shu uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil ($67.00 for 15.2 fl. oz.) is designed for combination to oily skin types as a cleansing oil that “effectively remove[s] make-up and ipurities … while maintaining the skin’s necessary moisture level.” It is “empowered with Sakura Complex” to “[minimize] pores by eliminating excess sebum and visibly [smoothe] the skin’s surface.” According to shu uemura, sakura leaf extract is “known to reduce inflammatory mediators that can cause skin redness” and “improve skin texture.” It also contains salicyclic acid and cherry extract. It is available year-round in a regularly pink-tinted bottle but has been relased in special packaging for the ob collection. It’s sold out (in this packaging) online, but if you are located where shu uemura is still sold in stores, you may find it locally.

I’m a big fan of shu uemura’s Cleansing Oils, and I hadn’t tried the Fresh Pore Clarifying formula yet. The last bottle I used was a limited edition bottle released with last holiday season’s wkw collection, which was the “White Recovery EX+ Brightening Cleansing Oil Advanced Formula” (which doesn’t seem to be available in regular packaging on the U.S. website). One giant bottle lasts me anywhere from four to six months. I didn’t love this one as much as the other formulas I’ve tried, because it is very thin–almost water-like in texture. The others were slightly thicker but not so thick that they felt oily or heavy, but this one is so thin that it took some getting used to. I needed to pump it into my hands over the sink, as it would leak through my fingers or pump beyond my hands and get onto the counter/in the sink. I just never noticed this as an issue with the two or three bottles I’ve used previously (different formulas, all cleansing oils). The formula has a very light floral scent that’s pretty muted.

Aside from the consistency/packaging issue, the formula worked well to break down and remove makeup, dirt, and whatever else happened to be on my face. I take two to three pumps and then massage and work it into my skin, and then I rinse my hands under water and then work the oil into a small lather. After that, I rinse my face with lukewarm water and pat dry. I never experience any oily residue, no squeaky clean/tight feeling, or have issues with my eyes clouding during the rinsing process. shu’s cleansing oils are definitely a go-to for me when I’m wearing a full face of makeup, because it gets it all off and I don’t need to follow-up with another cleanser.

shu uemura OB Dream Orange Rouge Unlimited Supreme Shine ($30.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a softened orange with warm, peach and tangerine shimmer and a glossy finish. Clarins Sunset Rouge is a bit darker, less opaque. Chanel Sari Dore is a bit brighter, redder in tone. Guerlain Orange Euphorique is also redder in tone. I think Chanel La Pausa comes the closest–if you applied gloss over it.

For as creamy and lightweight as this feels and as glossy as this looks, it was very pigmented. It covered most of my natural lip color with just a hint of translucency. The texture is slick and creamy, but it has a tendency to settle somewhat into lip lines. This formula is supposed to have “high color pay-off” with a “double moisture system for supreme moisture.” They nailed the color payoff, and it’s an incredibly rich and hydrating lipstick. It actually felt more like a thin gloss applied but with the color more expected of a lipstick. The only downside was the wear time was two and a half hours, which is shy of my average of four with lipstick, as this slips around more.

Olive Green Eyeliners: Your Guide

You might think that the color I have the most shades for is olive green, but you would be wrong, even though there are quite a few! The nice thing here is that we have more than a few dupes/similarities. I like that, because then you can select based on what formula works best for you and still get the shade you want.

1. MAC Black Karat is a brownish-black with an olive-brown tone and gold shimmer. (LE)
2. MAC Black Line is a black with brown undertones and an olive green shimmer. (LE)
3. MAC Buried Treasure is a cool-toned brown with olive green shimmer. It is a little darker than MAC Uniform.
4. MAC Rosemary & Thyme is a light-medium olive green with green shimmer. It is similar to MUFE #5L (darker) and shu uemura ME Khaki 09 (less sparkle).
5. MAC Uniform is a cool-toned brown with olive gold shimmer. It is slightly lighter than MAC Buried Treasure.
6. Make Up For Ever #5L is an olive green with a soft sheen. It is a touch darker than MAC Rosemary & Thyme and shu uemura ME Khaki 09.
7. Stila Moray is a darkened olive green with an olive brown shimmer/sheen. It is a bit greener compared to UD Stash but not as green as bareMinerals 10AM.
8. shu uemura ME Khaki 09 is a warm olive green with brown undertones. It is a touch darker than MAC Rosemary & Thyme but lighter than MUFE #5L.
9. Urban Decay Stash is a darkened olive green with a subtle sheen. It is browner than Stila Moray and bareMinerals 10AM.
10. bareMinerals 10AM is an olive green with strong green pigmentation compared to the other shades here. It is greener than Stila Moray, UD Stash, and TT Sparkling Ammunition.
11. Tarina Tarantino Sparkling Ammunition is a darkened olive green with subtle shimmer. It is a bit lighter than Stila Moray but greener than UD Stash and browner than bareMinerals 10AM.
12. Chanel Khaki Dore is a warm-toned, olive brown with gold sheen.
13. Shiseido Black Sand is a green-tinged black with gold shimmer.
14. Bobbi Brown Hunter is a green-tinged black–against all these other eyeliners, it is so, so dark.
15. Dolce & Gabbana Stromboli is a deep black with olive shimmer.

Try a Shimmering Eggplant Eyeliner with a Neutral Eye

shu uemura Blackish Satin Purple Painting Liner ($25.00 for 0.098 oz.) is a darkened eggplant purple with very fine purple and burgundy micro-shimmer. In pencil form, Urban Decay Crash and Urban Decay Rockstar are both similar. Bobbi Brown Black Plum is a bit darker. Maybelline Plum is a dead-on dupe.

It’s creamy and has good pigmentation, so a single pass of product (I used MAC’s 208 brush to apply) yielded mostly opaque color coverage without skipping or tugging.  When I tested it, the shade lasted eight hours without fading or migrating. It might seem a little intimidating, because it does have red in it, but there’s a lot of purple, some darkness, and that faint shimmer that makes it easier to wear than other red-toned purples.  I think it works particularly well with neutral eyes or to accent gold or copper eyeshadows.

Karl for Shu – The Smoky Velvet Palette

shu uemura Smoky Velvet Eye & Cheek Palette ($65.00 for 0.245 oz.) consists of two silky smooth eyeshadows, three pressed eyeshadows, and one glow-on blush.

1 is described as a “glitter black” and comes in the “silky smooth eyeshadow formula.” It’s a soft black with very small silver glitter particles. It had a creamy but a very thin consistency–it was soft and just barely creamy, enough that it felt more like a really thin, cream eyeshadow than a powder one. It had good color payoff despite the thin consistency. MAC Tall, Dark, & Handsome is a bit softer, less glittery. Buxom Black Lab is similar but has multi-colored sparkle.

2 is described as a “deep khaki” and comes in the “silky smooth eyeshadow formula.” It’s an olive green with a soft, olive shimmer. This shade was creamier than #1, but it had a similar lightweight and thin feel. L’Oreal Golden Emerald is darker, greener. Lancome Designer is darker. MAC Sumptuous Olive is warmer, browner.

3 is described as an “elegant light silver” and is part of the “pressed eyeshadow formula.” It’s a sparkling silver-tinged white with a glittery, sparkly content that gives it a very sheer appearance. Cinderella Midnight Hour is less metallic. MAC She’s Got Class is similar both in color and texture. MAC Forgery is also quite similar.

4 is described as an “mint green” and is part of the “pressed eyeshadow formula.” It’s a pale green with soft yellow undertones and a smattering of gold micro-shimmer. It had good color payoff and a soft, finely-milled texture. Cinderella Cinderelly is darker. Too Faced Fantasy Island is yellower. bareMinerals Wicked is also yellower. Tarina Tarantino Wonderful is very similar.

5 is described as an “glitter beige” and is part of the “pressed eyeshadow formula.” It’s a pale, yellow gold with a metallic sheen. The color payoff was so-so. Buxom Poodle is less yellow. Giorgio Armani #18 is similar, less metallic. Bobbi Brown Gold is yellower. MAC Treasure Hunt is similar but has more of a sheen.

6 is described as an “dusty rose” and is part of the “glow-on blush formula.” It’s a brightened, dark pink with gold shimmer. It packs plenty of pigment, so it can be used on all skin tones. The texture is incredibly finely-milled, so it is extremely blendable on the skin, so even pale complexions will be able to adjust the intensity to their liking. MAC Supernova is a bit redder. Tom Ford Wicked is pinker, more blue-based. Worth noting is it’s a pain to apply as a blush, since the pan is the size of an eyeshadow.

The palette is remarkable for its texture; the two cream eyeshadows had a beautiful, velvety-creamy consistency that felt like butter and silk came together, while the blush was finely-milled and easy to blend, despite its rich color.  The really sparkly white eyeshadow, though, while soft, did not apply as smoothly. I found it was best applied as a layering shade over another eyeshadow.  I experienced some fall out when applied alone, and significantly less (but still a little) fall out when patted over one of the cream eyeshadows. Shu can do incredible glitter eyeshadows sometimes, but the white in this palette wasn’t quite it. The gold shade was way, way less sparkly (and better bound together), so I didn’t have problems with that shade.  The cream eyeshadows wore well for six hours, but after eight full hours, they was some faint creasing.  The blush lasted eight hours without fading.

	The fall out from the two glittery shades along with the faint (but still there) creasing from the two creamier shades really hurt this palette overall. I'm still amazed by the textures of the products, but I wish the wear was better.

Something Beige and Coral for the Holidays

shu uemura Celebrity Beige Rouge Unlimited Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a warm-toned, light-medium orange with a soft beige tint. It has a glossy finish and subtle shimmer running through it. Burberry Devon Sunset is pinker. Bobbi Brown Guava is similar, slightly more muted. MAC Jazzed is lighter. MAC In a Heartbeat is noticeably lighter.

The Rouge Unlimited formula is supposed to have “rich moisture and long lasting comfort” with “high color payoff and fidelity.” It has such a slick consistency–like a lipstick-lipgloss hybrid–yet delivers nearly opaque color coverage. There’s a subtle translucency that keeps it from looking too thick or heavy. The creaminess enables it to apply to glide on effortlessly, and it is a very hydrating formula. It doesn’t last longer than three hours on my lips (an hour shy of my typical four-hour average), which wasn’t completely unexpected, given the slickness of the formula. It’s lightweight, though, and it is comfortable to wear.
