Illamasqua Throb Nail Varnish
Illamasqua Throb Nail Varnish

Illamasqua Throb Nail Varnish ($17.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “blood red.” It’s a medium-dark, subtly cool-toned red with a cream finish. There’s a pink tinge to it, and it’s bright but a little dusty, too. Revlon Bordeaux (P, $4.99) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Trophy Wife (LE, $32.00) is lighter, brighter. NARS Lost Red (LE, $19.00) is brighter. MAC RiRi Woo (LE, $16.00) is similar. MAC Stage Red (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Flaming Rose (P, $16.00) is similar. Chanel Suspicious (P, $27.00) is pinker. Butter London Pillar Box Red (P, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches.

Recently promoted for Valentine’s Day, Throb is a worthwhile option for anyone seeking a more muted, darker red cream. It’s intensely pigmented, and you really only need one coat for full color coverage. I’ve included two sets of photos; the first set is a single coat, and then I have a couple more that shows two coats, so you can see how there’s no real difference in color or opacity. To me, the noticeable difference is just that two coats gives it a thicker, glossier look and finish. The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, and it flowed evenly and smoothly across the nail without bubbling or streaking. Illamasqua’s formula typically wears seven to ten days on me with very minor tip wear but no chipping.

I thought coming up with a beautiful rainbow of hues might be a fun (and challenging!) theme to work under.  Of course, I took liberties with the concept of rainbow and added a few in-between shades to make a full list of ten.  I would love to see what your top ten shades are, in rainbow-order, so-to-speak! :)

  1. Urban Decay 69 — a bright, medium-dark red with cool undertones
  2. Zoya Amy — a fiery, gold-shimmered orange
  3. Sugarpill Buttercupcake — bright, matte yellow
  4. Illamasqua Fledgling — rich, grassy green with a matte finish
  5. OCC Man by Man — a metallic teal
  6. Urban Decay Radium — a medium blue with shimmer
  7. Sephora My Boyfriend’s Jeans — a blue-purple with shimmer
  8. Fyrinnae Parental Advisory — a bold, cool-toned purple
  9. Too Faced Lollipop — violet with fuchsia shimmer
  10. Dior Aventure (81) — because life isn’t complete without taupe

Share your favorites…  For bonus points, feel free to share picks for teal, violet, and taupe :)

Don’t be afraid of rocking blue eyeshadow! There are so many variations on blue, whether they lean green or purple, bright or muted, light or dark that can be worn. Here are five of my picks for spring:

  1. Sugarpill Mochi — a cool-toned, aqua blue with a matte finish
  2. Urban Decay Peace — brightened, vibrant medium blue
  3. Inglot #415 — a gold-shimmered, medium blue with a frost finish
  4. Illamasqua Sadist — a deep, dark, purple-blue with a matte finish
  5. L’Oreal Timeless Blue Spark — a medium, muted blue with a metallic finish

What colors do you pair with blue eyeshadow?

With Valentine’s Day just a couple of weeks away, it seemed only appropriate to make a list of pretty in pink shades.  Whether you like pink on your lips, tips, cheeks, or eyes, I hope that you’ll find at least one shade to drool over. :)

When it comes to eyeshadows, by and large, most of the ones covered these days are found in palettes! There are definitely plenty of reviews of singles, but palettes outnumber them easily. To compile this list, though, I only think it’s fair to focus on the singles (that’s why there’s a whole top ten for palettes, so they’re not left out!) that made my heart pitter-patter and go all aflutter.  As always, I tried to go across formulas and colors, picking the best of the best, though I couldn’t help myself from choosing two from Dior’s new cream formula.

What eyeshadows captured your attention this past year?
