New Year’s Eve Makeup Ideas

New Year’s Eve Makeup Ideas

Dramatic & Bold Smoky Eye: If you love something ultra smoky with lots of black, false lashes, and smoldering, this all-black smoky eye may be your cup of tea.

Smoky Grays: Silvers and grays are what I identify the “original” smoky eye with — this is just one take on the traditional smoky eye. Pair it with a lighter lip to keep all the attention on the eyes.

Festive Gold & Cranberry: Great for a brighter, more colorful look with still a little smoky cranberry edge. I always associate gold and red with the holiday season (both for Christmas and NYE, actually), so I love variations on this theme for eyeshadow, too.

Neutral with a Kick: I love neutrals — I love barely there shades that really flatter peepers, like this soft, brighter beige kind of look. This look is also perfect for pairing with bolder lips!

Cream/Gel Eyeliner: The Best of the Best

Cream/Gel Eyeliner Breakdown

Cream/gel eyeliners are usually thick creams (the consistency of a cream, but the thickness of more like a paste… or a lipstick, for a better beauty reference!). They usually require a brush to apply it, and most use these on the upper lash line (they can be irritating on the lower lash line, particularly for those with more sensitive eyes). They’re a very, very popular item with numerous brands having their own take on the cream/gel eyeliner product type.

At the end of the day, they’re all quality cream/gel eyeliners and none are not worth paying for. As with many cosmetic products, some will work better on others–we’re not all going to fall in love with the same formula–but I do think these are all good picks. Personally, I tend to choose by the color/shade rather than the brand! If I had to give you a top three (in alphabetical order), they would be: Bobbi Brown, MAC, and shu uemura.

Here’s a comparison across eight different brands and their cream/gel eyeliners… Keep Reading!

Holiday Makeup Ideas, Part IV

Holiday Makeup Ideas, Part IV

Gilded gold and forest green is always a good pairing, but it’s also completely festive! The rich evergreen in the pine trees… totally something key to winter/holidays.

Emerald green and gold is a bolder, brighter take on the green and gold pairing for the winter and holiday seasons. This is probably one of my all-time favorite looks that I’ve done!

Classic smoky eyes are never a bad way to go when you have a party or special occasion to attend!  You can always add your own twist by making it bluer, grayer, smokier… whatever!  I like to pair it with a golden-glossed nude lip.

Smoky golden browns can also be the focal point of your holiday look, rather than the lips. Black eyeliner paired with a pop of gilded gold liner really brought this look together for me.

Less can definitely be more when you want to wear your favorite bright holiday red lipstick/gloss! One of my favorite ways to wear bold lips is by simply wearing a little colored liner (gold is always a go-to for me) on the lower lash line, lots of mascara, and that’s about it!

Ultra black smoky eye with an icy twist is a great way to go wintry without being subtle. The usage of both Vex and Pink Opal pigment really give it that ice princess feel and make it not just straight black.

Subtle, cool-edged neutrals are another way to define eyes and still wear a bolder lip color. The black eyeliner on both the top and upper lash lines (but note you can always modify this!) really give eyes more definition and make them *pop* without being too much. I’d pair this with a bronzy plum, bright blue-based red, or a deep berry for the holidays.

Taupe-y browns also work well when you want a bolder, more holiday-esque lip (which always have a tendency to be bold, bright, or deep). I never thought such a smoky brown eye would really work with a darker lip, but this worked fabulously (IMO, obviously!) with an ultra rich, magenta-pink lip.

Soft gold with amber work together to create a muted sunset-ish kind of look that’s got the holidays written all over it without it being in bright lights. I’d pair this with either a deep bronzy red or a bronzy nude.

Bright gold, soft coppers complement coppery, bronzy red lips well for the holiday season. This kind of look lets you have plenty of color on the lid while still wearing a bolder lip color.

Bronzy golds, subtle green is festive, holiday appropriate, and yet not the typical gold/neutral/smoky eye either. It can work with a light or medium lip color, depending on what kind of look you want to go for.

Soft, warmed-up neutrals are not only appropriate during the summertime, but they’re the perfect way to dress-up eyes and wear a bold, bright red lip color. They’re soft, natural, and don’t take any attention away from the beautiful red lip that would make this a great holiday look.

Five Reasons Beauty Junkies Should Join Twitter

  • Hear the latest tips/tricks from brands
  • Special Twitter-only giveaways/discounts
  • Ask questions on the fly to your favorite brands
  • Special sneak peeks of upcoming launches/products
  • Behind-the-scenes insight/photos

My favorite part about Twitter is how easy it is to interact with all of you–I love hearing your thoughts and feedback and getting to know you through tweets. My second favorite part is the interaction between consumers and their favorite brands. Obviously, my poison of choice is beauty, but it’s really amazing at how many brands are using Twitter in a proactive, interactive way that’s really fun to be a part of.

If you’re not already a regular Twitter user, you may not realize just how many major beauty brands are actively tweeting away! I created a list of many of the major beauty brands, and it stands at 151 different brands. I’m actually loving Twitter’s new list creation ability, because now I can just check out what beauty brands are saying separately from friends and readers. You can also easily follow my list by either bookmarking the list and just reading it that way or clicking the “follow” link.

Here are some tweet-lights from beauty brands from today:

  • @BloomCosmetics is giving customers 20% off during their Christmas party on November 25th from 6 to 8pm in their Chapel Street store
  • @ChinaGlaze showed swatch previews of the new shades from their Up and Away Collection for Spring
  • @Clarisonic is holding a Twitter giveaway for a MIA
  • @SallyBeauty released code 555262 to save 15% on all online orders over $25
  • @Sephora is holding their Sephora Clause giveaway/promotion
  • @UrbanDecay411 released a sneak peek video about upcoming UD products for 2010
