OCC Dekadent Lip Tar Stained Gloss
OCC Dekadent Lip Tar Stained Gloss

OCC Dekadent Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “translucent crushed blueberry.” It’s a pink-tinged violet–much like what you’d see if you did in fact crush blueberries. On my lips, this translated to a cool-toned, medium-dark pink color with a subtly glossy finish. It has a thinner texture than the average gloss, but it’s not too thin. It’s non-sticky and a little gel-like on. This shade wore for well for four hours, but it didn’t have any real, long-lasting stain. Unlike other shades in the Lip Tar Stained Gloss range, this one is very sheer (just as described), so depending on what you’re looking for, this may be more or less your style than the rest of the range. This type of sheerness always seems to leave my lips looking somewhat splotchy and uneven. Revlon Sugar Violet is sheerer. Bobbi Brown Electric Violet has shimmer. See comparison swatches.

Mein Herr Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “creme fraiche beige.” It’s a light, peachy-beige with subtle warm undertones. It had semi-opaque color coverage, but this shade settled into every lip line. From afar, it isn’t as noticeable, because the color is more opaque than not and glossy, but it’s there and I wish that it wasn’t. This is an issue that tends to happen with paler beige glosses. It lasted four hours. MAC Calypso Beat is pinker. Chanel Zephyr is shimmery. MAC Liquid Passion is similar. NARS Buenos Aires is shimmery, less warm-toned. MAC Ready or Not is more opaque. MAC Peachstock is similar. MAC Fashion Whim is also similar. See comparison swatches.

Both shades will be available at Sephora on August 27th.

OCC Fragmented Metallic Lip Tar
OCC Fragmented Metallic Lip Tar

OCC Fragmented Metallic Lip Tar ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “metallic acid green shade.” It’s a brightened, chartreuse green with gold and lime shimmer and a metallic finish. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but I don’t know of any other lip color like this–the best I could suggest would be to take a loose eyeshadow or crumble up a pressed one in a chartreuse hue and pat onto lips. You could add a little gloss to help it mix together.  MAC Spring Bean is somewhat similar, but it is a gloss and is sheer.

The sheerness of this may make it more “wearable” for more people, and according to OCC, it’s supposed to have a glaze finish to be in line that’s almost gauzy–so it’s not designed to be opaque.  The consistency had more slip than other Metallic Lip Tars, and it felt a bit like the Stained Gloss Lip Tars but with a metallic finish because of the glossier, higher slip feel. I applied two thin layers to get semi-sheer color that was still even; more than that, and it started to look uneven and noticeable color settled into lip lines.  Fragmented lasted for five hours when I wore it.

It will be available at Comic Con in San Diego, but it will make its full debut in August at Sephora and OCC.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics makes their long-awaited debut at San Diego Comic-Con (July 18-21, 2013) in a collaboration with artist Gail Potocki.

To commemorate their arrival into Comic-Con, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics has worked with renowned Symbolist painter Gail Potocki to launch a limited edition metallic Lip Tar that is inspired by her latest series of paintings, “Fragmented Alice” — a uniquely macabre take on Alice in Wonderland. The exclusive Lip Tar in ‘Fragmented’ is a metallic acid green shade that boasts an unprecedented amount of metallic pigment, leaving a spectacularly foil-like finish on the lips that’s unquestionably attention-getting. San Diego Comic-Con is the perfect platform to launch this collaboration as it has become the largest pop-culture event in the world and features not only comics but all aspects of popular arts. Attendees of San Diego Comic-Con can be the first to pick up ‘Fragmented’ Lip Tar: Metallic at the Century Guild booth (#2845) beginning on Preview Night, July 17th.

But that’s not all! ‘Fragmented’ Lip Tar: Metallic is a preview of what’s to come next from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. Stay tuned for more announcements coming soon on the full “Fragmented Alice” limited-edition collection, set to launch August 2013.

I tried to pull a good variety in blues, from cobalt, purplish blues to sky blues to your bold, bright blues–and not just eyeshadows! I had to pick an eyeliner, because it’s a great way to add a bold pop of color without going full-on blue. If you want to see my picks together, the comparisons.

  1. Sephora My Boyfriend’s Jeans — a pop of cobalt blue for the lash line
  2. OCC Pond — Tardis blue for your nails
  3. Le Metier de Beaute Lapis — a beautiful, medium-dark blue with shimmer
  4. Color Club Over the Moon — a shimmering, holographic blue
  5. Inglot #426 — a brightened, medium blue

What’s your favorite blue-hued beauty product?

OCC Lovecraft Metallic Lip Tar
OCC Lovecraft Metallic Lip Tar

OCC Lovecraft Metallic Lip Tar ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as an “iridescent pink/lilac metallic.” It’s a brightened, light-medium, blue-based pink with a metallic finish. Maybelline Pink Pop is warmer, not metallic. MAC Pink Nouveau is similar in color but doesn’t have a metallic finish. MAC Outrageously Fun is close in color but lacks the metallic finish. MAC Naughty Saute is lighter, not metallic. OCC Narcissus is similar in color but a matte finish. See comparison swatches.

Lovecraft is very, very, very metallic. As a result, it’s a little gritty, and it’s on the whole, somewhat drying, even if it wears well and lasts six and a half hours. It just wasn’t comfortable to wear, and the high metallic finish made it look chunky/gritty applied. It was quite pigmented, though, and maybe mixed with a little gloss, it would be easier on the lips, both in terms of application as well as for how it feels when worn.
