NARS Velvet Eyeliners (Part 2)

NARS Black Moon Velvet Liner
NARS Black Moon Velvet Liner

NARS Black Moon Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep black with a satin finish. It had rich color payoff in one stroke, and it was easy to layer and build as desired, too–it didn’t lift or cause the color to streak. It was creamy enough to be comfortable to apply, but it didn’t migrate or move around immediately. The color wore for eight hours overall. MAC Flourish Me Deep (LE, $18.00) is warmer, lighter (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Jet (LE, $24.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Graphblack (P, $16.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Sephora Clubbing Stilettos (P, $10.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Smolder (P, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Perversion (P, $20.00) is warmer (95% similar). Make Up For Ever M10 Matte Black (P, $21.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Urban Decay Perversion (P, $20.00) is warmer (95% similar). Stila Stingray (P, $22.00) is glossier (95% similar). MAC Definitely Black (P, $20.00) is darker, less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Perversion (P, $22.00) is warmer, darker (95% similar). Too Faced Perfect Black (P, $18.00) is darker (95% similar). Buxom Call Me (P, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Black Brilliance (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). Estee Lauder Blackened Black (LE, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). Zoeva Black to Earth (P, $7.50) is more shimmery (90% similar). Hourglass Obsidian (P, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Black Velvet (P, $20.00) is less glossy, darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Blacquer (P, $25.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Blacktrack (P, $16.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Blue Lotus Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a dark, violet-purple with cool, bluish undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in one stroke, which was buildable to a minor degree, but it was hard to get fully opaque coverage out of this shade. It could have also applied more evenly. The color started to migrate noticeably after seven and a half hours of wear. NARS St. Marks Place (P, $24.00) is darker (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty (Grape)vine (P, $25.00) is warmer, more muted (85% similar). Colour Pop Descanso (DC, $6.00) is brighter, lighter, more shimmery (85% similar). Tarina Tarantino Amethyst Android (P, $15.00) is lighter, more shimmery (85% similar). Kat Von D Homie (P, $10.00) is lighter, more shimmery (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Curacao Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a bright, cyan blue with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation in one pass, and the consistency was soft enough to be comfortable, but the edge was firm enough to get a really crisp, even line of color. The color wore well for almost nine hours on me, which made it one of the longer-wearing shades in the range. Colour Pop Bee Sting (P, $5.00)(95% similar). Colour Pop Bee Sting (DC, $6.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Hi-Def Cyan (P, $16.00) is cooler (95% similar). Stila Cobalt (P, $22.00) is more muted, darker (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Darklight Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a dark, muted navy blue with cool undertones and a satin finish. The color payoff was good, though not fully opaque (and it didn’t layer and build to opaque fo rme). The texture was lightly creamy but seemed to have a little more slip, so it sometimes looked streaky applied–that streakiness was more noticeable if I applied a thicker line of color, whereas a thin line made it so thin that it wasn’t noticeable except in a magnifying mirror! This shade started to migrate to the outer corners of my lash line after seven and a half hours of wear. Estee Lauder Blackened Sapphire (LE, $20.00) is darker (95% similar). Colour Pop DTLA (P, $5.00) is lighter (90% similar). Colour Pop DTLA (P, $6.00) is darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Push (P, $20.00)(90% similar). MAC Waveline (DC, $16.00) is glossier (90% similar). Giorgio Armani #3 (P, $29.00) is darker (90% similar). Stila Midnight Blue (P, $22.00) is cooler, lighter (85% similar). MAC Waveline (P, $16.00) is brighter, lighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Sabbath (P, $20.00) is glossier (85% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Over(night) (P, $25.00) is cooler, lighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Push (P, $22.00) is cooler, lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA OVERVIEW | NARS Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is supposed to be creamy, “richly pigmented,” and “softly blendable.” It’s a new, permanent formula for fall, and it is available in eight shades. They are soft enough that they don’t tug or drag on the lash line, and they don’t feel sharp either, despite being a much firmer pencil eyeliner (not waxy like a lot of popular formulas) and tended to be more pigmented in one stroke. Some shades lasted for seven hours, while some lasted closer to nine hours.

NARS Velvet Eyeliners (Part 1)

NARS Kaliste Velvet Liner
NARS Kaliste Velvet Liner

NARS Kaliste Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep, bluish-teal with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had nice pigmentation in one stroke, which was buildable to totally opaque coverage with another pass. The texture was lightly creamy without moving around on the skin, but it didn’t tug or feel uncomfortably sharp on the lash line either. This shade stayed on well for eight hours before migrating to the outer corners noticeably. Estee Lauder Dramatic Teal (LE, $22.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Practice Makes Perfect (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). bareMinerals 1PM (LE, $15.00) is warmer (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Exotic Teal (LE, $35.00) is warmer, darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Mainline (P, $20.00) is cooler, less pigmented (90% similar). MAC Midnight Blues (DC, $16.00) is warmer, darker (90% similar). Estee Lauder Electric Teal (LE, $20.00) is lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Last Frontier Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a soft sheen. The color payoff was opaque in one pass, while the pencil had a creamy, glide-on texture that was a little wet and needed to dry down for a few seconds. This shade only wore for seven hours, unfortunately, making it one of the shorter-wearing shades in the range. Urban Decay Demolition (P, $22.00) is glossier (95% similar). Urban Decay Stag (LE, $20.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Rich Experience (P, $20.00) is warmer, lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Rail (P, $20.00) is less glossy (95% similar). MAC Local Wares (DC, $16.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Mahogany (P, $24.00) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Smokeout (LE, $20.00) is cooler, lighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Express-Oh! (LE, $25.00) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). MAC Darkness of Calm (LE, $17.50) is cooler, lighter (90% similar). Buxom Here's My Number (P, $17.00) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Lush (P, $20.00) is less glossy, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Crave (P, $20.00) is warmer (90% similar). Sephora Diving in Malaysia (18) (P, $10.00) is warmer, darker (85% similar). Urban Decay Demolition (P, $20.00) is warmer (85% similar). Bobbi Brown Chocolate (LE, $24.00) is warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS London Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a medium-dark gray with a natural sheen. It had good pigmentation in one pass, which is always nice. This shade had a lot of slip, which gave it a wet-like feel going on and took awhile for it to dry down, so it did migrate into the fine lines underneath my lower lash line in the process. I was able to soften and blend the edges with a pencil brush, and then the color stayed in place for around seven hours. Colour Pop Timber (DC, $6.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Midnight Snack (P, $16.00) is lighter (90% similar). Colour Pop Timber (DC, $5.00) is warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Lure (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Make Up For Ever M14 Matte Charcoal Grey (P, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Mood (P, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Mambo Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a medium-dark, reddish brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had fairly good pigmentation in one stroke, and it was buildable to full coverage with two layers. The texture was moderately creamy but didn’t take too long to dry down, so it was easy to apply and didn’t require attention after it was applied to fix any migration. This shade wore for seven and a half hours on me. NARS Via de Martelli (P, $24.00) is warmer (90% similar). Stila Spice (P, $22.00) is warmer (90% similar). Make Up For Ever M60 Matte Dark Brown (P, $21.00) is warmer, darker (85% similar). MAC Seasonally Spicy (LE, $16.00) is warmer (85% similar). Make Up For Ever Gypsy (LE, $19.00) is less glossy, darker (85% similar). Colour Pop Call Me (P, $5.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

NARS Antares Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow
NARS Antares Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow

NARS Antares Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow ($29.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a bright, light pewter with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage applied dry and mostly opaque coverage applied damp. The texture was blendable, a little dry to the touch, but it didn’t look dry or powdery on the skin. The wear was similar regardless of application method, but damp application lasted a half hour longer, until eight hours. Urban Decay Vape (P, $20.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Vex (P, $16.00) is more muted, darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Giorgio Armani #19 (LE, $33.00) is darker (85% similar). NARS Arcturus Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow ($29.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a deep, navy blue with cool undertones and a very pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage applied dry, which lasted for seven and a half hours, and it was more blendable dry than damp. It had richer, more opaque coverage applied damp, but it was moderately difficult to blend it out and tended to look patchy as I blended, though it lasted for eight hours. I also noticed that it faded down more when applied damp but then blended. Tom Ford Beauty Emerald Lust #4 (LE) is lighter (90% similar). bareMinerals Private Isle (LE) is lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). NARS Rigel Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow ($29.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a medium, rosy copper with warm undertones and a metallic finish. Applied dry, it had semi-sheer pigmentation and lasted for seven hours on me. Applied damp, it was richly pigmented and fully opaque, while the wear was closer to eight hours. The texture was really smooth, blendable, and easy to work with. bareMinerals Bubbles (LE) is lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Sweet Heat (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). Estee Lauder Pink Zinc (P, $24.00) is lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). bareMinerals Bare Skin (LE) is warmer (90% similar). NARS Dual-Intensity Blush Palette

NARS Summer 2016 Dual-Intensity Blush Palette
NARS Summer 2016 Dual-Intensity Blush Palette

NARS Summer 2016 Dual-Intensity Blush Palette ($59.00 for 0.32 oz.) includes four, limited edition powder blushes (one is more of a highlighter shade for most skin tones). The three blushes shades are richer shades, and two of the shades are quite deep, so I can see this working on a variety of skin tones. When working with the formula dry, I find it easy to apply and blend out, and they perform well overall. Damp application is harder to work with on my skin, as it doesn’t blend out as easily; it is better patted on with a damp fingertip or on bare skin (something about the damp brush/powder seems to disturb any base products more often than not for me). The wear ranged from seven to nine hours for me with damp application lasting longer overall.

I reached out to NARS recently for clarification with respect to the formula, because summer’s duos had contrary claims compared to the permanent duos. So, per that conversation: the Dual Intensity Blush formula is a wet/dry formulation that yields a “natural looking glow” with a dry application, whereas as damp application gives a “high-impact finish,” and the more water you have on your brush, the more “watercolor-like” the pigment will appear and with less water, it is “more saturated.” It seems like 1) the finish is more metallic/frosted with damp/wet application, and 2) the color will sheer out with a lot of water but appear more intense if just used with a damp brush. The best I can interpret is that there is just more leeway now with damp application not being specifically sheer/translucent from the get-go. I tried, and you really have to have a near-sopping wet brush before the blushes start resembling watercolors. My experience remains: it really is just medium to full coverage with a more frosted/shimmery finish applied dry, and then richer, deeper, and often more opaque color with a smoother sheen applied damp.

Summer Dual Intensity Blush I is a pale, silvery pink with cool, iridescent shimmer. It had semi-sheer coverage applied dry, and semi-opaque applied damp, while the finish goes from frosted to metallic. It wore well for seven and a half hours dry, eight and a half hours damp. I think the lighter color and sheerer nature of this shade made it easy to apply even damp. NYX Snow Rose (P, $7.99) is darker (95% similar). Giorgio Armani No. 07 (P, $62.00) is cooler (95% similar). NYX Ice Queen (P, $5.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Laura Geller Charming Pink (P, $24.00) is darker (95% similar). Burberry No. 01 White (LE, $68.00) is warmer, lighter (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Where the Dreamers Go (LE, $2.99) is less shimmery (95% similar). L'Oreal Ice (P, $12.99) is brighter, lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Looxi Beauty Pandora (P, $7.50) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Aura (P, $26.00) is cooler (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Summer Dual Intensity Blush II is a slightly muted, medium-dark rosy plum with warm undertones and gold, frosted shimmer. It is like a deeper, richer take on the brand’s signature Orgasm blush (but it is warmer, less pink-based). It had opaque coverage both wet and dry, but damp application had a stronger metallic finish and appeared darker. It wore well for eight hours dry and nine hours damp. MAC Love Thing (P, $27.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Sweet Vision (LE, $28.00) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Stila Berry Shimmer (LE) is cooler, darker (90% similar). Laura Geller Tropic Hues (P, $28.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Sweet Samba (LE, $27.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Pink Glow #5 (LE, $60.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Gleeful (P, $27.00) is warmer, less shimmery (90% similar). NARS Realm of the Senses (Together) (LE, $30.00) is warmer, brighter, lighter (90% similar). MAC Simmer (LE, $27.00) is brighter, lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). NARS Panic (Right) (P) is warmer, brighter (85% similar). Laura Geller Pink Buttercream (P, $28.00) is warmer, lighter (85% similar). NARS Soulshine (Together) (LE, $30.00) is warmer (85% similar). Surratt Beauty De Cherubique (P, $32.00) is warmer, lighter (85% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Bridal Rose (LE) is warmer, more muted (85% similar). Becca Snapdragon (P, $34.00) is warmer, lighter (85% similar). Benefit Bella Bamba (Palette) (P, $28.00) is lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Summer Dual Intensity Blush III is a deep, fuchsia-berry with cool undertones and a frosted sheen with slight sparkle. It is slightly sheerer and more muted applied dry than it is damp, though I find they look similar once blended on the cheeks. The texture of this shade was firmer and denser, and it seemed to make blending it out harder, so this one took some effort to even out on the skin, even dry. It wore well for eight hours dry, nine hours damp. NARS Panic (Left) (P) is brighter, lighter (90% similar). MAC Supernova (LE, $27.00) is warmer (90% similar). Laura Geller Plumberry (P, $26.00) is darker (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Summer Dual Intensity Blush IV is a medium-dark, rosy brown with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It was richly pigmented both dry and damp, but the damp application made the color appear a few shades darker and more metallic. The consistency was very smooth and blendable dry, and it was fairly blendable damp, but it did need extra effort/patience. This shade lasted for eight hours applied dry and closer to nine hours applied damp. MAC Love Joy (P, $27.00) is lighter, less shimmery (85% similar). NARS Cheek Studio III (LE, $30.00) is warmer, lighter (85% similar). NYX Bronzed (P, $6.50) is warmer, lighter (85% similar). NARS Fervor (Right) (P) is warmer, brighter (85% similar). Chanel Alezane (260) (P, $45.00) is more muted (85% similar). Clinique Fig Pop (P, $21.00) is brighter, lighter (85% similar). Charlotte Tilbury The Climax (P, $40.00) is warmer, lighter (85% similar). Laura Geller Golden Apricot (P, $28.00) is warmer, lighter (85% similar). Edward Bess Ciao (P, $45.00) is lighter (80% similar). Tarte Muse (LE, $30.00) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
