theBalm Pinstripe Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush
theBalm Pinstripe Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush

theBalm Pinstripe Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush ($22.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as a “plum.” It’s a medium-dark, pink-plum with hints of fuchsia/red and a satiny, golden shimmer-sheen finish. NARS Realm of the Senses #2 is warmer, less fuchsia. NARS Oasis is more muted, more plum. NARS Outlaw is more muted. NARS Dolce Vita is similar but lacks the golden sheen. See comparison swatches.

Pinstripe was incredibly pigmented–a little goes a long way–so use a lighter hand to build up color gradually to ensure the level of intensity you desire. The texture is soft without being powdery, but it does have a tendency to apply where it lands, so blending out a lot of excess color can be problematic and result in somewhat uneven color application. The shimmer is somewhat frosty, but the more the color is buffed and worked into the skin, the more satin-like it becomes. At a higher frost level, it can emphasize pores slightly (not horribly but it was something I did notice). This shade lasted well for eight hours and was somewhat faded along the edges after nine hours, so it did not wear as long as some of the other shades in this formula have.

theBalm Houndstooth Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush
theBalm Houndstooth Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush

theBalm Houndstooth Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush ($22.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as a “mauve.” It’s a medium-dark pink-plum with a satin finish. For a plum, it’s quite pink and lighter than the typical plum blush. Bobbi Brown Summer Pink is pinker, brighter. Tom Ford Wicked is more shimmery, cooler-toned. theBalm Cabana Boy is more plum. MAC Pink Tea is cooler-toned. MAC Subtle Breeze is similar. MAC Gentle is more shimmery. Chanel Rose Initiale is pinker. Bobbi Brown Pink Rose is similar. See comparison swatches.

The texture was soft, finely-milled, and applied very smoothly and evenly. It was easy to blend out the product, and it didn’t stick as soon as it hit the skin, so you could diffuse and soften the edges. Houndstooth had true-to-pan color and can be applied as intensely as seen in the pan or applied with a lighter hand for softer color, but it is quite pigmented. If you are fairer or prefer a subtler look, apply less than you think you need and go from there. When I wore this shade, it lasted well for eight and a half hours, and after ten hours, it looked patchy in a few places but still held up well overall.

One color I definitely associate with autumn is plum, so building on some of the recent lists, I thought I’d do one featuring some pretty plums today!

  1. theBalm Cabana Boy — a soft, muted plum with a luminous golden sheen for cheeks
  2. Zoya Mason — a warm, shimmery plum with a metallic finish for nails
  3. MAC Craving — a beautiful pinky-plum with a satiny finish for lips
  4. Chanel Merveille — a semi-opaque neutral plum with lots of shimmer for lips
  5. Bobbi Brown Naked Plum — a semi-sheer plum with cool undertones and pink and gold sparkle for lips

What are your top three favorite plum beauty products?

theBalm Swiss Dot Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush
theBalm Swiss Dot Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush

theBalm Swiss Dot Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush ($22.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as a “peach.” It’s a medium-dark orange with subtle red undertones and a matte finish. Chanel Presage is similar but a cream product. NARS Gilda is slightly pinker. MAC Early Morning is a touch more muted. MAC Out for Fun is slightly redder and brighter, also a cream product. Guerlain Peach Boy #1 is pinker/redder. Chanel Frivole is slightly lighter. See comparison swatches.

It’s intensely pigmented with rich color payoff. The texture is soft and finely-milled without being powdery. It does have a tendency to cling to the skin almost immediately, so I highly recommend applying over totally dry/set foundation (if it is liquid/cream) with a light hand and patting, then blending. You may consider lightly dusting cheeks with a finishing or setting powder and then applying the blush, because this will help it blend better. Even on bare skin, it sometimes would stick where it landed, and it would be difficult to blend out. Swiss Dot wore well, though, for eight and a half hours, and after ten hours of wear, it started looking patchy, so it lives up to its long-wearing claim.

theBalm Toile Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush
theBalm Toile Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush

theBalm Toile Instain Long-Wearing Staining Powder Blush ($22.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as a “strawberry.” It’s a bright, bold coral-pink with a barely-there satin sheen. MAC Simmer is similar. NARS Amour is slightly more muted, less warm-toned. See comparison swatches.

It’s incredibly pigmented with true-to-pan color, but the coverage is more buildable than over-the-top. I would still recommend using a lighter hand when initially applying so that you can adjust the intensity more readily. The texture is soft, finely-milled, and it wasn’t powdery. As I applied Toile to the skin, it blended out easily initially, but it tends to stick in place once it is sheered out slightly. The blush wore nine and a half hours on me without fading, so it lived up to its long-wearing claim. I wouldn’t describe this so much as a product that stains, as it easily removes with regular makeup remover with no extra elbow grease required.

theBalm Argyle Instain Long-Wearing Powder Staining Blush
theBalm Argyle Instain Long-Wearing Powder Staining Blush

theBalm Argyle Instain Long-Wearing Powder Staining Blush ($22.00 for 0.20 oz.) is described as a “petal pink.” It’s a bubblegum pink–a light-medium, blue-based pink–with a matte finish. NYX English Rose is more shimmery, darker. MAC Stay Pretty is warmer. MAC I’m the One is brighter. Chanel Pink Explosion is slightly darker. Bobbi Brown Pastel Pink is a bit darker. See comparison swatches.

It had rich, true-to-pan color payoff. It packs quite a punch, so I’d recommend using a light hand to build up the color to your desired intensity. The texture is soft, finely-milled but not powdery. It blends well if you use a light touch, but I noticed that it has a tendency to stick where it’s placed once it is buffed into the skin to a degree. Argyle lasted well without fading or becoming patchy for a solid ten hours, so it is indeed long-wearing. It removed easily, though, with makeup remover, whereas a traditional stain would still leave something behind, so I wouldn’t describe this as a cheek stain, but it was an exceptionally long-wearing powder blush.

It's exceptionally long-wearing and incredibly pigmented! It can be a little tricky to apply and blend out to just the right intensity, especially if you want to wear it as a softer wash of color.
