Fairytale

Tarte Fairytale Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint ($20.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark blue-leaning aqua with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable to opaque with two to three layers. The consistency was thin and spreadable, but it applied streakily and had a tendency to pull into lip lines as it was drying down.

The formula is supposed to have “high-impact, opaque matte color” that is non-drying and doesn’t crack or feather. I’ve tried most shades in this formula, and it can be rather hit or miss–probably more misses than hits. Unfortunately, Fairytale was another miss, as it just did not apply well and absolutely did look “cracked” as soon as I smiled. The color lasted for four and a half hours on me before fading more heavily from the center of my lips, and it was somewhat drying over time.

Revel

Tarte Revel Metallic Shadow ($14.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark red with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color coverage–just shy of opaque–that applied evenly and smoothly on the lid. The texture was soft, a smidgen loose so there was some excess product kicked up in the pan, but it was easy to work with as it was blendable and adhered well to bare skin. It lasted for eight hours on me before fading.

The Metallic Shadow formula is supposed to have “smooth payoff” that have “lasting vibrancy with no fallout” and are “ultra-pigmented.” They are also designed to be removable, so you can easily put them into an empty palette. The original set of shades were released in plastic compacts, but the most recent release featured them in cardboard compacts. The formula is typically very pigmented, smooth, and blendable with good wear (around eight hours). They work well and are easy to work with, and I’m glad to see that they brand has continued to expand their color selection in this formula.

Make Believe In Yourself

Tarte Make Believe In Yourself Eye & Cheek Palette ($40.00 for 0.485 oz.) includes ten eyeshadows and one highlighter. housed in a circular compact with a large mirror inside. The formula is supposed to have a “silky-soft” texture and a “long-lasting finish without any fallout or chalkiness.” Across the board, the formula featured a denser powder texture, where there was no excess product kicked up in the pan and often using a patting/pushing motion with brushes was better than gently sweeping for picking up product onto a brush. There were a few that I think would work best with flat, synthetic brushes rather than anything fluffy (like Wings and Marvel).

The majority of the eyeshadows were very pigmented, frosted and metallic in finish, and blendable on the eye, though a couple ran sheerer or seemed chunkier in texture, so they required a little more finessing. The lone matte eyeshadow seemed out of place, both with respect to the tone of it (pinker) as well as the fact that it’s not going to work across all skin tones. Since the whole palette is so shimmery, I think that the one matte eyeshadow should have just been one more shimmer, as I expect anyone who would have wanted a matte eyeshadow to need to reach for more mattes than just the one presently included. The highlighter was intense but might emphasize one’s natural skin texture at medium or great coverage levels. The palette’s powders had a subtle, vanilla scent.

Tarte Downtown Metallic Shadow ($14.00 for 0.07 oz.) is muted, dark brown base with lighter silvery teal flecks of sparkle and shimmer. The texture was looser in the pan and almost felt dry, though it did not sheer out like you might think a drier eyeshadow would. It did have more fallout than other shades during application, as some of the sparkles just did not bind well with the base color. It had great color payoff, though, and lasted for seven hours on me.

Tarte Exposed Tarteist PRO Glow Liquid Highlighter ($29.00 for 0.56 oz.) is a light-medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-sheer, buildable color payoff that was mostly opaque after three layers.

It’s a liquid highlighter in a squeeze-tube format that’s supposed to be buildable “from sheer to intense” with a more “hybrid gel-cream” texture that can be applied on its own or mixed in with base products. It had a creamier consistency–much denser and more gel-like compared to many highlighters–that stretches out well on the skin. It took a little longer to dry down, but it did set and did not feel tacky or wet afterward. I liked the versatility in coverage, as the more gel-like texture made it easy to spread, diffuse, and sheer out but did not sheer out too quickly (where building up would have become difficult). The highlighter worked well mixed with the two foundations I tried (Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea and Lancome Teint Idole) and did not overly warm them, just made them look a little dewier. It wore well for eight hours as a cheek highlighter.

Tarte Stunner Tarteist PRO Glow Liquid Highlighter ($29.00 for 0.56 oz.) is a champagne gold with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling sheen. The coverage was buildable from semi-sheer to opaque, but for totally opaque results, I would recommend applying a semi-sheer layer, allow it to set, and then go back with a little more but would just pat it over the areas you want to intensify the most and do minimal blending to avoid lifting any base products.

It’s a liquid highlighter in a squeeze-tube format that’s supposed to be buildable “from sheer to intense” with a more “hybrid gel-cream” texture that can be applied on its own or mixed in with base products. It took a little longer to dry down, but it did set and did not feel tacky or wet afterward. It was fairly easy to use on bare skin, with foundation, or applied on top of liquid foundation or over loose powder. Used on its own as a cheek highlighter, it wore well for eight hours on me.
