empire (dark eggplant satin), and Mainline (dark green/blue matte).

  • Uzi is a brown-tinged gray with a silver sparkle. It looks more silver-like when applied, but the sheerer or more smudged it is, the browner it looks. It has so-so color payoff in a single pass.
  • Zero is a medium-dark black with a mostly matte finish. It had good pigmentation in a single stroke, and it’s a good basic black.
  • Demolition is a medium-dark brown with subtle warm undertones and a matte finish. Like Zero, it’s a good basic shade of brown. The color payoff is decent in a single pass, but it layers well. MAC Brownborder is warmer, redder-toned. Milani Brown is similar; a touch cooler-toned.
  • Smog is a coppered-bronze with a pearly sheen. It had decent to good payoff in one go.
  • Empire is a violet purple with very, very fine blue micro-shimmer–the shimmer isn’t noticeable on, and it looks mostly matte when applied. It didn’t have great color payoff in a single pass, but it was buildable. MAC Permaplum is similar but more shimmery.
  • Mainline is a blue-teal with a matte finish. It had decent pigmentation in a single go, and it layered fairly well. Estee Lauder Electric Teal is more turquoise and lighter.

For many years, Urban Decay’s 24/7 Eye Pencils were my favorite eyeliners, and while they’re not my absolute favorites, I still love them and use them regularly.  They wear eight hours on me without migrating or disappearing, and they come in a variety of colors, making the range versatile and easy to go to.  Urban Decay’s eyeliner sets are an excellent way to get multiple colors for a fraction of the price of them full-sized.  Keep in mind, full-size is 0.04 oz., and these are 0.03 oz. a pop–25% less but each liner costs $6.33 (compared to $19.00).  This set contains $85.50 worth of eyeliner, so it’s a great deal.  Urban Decay eyeliners are buildable, and they’ll look opaque when layered (go back-and-forth once or twice).

MAC Divine Desire Quite Coral Kit

MAC Divine Desire Quite Coral Kit
MAC Divine Desire Quite Coral Kit

More Peach Awaits You!

MAC Divine Desire Quite Coral Kit ($70.00) contains Born to Love (blush, coral), In a Heartbeat (Lipstick, pale clean coral), and Pure Flattery (Lipglass, soft coral cream), and Photogravure (Technakohl Liner, deep chocolate brown).

The blush is 0.09 oz. (not full-size, it is about the size of the larger MAC eyeshadow pots), lipglass is 0.17 oz. (full-sized), lipstick is 0.10 oz. (full-sized), and eyeliner is 0.012 oz. (full-sized). The kit contains $53.00 worth of product, excluding the brush. The full-sized 129 retails for $35, but MAC does not sell SE brushes on their own (SE brushes are machine-made, while full-sized or SH brushes are handmade). The whole set is housed in a peach satin container with a glossy black trim and bow at the enclosure. You could use it as a very small clutch later on, as the plastic insert is removable. If it’s packaging you would reuse, then this set has more value to you than the products alone.

Born to Love is a coral-pink with a brown-ish tinge that is what gives it a subdued quality. There’s a delicate champagne-gold shimmer-sheen. The way this blush applies yields a very ethereal finish–a little glow but not a lot of frost, even it does have a frost finish officially. It is on the sheer side, though; it doesn’t add a lot of color to my medium complexion, and I layered three passes of color for swatches. For light to light-medium complexions, this will be lovely. MAC Legendary is lighter, pinker. Guerlain Peach Boy is very similar. Tom Ford Lovelust has a warmer, slightly pinker sheen, but they are similar.

In a Heartbeat is a soft, warm peach with a hint of pink–but it’s mostly peach. It has opaque color coverage, and it has Cremesheen finish. MAC Reel Sexy is a bit more coral. YSL Peach Passion is a touch darker. Illamasqua Brink is similar–more matte. is lighter.

Pure Flattery is a warm peach with multi-colored micro-shimmer (looks mostly white/champagne). On lips, it’s a soft, medium peach with semi-opaque color coverage. Guerlain Sable Show is lighter, more beige. MAC Naked Space is creamier, lighter. MAC Poetic License has less shimmer.

Photogravure is a dark chocolate brown with warm undertones. It has good payoff in a single pass and can be layered. Chanel Brun-Teak is similar. MAC Brownborder is also similar.

Born to Love is a shade I could see a lot of people wanting, and it’s a bummer that it’s part of this pricey kit and not a standalone item!  I wasn’t able to get true-to-pan color, though, so darker complexions will find it acts more as a highlighter than a blusher.  When I tested the wear, it lasted six hours but was noticeably faded by the seventh hour.  In a Heartbeat wore for four hours, and it was just a bit drying.  Pure Flattery lasted three and a half hours.  Photogravure is similar to other warm brown eyeliners on the market, but it lasted for eight hours without fading.

As stated before, the included 129SE brush is similar to the full-sized version, which is already a somewhat scratchy brush.  It is a little scratchier than the full-sized version, but I found it was more prone to shedding after two or three washes.  It also seemed to get scratchier after washing, too, than it was when I initially opened up the kit.

MAC Decadently Pink Eye Look Bag

MAC Decadently Pink Eye Look Bag
MAC Decadently Pink Eye Look Bag

A Bag of Holiday Tricks

MAC Decadently Pink Eye Look Bag ($46.50) contains an eyeshadow duo that features Radial Pink (powder pink with silver sheen pearl) and Shadowy Lady (blackened plum). Shadowy Lady is permanent. It also includes a 275SE brush, Opulash Mascara, and Bordeauxline (deep rich brown) eyeliner. The eyeshadow duo is 0.09 oz (full-sized), Powerpoint Eye Pencil is 0.04 oz. (full-sized), Opulash Mascara is .38 oz. (full-sized). The total value of the kit is $58.50 for the cosmetics in it; this doesn’t include the value of the brush and bag.

Radial Pink is pale white with a hint of pink and a frosted, metallic sheen. The finish is officially a frost. It has so-so pigmentation. Chanel Harmonie du Soir is pinker. Tarina Tarantino Delightful is similar, slightly cooler-toned. Bare Escentuals Muse is less frosty. MAC Defiance is more iridescent.

Shadowy Lady is a blackened purple with a matte finish. It’s dry, stubborn in texture, and the color is a bit uneven. When I applied it to the lid, it wasn’t as blendable as a really good matte eyeshadow is. This shade is part of the permanent range, and it’s an often-included shade in holiday palettes. MAC Spellcaster is more purple. MAC Indian Ink is more purple, richer.

Bordeauxline is eggplant purple with a matte finish. It has decent color payoff, but it doesn’t build well, so it always look a bit faded and uneven. Make Up For Ever #4L is similar but has a sheen. CoverGirl Violet Voltage is comparable.

To reiterate:  the bag that this comes with is small, and the mascara and eyeliner barely fit in it.  You have to make sure to push them to the bottom and wiggle them in at an angle. I was surprised to see the bag that they came with wasn’t an easy fit.  It’s a clear vinyl bag with leopard and lace printing on the exterior/interior with a minty green satin beneath it.

The best product in the set is actually the mascara, which wears well and lengthens nicely.  The three color products are okay but none of them are top notch, excellent products.  Shadowy Lady is difficult to work with and needs patience to use, while Radial Pink had a tendency to fade–it was noticeably patchy after six hours over a primer.  Bordeauxline looks uneven and faded, never looking as rich on as it does in the pencil itself.  The eyeliner lasted seven hours but was noticeably faded after eight.

MAC Sensual Peach Eye Look Bag

MAC Sensual Peach Eye Look Bag
MAC Sensual Peach Eye Look Bag

A Bag of Holiday Tricks

MAC Sensual Peach Eye Look Bag ($46.50) contains an eyeshadow duo that features Dazzle Me (light peach with gold pearl) and Mulch (red-brown with bronze pearl). Mulch is permanent. It also includes a 275SE brush, Opulash Mascara, and Stubborn Brown (deep rich brown) eyeliner, which is also part of the permanent range.

Dazzle Me is a golden peach with a frosted sheen. It has a frost finish. The color payoff was poor–it was rather sheer–and the texture stiff. theBalm Iron Maid-in is similar. MAC Sweet & Sour is yellower. Dior Couture Gold is more orange. Urban Decay Blunt is similar.

Mulch is a warm medium-dark brown with red undertones and a bronze shimmer. It has a velvet finish. This shade is part of the permanent range, and I’m happy to report that is as lovely to work with in the duo as it is on its own. The pigmentation is excellent, and the texture is soft, finely-milled, and applies smoothly. Urban Decay Deeper is darker. Giorgio Armani #28 is not as warm. Dior Golden Savannah is lighter. MAC Electric Coil is a bit redder.

Stubborn Brown is a dark brown with a matte finish. It had pretty good payoff in a single pass, and it layered well with only two passes. It is similar to Chanel Brun-Teak and MAC Brownborder.

My biggest complaint about the set is actually that the eyeliner and mascara barely fit in the bag! You have to make sure to push the mascara down to the bottom and kind of wiggle in it, then put the pencil on top of that. I just found it odd that it would come with products that don’t fit easily into it (the way it arrives is that the items are in a plastic bag, outside of the vinyl bag). The bag itself is clear vinyl with leopard print and lace print over a bluish-aqua satin.

Dazzle Me just doesn’t work well.  The texture is stiff and difficult to work with, so it doesn’t yield much color.  It really needs to be packed on, and even then, it didn’t appear as it did in the pan.  Mulch is great; if you really like it, you can pick up for $15 in a pot and $12 in a pan.  Though I’ve done the math, the price point of this set seems high.  I think, perhaps, the mascara is not going to be the real draw here, and if you don’t use it, then you lose a lot of value there.  The bag is best for holding lipsticks, glosses, or loose eyeshadows.  It’s fairly small.

The mascara worked well for blackening and lengthening lashes, and I didn’t experience any smudging or flaking during the day. Stubborn wore well for eight hours with very minor fading.
