NARS Fall 2012 Collection

NARS Fall 2012 Collection

Designed by founder and Creative Director François Nars, the Fall 2012 Color Collection features a blend of bold, modern shades and celestial shimmers. For the campaign, Nars chose to photograph iconic ‘90s supermodel Kristen McMenamy. Having worked with Kristen in the past and for his first book, “X-Ray,” he felt that her beautiful, often otherworldly look completely epitomized the fall collection.

To achieve the makeup look featured in the campaign image, Kristen’s skin was perfected with Siberia Sheer Matte Foundation and set with Snow Loose Powder to create an immaculate complexion. Next, the Undress Me Multiple was applied to the hollows of the cheeks and blended toward the temples with fingertips.

Kristen’s top and bottom lashes were thickly lined in Black Moon Eyeliner Pencil. Next, the entire lid was colored in with the pencil in a half moon shape, from the lash line to the base of the brow bone and out towards the temple. The pencil color was then blended with a fingertip to create a smooth base. Next, the iridescent amethyst shade of High Society Trio Eyeshadow was applied to the lid and the color extended to the brow bone and towards the outer corner of the brow. The edge of this shade was blended into the lavender shade of High Society Trio Eyeshadow, then both sides of Vent Glacé Duo Eyeshadow were combined and applied to the lower lash line atop Black Moon. The eyes were lined with Via Veneto Larger Than Life® Long-Wear Eyeliner and finished with two coats of Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara.

Kristen’s lips were lined and filled in with cinnamon Papua Lip Liner Pencil, blended for a softer effect, and topped with Belize Lip Gloss. Storm Bird Nail Polish on nails completed the look.

Too Faced Neptune Eyeshadow

Too Faced Neptune Eyeshadow ($16.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as “aqua.” It’s a green-teal with subtle yellow undertones and a frosted, metallic finish. Buxom Saint Bernard is greener. MAC Shimmermoss is similar but has a more frosted finish. Urban Decay Minx is very similar but has a bit of sparkle/glitter. Giorgio Armani Ecailles is similar but less vibrant.

L’Oreal Liquid Diamond Infallible Eyeshadow

L’Oreal Liquid Diamond Infallible Eyeshadow ($7.95 for 0.12 oz.) silvery-gray with a purple tint and a frosted finish. When it’s dry, it’s rather sheer, and when you apply it wet, the finish becomes more metallic and the color payoff is much improved. MAC Hold That Pose! is browner. Guerlain Les Ombres de Nuit is less metallic, browner. MAC Idol Eyes is somewhat similar, but the payoff is so terrible, it’s hard to be sure! What I liked about this shade was that it doesn’t seem to be readily dupeable (at least nothing I could think of). It’s a much more nuanced shade than much of the rest of the color range.

NARS Creates the Looks for Don Giovanni

NARS Creates the Looks for Don Giovanni

James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics collaborated with designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte who custom designed all of the costumes for this production to create the beauty looks for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s production of the famed opera Don Giovanni, which opened Friday, May 18th.

The renowned Gustavo Dudamel conducts the opera, and architect Frank Gehry designed the set at the landmarked Walt Disney Concert Hall, a building of his own design.

“The makeup is abstracted but rooted in classical theatre,” said James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics who created the exclusive looks for the eight principle characters and 24 member choir. “Everything about the space – both on stage and in the concert hall’s structure – is about angled planes, no straight walls. So I created a facial architecture as a base, letting the characters drive each look. We chose a stony palette and strong lip color for each of the female leads.

NARS gave us a great platform of color and texture to leap off of onto the stage. It’s totally different than fashion work.”

“Working with NARS and makeup artist James Kaliardos for Don Giovanni has been an exciting collaboration,” said Laura and Kate Mulleavy. “The brand’s depth of products and line of colors, in addition to James’ talent, has helped bring our vision to life!”
