Laura Mercier Fall 2012 Collection — Cinema Noir

Laura’s inspiration for 2012 draws from her background as a fine art painter and focuses on the mood and attitude of women through different art periods. For the fall season, Laura was inspired by Hollywood stars in the late 1940’s—the era when black and white film transitioned into colour. This classic period featured intellectual beauties like Ingrid Bergman, Katherine Hepburn and Rita Hayworth, and their signature looks in films had a sensual quality—slightly colourized, sexy yet subdued. The overall cinematic feeling is one of vintage charm, strong romanticism and an ultra-feminine appeal.

Makeup is modern and dramatic. Eyes wear muted shades in smoky mixes of teals and chocolates, blended together to create a true sultry appeal. Lashes are long and voluminous tipped in burgundy, defining and enhancing the eyes. Lips have a creamy soft finish in shades of roses and mauves, while cheeks are luminous and glowing. Nails are painted in soft shades of nude and cocoa.

Laura Mercier Kissed Lips Sheer Lip Color
Laura Mercier Kissed Lips Sheer Lip Color

Laura Mercier Kissed Lips Sheer Lip Color

Laura Mercier Kissed Lips Sheer Lip Color ($22.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “fresh coral-pink.” It’s a vibrant coral-pink with a creamy finish and a hint of sheen.  As far as coral-pinks go, though, this is just barely on the edge.  Burberry Primrose Hill is slightly pinker. Guerlain Nahema is a little darker and more orange-based. MAC Watch Me Simmer is much more vibrant. NYX Haute Melon is very, very similar–a little less pink-hued.

The formula is described as a “hydrating, anti-aging, plumping, and conditioning lip color” while delivering a “sheer wash of color with a semi-matte finish.” For fans of more opaque lipsticks, you’ll want to keep reading, because this color is anything but sheer! It’s very nearly opaque on lips–the barest hint of my lip freckle peeks through. It’s vanilla-scented with no discernible taste.

Laura Mercier delivers a somewhat moisturizing formula that’s creamy and glides on fairly evenly and easily, and really, the only claim she missed was the sheer one. Just to reiterate, I rate products based on what the brand claims the product does, so if it’s a sheer product that ends up being opaque, they’re not living up to their claim–and this is why purchasing makeup is entirely subjective, because someone who loves sheer color wouldn’t like this and vice versa. My hope with reviews is to set expectations so that you know what you’re buying, for better or worse!

Kissed Lips wears really well and long–six hours in total–and it’s not drying at all. My lips felt all right after I removed the product seven hours later–not lovingly hydrated but not devoid of moisture. The texture, while creamy, seems to emphasize any and all lip imperfections–you can see that it’s managed to find every last bit of imperfect lip texture in the swatch. If you have drier, chapped lips, I would pass on this particular shade, because it will cling. Not drying yet it exhibits some of the characteristics of a drier formula!

5 Forbidden Burgundy Eyeshadows

Burgundy eyeshadows can look really lovely and add a lot of drama to any eye look. I love wearing it in the crease paired with a soft gold or brown.

  1. Laura Mercier Deep Garnet — rich, velvety burgundy
  2. MAC Deep Damson — deep burgundy-brown
  3. Inglot #452 — burgundy berry with a frosted finish
  4. Make Up For Ever #311 — darkened purpled burgundy
  5. Make Up For Ever #17 — creamy burgundy with a hint of brown and berry

What’s your favorite burgundy eyeshadow?

Laura Mercier Raspberry Sorbet Satin Lip Color
Laura Mercier Raspberry Sorbet Satin Lip Color

Laura Mercier Raspberry Sorbet Satin Lip Color

Laura Mercier Raspberry Sorbet Satin Lip Color ($22.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a medium-dark pink with subtle blue undertones. The finish is supposed to be semi-matte; there’s a healthy sheen to the color once applied, but it’s not glossy and looks creamy from afar. Chanel Belgravia is cooler-toned, lighter. Bobbi Brown Mod Pink is lighter, pinker. Dolce & Gabbana Splendid is brighter, less berry. Lancome Posh Pink is redder, more intense.

This particular formula is supposed to be long-wearing, non-drying, highly pigmented, and non-feathering.The color is definitely opaque, and you need very little product to do so; one glide across the lips yields excellent color coverage. It has a creamy consistency that doesn’t feel too heavy or have too much slip. When I tested this shade for wear, it wore well for around six hours, and my lips didn’t feel dry or chapped after such long-wear either, which was a nice surprise.  I don’t typically have major issues with lipsticks feathering on me, but just to affirm, Raspberry Sorbet did not feather on me.

A+
Laura Mercier's lipsticks are really underrated--I don't remember trying one that didn't wow me! The texture is so creamy without being heavy or slippery, and the color coverage is exactly as described by the brand.

Laura Mercier Evening Pink Shimmer Lip Color
Laura Mercier Evening Pink Shimmer Lip Color

Laura Mercier Evening Pink Shimmer Lip Color

Laura Mercier Evening Pink Shimmer Lip Color ($22.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a bright, neon strawberry pink with opaque color coverage and a lush, natural shine. It’s a strong, bold color that brightens up the face, and it doesn’t lean too blue. VS Be Mine is less pink, more coral. Dolce & Gabbana Fuchsia is less pink and not quite as bright. MAC Party Parrot is darker, redder, and brighter. MAC Catharina is bluer and darker. Chanel Insolente is slightly darker.

Laura Mercier’s Shimmer Lip Color formula is rich in color and has a creamy consistency that’s lightweight and doesn’t slip around. Evening Pink wore five and half hours, and while I don’t always find the formula very hydrating (but definitely not drying), this one was moisturizing while I wore it. There is a noticeable floral scent but no distinct taste.

A
Evening Pink is bright and opaque, and it's definitely an unexpected shade for the season. What I really liked about it was the only slightly cool undertones, so it should wear well across skin tones and complexions!
