The Spring 2015 Report Card: The Best Products from Q1

There are so many products releasing each month that it can be hard to keep track of what was worth considering that I wanted to try putting together a quarterly overview that looks at the last three months of reviews with a best-of-the-quarter compilation. I’ve tried to group by formula when it makes sense to, and other times you’ll see specific shades or a collection. I’ve only included products that scored at least A- or higher (or else we’d be here all day!).

You can always browse all of my past reviews by rating and choose your threshold (or go diving for those F reviews) as well as view any Temptalia Recommends products. For a list of all my all-time favorites, see my Editor’s Choice Awards.

Clinique Cheek Pops
Clinique Cheek Pops are now available in eight new shades! You can check out the full roundup here, but they performed extremely well and in line with the original four released last year. All of the new shades rated A- or higher: Fig Pop (A+), Heather Pop (A-), Melon Pop (A-), Nude Pop (A), Pansy Pop (A-), Pink Pop (A+), Rosy Pop (A), Cola Pop (A+).

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors are available in a liquid, cream, and powder format, and this spring, we worked through a lot of the newest formula, the Poured, as well as wrote up a everything you need to know guide about the family of formulas. The Poured (or cream) formula rated quite well across the shades released: Moonstone (A-), Opal (A-), Pearl (A-), Rose Gold (A-), Topaz (A).

Bite Beauty Butter Cream
Bite Beauty Butter Cream Lipsticks launched as a new, permanent formula with eight shades. The blunt tip is supposed to make it ultra creamy. Gimmicks aside, the formula was excellent. I hope they’ll consider adding more cool-toned neutrals next! Here were the top performers: Hazelnut (A), Marzipan (A), Pecan (A), Rosewood (A).

Chanel Rouge Coco
Chanel Rouge Coco was reformulated and launched with 29 different shades this spring. The formula was more inconsistent, as some shades did well and others were shorter-wearing and didn’t apply well. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye
IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer (A) is a fantastic, medium-to-full coverage concealer that covers evenly, smoothly, and wears long. I’d love to see the brand expand their shade range, as I have to mix two shades to get a good match (there are only four shades).

Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Palette includes three highlighters and three sculpting powders in a slim palette. The palette had really soft, silky textures, which made it easy to blend on the skin. It may be more or less useful depending on your contouring application and coloring as the palette runs warmer.

Kevyn Aucoin Medium The Sculpting Powder has an unbelievable texture that’s very soft, smooth, and blendable. The color is more taupe-like, which makes it one of my favorite hues for contouring. I wish they had more shades.

Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow
Make Up For Ever Artist Shadows continue to be an impressive formula. I think I’m down to less than fifty shades (about half of them are blushes, too) that I haven’t actually worn, and there are very few duds. Here are the highlights from this past quarter: D552 Crystalline Gray Beige (A+), I212 Periwinkle (A), I318 Linen Khaki (A),I628 Reptile (A+), I824 Ocher Pink (A+), I872 Pearly Pink (A), ME232 Turquoise Blue (A+), ME614 Graphite Brown (A), ME644 Iced Brown (A+), S502 White Sand (A-).

Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow
Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow

For spring, there are five new, limited edition shades of Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows ($6.99 for 0.14 oz. each). They’ve just popped up locally for me, and as far as I know, you’ll probably have to track them down in-store if any of them appeal to you (usually, limited edition collections from drugstore brands aren’t available online).

All five had a slight greasy quality to them–slightly thinner but more slip than you’d expect and a bit heavy–but surprisingly, they lasted anywhere from 10 to 16 hours on me before creasing (which isn’t “24 hour wear without creasing or fading”), which is good wear for a cream eyeshadow but shorter than average wear for the original Color Tattoos (last spring I tested shades for 16 hours and didn’t have fading/creasing at that point). Every time I see a 24-hour wear time claim, I feel like I’m watching someone go into a pitch black basement in a horror movie screaming, “NOOOOO!”

The bigger issue I had with these was that they were harder to apply; they just didn’t have even, smooth coverage. They blend with each other nicely, but there were as of the lid where color was semi-sheer and other areas where the color would be mostly opaque. The only shade that didn’t have that issue was Black Orchid, which would be my top pick out of the bunch. I think these are best used as colored eyeshadows bases or as sheer washes of lighter, more shimmery/metallic eyeshadow, but if you want really opaque, smooth, true-to-pot color, you’ll be disappointed.

Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a cool-toned, light-medium pink with a silvery-white frost finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage and lasted for twelve hours before starting to crease. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Hibiscus Heartbreak (125) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a muted, medium lavender with a cool undertone and warmer, golden pearl that gives it a more metallic finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, looked uneven applied, and lasted for ten and a half hours before I noticed very slight creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Black Orchid (130) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a medium-dark taupe brown with warm undertones and a gray overcast. It had mostly opaque coverage and had a slightly thicker consistency compared to the other shades in the spring set (more in line with the originals). It was browner when sheered out, and you lost a lot of the gray as a result. It wore well for sixteen hours, and I saw very slight fading but no creasing at that point. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Hydrangea Hype (135) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a brightened, light-medium silvery blue with a metallic sheen. When it is sheered out, it is even lighter and more dominated by its silver tones. It had mostly opaque pigmentation that went on unevenly and tended to streak. It lasted for ten hours on me before I noticed creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Rose Riot (140) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a light-medium pink with warm undertones and a gold, frosted metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage that was best applied as a sheer wash, as it didn’t go on evenly due to the higher slip of the product. This shade lasted for twelve hours before creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Playful Peony (975) Color Sensational Lip Color
Maybelline Playful Peony (975) Color Sensational Lip Color

Maybelline Playful Peony (975) Color Sensational Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a light-medium, pink-lavender with subtle cool undertones, barely-there pearl, and a soft sheen. Maybelline Lilac Flush (725) (P, $7.49) is cooler-toned, less pink. Maybelline Power Peony (720) (P, $7.49) is darker. Maybelline Petal Pink (710) (P, $7.49) is lighter. Givenchy Rose Dahlia (210) (P, $36.00) is lighter. Maybelline Pink Pop (P, $7.49) is darker. MAC Raspberry Swirl (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Pink Nouveau (P, $16.00) is darker, less glossy. MAC Naughty Saute (LE, $16.00) is slightly darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

After visiting three stores, I was able to track the last of the limited edition lip colors! I had expected it to be more on the lavender side, but alas, it was not the case , and I was surprised at actual color, as there were shades very close to this already released this spring by Maybelline, so it seems redundant. It had semi-opaque color coverage that went on somewhat evenly, but it could use improvement so that the application was smoother and less prone to streaking. It lasted for three hours on me and was a little hydrating, but the pearl shimmer added texture to it despite being subtle.

Maybelline Rebellious Raspberry (110) Color Elixir Lip Color
Maybelline Rebellious Raspberry (110) Color Elixir Lip Color

Maybelline Rebellious Raspberry (110) Color Elixir Lip Color ($8.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a vibrant, medium pink-coral with warm undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. It had rich, nearly opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly. The texture is thicker, mostly non-sticky, and was nicely hydrating while worn. On me, it wore well for four and a half hours. It does have a strong perfume-y scent and soap-like taste. Revlon HD Strawberry Topaz (535) (P, $8.99) is warmer. Dior Magique (479) (P, $35.00) is lighter. MAC Drawn in Chic (LE, $15.00) is lighter, warmer. Marc Jacobs Beauty Paint It (202) (P, $28.00) is lighter, warmer. Giorgio Armani #519 (P, $29.00) is darker, cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Citrus Evolution (115) Color Elixir Lip Color ($8.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a light-medium, peachy-orange with warm, yellow undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but the color settled into lip lines from the get-go and only worsened as it wore. On me, it lasted for three hours and was moisturizing while worn. Chanel Exotique (12) (P, $34.00) is darker. Chanel Sensuel (11) (P, $34.00) is lighter. MAC Grand Pumpkin (LE, $15.00) is darker. NYX Cherry Cheesecake (P, $5.00) is darker. MAC Live It Up (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Ray of Sunshine (P, $22.00) is lighter. MAC Overspiced (LE, $15.00) is lighter. Maybelline Nude Illusion (060) (P, $8.99) is pinker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Passionate Peony (120) Color Elixir Lip Color ($8.99 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is a light pink with subtle neutral-to-warm undertones and a creamy, glossy finish. When swatched and worn, it looked nothing like it did in the tube. It is slightly thick with a lot of milkiness, which made it pool into lip lines very noticeably. It had semi-opaque coverage, but it’s a gloss that would be better applied over a lip liner or lipstick to minimize it filling up lip lines. It lasted for three hours and was hydrating while worn. MAC Lots of Laughs (LE, $15.00) is darker. NARS Turkish Delight (P, $26.00) is darker. Maybelline Petal Plush (100) (P, $8.99) is darker, more shimmery. MAC Picture Pink (LE, $15.00) is darker. Maybelline Tangy Tulip (960) Color Sensational Lip Color
Maybelline Tangy Tulip (960) Color Sensational Lip Color

Maybelline Tangy Tulip (960) Color Sensational Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a slightly muted, medium orange-red with warm undertones and a luminous sheen. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a lightly creamy consistency that was thin but glided on without tugging. On me, it lasted for three and a half hours and was lightly hydrating. The formula has a sweet, fruity scent that’s not too strong. MAC Ravishingly Rich (P, $23.00) is more matte. NARS Lana (P, $32.00) is darker. NARS Geraldine (P, $32.00) is similar. Givenchy Corail Signature (317) (P, $36.00) is lighter. Lipstick Queen Jungle Queen (P, $22.00) is redder. Illamasqua Soaked (P, $26.00) is brighter. NARS Timanfaya (P, $25.00) is more matte. MAC Sweet Grenadine (LE, $17.00) is lighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty All the Way (122) (P, $30.00) is darker. Milani Sweet Nectar (P, $5.49) is more matte, brighter. MAC Morange (P, $16.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Bubblegum Bloom (965) Color Sensational Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a light, cool-toned pink with a strong white base and white frosted shimmer. It was semi-sheer with a gritty texture that applied horribly; it was incredibly uneven, made my lips look worse, and settled into lip lines. The color slipped away within an hour and a half with additional color settling into lip lines, and it was neither drying nor hydrating. Maybelline Petal Pink (710) (P, $7.49) is darker, brighter, less shimmery. MAC To Savour (P, $23.00) is less shimmery, darker. MAC A Novel Romance (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. MAC Dress to Impress (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. MAC Be Fabulous (P, $22.00) is less shimmery. MAC Rose Lily (LE, $16.00) is darker, less shimmery. Revlon Cupcake (P, $7.49) is darker. MAC Dreaminess (P, $22.00) is less shimmery. Guerlain Rose Innocent (LE, $51.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Carnation Cabernet (970) Color Sensational Lip Color ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a brightened, fuchsia-berry with cool, blue undertones and a glossy sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage with a moderately emollient consistency that has a “wet” appearance when applied. The texture is thin with translucency, so the natural lip color comes thorugh, and this tended to look like a lip stain applied. It lasted for four hours on me and was lightly hydrating. Urban Decay Sheer Anarchy (P, $20.00) is less glossy. Tom Ford Beauty Francesco (LE, $32.00) is more shimmery, less glossy. Lipstick Queen Play It (P, $50.00) is similar. MAC Catharina (P, $23.00) is less glossy. Estee Lauder Dominant (P, $30.00) is brighter. Buxom Exhibitionist (P, $21.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

P.S. — There is one more new, limited edition shade from Maybelline, but my local store didn’t have it. Sorry! :(
