NYX Narcissistic & Chaotic Illuminators

NYX Narcissistic Illuminator
NYX Narcissistic Illuminator

NYX Narcissistic Illuminator ($9.00 for 0.33 oz.) is a light, golden peach with warm undertones and a luminous sheen. It had a soft, lightly powdery consistency that was blendable and didn’t read dry or powdery on the skin. The powder imparted a soft but noticeable glow to the skin without adding a lot of color on my skin tone (but fairer complexions may see more warmth). It wore well for seven hours on me. Suqqu Yawakouki (05) (P, $34.00) is darker, less shimmery (95% similar). NARS Tribulation (LE, $30.00) is darker (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Warm (Winter 2016) Highlighter (LE, $60.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Highlighter (LE, $32.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Clinique Nude Glow (P, $27.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer (P, $24.00) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Tarte Lit (P) is more shimmery (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NYX Chaotic Illuminator ($9.00 for 0.33 oz.) is a light-medium pink with warm undertones and a golden shimmer and sparkle. The texture was looser–noticeably drier–and a little powdery to work with. The shimmer was stronger in this shade than in Narcissistic as well. It worked more as a highlighting blush on my skin tone, and it may be more or less a blush or highlighter depending on your own skin tone. It just barely emphasized pores on my cheeks. The highlighter started to fade after seven hours of wear. Benefit CORALista (P, $28.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Smashbox Carnation (LE) is cooler (90% similar). YSL Passionnee (6) (P, $47.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced Peachy Keen (LE) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced Who's Your Poppy (LE) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Tarte Glisten (P, $28.00) is darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Score (P, $26.00) is warmer, darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Tarina Tarantino Feather (P, $25.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Becca Flowerchild (P, $32.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Milani Dolce Pink (P, $8.49) is more muted, darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP Rose Gold (P, $6.99) is brighter, darker, more shimmery (90% similar). NARS Orgasm (P, $30.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA SUMMARY | NYX Illuminator ($9.00 for 0.33 oz.) is supposed to have “radiant shimmer” that gives skin a “subtle glow.” Most of the shades in the range (there are five) are moderately shimmery/frosty; only one is on the truly subtle side. The texture tended to be on the drier side, though I didn’t find them to appear dry on my skin (which is normal-to-dry). There is slight emphasis of pores, and the wear time varies from six to seven hours.

5 Shades of Serenity

Here’s the second shade chosen for Color of the Year, “Serenity.” It’ll be interesting to see this color incorporated into just about every mainstream brand’s releases in 2016, because it’s a difficult color to do well. Pastels in general can be tricky, and shades of this kind of periwinkle blue are no different. Anyone else hoping for an interpretation of this as a highlighter? Like an iridescent bluish sheen? Please?

  1. Colour Pop Prance — A Cool Blue with a Matte finish.
  2. NYX Earl Grey — A Cool Blue with a Satin finish.
  3. Make Up For Ever I212 Periwinkle — A Cool Blue with a Satin finish.
  4. Zoya Skylar — A Cool Blue with a Frost finish.
  5. Inglot #429 — A Cool Blue with a Frost finish.

5 Shades of Rose Quartz

Not one but two shades were selected as “Color of the Year” by Pantone for 2016. Their decision of choosing two hues, a pastel blue and pink, commonly associated as gender-specific colors, was explained as, “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.” That’s what I like to hear! Here are five existing shades that line-up with the concept of Rose Quartz, which is a “warmer embracing rose tone.”

  1. Buxom Feather Boa — A Warm Pink with a Matte finish.
  2. NYX French Kiss — A Warm Pink with a Natural finish.
  3. Estee Lauder Desirable — A Warm Pink with a Natural finish.
  4. Zoya Rue — A Neutral Pink with a Cream finish.
  5. Inglot #356 — A Warm Pink with a Matte finish.

NYX Deep Plum HD Blush

NYX Deep Plum HD Blush
NYX Deep Plum HD Blush

NYX Deep Plum HD Blush ($6.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark rosy copper with warm undertones and a satin finish. NARS Lovejoy (P, $30.00) is cooler, darker (90% similar). NYX Bronzed (P, $6.50) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). MAC Scene to Be Seen (Inner) (LE, $32.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). bareMinerals The Indecent Proposal (P, $22.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Make You Mine (P, $23.50) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). NARS Fervor (Right) (P) is warmer (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Contour (Softcore) (LE, $60.00) is cooler, brighter, lighter (85% similar). Tarte Unearthed (LE, $28.00) is lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Stylish Me (LE, $22.00) is warmer (85% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Marsala (LE) is warmer, brighter (85% similar). Lancome Rosegold Lights (P, $30.00) is cooler, more muted, lighter (80% similar). Clinique Fig Pop (P, $21.00) is warmer, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

It’s an interesting shade, as it takes on a more plum-like colorinmg when applied heavily, but as it is blended and sheered out, the warmer, coppery tones come through. The finish also becomes more luminous the more the powder is buffed into the skin, but it is never too much so it doesn’t emphasize pores or the skin’s natural texture. It was nicely pigmented with a lightly dusty consistency, but it was very soft and easily blended on the skin. This shade wore well for eight hours on me before fading.

FORMULA SUMMARY | NYX’s newest blush formula is supposed to be a “high definition, lightweight blush that blends evenly” that is “vibrant and silky.” The texture tended to be on the more powdery side, but it sits well and doesn’t look powdery applied. Many shades have a more luminous finish to them where the shimmer is fine enough to create a glow, rather than a frosted finish (though a couple are quite shimmery). The formula blends fairly easily on the skin and has medium, buildable coverage with some being very pigmented right off the bat. The wear time is between seven and eight hours.

It’s so nice when you find a budget-friendly product that really performs well! That is the case with Electro. It was richly pigmented paired with a soft, smooth consistency that was easily blended out along the edges for a diffused application. If you prefer subtler blush, I’d recommend using a fan brush or duo-fiber brush, which will allow you to apply less product, and a lighter hand, as a little does go a long way. On me, the blush wore well for eight hours before fading along the edges.

This was one of the more shimmery shades in the HD Blush round-up that I’ve tried so far. It’s definitely not frosted, though, and it has a very luminous sheen on the skin as the shimmer is fine. The blush was richly pigmented with a soft, silky texture that applied well to the skin and blended out with ease. It was just a smidgen powdery, but it was so much better than a lot of the other shades in the range! When I tested it, the color stayed on well for eight hours before fading.
