5 Shades of Serenity

Here’s the second shade chosen for Color of the Year, “Serenity.” It’ll be interesting to see this color incorporated into just about every mainstream brand’s releases in 2016, because it’s a difficult color to do well. Pastels in general can be tricky, and shades of this kind of periwinkle blue are no different. Anyone else hoping for an interpretation of this as a highlighter? Like an iridescent bluish sheen? Please?

  1. Colour Pop Prance — A Cool Blue with a Matte finish.
  2. NYX Earl Grey — A Cool Blue with a Satin finish.
  3. Make Up For Ever I212 Periwinkle — A Cool Blue with a Satin finish.
  4. Zoya Skylar — A Cool Blue with a Frost finish.
  5. Inglot #429 — A Cool Blue with a Frost finish.

5 Shades of Rose Quartz

Not one but two shades were selected as “Color of the Year” by Pantone for 2016. Their decision of choosing two hues, a pastel blue and pink, commonly associated as gender-specific colors, was explained as, “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.” That’s what I like to hear! Here are five existing shades that line-up with the concept of Rose Quartz, which is a “warmer embracing rose tone.”

  1. Buxom Feather Boa — A Warm Pink with a Matte finish.
  2. NYX French Kiss — A Warm Pink with a Natural finish.
  3. Estee Lauder Desirable — A Warm Pink with a Natural finish.
  4. Zoya Rue — A Neutral Pink with a Cream finish.
  5. Inglot #356 — A Warm Pink with a Matte finish.

Zoya Remy, Sansa, Yuna Nail Lacquers

Zoya Remy Nail Lacquer ($9.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as an “indigo with copper and gold liquid metal.” It’s an inky, blackened navy blue with lighter blue and teal sparkle. It seems like the “copper and gold” turns into a lighter, bluish-teal with the blue polish over/mixed with it. This was so pigmented–it was pretty much opaque in one coat, but the swatches show two. It was slightly thin but not particularly problematic to apply. Marc Jacobs Beauty Blue Velvet (132) (P, $18.00) is lighter, brighter, smaller shimmer. Color Club First Looks (P) is darker, smaller shimmer. China Glaze Little Drummer Boy (LE, $7.50) is darker, smaller shimmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Zoya India, Teigen, Autumn Nail Lacquers

Zoya India Nail Lacquer ($9.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep, luxurious red with a gold liquid metallic shimmer.” It’s a deep, blackened reddish wine with gold sparkle that looks more like a mix of gold and copper, depending on the angle and lighting. It was fully opaque after two coats of polish, and it applied smoothly and evenly. I didn’t notice any brush strokes, but the consistency did run a little thick. It didn’t seem to impede application. Essie Toggle to the Top (P, $8.00) has much larger sparkle/glitter. Chanel Malice (LE, $27.00) is much darker with finer shimmer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Black Metal Dahlia (P, $10.00) is darker with finer shimmer. Illamasqua Charisma (P, $17.00) has finer shimmer. Dior Apparat (LE, $24.00) has finer shimmer. China Glaze Sugar Plums (LE, $7.50) is less shimmer, larger sparkle. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
