This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! This program began 1985, and through its tremendous awareness efforts, the mammography rates for women 50 or older have double, and the amount of deaths related to breast cancer have declined. One of the purposes of the organization and month long awareness promotion is to encourage all women to screen and prevent breast cancer by doing breast self-examinations once a month as well as seeing a doctor and having a mammogram done regularly.

Breast cancer increases with age (rare in women under age 35), but it’s never too early to start preventative measures and talking with your doctor about getting tested and how to reduce your risk.

Here is the transcript of Temptalia’s interview with Dita Von Teese.

I want to give a huge thank you to Heather at MAC for allowing Temptalia to have the opportunity of not just meeting, but interviewing Dita Von Teese! Girl, you know I love you!

INTERVIEW

Christine: I run a beauty blog, so basically I’m going to ask you some beauty questions.

Dita: Okay, okay.

Christine: I want to know how do you keep your skin so perfect?

Dita: Well, I use sunscreen religiously. But not in a psychotic manner! I know there were a lot of tabloid stories going around about me traveling with sunscreen curtains and everything. All this crazy, like, that I have a diet to keep my skin white. None of that’s true – it’s basic sunscreen, it’s what everybody should do, even if they don’t want to be as pale as me. It’s important to use sunscreen, so that’s my number one. Getting my beauty sleep is my number two, sleep makes a big difference in how my skin looks.

Christine: I noticed you’re wearing very, very high heels. How do you survive heels that high? What’s your secret?

Dita: My secret is staying in good shape. I think that I’m always, I work out a lot, and it’s not really just so my body looks a certain way. I feel stronger even walking in heels. I just feel more powerful and strong when I’m in good shape, and that’s one thing, and buying good quality shoes helps you support you.

DITA VON TEESE & TEMPTALIA.COM

(Why am I hunching?! Dita looks great!!)

Thanks to MAC Cosmetics, Temptalia went backstage at Macy’s Passport 2007 (San Francisco) to interview the very sultry Dita Von Teese, international queen of burlesque. Check out this unedited 15-minute interview with this gorgeous Viva Glam spokesperson!

Dita Von Teese is an absolute doll; she’s terribly nice, and there are these quirks and mannerisms that remind you she’s human, friendly, and so down to earth. It is definitely a great way to put a first-timer (myself) at ease straight away in the interviewing process. She laughs often, and it’s easy to see she enjoys everything she does – her life is what she wants it to be. It is impossible not to admire someone with this kind of attitude in life, plus, she’s accomplished it.

We can’t wait to see more of Miss Teese in the future!

This is just a bit of a photo post to show you some shots I took from last night! Passport was a real production when it comes to fashion shows – it really felt more like it belonged in Vegas! They had fog/smoke for tons of the shows, plus performances between designers. They had African dancers and drummers show off their skills, as well as a troupe of hip hop dancers (with little kids even!) that had a solo performance and then they played off the African dancers. Top unicyclists paraded down the stage doing some stunt work about halfway through. Even a motorcycle came revving down the stage at one point!

They had nine segments: The Manor (traditional classic designs for men and women), Marc Ecko was responsible for the unicyclists and motorbike star, plus showed off his line of clothing, Calvin Klein did a series of vignettes of chic, urban people, followed by African youth troupe “The Spirit of Uganda”, a fabulous shoe spectacular by Via Spiga with models/dancers imperonsating famous musicians (Diana Ross, The Supremes, Elvis, etc.), Levi’s was there and the best part was their body-painted male models, Academy of Art showed off student designs, another Calvin Klein collection — underwear — which had all the ladies swooning, and the last runway collection was themed in silver (all are available on eBay as auctions). Of course, the very last performance was by the one an only Dita Von Teese with a toned down version of her famous martini glass show!

DITA VON TEESE FOR MAC COSMETICS

Temptalia is heading off to Macy’s Passport 2007 in San Francisco this Wednesday. Passport is a fundraising effort put on by Macy’s for donations towards AIDS awareness and causes. I’ll also be able to meet Dita von Teese, one of MAC Cosmetics Viva Glam spokeswomen. If you aren’t aware, MAC has its own MAC Aids Fund, which donates and supports AIDS programs around the world. Viva Glam is a lipstick line where 100% of proceeds are donated towards AIDS causes; these are lipsticks found in the lipstick tubes with red accents.

In 1994, MAC introduced VIVA GLAM, an outspoken deep red that was universal in its appeal and its glamour. In 1997, a second lipstick was created, VIVA GLAM II, a lightly pinked mauve. VIVA GLAM III, a foxy brown plum lipstick was launched in 2000. VIVA GLAM IV, a heartfelt rose charged with gold, was introduced in March 2002. In March 2004, VIVA GLAM V was launched in both a Lipstick and Lipglass – to a tremendous response around the world which has continued to this day, thanks to the dynamic efforts and dedication of all the VIVA GLAM V spokespeople. In September 2006, VIVA GLAM VI Lipstick makes its debut, a warm terracotta-plum with pearl finish. This is coordinated with VIVA GLAM VI Lipglass, a subtle terracotta-peach with pearl to be worn over its namesake lipstick. In the spirit of all VIVA GLAM, every cent raised goes to the MAC AIDS Fund to support the fight against HIV/AIDS.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK | MAC COSMETICS BACKSTAGE

ZAC POSEN
Zac Posen is always about utter sophistication – and the look James Kaliardos created for Posen’s wheat and gold themed clothes was simple, urban, refined – and utterly unique. Using bronze, gold and taupe eye shadow powders, he created a crescent in the eye crease that had width and drama – and dragged all the way out into the browbone area. A little bit of taupe contoured the face, and pearl was dotted on top – and the lip was left totally nude. Powder was actually used to nude out the mouth. It was a quiet look – that packed a lot of power.

HEATHERETTE
Makeup freaks wait all year to see what kind of wonders super makeup artist Kabuki will whip up out his vast imagination for Heatherette. For Spring/Summer, he came up with two looks; one was a black metallic sparkly eye socket with a heavy line of winged white eyeliner over it, with shine on the cheeks and brow bone – the other a very powdered white face with juicy orange lips and eye lashes so long they nearly swept the ceiling – all hand applied over hours. Realism is not what it’s about at Heatherette – fantasy is.

MONIQUE LHULLIER
“It’s a 1930′s contour aerodynamic face,” is how James Kaliardos described his look for the Monique Lhullier Spring/Summer show. Using MAC Taupe
Powder Blush as a facial contour and on the temples, he created a field of high and low lights. Patina Eye Shadow was placed on the eye sockets and Pearl Cream Colour Base was dotted on the inner corners of the eyes. The focus; a silvery beige pigment powder whipped up especially for the show that swooped out from the brow bone out almost to the ears. A pale peach lipgloss was applied to finish the look. But not before the all-important concealer was dotted on lips. There was not one makeup artist was didn’t mention concealer on the mouth all week.

CARMEN MARC VALVO
Sure, there’s been a lot of contouring this week – but generally the tanned bronzed goddess of Spring/Summers of yesteryear has been replaced by paler dewier skin – and in the case of Carmen Marc Valvo, it’s a whiter shade of pale. Tom Pecheux gave the girls nearly pearlescent faces, and the major focus was a sparkly white shine on the eyes and cheekbones. They practically glistened. On top of that, a doll-like (because colour on a white face looks doll-like) peach cheek and pale peach lips. We’ve heard the words “Madame Pompadour” this week, and that’s clearly the influence Carmen Marc Valvo was going for.
