The Colorful Blush formula is supposed to be long-wearing, buildable, and have a lightweight texture. My experience with the formula has shown that they’re soft, lightly powdery at times (some are worse than others) with semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage that blends fairly well and lasts seven to eight hours. There is some variance between shades, but there are some gems in the range. Jubilant had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color payoff that illuminated the skin with a luminous sheen that didn’t emphasize the skin’s natural texture or enlarge pores. For farier skin tones, this may work as a blushing highlighter, while darker skin tones may see more highlighting and light brightening. The powder had a smooth, soft-to-the-touch consistency that didn’t run powdery or dry, so it was nicely balanced and blended out beautifully. When I tested it for longevity, the blush/highlighter lasted for eight hours on me.

Becca Backlight Primer Filter

Becca Backlight Primer Filter
Becca Backlight Primer Filter

Becca Backlight Primer Filter ($38.00 for 1.0 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a “makeup primer to help blur imperfections and impart a radiant glow.” It’s a sheer, golden beige with a luminous sheen and fine pearl. Burberry Nude Radiance No. 01 (P, $48.00) is warmer, darker (95% similar). Becca Moonstone (P, $41.00) is warmer (95% similar). NARS 413 BLKR (P, $30.00) is warmer, more shimmery (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

I’ve been testing this for a few days under various liquid foundations, and it has worked well with light, medium, and full coverage foundations on my normal-to-dry skin. Even with medium-to-full coverage, the added luminosity of the primer comes through slightly. It can be applied to bare skin for an all-over dewy finish or used under your base of choice. For the photos in the post, I applied it on bare skin and applied a semi-matte finish foundation on top (Guerlain Parure Gold, discontinued) as well as showed it set with loose powder. It extends the wear of my foundation by an hour or so and gives the skin a soft glow while diffusing the skin’s natural texture. I also noticed it helped my foundation spread more smoothly across my face during application. I think the texture of this is thicker, more like a light cream, and less water-like compared to Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfectors, and it does seem to do more for longevity, but the visual effect is more similar. On my skin tone, when I wear it alone over bare skin, it does noticeably lighten my overall complexion by half a shade. There is a moderately strong, soapy perfume-like scent to it when initially applied, but I don’t notice it much during wear.

Tom Ford Moodlight Skin Illuminating Powder Duo

Tom Ford Moodlight Skin Illuminating Powder Duo
Tom Ford Moodlight Skin Illuminating Powder Duo

Tom Ford Moodlight Skin Illuminating Powder Duo ($80.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a limited edition duo of highlighters (I got confirmation yesterday). You can still pre-order from Saks or place a back-order at Nordstrom. If you liked formulas like MAC In Extra Dimension Skinfiishes, Estee Lauder Gelee, or NARS Dual Intensity, you’ll like this one. It has that same baked-gel-powder type of powder. I think this could have been an excellent permanent addition to the Tom Ford range, so I hope the brand will reconsider making this permanent (and also coming out with a few more combinations!). The texture of both shades was incredibly soft, smooth, and finely-milled, while the product provides a noticeable sheen that stops just before it emphasizes the skni’s natural texture.

Moodlight (Daylight) is a soft, pale gold with a luminous sheen. It semi-opaque color coverage that was easily blended out for sheerer coverage or built-up for a more distinct sheen. If you use it wet, you can get a really metallic finish out of it, as well (though note, the brand doesn’t mention damp usage). It wore well for eight and a half hours before I noticed fading. The Estee Edit Snowlit (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). Anastasia Starlight (P, $28.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). LORAC Starlight (P, $23.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). NYX Ritualistic (P, $9.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Becca Moonstone (P, $41.00) is warmer, darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced Rosy Glow (Left) (P) is more shimmery (90% similar). NARS Albatross (P, $29.00) is cooler (90% similar). Becca Moonstone (P, $38.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Double-Gleam (P, $30.00) is darker, more shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Light Cocoa (P) is warmer, less shimmery (85% similar). Giorgio Armani No. 02 (P, $62.00) is darker, more shimmery (85% similar). Estee Lauder Courreges (LE, $32.00) is darker, more shimmery (85% similar). theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer (P, $24.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Camelia de Plumes (LE, $76.00) is cooler, more shimmery (85% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight (P, $44.00) is warmer, darker, less shimmery (85% similar). Becca Moonstone (P, $38.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Moodlight (Candlelight) is a softened, medium rose gold with a metallic sheen. On my skin tone, it leans browner and warmer, but in the pan, it seems a little rosier, so those with pink undertones may find it pulls less brown on them as a result. It was richly pigmented with a very soft, silky consistency that was a tiny bit powdery in the pan, but it didn’t look dry applied to the skin. The finish on this was significantly stronger with respect to sheen compared to the top shade. It didn’t emphasize pores when I applied it, even heavily, though I don’t consider my pores to be huge (personally, someone may disagree with me) so if emphasis of pores is a major concern, you may want to use a more feathery brush (I used a light-to-moderately dense brush) or apply more sheerly. This shade lasted for eight and a half hours on before fading. Anastasia Riviera (P, $28.00) is cooler (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Rose Gold (LE, $46.00) is cooler (90% similar). Estee Lauder Modern Mercury (LE, $65.00) is cooler (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Pink Glow (LE, $46.00) is cooler, lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Cover FX Sunlight (P, $38.00) is warmer (90% similar). Edward Bess Bellissima (P, $45.00) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Naked Flushed Highlighter (-) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Laura Mercier Indiscretion (P, $44.00) is warmer, less shimmery (85% similar). Laura Geller Ballerina (P, $24.00) is warmer, less shimmery (85% similar). Laura Mercier Spellbound (LE, $44.00) is warmer, darker, less shimmery (85% similar). Love Sick leans slightly cooler-toned, but on my warmer skin tone, it looks a lot warmer applied to my face as blush, but I fully expect it to be truer-to-color on those with neutral or cooler undertones. The texture was soft, smooth, fairly blendable while having buildable coverage that went from semi-sheer to mostly opaque with two to three layers. There’s a very subtle sheen to the finish, especially as it is worked into the skin, but it doesn’t look shimmery–more like a natural finish that looks like skin. It wore well for eight and a half hours on my normal-to-dry skin.

Sephora Fiji (25) Colorful Blush

Sephora Fiji (25) Colorful Blush ($15.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a softened, medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a fine, gold shimmer-sheen. Marc Jacobs Beauty Close-Up #3 (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Jolie (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Delicates (LE, $35.50) is darker (95% similar). The Colorful Blush formula is supposed to be long-wearing, buildable, and have a lightweight texture. There is some variance between shades, but there are some gems in the range. As described, Fiji is a buildable shade from semi-sheer to mostly opaque coverage (two to three layers, and it doesn’t look like you’ve over-applied powder) with a soft, very lightly powdery consistency, that is blendable on the skin without emphasizing pores. The shimmer is noticeable but flatters the skin by giving it a lovely sheen. If you like your contour to have some shimmer, it could certainly be used as a contour on some skin tones, but it seems more like a traditional bronzing shade. On me, it wore well for eight hours before fading slightly.

For fall, Guerlain has revamped their powder blush formula, and the new formula is supposed to create a “veil of ultralight texture that’s buildable and easy to apply for a subtle wash of color.” There are six shades available, and this is other of two shades that I received to test (I reviewed Morning Rose yesterday). It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color payoff, so it seemed true-to-description with some buildable coverage, but it was a “wash of color” in one layer. The texture was soft, smooth, and a little dusty, but it sat well on the skin and didn’t look dry. It’s not overtly shimmery, and I’m unable to detect any particles of shimmer, just a delicate sheen. On me, the color wore well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably around the edges. The only thing to keep in mind is that this is designed to be sheerer and buildable, so if you prefer one-pass opacity, this may not be the right formula for your preferences.
