NYX Apple Crisp Intense Butter Gloss
NYX Apple Crisp Intense Butter Gloss

NYX Apple Crisp Intense Butter Gloss ($5.99 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is a bold, bright, medium red with cool, blue undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage that applied smoothly and evenly without pulling into lip lines. The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, but it is heavier than the original formula of Butter Glosses. It developes light tackiness over time and lasts four hours on me. It was neither drying nor hydrating over time. There is a faint smell of vanilla but no discernible taste, but the scent seemed off in some way to me. MAC Victoriana (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Opera (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Ruby Woo (LE, $15.00) is similar. Guerlain Rouge Parade (920) (LE, $30.00) is more muted. MAC RiRi Woo (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Driven by Love (P, $19.50) MAC Russian Red (P, $15.00) is darker. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

NYX Banana Split Intense Butter Gloss ($5.99 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is a brightened, light-medium peach-orange with warm undertones and a creamy, high-shine finish. While it had nearly full color coverage, the thicker consistency seemed to make very prone to settling into lip lines from the get-go. Even when I would try to smooth out the color, the color would sink right back into those lip lines. The gloss lasted for four hours, and the settling just worsened as I wore it. MAC Grand Pumpkin (LE, $15.00) is sheerer, darker. MAC Live It Up (LE, $15.00) is lighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty Gypsy (204) (P, $28.00) is darker. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

NYX Berry Strudel Intense Butter Gloss ($5.99 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is a brightened, violet purple with a hint of pink and fairly cool undertones. It had a creamy, glossy finish. The texture was thinner, so it felt more like the original formula, but it was prone to streaking. It was really hard to get the color to look even, and as it wore away, it settled into lip lines. The gloss wore well for four hours on me. It’s a cool color, and it is hard to dupe, so it might be worth the extra effort to make it work if you really have been wanting a purple lipgloss. NYX Violet (P, $6.00) is lighter and a lipstick, so it isn’t as glossy. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Rollergirl (P, $18.00) is lighter and a lipstick, and again, lacks that glossy finish. Illamasqua Fierce (P, $22.00) is lighter. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Belladonna (DC, $18.00) is darker, cooler-toned. Get comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

NYX High Voltage Lipstick
NYX High Voltage Lipstick

NYX Playdate High Voltage Lipstick ($5.99 for 0.09 oz.) is a muted, light-medium lavender with a gray overcast and a satiny sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied evenly for the most part. The consistency had some slip in it, so it was easy to apply and felt comfortable on. The color wore well for four hours but pulled into lip lines slightly after two and a half hours of wear. It was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Weekend 2 (LE, $16.00) is lighter, brighter. MAC Lavender Jade (LE, $16.00) is brighter. Colour Pop Brills (P, $5.00) is lighter, more matte. NARS Dominique (P, $32.00) is pinker. MAC Dodgy Girl (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Illamasqua Posture (P, $24.00) is lighter. MAC Nocturnal Instincts (LE, $16.00) is pinker. MAC Fresh Amour (LE, $16.00) is brighter, cooler-toned, lighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

NYX Privileged High Voltage Lipstick ($5.99 for 0.09 oz.) is a bright pop of light-medium pink with cool, blue undertones and a light shine. It had rich, opaque color payoff in a single pass with a lightly creamy, slightly slippery consistency that glides on easily but has a thicker consistency (not thick per se, just thicker). This shade stayed on well for four and a half hours and left a stain behind. It wasn’t hydrating nor was it moisturizing, but it was comfortable to wear. It’s a very dupable shade of bright pink with the only differentiating factors being that it’s not the most neon, but it’s still on the lighter side. Maybelline Orchid Ecstasy (730) (P, $7.49) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Pablo (LE, $32.00) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Jack (LE, $32.00) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Justin (LE, $32.00) is darker, more shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Preston (LE, $32.00) is lighter. MAC Femme-de-Luxe (P, $23.00) is more matte. MAC Boutique Pink (LE, $22.00) is more matte. Marc Jacobs Beauty Pop-arazzi (606) (P, $28.00) is very similar. MAC Lust Extract (LE, $17.00) is darker. Givenchy Rose Perfecto (209) (P, $36.00) is a smidgen darker. MAC Kelly Yum-Yum (LE, $16.00) is similar. Sephora Collection Cougar (P, $12.50) is brighter. MAC Happy-Go-Lucky (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned. Illamasqua Luster (P, $26.00) is lighter. MAC Bold Spring (P, $22.00) is sheerer, darker. Bite Beauty Moscato (P, $28.00) is brighter. Bite Beauty Satsuma (LE, $24.00) is brighter. Chanel La Diva (44) (P, $34.00) is brighter, cooler-toned. NARS Goodbye Emmanuelle (LE, $26.00) is lwarmer. NARS Full Frontal (LE, $26.00) is darker. MAC Playtime (LE, $17.00) is more shimmery. Marc Jacobs Beauty Happy Ending (116) (P, $30.00) is similar. Maybelline Electric Fuchsia (LE, $7.49) is darker, cooler-toned. MAC Outrageously Fun (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

NYX Twisted High Voltage Lipstick ($5.99 for 0.09 oz.) is a brightened, light-medium orchid purple with some pink and a satiny sheen. It had mostly opaque color coverage that went on evenly and deposited smooth color. The consistency is lightly creamy with some slip so it glides on easily. It wore well for four hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. Colour Pop Grind (P, $5.00) is darker, more matte. Kat Von D L.U.V. (P, $19.00) is pinker, more matte. NYX Violet (P, $6.00) is cooler-toned. Kat Von D L.U.V. (P, $21.00) is darker, more matte. Too Faced Melted Violet (P, $21.00) is lighter, pinker. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Rollergirl (P, $18.00) is cooler-toned. MAC RiRi Boy (LE, $16.00) is lighter, more matte. MAC Up the Amp (P, $16.00) is pinker, more matte. Do you rock lavender lipstick? I love the color but must admit that it’s not my favorite on me, so I tend to forget about how pretty it is until spring hits and all I hear about are pastels. Something like NARS Dominique is a really wearable way to wear lavender without it being too pastel or bright, whereas NYX Violet is a great option for almost-lavender but not a true lavender since it is brighter and has stronger purple tones to it. What are your favorite lavenders? What kind of eye/cheek do you pair with them?

  1. OCC Digitalis — a pink-lavender cream
  2. ColourPop Brills — a satiny lavender with a hint of pink
  3. NARS Dominique — a muted, lavender pink
  4. NYX Castle — a gold-shimmered lavender pink
  5. NYX Violet — a brightened, lavender purple

NYX Beach Babe HD Blush
NYX Beach Babe HD Blush

NYX Beach Babe HD Blush ($6.50 for 0.16 oz.) is a brightened, gold-shimmered brown with warm, reddish-yellow undertones and a frosted finish. Bobbi Brown Bronze (LE, $45.00) is less red. Urban Decay Strip Bronzer (P) is slightly darker. Too Faced Sun Bunny #2 (P) is lighter. Too Faced Sun Bunny #1 (P) is darker. Disney by Sephora Golden Sands (LE, $55.00) is darker. MAC Global Glow (P, $30.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It was nicely pigmented with color that could be applied at true-to-pan intensity. The texture was soft with a fairly silky feel that didn’t get too powdery–the least powdery shade I’ve tested so far from the new HD range–that blended easily on the skin. I also found that despite seeming rather shimmery when swatched, the finish is softer and more luminous than a true frost on the skin. It seemed to buff and diffuse especially well in practice. When I wore this blush (or bronzer), it stayed on well for seven and a half hours before fading.

NYX Soft Spoken HD Blush
NYX Soft Spoken HD Blush

NYX Soft Spoken HD Blush ($6.50 for 0.16 oz.) is a soft, light peach with a hintr of pink and a golden shimmer-sheen. Dior Peach Splendor (LE, $44.00) is less shimmery. Sephora + Pantone Universe Coral Pink (LE) is less shimmery. Chanel Caresse (180) (LE, $45.00) is darker. Benefit CORALista (Palette) (P, $28.00) is more shimmery . Too Faced Papa Don’t Peach (LE) is darker, more shimmery. Surratt Beauty Duchesse (P, $32.00) is lighter. MAC New Romance (P, $27.00) is slightly darker. Makeup Geek Honeymoon (P, $9.99) is pinker. bareMinerals The Many Splendors #2 (LE) is more shimmery. MAC Adored (LE, $30.00) is darker. MAC Amber Glow (LE, $27.00) is less pink. Benefit Sugarbomb (P, $28.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

This is a blush that will naturally suit lighter skin tones the best as a result of being on the lighter end of the spectrum, as it will show up as more of a highlighter on medium and deeper skin tones (as it does on me). The powder was soft, smooth, and powdery, though it didn’t feel chalky. It had semi-opaque color payoff that was buildable to a degree, but it tended to soften more readily than it did intensify to opaque color. The finish is luminous without being too frosted, so it didn’t emphasize pores or the skin’s natural texture, and despite the powderiness, it didn’t look that way on the skin. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading on me.

NYX Taupe HD Blush
NYX Taupe HD Blush

NYX Taupe HD Blush ($6.50 for 0.16 oz.) is a medium-dark, taupe brown with subtle warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. Kat Von D Sombre (P) is very similar but slightly warmer. MAC Next to Skin (LE, $21.00) is lighter. Inglot #504 (P, $15.00) is cooler-toned. NYX Taupe (P, $5.00) is rosier. NARS Douceur (P, $29.00) is warmer, more shimmery, lighter. MAC Taupe Shape ($21.00) is more shimmery. Chanel Notorious (LE, $45.00) is darker, cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NYX’s newest blush formula is supposed to be a “high definition, lightweight blush that blends evenly” that is “vibrant and silky.” The consistency of the powder is definitely very soft, but it is quite powdery and kicks up a lot of excess in the pan. Luckily, it doesn’t look powdery on the skin and blended out easily. The color payoff was more semi-sheer to semi-opaque with some buildability, but this particular shade wasn’t intensely pigmented. This seemed even cooler-toned compared to the regular Powder Blush version of Taupe, which may make it an even more suitable contouring shade for fair to medium-dark skin tones, but I wish it wasn’t quite so thin in texture. It also contains slightly more product (0.16 oz. vs. 0.14 oz. but costs $1.50 more) and doesn’t have talc as an ingredient. On me, it lasted for seven and a half hours before fading.

As a note, this product seems potentially extra fragile, as I received three of the blushes I ordered from ULTA completely shattered, and several readers had similar stories–but more worrying was that some readers experienced blushes breaking in their bags on the way home. That being said, I ordered a dozen or so from NYX directly and none of them arrived broken.
