I wish I could adequately convey what an utter disappointment this product was. Long-time readers will know that I have a deep love for Tom Ford’s Cheek Colors, and this product is nothing like that; not in a single aspect, and it is one of the worst Tom Ford products I have ever tested myself. The texture was stiff, firmly packed into the pan and yielded little to no color coverage. I had to scrape off layers to be able to provide you with a semblance of color for the swatch. They might advocate using their “specially designed applicator,” but it is useless–it doesn’t improve results one bit–and gathers color on the bristles but translates almost none onto the skin. The product is difficult to blend as it doesn’t apply evenly, and there is little color to work with. It took five layers to build-up enough color to have it photograph. It was noticeably faded after seven hours of wear on cheeks. On eyes, the color had faded after five hours of wear.

It’s a new, limited edition blush in the MAC MACnificent collection, which launches at counters and stores on October 1st. It had good color payoff, and it is very pigmented–it is more pigmented in practice than it appears swatched, even. I felt like a little went a long way, and I had to be careful not to get too much on the brush to avoid over-applying! I would recommend a feathery brush and/or a fan brush if you prefer subtler coverage. The texture was a little dry, almost powdery but not the so-silky-it’s-powdery texture, but I was surprised that it blended quite nicely on the skin with just a brush (but no tricks!). The finish has a slight sheen to it, which gives it a natural look on the skin but isn’t overtly shimmery. On me, the blush lasted for eight and a half hours.

MAC Swiss Chocolate Blush

MAC Swiss Chocolate Blush

MAC Swiss Chocolate Blush ($17.00 for 0.21 oz. pan-only) is described as a “soft cocoa [with a Matte finish].” It’s a medium-dark brown with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. MAC Naturally Enhanced (LE, $33.00) is more muted, cooler (90% similar). MAC Raizin (P, $22.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Duo N. 01 (Bottom) (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). By Terry Savannah Love #6 (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). NARS Melina (Contour) (P, ) is darker, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC’s Powder Blush formula is supposed to be easy to apply, long-wearing, and have “fantastic colour.” It’s hard to generalize for MAC’s blush formula, because it varies a lot from shade to shade, even within different types of finishes! Some of them are very good, others are so-so, and a few are complete misses. The more frosted/shimmery shades tend to have the softest and smoothest textures and are easier to apply and blend out on the skin, while more satin and matte shades can sometimes be powdery, firm, or stiff, which makes blending more challenging. The wear is typically between six and nine hours but closer to seven to eight hours on average. Swiss Chocolate had good pigmentation, though not fully opaque unless layered, with a slightly dry, noticeably powder consistency that did make it a bit harder to work with. A lot of the color gets on the brush but seems to disperse in a wider arc than intended, so I would recommend using a denser, more tapered blush brush and tapping excess off, prior to applying to the skin. It blended out decently, but there was a slight unevenness to it overall. The blush lasted for eight hours on me before I noticed fading. It’s nowhere near as silky as the eyeshadow by the same name.

Sketch is one of the hardest blushes to blend out that I’ve ever encountered: it does not want to diffuse, even out, or otherwise look half-decent on the skin. Perhaps it is due to the incredibly dry, powdery consistency that drags across the skin’s surface and has that patchy, uneven coverage even as a swatch that results in an absolutely disastrous application. It seems quite pigmented, but it just doesn’t seem to go on well–even when I tried it over primer and with various brushes, I really couldn’t get decent results at all. The mess that I did make, however, seemed to wear for eight hours, so there’s that.

NYX Rose Gold & Intuition HD Blushes

NYX Rose Gold HD Blush
NYX Rose Gold HD Blush

NYX Rose Gold HD Blush ($6.50 for 0.16 oz.) is a brightened, medium orange-coral with warm, reddish undertones and a strong, golden frost. It had semi-opaque coverage that was buildable to mostly true-to-pan color. The texture was silky to the touch, which made it easy to blend and work into the skin, and the fineness of the powder helped it adhere smoothly. The only downside is that it is a little powdery and kicks up excess in the pan, but luckily, that powderiness doesn’t translate on the skin. This shade wore for seven and a half hours on me. Makeup Geek Romance (DC, $9.99) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Haute Contour (Blush) (LE, ) is less pigmented, cooler (90% similar). MAC Just a Pinch (P, $27.00) is cooler (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Love Lust (P, $60.00) is cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Fireball (P, $30.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced Sparkling Bellini (P, $30.00) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). NARS Vu (LE, ) is cooler (90% similar). Milani Corallina (P, $8.00) is darker (90% similar). Anastasia Kitty Kat (LE, ) is more shimmery, cooler (85% similar). MAC Style Cast (LE, $22.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Zoeva Palace Door (P, ) is lighter (85% similar). Too Faced Luminous Peach (LE, ) is lighter, brighter, warmer (85% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Siena (P, $58.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). NYX Menage a Trois (P, $15.00) is darker (85% similar). Urban Decay Fireball (P, $26.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NYX Intuition HD Blush ($6.50 for 0.16 oz.) is a medium, rosy plum with warm undertones and a frosted finish. This blush has an incredibly soft, finely-milled consistency… that gets everywhere, because it is so powdery that is easy to get far more product than you need on the brush and onto your face (it also wastes some!). You need a really, really light touch and just lightly pat the surface of the blush with your brush to minimize the mess. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a more heavily frosted finish, though it didn’t emphasize pores once it is blended out. I noticed fading with this one after seven hours. Stellar Beauty Flare (P, $25.00) is lighter (95% similar). Laura Geller Fruit Punch (P, $28.00) is cooler (95% similar). Becca Rose Spritz (LE, $34.00) is more shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Pearlescent Pink (P, $2.99) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Peachy Keen (LE, ) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). theBalm Hot Mama (P, $21.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Sweet Vision (LE, $28.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). YSL Passionnee (6) (P, $47.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Colour Pop Kelp Me (LE, $5.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Laura Geller Tropic Hues (P, $28.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Star Wonder (LE, $33.00) is darker (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Santa Barbara (P, $38.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Peony (LE, $26.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Springsheen (P, $22.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Benefit GALifornia (P, $29.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA SUMMARY | NYX’s newest blush formula is supposed to be a “high definition, lightweight blush that blends evenly” that is “vibrant and silky.” The texture tended to be on the more powdery side, but it sits well and doesn’t look powdery applied. Many shades have a more luminous finish to them where the shimmer is fine enough to create a glow, rather than a frosted finish (though a couple are quite shimmery). The formula blends fairly easily on the skin and has medium, buildable coverage with some being very pigmented right off the bat. The wear time is between seven and eight hours.
