Crazy Busy Beautiful is a fun and easy read that includes beauty tips and tricks from–yep, you guessed it–Carmindy! The idea behind the book is that women are incredibly busy these days, and they don’t have the time to sort through all of the beauty information out there, so Carmindy’s put her favorite tips and pieces of advice in one place. I just got my copy, but I’m excited to start reading it this weekend–it’s going to be a nice break from legal eagle reading!
Temptalia: How can women feel beautiful every day?
Carmindy: By looking into the mirror in the morning and starting with a good positive mirror mantra. With the right positive attitude any makeup you put on the skin will look more beautiful!
T: If you only have ten minutes in the morning to do your makeup, what should you spend that time doing?
C: My 5 Minute Face technique is the right way to go and you can save the other 5 minutes for sipping tea and taking a moment to visualize the great day ahead. (see below for the order)
T: What order should you apply your makeup in? (e.g. concealer, foundation, primer, powder, blush)
C: This is the order:
Blend on foundation all over face including eye lids with a non-latex sponge
Dab on concealer under eyes
Tap on cream highlighter under the brows, on the inside corners of the eyes and on top of the cheekbones
Sweep a light dusting of powder all over face including eye lids (but avoiding top of the cheekbones and under the browbone)
Apply eyeliner on the upper lash line only
Sweep on mascara on the upper lash line only
Apply powder blush to the apples of the cheeks
Finish with a quick swipe of lip color.
T: What are your tricks and tips for finding the right foundation color?
C: Swipe 3 foundation shades that are as close to your skin tone as possible along the jawline and then go to a window in the daylight and look into a mirror. The color that disappears into your skin is the correct shade for you.
T: Where do you get inspiration for the beauty looks you create?
C: Traveling the world and looking at unique women every day.
Carmindy discusses more about real beauty and how she got her start as a makeup artist in this interview.
Temptalia was invited by Purple Lab and its founder, Karen Robinovitz, to come to their launch on HSN on Thursday, February 18th. Purple Lab showed five times on HSN, and the first one was an 9am show-time, but the big show was on at 8pm. I was there for both! This is an exclusive, inside look at not only how Purple Lab’s show came together, but the process itself and how things run at HSN.
It was a very interesting and educational experience, because there really is so much that goes behind-the-scenes to put together a brand’s launch on HSN. I asked how many people it took to go from the ground and up with Purple Lab, and it was estimated to be at least 100. It takes 100 people’s hands to get a show on the air and ready to go live! I think that’s just one of those, “Whoa!” moments, because as a regular viewer, I wouldn’t have even thought about that many people having to be involved to get it from the concept to finished product.
Karen is passionate about the products she creates and totally in love with her line, so it was an absolutely incredible experience to watch someone’s dreams all come true. She said to me and others on set that she didn’t want to create a product unless it was better than the one she was currently using. Karen wants all products to be “double duty beauty,” which means they’re multi-tasking products that aren’t just color, but are color and contain ingredients helpful to the skin. She’s definitely a strong, confident woman who’s going after what she wants, and she’s been able to realize her dream of being on HSN!
Purple Lab debuted on HSN to launch five new products alongside their first product, Huge Lips, Skinny Hips. The range now includes Cheek Implants (cream blush available in two shades), Lashionista Modelista (tubing mascara/liquid liner), Silk Sheets (foundation, available in four shades), Luvah (lipstick/lipgloss duo), and Luxury Squared (concealer/highlighter).
“The Sophie Théallet hair look for this season is soft, tousled, and romantic—a mélange of country girl and princess. Hair is loosely pulled back and twisted into a textured, slightly teased ponytail with long wisps of hair framing the face.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda
Prep damp hair with Aveda Volumizing Tonic™ for volume and shine, massaging it into roots. Blow-dry hair at half speed.
Create a deep side part and separate the fringe and hair around the face.
Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion into the rest of the hair for matte texture and tousled volume, massaging it into the scalp.
Slightly backcomb hair at the crown, using a wide-tooth comb to create a textured, distressed look. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for maximum hold.
Pull hair into a low, loose, half-up ponytail and secure with an elastic band, leaving the fringe and front wisps loose.
Divide remaining bottom half of hair into right and left sections. Backcomb the right section and twist it over the ponytail elastic. Secure hair just to the left side of the ponytail using hair pins.
Take the remaining left section of free hair and create another loose ponytail behind the left ear. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.
Combine the two ponytails by pinning them together behind the left ear. Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion liberally through the length of the ponytail and tousle with fingers to create texture. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.

I JUST got home from Tampa like… an hour ago (had to have lunch, take a shower – traveling always makes me feel EW!). I’ve been up since midnight PST! I’ll be working on getting photos and writing up the behind-the-scenes action and look at both HSN and the debut of Purple Lab on HSN soon.
Did you know that the shows you see on HSN are live 24/7, 364 days a year? Even when you turn it on at 2am in the morning, you’re watching a live show. (The only time they’re not live is Christmas.) Just to put together Purple Lab’s debut and launch on HSN took over 100 people working hard over a period of months. Who knew so much went into each show?

A 1930s Egyptian influence weaves together fashion and beauty at the Fall 2010 Rachel Roy Fashion Show. Peacock prints are lifted from feminine silhouettes and translated into bold, beautiful makeup. Iridescent “peacock feather” eyes gleam in denim and burgundy metallic shades from brow to lower lash line with a hint of aqua on inner corners, ultimately lined with a black kohl pencil. An even, dewy finish of the skin, softly defined pink cheek, and sheer beige lip allow the eyes to be the star of this show.
