Maybelline Brazen Berry ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color
Maybelline Brazen Berry ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color

Maybelline Brazen Berry ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a creamy, fuchsia magenta with subtle, cool undertones and a semi-glossy finish. MAC Heroine is darker and purpler–plus nearly matte. MAC Seductive Intent is a bit more magenta but closer than Heroine. MAC Spitfire is similar. MAC Style Curve is also similar but has violet shimmer. MAC Love Forever is pinker. Dolce & Gabbana Violet is purpler and lighter. MAC Night Blooming is slightly brighter. Shiseido Fuchsia RS 320 is a touch more magenta.

It has semi-opaque color payoff, enough that it adds substantial color to the lip, but there’s a translucency that enables the natural lip color to peek through. The consistency of this shade was very, very slick and creamy–it did not apply quite as evenly as other shades I’ve tried have. Brazen Berry was moisturizing, wore well for six hours (and left a stain behind), and was comfortable to wear. You may get lines if you press your lips together, so it’s important to apply just enough for even coverage but not so much that there’s excess product. Because the color is brighter and bolder, the lines that do get created are harder to see.

The highlight of this product is how comfortable and hydrating it is when worn. The color payoff is good, as is the texture, even if they aren't 100% perfect, they're both quite good.

Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color
Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color

Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a bold, medium-dark orange with strong red undertones and a satiny finish. MAC Scarlet Ibis is very similar, but it has a matte finish. OCC Psycho is also similar, perhaps a touch more orange. MAC Sail La Vie is very comparable, both in finish and color. Giorgio Armani #405 is more orange and has shimmer. Dolce & Gabbana Sheer is very similar but glossier.

It has very rich color payoff, but there’s a very slight translucency where a hint of the natural lip color comes through–unless you have really, really naturally pigmented lips, it’s not going to interfere with the color, though. A benefit of the lightweight, translucent nature of the product is that it doesn’t look heavy, like a richer, more opaque cream-finish shade might. This shade had some slip to it, so it was both creamy and balm-like. It glided on evenly and without pulling or tugging on the lip, and it left a natural sheen behind. Vibrant Mandarin was lightly hydrating, wore for five and a half hours, and left behind a very slight stain (not quite as prone to staining as the other shades I’ve reviewed).  Because this one had added slip to the consistency, it did have a tendency to leave lines if I pressed my lips together, but luckily with the bolder color, they were less noticeable than if this had been a very pale color.

Maybelline Hot Plum ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color
Maybelline Hot Plum ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color

Maybelline Hot Plum ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a brightened, magenta pink with a satiny finish. Maybelline Fuchsia Flash is pinker and brighter–a lot less magenta/purple. MAC Daddy’s Little Girl is lighter. MAC Pink Pigeon is pinker. MAC Night Blooming is a touch purpler. MAC Dear Diary is similar. Shiseido Fuchsia RS 320 is purpler, darker. NARS Schiap is slightly pinker.

This is one of the more “subdued” shades from the range that I’ve tried, though it is still a bright, vivid shade. It’s not quite as neon in color, so for some, it may be more wearable as a result. Hot Plum had very nearly opaque color payoff–there’s a hint of translucency (but the trade off is that it doesn’t look heavy on the lips) but it looks rather opaque.  The consistency is lightweight, slightly creamy, and is comfortable to wear.  It had less slip compared to the last few shades I’ve reviewed, but it didn’t pull or tug on the lips when I applied it.  Hot Plum wore for six hours and left a lingering stain behind.  I found this shade neither hydrating nor drying.

Maybelline Shocking Coral ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color
Maybelline Shocking Coral ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color

Maybelline Shocking Coral ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a bold coral-red with a luminous finish and warm undertones. Laura Mericer Hydrangea is lighter. Maybelline Vivid Rose is redder, darker. MAC Impassioned is pinker, less red-toned. MAC Party Parrot is a bit brighter and more intense, but it has more of a matte finish, too. Make Up For Ever #37 is warmer, less red.

It is rich in color with very nearly opaque color coverage (the way it lies on lips gives it a subtle translucency that keeps the color from looking heavy on the lips).  There’s a slight glossiness to the color because of its lightweight, creamy consistency that has some slip to it.  It glides evenly over the lips without pulling or dragging.  Shocking Coral wore for six hours, and it did leave behind a soft stain for another hour or so.  The lipstick was comfortable to wear, and it was lightly moisturizing when I wore it.

If you've ever bemoaned a lack of pigment in drugstore lipstick formulas, then you have to check out Maybelline's Vivids range, because lacking in pigment they are not--nearly full color coverage and long, comfortable wear!

Maybelline Fuchsia Flash ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color
Maybelline Fuchsia Flash ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color

Maybelline Fuchsia Flash ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a bright, bold, and electric magenta pink with strong blue undertones and a glossy sheen. MAC Pink Pigeon is very similar in color but has more of a satin finish. Both OCC Nylon and MAC Candy Yum Yum are brighter and a touch lighter. MAC Dear Diary is a touch more magenta. MAC Show Orchid has fuchsia iridescence and is darker.

Well, if you’ve ever had one of those electric pink lipsticks catch your eye and you’ve thought to yourself, “I don’t know if I’d wear it,” and as a result, you haven’t justified buying one of the (many) higher-end versions of it, you’re in luck! Maybelline’s Fuchsia Flash is very much on-trend and is rather similar to popular neon pink favorites.  The biggest way that Fuchsia Flash differs is that it has a glossier finish from the get-go, which does, inevitably, tone down and become more satiny as the color wears (two to three hours after application).

It has a creamier, almost gel-like, consistency when applied from the tube, and it applies evenly and smoothly with mostly opaque color coverage.  The texture is a bit wet/slick, so it can create subtle lines of demarcation if you press your lips together (noticeable if you’re really looking, not noticeable from afar).  Fuchsia Flash lasted a full six hours on my lips, and it was hydrating while I wore it!  It is scented with a sweet, fruity aroma, which I didn’t find too strong or cloying but it is there.

Maybelline Vivid Rose ColorSensational Vivids Lipcolor
Maybelline Vivid Rose ColorSensational Vivids Lipcolor

Maybelline Vivid Rose ColorSensational Vivids Lipcolor ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a bold, medium-dark pink with rosy red undertones and a natural sheen. NARS Jardin des Plantes has a slight shimmer and is a touch brighter. Tarina Tarantino Fuchsia Lining is sheerer, so it appears more subdued. Guerlain Champs-Elysees is pinker/cooler-toned. MAC Scan-delicious is a touch pinker. MAC Gesina is close but a bit redder.

Maybelline wasn’t kidding about this being a vivid color–it’s intense, bright, and bold–and it had nice color coverage being very nearly opaque (there’s a slight shadow of my lip freckle coming through). What’s nice about the coverage, though, is that it’s rich without feeling heavy. It also applied beautifully and evenly without settling into lip lines, and while I wore it, I didn’t have trouble with the color feathering or bleeding. Vivid Rose wore for six hours well, and then a stain lingered for another hour or so. It has a sweet, fruity scent that I didn’t find overwhelming. It was neither drying nor hydrating, and the consistency was just creamy enough so it didn’t pull or tug at the lips but didn’t feel slick.
