MAC x Ellie Goulding Halcyon Nights Palette

MAC Halcyon Nights Face Kit
MAC Halcyon Nights Face Kit

MAC Halcyon Nights Face Kit ($44.00 for 0.36 oz.) includes four powder eyeshadows and one Cream Colour Base (cream product), with the cream product housed underneath the powders, so you shouldn’t get too much cross-contamination from the powders. I liked it overall, though it is, of course, more dupable given it is a set of neutral shades. I think it would be an easier to sell if it was a quad of powder eyeshadows (it would also be more streamlined, as it wouldn’t have a second level to it) with the Cream Colour Base sold separately. It is priced pretty similarly to most limited edition, specially-packaged eyeshadow quads (which contain the same amount of powder product), so it’s almost like getting the CCB for free.

This Love is described as a “pinky orange-pearl.” It’s a light-medium, peachy copper with warm undertones and a pearly shimmer-sheen finish. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque, buildable coverage with a thin, lightly emollient consistency (I want to say greasy, but it’s not truly greasy!) that glides over the skin well and gives it a dewy finish. As a highlighter, it lasted for seven and a half hours (marketed for eight-hour wear, so not bad). Colour Pop Highly Waisted (P, $8.00) is lighter (90% similar). Chanel Tisse Ombre de Lune #3 (P, ) is lighter (90% similar). Smashbox Shimmer (LE, ) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Highlighter (LE, $33.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). bareMinerals The Brilliant Sunset (LE, $26.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Summer Opal (LE, $22.00) is darker (90% similar). Sephora Secretive (19) (P, $14.00) is darker (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Norman Parkinson (LE, $32.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Starry Eyed is described as a “cream high pearl [with a Frost finish].” It’s a sparkling, light white with warm undertones and a glittery finish. It appears darker and more peach-like in the pan, but it is much lighter and whiter when I swatched it, which may have been due to the drier, flakier texture where little powder came off but lots of sparkle did. It was a messy one to apply, and I think it would be best over a tacky base. I actually thought it was a Lustre when I tested it, and I was surprised to see it was a Frost. Urban Decay Polyester Bride (P, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Stila Snowflake (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Too Faced Jingle All the Way Eyeshadow #2 (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Colour Pop Alchemy (LE, $5.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek I'm Peachless (P, $6.00) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

You My Everything is described as a “mid-tone peachy brown [with a Matte finish].” It’s a muted, medium coral with warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was smooth and finely-milled with decent to good pigmentation, but I had some issues with it sticking to bare skin, though it should be fine over a primer–it’s probably a wee bit too dry to get along with bare skin (which is normal-to-dry). It lasted for seven hours on me. LORAC Hot Toddy (LE, $19.00) is cooler (90% similar). LORAC Nectar (P, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Makeup Geek Tuscan Sun (P, $6.00) is darker (90% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Lantana (LE, ) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Tarte Sweetheart (P, ) is lighter (85% similar). Inglot #341 (P, $6.00) is lighter (85% similar). Kat Von D Placebo (LE, ) is darker, brighter, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Saddle is described as a “golden orange brown [with a Matte finish].” It’s a medium-dark brown with warm, yellow-orange undertones and a matte finish. It had an incredibly smooth, finely-milled, and silky consistency that applied well and blended out beautifully. This shade is part of MAC’s permanent range, so if it’s the only shade that catches your eye, you can purchase it individually. It wore well for eight hours on me. Makeup Geek Tan Lines (P, $6.00) is brighter (90% similar). Buxom Filthy Rich (P, $12.00) is darker (90% similar). Zoeva Substitute for Love (P, ) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Too Faced Chocolate Cookie (P, $16.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Wet 'n' Wild To Muse and Carouse #2 (LE, $2.29) is darker (90% similar). Becca Ombre Rouge #4 (P, ) is lighter, more muted, less pigmented (85% similar). LORAC Unspoken (P, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Anastasia Bengal (P, $12.00) is lighter (85% similar). LORAC Walnut (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Exposed (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, more muted (85% similar). MAC Uninterrupted (DC, $21.00) is warmer (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Hanging On is described as a “muted plum-brown [with a Satin finish].” It’s a dark, taupe brown with subtle, warmer undertones but a more pronounced gray tone on top paired with a satiny sheen. It had good pigmentation with a slightly firmer consistency, but it was blendable and easy enough to apply onto the lid. This shade wore for eight hours before fading. LORAC Black #5 (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Lancome Audacious (P, $19.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Colour Pop Fairfax (LE, $5.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC x Ellie Goulding Halcyon Days Palette

MAC Halcyon Days Face Kit
MAC Halcyon Days Face Kit

MAC Halcyon Days Face Kit ($44.00 for 0.45 oz.) includes four Cream Colour Bases and one Blot Powder/Pressed. I am totally baffled by the inclusion of the Blot Powder, given that it is in shade “Medium Dark,” which will obviously not suit many skin tones. Why not a powder highlighter instead? Two of the Cream Colour Bases (Tint and Root) are part of the permanent range. If you’re unfamiliar with the Cream Colour Base formula, it’s pretty much a versatile cream-based product that can be sheer, buildable, creamy, or shimmery and can be used on the eyes, lips, or face (some shades have restricted usages). They can be used alone or over products (including powder) and are supposed to last for eight hours on face and body (with “lasting wear for hours on eyes”).

Medium Dark is a light-medium beige with a matte finish. It is similar to the color of my forearm, but it is lighter than face. The product itself is really, really chalky and looks powdery on my normal-to-dry skin. I’m not oily, so it was hard to determine if it was really helping combat that, but it seemed to extend the wear of my base by an hour or two.

Wished I Stayed is described as a “light cream pearl.” It’s a golden beige with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had semi-sheer, buildable coverage with a lightweight, creamy consistency that glided on and blended out well. As a cheek highlighter, it lasted for seven hours on me. Stila Sending My Love Highlighter (LE, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Smashbox Shimmer (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Becca Opal (P, $41.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Becca Opal (P, $38.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). NARS Hot Sand (P, $30.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Natasha Denona Moonstone (59M) (P, $29.00) is warmer (85% similar). MAC Highlighter (LE, $33.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). bareMinerals The Brilliant Sunset (LE, $26.00) is less shimmery, lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tint is described as a “soft peachy brown with shimmer.” It’s a muted, medium brown with warm, rosy undertones and a soft pearl shimmer. It had semi-opaque to opaque coverage, though the creamy, emollient consistency makes it easy to apply less or really diffuse it for sheerer coverage. The color lasted for seven and a half hours as a blush. LORAC Pink Bronze (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Chanel Accent (84) (LE, $45.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (90% similar). Chanel Golden Sun (280) (P, $45.00) is lighter, cooler, less glossy (90% similar). MAC Love Joy (P, $27.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Every Time You Go is described as a “creamy peachy pink.” It’s a light-medium pink with warm undertones and a creamy finish. It had semi-sheer to opaque pigmentation with a creamy, light-medium thick consistency–thicker than the other two–and has no shimmer. It blended out well on the skin and wore for seven and a half hours as a blush. Guerlain Ors et Merveilles #7 (LE, ) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). Gucci Beauty Coral Flower (P, $49.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). Chanel Angelique (190) (P, $45.00) is warmer, less glossy (90% similar). Colour Pop Holiday (P, $8.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Make Up For Ever #215 HD Blush (P, $26.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Stardust (LE, ) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). NYX Apricot (P, $5.00) is less glossy (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Root is described as a “red taupey brown with shimmer.” It’s a dark, taupe brown with strong, gray shimmer with a warmer undertone. The more opaque it is applied, the grayer it appears, but the more it is sheered out, the browner it looks. It had semi-sheer to opaque pigmentation with a lightweight, emollient texture that glided and blended well on the skin without becoming patchy. This shade lasted for seven and a half hours on my cheeks. MAC Pressed Amber (LE, $27.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Notorious (LE, $45.00) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC x Ellie Goulding I’ll Hold My Breath Blush Duo

MAC I'll Hold My Breath Blush Duo
MAC I’ll Hold My Breath Blush Duo

MAC I’ll Hold My Breath Blush Duo ($28.00 for 0.35 oz.) consists of a brown and pink, with the brown taking up about two-thirds of the space in the pan. Not bad, not out of this world. I wish they would have just kept it as true duo–half of each–as I think it would be more versatile that way. They are more dupable, particularly the coral (even within MAC’s range). It is a larger compact, and it’s nice to see that they put together special packaging for the collection.

I’ll Hold My Breath #1 is described as a “medium warm bronze.” It’s a medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a dusting of gold shimmer. The texture was really smooth, but there was a firmness to it that made it a little harder to get the product to transfer onto a brush, even though it didn’t feel hard/stiff to the touch. It had semi-opaque pigmentation at best, but it was blendable on the skin and applied evenly overall. On me, the color lasted for eight hours before fading. Colour Pop Paradise Cove (P, $8.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). MAC Ganymede (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). IT Cosmetics Warm Radiance (P, $34.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (95% similar). Colour Pop Glo Up (LE, $8.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Colour Pop Poolside (P, $8.00) is darker (90% similar). By Terry Tan & Flash Cruise #5 (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Laura Mercier Seduction (P, $44.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Zoeva ND030 (P, ) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). NARS Casino (P, $36.00) is darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Paranoid (P, $26.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). By Terry Light & Tan Vibes #6 (LE, ) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Refined Golden (P, $27.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). By Terry Savannah Love #2 (LE, ) is lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

I’ll Hold My Breath #2 is described as a “peachy pink pearl.” It’s a light-medium, pinky-coral with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had decent pigmentation with a smooth consistency that was a little dry, but it applied without issue and blended out nicely. The color started to fade after eight hours on me. MAC Spring Flock (LE, $22.00) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Chanel Sunkiss Ribbon (LE, $70.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Tarte Concept (LE, $28.00) is warmer (95% similar). Too Faced Stardust (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (95% similar). KIKO 108 Orange Coral (DC, $12.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Milani Coral Beams #3 (P, ) is warmer (95% similar). Hourglass Luminous Flush (P, $35.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). NARS Blasphemy (LE, $30.00)(95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Lines & Last Night (502) (P, $42.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). NYX Deep Plum HD Blush ($6.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark rosy copper with warm undertones and a satin finish. NARS Lovejoy (P, $30.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). NYX Bronzed (P, $6.50) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

It’s an interesting shade, as it takes on a more plum-like colorinmg when applied heavily, but as it is blended and sheered out, the warmer, coppery tones come through. The finish also becomes more luminous the more the powder is buffed into the skin, but it is never too much so it doesn’t emphasize pores or the skin’s natural texture. It was nicely pigmented with a lightly dusty consistency, but it was very soft and easily blended on the skin. This shade wore well for eight hours on me before fading.

FORMULA SUMMARY | NYX’s newest blush formula is supposed to be a “high definition, lightweight blush that blends evenly” that is “vibrant and silky.” The texture tended to be on the more powdery side, but it sits well and doesn’t look powdery applied. Many shades have a more luminous finish to them where the shimmer is fine enough to create a glow, rather than a frosted finish (though a couple are quite shimmery). The formula blends fairly easily on the skin and has medium, buildable coverage with some being very pigmented right off the bat. The wear time is between seven and eight hours.

MAC Heavenly (LE, $22.00) is less shimmery, glossier (95% similar). Colour Pop Pegacorn (DC, $8.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). LORAC Vivid (P, $23.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). It’s so nice when you find a budget-friendly product that really performs well! That is the case with Electro. It was richly pigmented paired with a soft, smooth consistency that was easily blended out along the edges for a diffused application. If you prefer subtler blush, I’d recommend using a fan brush or duo-fiber brush, which will allow you to apply less product, and a lighter hand, as a little does go a long way. On me, the blush wore well for eight hours before fading along the edges.

This was one of the more shimmery shades in the HD Blush round-up that I’ve tried so far. It’s definitely not frosted, though, and it has a very luminous sheen on the skin as the shimmer is fine. The blush was richly pigmented with a soft, silky texture that applied well to the skin and blended out with ease. It was just a smidgen powdery, but it was so much better than a lot of the other shades in the range! When I tested it, the color stayed on well for eight hours before fading.
