Jouer Skinny Dip Powder Highlighter ($24.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a light-medium, peachy copper with warm undertones and fine pink, gold, and copper pearl. It had a high-shine finish that was very reflective on the skin and was just shy of pore-emphasizing territory. The consistency was incredibly smooth–almost cream-like as it was denser, creamy, forgiving, and blendable but never kicked up excess powder in the pan. The highlighter wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading.

Birthday Cake

ColourPop Birthday Cake Super Shock Shadow ($5.00) is a medium-dark, rosy copper with subtle, warm undertones and flecks of pink and copper sparkle. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which was buildable to opaque coverage with two layers. The consistency was lightly creamy, emollient without being too slippery, and noticeably sparkly, so it did not feel quite as smooth as other Super Shock Shadows have in the past (but not in a dry way). It applied well on the lid and lasted for ten hours with minor fallout.

This eyeshadow is not available for purchase; it is a free gift with purchase on all ColourPop orders of $10 or more in celebration of their 3rd anniversary.

Skywalk

Urban Decay Skywalk Naked Skin Highlighting Fluid ($28.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a sheer, bluish white with fine, iridescent pearl. As described, it was sheer and only buildable to semi-sheer coverage and the key was to let the initial layer dry down before adding any more on top. The consistency was thin, more water-like, and fluid over the skin. I was able to pat it over my cheeks and blend out with my fingertips on bare skin as well as over liquid foundation, but I did have to be careful not to disturb any powder products I layered it over due to the wateriness of the formula. On its own, the highlighter lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

The Naked Skin Highlighting Fluid is supposed to be a “sheer, weightless formula” that gives skin a “dewy, lit-from-within look.” I think one of the key takeaways from the brand’s description is that it is “sheer,” “subtle,” and “never overdone” — it is a subtle highlighter, and they tend to look more similar than not applied (at least, on me). They had sheer to medium, buildable coverage with a very fluid, thin texture (not quite watery) and were blendable on the skin, whether bare or over liquid foundations. If I was too vigorous blending out the product, it did cause some separation of my base products if I had powder on top, but it was fine with gentle blending (fingertips or stippling brush). The formula dried down and wasn’t tacky on the skin, and they lasted between seven and a half and eight hours on me. You can view swatches all of the full line here.

The brand posted some video demos that included using it alone as well as mixed with foundation. I think that the smaller amount is less conducive to regular mixing with base products but is a sufficient amount for a spot highlighter. If you wanted something more for mixing, similar products with similar subtly often contain at least 0.50 fl. oz., if not more.

Island

Bobbi Brown Island Glow Stick ($36.00 for 0.31 oz.) is medium, golden bronze with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had a dewy finish on the skin, as the formula never dried down. While the finish was always luminous, it had terrible wear–on its own, it had slid around noticeably on my skin after four hours of wear. When I tried it over my liquid foundation, it moved my base around a ton and created a lot of patchiness within two hours of wear. It had sheer coverage, and the pearl in this particular shade made it look spectacular but just required so much maintenance, care, and touch-ups.

It’s supposed to be a “creamy, lightweight highlighter” with “sheer” coverage that gives “an instant, sun-kissed glow that lasts all day.” The formula was very emollient with a lot of slip and wetness; it never dried down and always felt slick on the skin. All of the shades I tried were sheer, and they were not buildable, so several shades ended up looking very similar on my skin tone (but may look more or less different on other skin tones/undertones). The emollient feel of the formula did not play well with products (primers, cream/powder/liquid foundations or blushes).

Milani Sunglow Strobelight Instant Glow Powder ($10.00 for 0.30 oz.) is a light-medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation–just shy of full coverage–that was buildable to full coverage by patting on just a touch more product. The texture was smooth to the touch, soft and blendable without being powdery in the pan, and sat well on the skin except when worn at full coverage, then it emphasized my skin’s texture ever-so-slightly. On my skin, the highlighter wore well for eight hours before fading.

The formula is powder highlighter that’s supposed to have a “radiant finish” and is available in seven shades (you can view swatches of all shades here). The consistency was similar to a lot of other “gelee” highlighters: smooth, soft but more firmly pressed (where there was no powderiness but was still pigmented) with semi-opaque to opaque coverage and a frosted to a metallic finish. Some shades emphasized my skin’s natural texture slightly when worn heavily. This formula will be most suitable for someone who likes an intense, more metallic highlighter and warmer-toned shades.

Medium Light

Chanel Medium Light Les Beiges Healthy Glow Luminous Colour ($58.00 for 0.42oz.) is a light-medium, yellowed peach with a satin sheen. The pigmentation was buildable from semi-sheer to medium coverage (three layers). The texture was very silky and finely-milled, but it was also powdery and kicked up a fair amount of powder in the pan. This also led to it being harder to apply on drier skin (like my arm) as the product did not adhere that well; it was less of a concern over my cheeks (more normal) nor when applied over freshly applied liquid foundation. I could see this shade working as a bronzer on lighter complexions, as only a faint sheen showed on my light-medium skin tone (easier for me to see it in person than in photos), but it could be used as a highlighting powder on light and light-medium, warmer skin tones without adding much color (if any!). The product wore well for eight hours on me.

Chanel described the formula as a “powder bronze and highlighter enriched with illuminating pigments” with a “buildable, soft texture.” The brand noted to select a shade lighter than your skin tone for highlighting and darker than your skin tone for bronzing–so it was less of a multi-tasking product and more that one could use it either as a highlighting powder or as a bronzing powder. I think you can get a little illumination and subtle warmth if you choose a shade similar to your skin tone, though, which is the closest to having the best of both worlds.

You can view photos of the packaging and ingredients here, along with swatches of the full range here.
