Tarina Tarantino Emerald Pretty Eyeshadow Palette
Tarina Tarantino Emerald Pretty Eyeshadow Palette

Tarina Tarantino Emerald Pretty Eyeshadow Palette ($36.00 for 0.54 oz.) consists of six full-sized eyeshadows inspired by The Emerald City. They include: Glinda’s Kiss (iridescent white), Silver Shoes (pearlized silver), Dandy Lion (pearlized olive green), Saw Dust Heart (matte deep brown), Ozma (pearlized aqua blue), and Very Wicked (pearlized emerald green).

Glinda’s Kiss is a pale white with a white gold sheen. It has great color payoff, but it is a shade that is dupeable–and Tarina Tarantino has already put similar shades in a few of her palettes. Bare Escentuals One Hit Wonder is creamier, less frosted, slightly yellower. Tarina Tarantino Delightful and Tarina Tarantino Dreamy are more frosted, less metallic, subtler yellowness. MAC Manila Paper much yellower. MAC Nylon is yellower. Bare Escentuals Breathtaking is very similar, slightly less white. Urban Decay Zephyr is less yellow-toned.

Silver Shoes is a dark charcoal gray with a frosted shimmer-sheen. It has excellent pigmentation and a soft, smooth texture. Maybelline Audacious Asphalt is very similar though in a cream form. Tarina Tarantino Lovely has a pretty similar gray shade. Bobbi Brown Gunmetal is slightly darker and bluer-toned. Urban Decay Gunmetal is bluer-toned. theBalm Inspirational is also similar but bluer-toned.

Dandy Lion is a deep olive green with a dirty gold shimmer-sheen. It has intense color payoff and a really soft, smooth texture. Dior Garden Pastels has a lighter, more green shade. Tarina Tarantino Wonderful has a much darker, more cool-toned green. Wet ‘n’ Wild Earth Looks Small From Down Here has a browner, less green-toned version. MAC Sumptuous Olive is browner, less green. Inglot #433 is more golden, less green.

Saw Dust Heart is a dark burgundy chocolate brown with a matte finish. It has rich pigmentation (it applies even better on the lid). It has a similar color to NARS Ponderosa, without the shimmer. Wet ‘n’ Wild We’re Blasting Off is less brown. Wet ‘n’ Wild Comfort Zone is a little lighter and has shimmer. MAC Smut is a little darker and has shimmer.

Ozma is a blue-teal with a metallic shimmer-sheen. The color payoff is rich and intense, and the texture feels like butter. MAC Rain Drop is darker. Milani Primary Runway Eyes has a shade that’s a bit bluer. Milani Teal the Truth is more teal. theBalm Open to Offers Olwen is more frosted, less metallic, but the colors are very similar. Inglot #413 is a bit lighter.

Very Wicked is a dark brownish-green–it has this murky olive brown base with dusted forest green sheen. The pigmentation was spot on. OCC Poison is the closest dupe, though it has a much darker, blacker base color. Make Up For Ever #84 is greener.

Tarina Tarantino’s eyeshadow formula is AMAZING! — seriously one of my absolute favorites on the market and one of the more affordable formulas, too. The color payoff is excellent across the board, and the texture is buttery, dense, soft, and silky smooth. These apply as beautifully as they swatch, too. I wore Glinda’s Kiss, Dandy Lion, Ozma, and Very Wicked together to test out the wear–both with and without a primer–and after twelve hours, I didn’t have any creasing or fading either way. I applied them all dry, though her eyeshadows can be used both wet and dry.

Now, there is one glaring downside to this product, and it bothered me from the moment I opened up the palette: the size is unnecessarily large. There is a lot of wasted space in this palette, and while it’s slim, it’s still obnoxiously large. I was bummed about the packaging, because if it had been tighter and more like her other palettes (or just smaller), this would have been an A+ product all day long. Know that the contents are A++++ and its the size of the palette that holds it back.

It’s made out of heavy-duty cardboard, so it’s not the same plastic compacts that her other eyeshadow palettes and duos have been packaged in. Cardboard has its advantages and disadvantages–it’s much, much better if you’re prone to dropping products, because the cardboard will absorb more of the impact compared to plastic. Cardboard can be tossed around more easily without causing breakage of the eyeshadows, but it will show scuffs, dents, scratches, and wear and tear around the edges while plastic compacts won’t.

P.S. — Both Sephora and the back of the palette itself list the product weight as 6 x 0.9 oz. but also as 2.5g–2.5g is actually 0.09 oz. Based on the size of the eyeshadows compared to her other palettes and the various eyeshadows on the market, 0.09 oz. makes sense. Most eyeshadows are around 0.05 oz. (like MAC and Urban Decay), so six shades at nearly double that size for $36 is a great deal.

5 Fantastic Coral-Pink Blushes

If you’re not enamored of corals as much as I am, you may lump them all together as “coral,” but there is a definite distiction between a coral-pink and a coral-orange (and to an extent, coral-red!). There are corals that pull pinker, so they appear less warm, peach, and orange on the skin tone, while there are corals that pull warmer, so they appear redder, more orange, and peachier.

  1. Tarina Tarantino Parasol — shimmering coral-pink with a champagne shimmer-sheen
  2. NARS Orgasm — classic pink base with golden sheen that translates to a pink-coral
  3. theBalm Frat Boy — coral pink with just a faint sheen
  4. MAC Posey — pink-coral cream blush
  5. Tarte Glisten — medium-dark pink base color with a golden sheen

What’s your favorite coral-pink blush?

5 Beautiful Cool-Toned Brown Eyeshadows

Cool-toned browns tend to lean just a little gray, but not gray enough to become taupe.

Tarina Tarantino Jasper/Agate Eye Dream Highlight Duo
Tarina Tarantino Jasper/Agate Eye Dream Highlight Duo

Tarina Tarantino Jasper/Agate Eye Dream Highlight Duo ($19.00 for 0.26 oz.) is described as a “soft golden beige” and “muted light fawn.” The compact doesn’t seem too large, though it’s certainly bigger than most eyeshadow duo compacts, but each eyeshadow is over twice the size of your average full-sized eyeshadow at a whopping 0.13 oz. each. I can’t envision running out of either shade in a hurry!

Jasper is a warm, yellowy beige with a frosted finish. The color payoff is good (even better on the eye, though still good in the skin swatch), and the texture is soft, smooth, and very blendable. Cle de Peau #207 is slightly pinker, less yellow. Urban Decay Skimp is less yellow, more beige. theBalm Hiii-Yaaa! is less yellow, more peach.

Agate is a light-medium brown with warm undertones and a frosted finish.  It has the same soft, smooth texture I’ve come to expect from the brand, along with good pigmentation. MAC Arena is similar but a little darker. MAC Sweet Satisfaction is similar, a little less frosted. Chanel Eclosion has a slight pink tinge to it. MAC Grain is similar in color but not frosted.

Undoubtedly, this is a straight-forward eyeshadow duo–it’s not particularly unique or inspiring, but it is extremely useful for anyone who reaches for neutrals often. I think of all duos/palettes, the neutral ones tend to be the most successful, because they’re easy to use and versatile. I absolutely love Tarina Tarantino’s eyeshadow formula–it is one of the best on the market–so having go-to neutrals with such amazing textures is worth having. It’s not a must-have if you rarely wear neutrals or have a ton already, but if there’s a gap of neutrals in your stash, this is worth checking out.  Without a base, these two wore for eight hours without creasing/fading but did have some slight fading after ten hours.  With a primer, I didn’t have any issues.

Tarina Tarantino Lovely Jewel Eyeshadow Palette
Tarina Tarantino Lovely Jewel Eyeshadow Palette

Tarina Tarantino Lovely Jewel Eyeshadow Palette ($32.00 for 0.32 oz.) is a smoky eye palette that consists mostly of grays and silvers. Tarina Tarantino’s eyeshadow formula can be used wet or dry, and each shade is supposed to have excellent pigmentation.

The shade on the left is a bright white-silver with a frosted finish. It has good color payoff, but the texture is a touch dry. MAC Filament is a bit darker and not as bright. MAC Misty is grayer.

On the top, there is a shade that’s a pale ivory with subtle warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The color payoff is decent to good, but it could be softer and smoother. MAC Dazzlelight is similar, but Chanel Prelude is closer.

The shade on the right is a charcoal gray with a shimmery sheen. This has good color payoff, but the texture is slightly drier–not quite as dense or as buttery as other shades have been in the past. Bobbi Brown Gunmetal is similar but darker. Urban Decay Gunmetal is very similar.

In the center, there is a soft beige-brown with a soft shimmer. The color payoff is good, but the texture is a touch powdery. Chanel Eclosion is darker and warmer. MAC Sweet Satisfaction is warmer. MAC Grain is similar.

The last shade, on the bottom, is a dark black with a satiny finish. It has good color payoff, and because it has more of a matte finish, it has a drier feel overall but still soft. Bare Escentuals Lights Down is slightly lighter. MAC Carbon is lighter but more matte.

It’s my least favorite palette of the ones I’ve tried by Tarina Tarantino, because of the difference in quality; these shades were less pigmented than expected with drier/powdery textures.  A great smoky eye palette is nice to have, but this one leaves something to be desired.  It’s not bad, but it’s not great, and given how nice her other palettes have been, it’s a let-down.  When I wore this to test out the wear, it wore for around eight hours without creasing without a primer, but it was slightly faded after nine hours.  With a primer, I didn’t have any wear issues.

Tarina Tarantino Fantastical Jewel Eyeshadow Palette
Tarina Tarantino Fantastical Jewel Eyeshadow Palette

Tarina Tarantino Fantastical Jewel Eyeshadow Palette ($32.00 for 0.32 oz.) is a purple-themed eyeshadow palette that features five shades. Tarina Tarantino’s eyeshadow formula can be used wet or dry, and each shade is supposed to have excellent pigmentation.

The top shade in the palette is a plummy mauve with a satiny sheen. It has more of a reflective finish than lots of shimmer, but it is not metallic. The color payoff is lovely–really soft, smooth application and opaque color. Wet ‘n’ Wild We’re Blasting Off has a similar shade that appears lighter, almost pinker. Bare Escentuals Rowdy is has less of a sheen, so it appears darker. MAC Tendersmoke is similar in color, but Tarina Tarantino’s is much more pigmented. MAC Shale is browner.

The shade on the left of the palette is a fuchsia-purple with a soft, frosted finish. The texture is soft and smooth with good color payoff. It’s purpler compared to MAC Stars ‘n Rockets and Urban Decay Fishnet. Bare Escentuals Boudoir comes the closest, but it’s pinker.

In the center, there is a creamy, pale yellow gold with a frosted finish. It’s super soft and dense–feels buttery to the touch–that has excellent color payoff. It seems like a lot of the brand’s palettes have this kind of color in them, though. Tarina Tarantino Wonderful has a similar shade that’s slightly yellower, less gold, and Dreamy has a shade that’s whiter. It’s a little warmer than MAC Femme-fi. MAC Manila Paper is slightly less warm.

On the right, the shade is a warm, light-medium brown with a frosted finish. This shade had decent color payoff, but it wasn’t as soft or as dense as the other shades in the palettes. Giorgio Armani Rock Sand is similar but more metallic in finish. Urban Decay Spotlight is darker, not as warm.

The bottom shade is a rich, purpled eggplant with red undertones and a satiny finish. The pigmentation is amazing, and the texture is really soft and smooth when applied. MAC Grape is purpler, less red in it. Bare Escentuals Nightcap is similar but more eggplant and has a matte finish. It’s slightly less red-toned and more shimmery compared to MAC Fig. 1. Inglot #446 is more frosted but similar.

While purple-hued eyeshadows tend to suffer from pigmentation and texture issues, all of the purples in this palette were splendid.  The only shade that I had trouble with was the lighter brown shade, which was decently pigmented but not as dense as the other four.  Tarina Tarantino’s eyeshadows wear around eight hours without creasing/fading (but minor creasing after ten hours) when applied over bare eyelids, and when applied over a primer, I don’t have any wear issues.

It's a really nice palette with wearable purples! The two more neutral shades work well with the three purple hues to create a look that is neutral with oomph from the purple.
