Tarte Sculpted Cheeks Amazonian Clay Blush Set & Brush

Tarte Sculpted Cheeks Deluxe Amazonian Clay Blush Set & Brush
Tarte Sculpted Cheeks Deluxe Amazonian Clay Blush Set & Brush

Tarte Sculpted Cheeks Deluxe Amazonian Clay Blush Set & Brush ($35.00 for 0.20 oz.) includes four, deluxe-sized blushes and a synthetic, blush brush.

The Amazonian Clay Blush formula is supposed to have 12-hour wear along with a “supremely soft” texture. There’s a lot to like about Tarte’s formula, as it is softer (sometimes dusty), blendable, and fairly smooth with good pigmentation, but for me, I rarely get 12-hour wear–I do get between 8 and 10-hour wear, though. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel that the blushes in the set were representative of the quality of the regular formula. The blushes are disappointing; two of the four were so stiff that I had to scrape off layers of product to get enough product to transfer and show on the skin as a swatch.

Value

  • Full-size cost: $28.00 for 0.20 oz., $140.00/oz.
  • Set cost: $35.00 for 0.20 oz., $175.00/oz., plus full-sized brush
  • Value: $28.00 worth of blush, $20-30 value for brush, $48 to $58 total value

Genius is a muted, medium rosy mauve with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was incredibly powdery and dry to the touch, which resulted in a color that sheered out too easily on the skin and did not want to stick to the skin evenly. It seemed to brighten on my cheeks, almost like when a matte powder darkens on the skin due to the natural oils. It lasted for seven hours on me (which is a far cry from 12).
Colour Pop Cruel Intentions (LE, $8.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Tarte Irreplaceable (LE, $28.00) is brighter (95% similar). Too Faced Your Love is King (P, $26.00) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). Tarte Fetching (LE, $28.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). The Estee Edit Purr Pink (03) (P, $28.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). theBalm Houndstooth (P, $22.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Tarte Amazed (LE, $28.00) is lighter, more muted (90% similar). Estee Lauder Pink Ingenue (P, $34.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Tarte Icon (LE, $28.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Exhibitionist (LE) is lighter (85% similar). NYX Dusty Rose (P, $5.00) is lighter (85% similar). Tarte Live (LE, $28.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). NYX Mauve (P, $5.00) is lighter (85% similar). Chanel Crescendo (250) (LE, $45.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Royal is a muted, rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a satiny sheen. It had such a stiff texture that made it difficult to use at all; I could not get product to transfer on my brush, and I could barely get any color to transfer after jabbing a finger in the pan–I had to scrape off layers of product to loosen it from the pan, which is what I used for swatches (both on my arm and on my face). Without scraping and mangling the powder, it had next to nothing for color payoff and not enough product to blend or diffuse across my cheeks. It lasted for eight hours on me. Makeup Geek Puppy Love (P, $10.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Surratt Beauty La Vie En Rose (P, $32.00) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Ven Conmigo (LE, $22.00) is warmer (90% similar). Laura Geller Roseberry (P, $28.00) is more shimmery, cooler (90% similar). MAC Corol #2 (LE, $22.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Plum Ombre (LE, $55.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Unearthed (LE, $28.00) is warmer (90% similar). bareMinerals The Guest List (LE, $22.00) is warmer (85% similar). KIKO 105 Dark Rose (P, $12.00) is more shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). MAC Animal Instincts (LE, $22.00) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Vibrant is a bright pop of orange-coral with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The consistency was soft, just a bit dusty, but blendable and sat well on the skin. It had more of a natural matte finish when blended on the skin, so it didn’t look dry or flat applied. It had good pigmentation as well. On me, the color wore well for just over eight hours. KIKO 108 Orange Coral (P, $12.00) is more shimmery, darker, more muted (95% similar). bareMinerals Swoon (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Lured to Love (LE, $27.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty The Afternooner (Blush) (LE) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Milani Coral Cove (05) (P, $8.99) is darker (90% similar). MAC Passion for Colour (LE, $22.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). MAC Sideshow You (LE, $22.00) is cooler (90% similar). Tarte Mod (LE, $28.00) is darker (90% similar). Too Faced Peach Cobbler (LE) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). LORAC Technicolor (P, $22.00) is cooler (85% similar). Colour Pop Tongue Tied (LE, $8.00) is darker, brighter, warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Pop is a bright cotton candy pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. This was the other shade that had an incredibly stiff, firm texture; I had to scrape away at the surface of the pan to dislodge enough powder to show swatches or to use it, but what powder was dislodged was softer and more finely-milled than Royal, so I did not have any issues with applying or blending out the color once I was able to pick up product with my brush. It lasted for eight and a half hours on my cheeks. Tarte Surreal (LE, $28.00) is lighter (95% similar). theBalm Argyle (P, $22.00) is brighter, cooler (90% similar). Tarte Whimsy (LE, $28.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Temper (LE) is lighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Exhibitionist (LE) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Flush (P, $28.00) is lighter, more muted (90% similar). Too Faced Santa Baby (LE) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Shadore (P, $37.00) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Sculpted Cheeks Brush is a larger cheek brush that flares from the ferrule to a rounded edge. It looked more like a highlighting brush than the average blush brush, but it definitely works for applying cheek color. It had a lot of spring, and I would say floppier than desired for precise cheek color application. I liked it more for blending or using with something very sheer than applying a pigmented blush, as it seemed to apply in a very large area. The brush itself was fairly soft and wasn’t prickly or scratchy when I tried to use. I didn’t experience any shedding or issues after washing it a few times, but my experience with is limited. The brush head was 24.28mm in width, 48.15mm in length, and 24.28mm in thickness. It had a total length of 6.50 inches / 16.5 centimeters.

[Please note: it is not possible to average the Sculpted Cheeks Brush scores with the blush scores as the things they are measuring are different, so I have only taken the Product rating for the brush to average a Product rating for the set.]

Tarte Color Wheel Amazonian Clay Blush Palette

Tarte Color Wheel Amazonian Clay Blush Palette
Tarte Color Wheel Amazonian Clay Blush Palette

Tarte Coor Wheel Amazonian Clay Blush Palette ($44.00 for 0.84 oz.) includes 10 blushes housed in a circular compact that opens and reveals five blushes on each side (there is no mirror as a result). Each pan is a decent size at 0.084 oz. a pop with a wide enough diameter that most blush brushes fit easily in them. The pans did not appear removable (I tried three pans with tweezers, and I didn’t feel any give). It would be a travel-friendly way to take so many blushes with you without taking up a lot of space.

Overall, the quality was consistent with the full-sized Tarte blushes I’ve tried with only one shade having a firmer, stiffer texture. I think they could have varied the colors used in the palette a bit more, but at least there is some variety in undertones and finishes. If you have a few blush palettes from Tarte, you may find that there is a lot of overlap, even if shades are not exact dupes, as the brand is prone to repeating itself each holiday! I think this a wish list worthy option for someone who is a big fan of Tarte’s formula or needs to have an instant blush stash.

Value

  • Full-size cost: $28.00 for 0.20 oz., $140.00/oz.
  • Palette cost: $44.00 for 0.84 oz., $52.38/oz.
  • Value: $117.60 worth of blush / $4.40 per shade

Crafty is a light peach with warm undertones and gold shimmer. This will work more as a highlighter than a blush for most skin tones, though it has a whiter base, so deeper skin tones may want to layer it over another cheek color. The texture was soft, blendable, and did not emphasize my skin’s natural texture when applied. It wore well for eight and a half hours. Cle de Peau Delicate Pink (14) (P, $55.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Tutu (LE, $30.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Viseart Highlight #1 (P) is less shimmery (90% similar). Makeup Revolution Radiant Lights (P, $6.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Laura Mercier Highlight 01 (P, $40.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Looxi Beauty Goddess (P, $7.50) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Laura Geller Peach Glow (P, $24.00) is cooler (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Concept is a muted, medium-dark rosy coral with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had good pigmentation paired with a soft, blendable texture that was a bit thin and dusty, so it sheered out noticeably when applied to the cheeks. Luckily, it could be built up to greater intensity. This shade wore for nine hours before starting to fade on me. MAC I'll Hold My Breath #2 (LE) is cooler (95% similar). NARS Illusive (LE, $30.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Surratt Beauty Parfait (P, $32.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (90% similar). KIKO 108 Orange Coral (P, $12.00) is darker, brighter (90% similar). bareMinerals Swoon (LE, $19.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (90% similar). Estee Lauder Sensuous Rose (P, $34.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Mod (LE, $28.00) is darker, brighter, warmer (90% similar). Chanel Angelique (190) (P, $45.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Guerlain Petrouchka #7 (LE) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Colour Pop Between the Sheets (P, $8.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty The Afternooner (Blush) (LE) is darker (85% similar). The Estee Edit Coy Coral (02) (P, $28.00) is warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Icon is a muted, medium rosy pink with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had the type of finish that seemed matte initially, but it had a more natural matte finish when blended and buffed on the skin–it didn’t look dry or flat. This shade had a soft, lightly dusty texture that was very blendable and easy to use, and it did not sheer out unduly like Concept did, so the dustiness wasn’t noticeable when I used it on the cheeks. I was able to wear this one for nine hours before it started to show signs of wear. Chanel Crescendo (250) (LE, $45.00) is brighter (95% similar). MAC Formal (LE) is lighter (95% similar). Tarte Genius (LE, $28.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). NYX Dusty Rose (P, $5.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Amazed (LE, $28.00) is warmer (90% similar). Estee Lauder Pink Ingenue (P, $34.00) is warmer (90% similar). Stila Dusty Rose (LE) is more muted (90% similar). Chanel Jardin de Chanel (LE, $55.00) is lighter (90% similar). NYX Mauve (P, $5.00) is lighter (90% similar). bareMinerals Glamour (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Chanel Rose Tourbillon (67) (LE, $45.00) is more shimmery, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Montage is a deep raspberry pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. The pigmentation was good, while the consistency was smooth but too firm in the pan, so it was harder to blend out on the skin. It had more of a natural finish as it was blended on the skin. On me, this shade wore well for nine hours. MAC Red Water Lily (LE, $40.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Sunset Beach (LE, $32.00) is brighter (95% similar). Chanel Rosewood (350) (P, $45.00) is darker (95% similar). Sephora Love Sick (22) (P, $14.00) is warmer (95% similar). Tarte Ironic (LE, $28.00) is warmer (90% similar). Colour Pop Hysterical (LE, $8.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). By Terry Tan & Flash Cruise #1 (LE) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Pretty Pink (P, $26.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Peaches & Cream (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Edward Bess Bed of Roses (P, $43.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Illamasqua Peaked (P, $26.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Stila Pink Rose Blush (LE) is lighter, more muted (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Ironic is a medium-dark, pinky plum with neutral-to-warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. This blush had excellent color payoff, while the texture was soft, just a smidgen powdery, and blended easily on the skin. I noticed the finish looked less matte and flat as I blended the product on my cheeks. The wear came in closer to nine hours on this particular color. Too Faced Your Love is King (P, $26.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Colour Pop Cruel Intentions (LE, $8.00) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora Love Sick (22) (P, $14.00) is more shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Tarte Montage (LE, $28.00) is cooler (90% similar). Viseart Plum #3 (P) is darker (90% similar). Chanel Rosewood (350) (P, $45.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Tarte Fetching (LE, $28.00) is lighter, more muted (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Sand Pink (P, $26.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Clinique Black Honey Pop (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Fever (P, $22.00) is darker (80% similar). Becca Nightingale (P, $32.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Idol is a light-medium, yellowed gold with warm, orange undertones and a frosted sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly dusty texture–this one was prone to sheering out, but I imagine that for most this will be used as a highlighter and that sheerness will be more appreciated than not. The sheen is subtle on my skin, and the color didn’t seem to translate as noticeably as I had anticipated, but as always, this will likely have more color impact on fairer complexions. It wore well for eight hours on me. Laura Mercier Addiction (P, $44.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Pyrite (LE) is darker (90% similar). Becca Opal (P, $38.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Becca Champagne Pop (P, $38.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Giorgio Armani No. 02 (P, $62.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Illamasqua Rush (P) is more shimmery (90% similar). theBalm Solid Gold (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (85% similar). Smashbox Glow (LE) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Culture is a bright pop of peony pink with warmer undertones (though not strongly warm) paired with warmer, golden shimmer. It had good color coverage with a powdery texture, though it was soft, finely-milled, and remained blendable on the skin. There seemed to be pigmentation to spare, as it did not sheer out noticeably in practice. This shade lasted for almost nine hours on me. Benefit Bella Bamba (DC, $28.00)(95% similar). Chanel Rose Glacier (170) (LE, $45.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Tarina Tarantino Parasol (P, $25.00) is brighter, cooler (90% similar). Tarte Laugh (LE, $28.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Laura Geller Peach Delight (P, $28.00) is lighter (90% similar). Becca Flowerchild (P, $32.00) is warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Raindrops on Roses (LE) is cooler (90% similar). Laura Geller Rosewater (P, $26.00) is cooler (85% similar). Becca Rose Spritz (LE, $34.00) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). Becca Camellia (P, $34.00) is cooler (85% similar). Too Faced Something About Berry (P, $30.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Laura Geller Fruit Punch (P, $28.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). By Terry Light & Tan Vibes #2 (LE) is darker, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Surreal is a bright, medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It was nicely pigmented, and I felt like a little went a long way, possibly due to the general brightness of it as well as the richness in pigment. The texture was soft, finely-milled, and a bit on the dusty side, but it did not appear dry or chalky applied to my skin. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading on me. Tarte Pop (LE, $28.00) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Temper (LE) is darker (95% similar). theBalm Argyle (P, $22.00) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Blush (P) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Tarte Flush (P, $28.00) is more muted (95% similar). Tarte Whimsy (LE, $28.00) is lighter (95% similar). Chanel Pink Explosion (LE, $45.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Surratt Beauty Tu Me Fais Rougir (P, $32.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Shadore (P, $37.00) is more muted (90% similar). KIKO 110 Bright Pink (P, $12.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Pure Femininity (LE, $22.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Pink Swoon (P, $22.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Deco is a medium, pink-coral with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The pigmentation was mostly opaque, while the powder felt soft, smooth, and neither dusty nor too firm in the pan. This shade applied and blended out without trouble and lasted for nine hours. NYX Peach (P, $5.00) is brighter (95% similar). Sephora Flirt It Up (06) (P, $14.00) is brighter, warmer (95% similar). MAC Fleur Power (P, $22.00) is warmer (95% similar). Estee Lauder Pink Ingenue (P, $34.00) is lighter (95% similar). The Estee Edit Purr Pink (03) (P, $28.00) is more muted (95% similar). Mod is a brightened, medium peachy-coral with warm undertones and a satin finish. The blush was richly pigmented and applied true-to-color on my skin. It had a soft, smooth consistency, and wasn’t dusty or powdery. This shade lasted for just over eight and a half hours on me. MAC Sideshow You (LE, $22.00) is lighter (95% similar). NYX Apricot (P, $5.00) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty The Afternooner (Blush) (LE) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). Colour Pop Ex (LE, $5.00) is darker (95% similar). Tarte Color Vibes Eyeshadow Palette

Tarte Color Vibes Eyeshadow Palette
Tarte Color Vibes Eyeshadow Palette

Tarte Color Vibes Eyeshadow Palette ($46.00 for 1.32 oz.) includes 20 eyeshadows arranged into four combinations. I like how they separated the colors, as it gives you a good idea of how to start pairing colors together, but if you want to go rogue, there’s nothing stopping you either! It’s a mixed bag; some shades are nice, some shades are difficult to work with, and the rest are somewhere in the middle. I like that there’s a mix of warmer and cool(er) shades, and there is a nice mix of finishes and depths, so you can get a variety of looks out of the palette. I also liked that this was a much slimmer palette compared to Tarte’s other holiday offerings, which are housed in bulky containers, so this would work better for traveling and take up less room when stored. I wish, though, that the quality was more consistent. The formula felt a little less smooth and silky compared to the brand’s permanent palettes (like Tartelette) but was also less dusty/powdery, though I had similar issues with the colors fading faster than average.

Pixel is a light peachy beige with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, lightly dusty texture that was blendable and applied well to bare skin. It wore well for seven hours for me. MAC Pretty (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Sellout (P, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). theBalm Promiscuous Pearl (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Guerlain Les Precieux #2 (LE) is lighter (95% similar). LORAC Tails & Top Hats #6 (LE, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). Maybelline Pure Nude (80) (LE, $6.99) is cooler (95% similar). LORAC Dream Girl #10 (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky #2 (P) is more shimmery (95% similar). LORAC Tulle (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Cle de Peau Stardust #1 (P) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (90% similar). Make Up For Ever S522 Pinky Nude (P, $21.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Anastasia Vermeer (P, $12.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Champagne Bubble Bath (LE) is warmer (90% similar). Chanel Seduction #2 (LE) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Dior Ambre Nuit #3 (LE) is lighter (90% similar). LORAC Nude (P, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Make Up For Ever I526 Pearl Beige (P, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). The Estee Edit 1st Light (LE) is warmer (90% similar). IT Cosmetics Transforming Pearl (P) is less shimmery (90% similar). The Estee Edit Riff (LE) is darker (85% similar). Love Hue is a soft, light-medium brown with warm, orange undertones and a mostly matte finish, though there is a dusting of silvery sparkle, but it doesn’t bind with the base, so it has little impact on the finish.
