NARS Hyde Park Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Hyde Park Satin Lip Pencil
NARS Hyde Park Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Hyde Park Satin Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as “cardinal red.” It’s a deeper red with mostly neutral undertones–it looks a bit berry-ish–and a satin finish. MAC Fire Sign is warmer. Guerlain Pour Troubler is cooler-toned, more berry-hued. Shiseido Sweet Pea is warmer. NARS Flamenco is more muted. Dior Technicolor Red is similar but has shimmer.

While many shades in the range are screaming with pigment, this one was actually a bit translucent; there’s a hinto f my lip freckle that still comes through. Hyde Park looked a bit like a lip stain/lipstick hybrid. It lasted four and a half hours well on me, and then a noticeable stain lingered for the next hour or so. The color did settle into lip lines somewhat after four hours of wear. It was neither hydrating nor moisturizing while I wore it.

NARS Isola Bella Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Isola Bella Satin Lip Pencil
NARS Isola Bella Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Isola Bella Satin Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as “peach beige.” It’s a warmed-up, medium peachy-brown with a satin finish. It is reminiscent of NARS Biscayne Park, which is lighter and not as warm-toned. MAC Posh Tone is more beige. MAC Delectable is very similar. Bobbi Brown Soft Coral is darker and warmer.

It has decadent, rich color–full color coverage–and it just takes minimal amount of product. One even layer seems to cover everything, and it ensures that the lip color never looks heavy when worn. The texture feels creamy, almost wet, when you apply it, but it doesn’t have much slip once on. It stays on nicely, and Isola Bella wore five hours when I tested it. It was lightly hydrating over the time I wore it, and it didn’t cling.

NARS Jardin des Plantes Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Jardin des Plantes Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Jardin des Plantes Satin Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as “fuchsia.” It’s a red-toend fuchsia pink with a soft, frosted finish and a satiny sheen. It has cool, blue undertones. Guerlain Girly is a smidgen redder and has no frosted shimmer. OCC Queen is all cream in finish. NARS Carthage is cooler-toned, pinker. Guerlain Champs-Elysees is similar but less shimmer. Estee Lauder Wild Violet is darker. MAC Insanely It has a glossier sheen. NARS Funny Face is very similar–perhaps a little more frost. MAC Full Fuchsia is slightly less red. Beautiful color, undoubtedly, though a shade that many brands have, so you may want to check your stash!

It’s a rich, vibrant color that goes on with full color coverage with little product. The consistency is lightly creamy but not thick that glides on easily without pulling or tugging on the lips. It’s easy to maneuver the color around the edges, too, because it delivers so much color in a single pass.  Jardin des Plantes wore for an impressive six hours on me, and it did leave behind a stain for another hour.  It was neither hydrating nor moisturizing, though, and that is one aspect of the product that did not deliver.

NARS Biscayne Park Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Biscayne Park Satin Lip Pencil
NARS Biscayne Park Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Biscayne Park Satin Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “pink guava.” It’s a warm, light-medium peach with brown and pink. It looks lighter applied to lips than it does just swatched on the skin–I triple-checked this bad boy, because it wasn’t computing for me! MAC Cozy Up is more orange. MAC Posh Tone is darker. MAC Delectable is also darker. MAC Peachstock is lighter, more beige. MAC Gotta Dash! is pinker. Bobbi Brown Bare Pink is more beige.

It’s a warmer take on the nude lip, and it’s not too light/pale, so it’s more versatile and will be less stark across skin tones. (Nude, of course, often depends on your skin tone.) Biscayne Park had very nearly opaque color coverage. I noticed the finish and texture of this were creamier than other shades I’ve so far–it ended up having a stronger sheen but still within range of what I’d expect a satin finish to have. It applied evenly and smoothly, and I didn’t have any of the color settle into lip lines over time. This shade lasted four and a half hours on me, which is a little better than the average lipstick but not long-wearing. Again, not drying and only mildly moisturizing, so this area continues to be one thing NARS didn’t nail in the formula.

NARS Golshan Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Golshan Satin Lip Pencil
NARS Golshan Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Golshan Satin Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “spiced wine.” It’s a subtly warm-toned, brown-ish red with a creamy, satiny finish. OCC Starling is warmer, browner. MAC Camden Chic is darker, browner. Make Up For Ever #44 is a touch less warm-toned.

The one characteristic that is most consistent among the new Lip Pencils is the color payoff! Golshan is no exception as it delivers full, rich pigmentation and covers my lip freckle entirely (not even a shadow of it comes through). I love the lightweight, thin consistency once it is applied to lips, because it doesn’t look heavy, despite the creamy, opaque color. It doesn’t cling or settle into lip lines, but it doesn’t slide around, either. When I touched the pencil tip to my lips, it felt soft, melted almost, but it was quite clearly not, and on, the glossiness fades in seconds to a satin finish–as promised. I wish these were as full of hydration as they’re made out to be (sorry, but my lips did not feel “[drenched] in decadent moisture”), but after the six hours it lasted for, my lips were no worse for the wear–at best, lightly hydrating but not a formula I’d say is moisturizing overall.

NARS Het Loo Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Het Loo Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Het Loo Satin Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “cognac.” It’s a muted, orange-toned, medium brown with a soft, satin sheen. MAC Tea Ceremony is lighter and more orange. MAC Mocha is redder. MAC Spiced Tea is shimmery and sheerer.

The color payoff was rich and intense; I had no trouble achieving full color coverage with a few strokes–it was really pigmented. Het Loo had glided on well, due to the creamier consistency. Despite the creaminess, it didn’t have too much slip, so it did not slide around on the lips. Once it’s on, it sets a bit, which results in that natural sheen that keeps it from being totally matte but not enough to make it glossy. When I tested this shade, it wore for five and a half hours, and it was neither drying nor hydrating.
