When I think about a go-to color for a bold, party look, I always think red. I’m curious to know what your go-to color is when you think about it! There aren’t nearly as many shimmery/metallic reds as there should be, in my opinion, that are permanently available. I’d love to hear about more that I’m missing out on!

  2. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Role Play — A Warm Red with a Frost finish.
  3. NARS Christina — A Warm Red with a Frost finish.
  4. Milani Cherry Crave — A Warm Red with a Metallic finish.
  5. Hourglass Siren — A Warm Red with a Metallic finish.

OCC Mosh & Stud Lip Tar/RTW

OCC Mosh Lip Tar/RTW
OCC Mosh Lip Tar/RTW

OCC Mosh Lip Tar/RTW ($15.00 for 0.14 fl. oz.) is described as a “brick burgundy metallic.” It’s a deep, reddish burgundy with fine copper/gold shimmer and a natural sheen. It was richly pigmented with a light-medium weight consistency that had some slip, which I found caused feathering after four hours of wear (though the color itself was still going strong after six hours). I was impressed at how even it applied, as darker shades (especially when liquid or slippery) tend to apply poorly. It was neither drying nor hydrating. Too Faced Chocolate Cherries (P, $21.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Makeup Geek Acoustic (P, $15.00) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Tribalist (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery, lighter, brighter (85% similar). Makeup Geek Mixtape (P, $15.00) is cooler (85% similar). Bite Beauty Truffle (P, $24.00) is less shimmery, lighter, brighter (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Black Metal Dahlia (P, $18.00) is lighter, brighter, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

OCC Stud Lip Tar/RTW ($15.00 for 0.14 fl. oz.) is described as a “greyed aubergine matte.” It’s a dark, muted purple with a cream finish. It had opaque color coverage with a light-medium-weight consistency–it was one of the thicker shades on the collection–that applied smoothly and evenly. The color was still going strong after six hours of wear, and the formula was a little drying after seven hours of wear. Too Faced Melted Villain (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Colour Pop Guess (LE, $6.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). Illamasqua Kontrol (P, $24.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Gunner (LE, $17.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Colour Pop Feminist (DC, $5.00) is darker, less glossy (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pagan (P, $18.00) is more shimmery, darker, less glossy (85% similar). Bite Beauty Black Truffle (P, $26.00) is darker, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA SUMMARY | OCC Lip Tar/RTW ($15.00 for 0.14 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a long-wearing, pigmented liquid lipstick. The formula is light-to-medium in weight with some shades with a thinner or thicker consistency. As you might expect, the thinner ones tend to have sheerer coverage, though the average Lip Tar is semi-opaque to intensely opaque (like the smallest amount is needed to get opaque coverage). The Metallic shades tend to be thinner and have more slip compared to the cream ones. The formula is sometimes drying, sometimes just not drying. The formula is mint-scented but has no discernible taste. The new Lip Tar/RTW comes with a doe-foot applicator, which makes it easier to apply from the tube than the original Lip Tars.

OCC Synth & Structure Lip Tar/RTW

OCC Synth Lip Tar/RTW
OCC Synth Lip Tar/RTW

OCC Synth Lip Tar/RTW ($15.00 for 0.14 fl. oz.) is described as a “true rose gold metallic.” It’s a brightened, medium rosy copper with warm undertones and a metallic shimmer-sheen finish. It had good pigmentation, though there was slight translucency so the natural lip color came through just barely. The texture was thinner and little more liquidy, but it didn’t seem to interfere with application, which was still quite even. It wore well for five hours on me, and it was a little drying after four hours of wear. Tom Ford Beauty Pink Dune (02) (LE, $50.00) is less pigmented (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Luca (LE, $35.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Surratt Beauty Lili Doree (P, $36.00) is less shimmery, lighter, glossier (90% similar). shu uemura OB Dream Orange (LE, $30.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Too Faced Metallic Debutante (P, $21.00) is brighter, cooler (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Calypso Shimmer (10) (P, $26.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Sunset Beach (LE, $23.00) is darker (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Skinny Dip (P, $50.00) is lighter, less pigmented (85% similar). Chanel Teheran (412) (P, $37.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Demsey (DC, $35.00) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). Chanel Sari Dore (DC, $34.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Chanel Sari Dore (414) (P, $37.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

OCC Structure Lip Tar/RTW ($15.00 for 0.14 fl. oz.) is described as a “concrete grey beige.” It’s a muted, light-medium beige with hints of pink and a cream finish. I see the gray cast to it, which gives this muted, neutral vibe (though I’d still say it is a warmer shade overall!). It had rich color payoff with a smooth, even application. It applied well, lasted for five and a half hours, and was neither drying nor hydrating. NYX Stone (P, $6.00) is darker (95% similar). Colour Pop Choker (LE, $5.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Peachstock (P, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). NYX Mirage (P, $6.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Luxe Natural (P, $23.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Maybelline Nude Lust (920) (P, $7.49) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Zenith (LE, $30.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty Retsina (P, $24.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Colour Pop Oh Snap (LE, $5.00) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

OCC Derelict & Disintegration Lip Tar/RTW

OCC Derelict Lip Tar/RTW
OCC Derelict Lip Tar/RTW

OCC Derelict Lip Tar/RTW ($15.00 for 0.14 fl. oz.) is described as a “patinated olive gold metallic.” It’s a smoky, dirty olive green with warmer, light-medium olive gold shimmer. It’s not a duochrome, but it almost appears that way, because of how the shimmer sits in the base and catches the light. It is much cooler in person, I think. It had smei-opaque coverage and applied unevenly, which was my biggest gripe with it. I think this one would benefit from applying with a lip brush, blotting lightly, and then applying a second layer for fuller coverage. The color wore well for six and a half hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. NYX Trickery (P, $6.00) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

OCC Disintegration Lip Tar/RTW ($15.00 for 0.14 fl. oz.) is described as a “pale, plum lavender metallic.” It’s a light-medium, muted lavender with neutral-to-cool undertones and a fine pearl sheen. It had mostly opaque color payoff that applied with smooth, even coverage with little fuss. The color wore well for five and a half hours on me, and it was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Ionized (LE, $23.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). MAC Double Spin (LE, $17.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Mlle (LE, $17.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Restrict (LE, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Beauty (LE, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). Maybelline Bubblegum Bloom (965) (LE, $7.49) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). MAC Weekend 1 (LE, $17.00) is lighter (85% similar). MAC You're Perfect Already (LE, $18.00) is darker (85% similar). MAC Notice Me (LE, $17.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier (80% similar). Kat Von D Requiem (P, $20.00) is darker, less glossy (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
