Guerlain Gaela Le Rouge G de Guerlain Lipstick ($45.00 for 0.12 oz.) is the ultimate in lip luxury. This lipstick’s compact was designed by Lorenz Bäumer, a famous jeweler from the Place Vendôme in Paris, which is one reason this lipstick compact comes with a high price tag.
Gaela is a pretty-in-pink shade. It’s a medium pink with a slight sheen but not a whole lot of shimmer. I’d classify it as a neutral-warm pink, and it’s bright enough to add a pop of color to lips, but it’s not so bright that it stands out from miles away. It applies opaquely with one layer, and even from the tube, it goes on fairly evenly.
Le Rouge G de Guerlain Lipsticks are creamy, long-wearing, often opaque to semi-opaque in color pay off, and they feel hydrating once slicked onto lips. The wear-time depends on the intensity of the shades (e.g. darker shades like reds and burgundies will last longer and easily get through a meal with minimal fading, but lighter shades disappear a bit faster), but I get no less than six hours of wear with these babies. I can even get through drinking/eating, too. I do find that there is some noticeable fading after eating a meal, but it’s not a deal-breaker. These just feel very lightweight and yet give you amazing color with a few swipes. They last long enough to get me through the day without worrying about fading lip color, and they leave my lips feeling hydrated.
The packaging is sleek, luxe, and more than most look for in lipstick packaging. It’s a heavy, metal-based compact (the heaviest lipstick I’ve personally owned) with a flip-top mirror on the outside casing, which can be handy for re-application. Now, I’m not willing to fork over extra money for a mirror (hey, I can buy a $2 mirror and keep that in my purse instead!), and even though I love innovative packaging, I’m not sold on paying for it, you know? The packaging does keep fingerprints like other Guerlain packaging, but I will say that fingerprints are a lot less noticeable (hardly noticeable, in fact) compared to their other packaging. It’s most noticeable when I take flash photography of the product (ha!), but not when you’re just looking (admiring?) it. Bottom line: packaging is gorgeous and every bit luxe, but I’d rather pay $35 and skip some of the bells and whistles of the case.
For those who love to splurge on luxury beauty items, Guerlain Le Rouge G de Guerlain didn’t disappoint me. In fact, I really love the lipstick formula itself, and I’d love to see it offered sans the heavy-duty luxe packaging if only so I could feel better about purchasing these!
- Product: 28/30
- Value: 7/10
- Ease of Use: 4/5
- Packaging: 4/5
Recommendation: If you’re feeling like a splurge, Guerlain’s Le Rouge G de Guerlain Lipsticks aren’t a bad place to start. The formula is outstanding, but the price tag is tough to swallow–pretty much the only reason this product isn’t rated an A.

Guerlain Imperiale Holiday Collection for Holiday 2009
A new story and a new Christmas tale, illustrated – as before – by Princess Natalia. This time, she was proclaimed Empress!
A tribute to the femme-enfant, so wonderfully interpreted by Romy Schneider in Sissi: The Young Empress. A tribute also to history: Guerlain fondly remembers being distinguished as the very official and exclusive “Her Majesty Empress Eugenia’s patented Perfumer” in 1853. Seems like only yesterday!
In the 21st century, inspiration from the past and from all things exotic is the fuel of creation. We continue to like opulence, but in a more balanced way. Splendour is underlined with humour: while jewels bedazzle with their brilliance, the cascading rivers of diamonds may not come from Place Vendôme!
The nobility of precious stones and fabrics is enhanced with the elegance of luminous, delicately scintillating makeup. The ingredients used to achieve it are at the leading edge of sophistication, combining shades of gold with the finest powders and easy-to-apply textures, for the best possible results. Our Empress may thus apply her own makeup, without the help of a maid or… a makeup artist. A dreamy modern beauty who plays with makeup to feel sublime, an evening, a night… for a lifetime.
— Olivier Échaudemaison, Creative Director
Sublime Radiant Powder Face & Body ($85.00)
Silky and ultra-light in texture, this sparkling powder graces the skin with a gentle, sheer veil of “diamond” reflections. Like fine-spun muslin dappled with delicate sprays of glitter, it will subtly illuminate shoulders, arms, back, décolleté and hair and leave a deliciously light violet scent. You are invited to rediscover the timeless and most sensuous gesture of applying powder like perfume – and wearing a powder designed like a jewel. More than a luxurious accessory, this is a genuine secret to perfect complexion.
Météorites Perles Impériales ($53.00)
Easy to apply and almost magical, these famous multiple-effect pearls are as luminous as imperial silk and come in three formats – mini, medium and maxi – in order to optimize their evening-out and corrective action. They are also reinvented in three new shades intended to create a fresh, sublime complexion. Mauve and white illuminators, with pink for freshness and gold for light, brighten and smooth the skin to a sleek satin perfection. The famous Météorites compact features an opulent pouch in shiny black fabric, decorated with light-infused silver and rhinestones.
Météorites Voyage Impérial ($180.00)
Enjoy a perfect complexion, everywhere with Météorites Voyage pressed powder. This one-of-a-kind formulation ensures ultimate softness in a lightweight texture. Gently pearlescent, it is reinvented as a concentrate of light and radiance. The new size of the colour shades, presented as miniature “flecks”, makes blending colours easier for customized results. A stunning must-have accessory, its white gold metal compact case is covered with genuine black Swarovski crystals, delicately dotting the lid like a constellation of stars.
Ombre Eclat 4 Shades Eye Shadow ($58.00)
If eyes reveal a lot about personality, this palette will help express the full duality of your character. A combination of intensity and softness, dream and seduction, thanks to a blend of smoky, luminous and pearlescent shades. A luscious and iridescent formula that leaves a metallic effect over the eyelids in a play on light. With two taupe tones, a lingerie pink and a slightly gold-tinged white, eyes will take on a dazzling depth, both bewitching and disconcerting. Limited edition shade : #407 Bal de nuit.
Le 2 Mascara ($35.00)
The legendary two-brush mascara comes out with special evening colours. The larger brush is featured in ultra-black to intensify the beauty of your eyes. The smaller brush is used for top coat applications, offering touches of glittery gold on eyelash tips. Eyes have the sparkle of a starry night. Limited edition shade: #12 Reine de Nuit.
Rouge G Lipstick ($45.00)
A majestic lipstick, in its original case designed by the jeweler Lorenz Bäumer, Rouge G has become a classic in refinement and modernity. Elegant and unusual, its abstract and pure form is enhanced by a new jewel, black and strass-like in spirit that adds a subtle and refined holiday note. Two limited editions shades of Rouge G diffuse subtly sparkling golden reflections over elegant nude and gentle rosewood. It has the radiance of gold, just enough to bring out a glowing smile over an evening of celebrations. Limited edition shades: #11 Grace and #12 Gems.
KissKiss Gloss ($29.00)
Extreme shine and radiant colours mark this holiday season with lip gloss shades that are as scintillating on the lips as embroidered gems on a precious fabric. This clever gloss may be used on bare lips or as a top coat to boost the effects of Rouge G. KissKiss Gloss gets an extravagant boost by multiplying glitter effects with three limited shades: #807 Perle de Lune, #808 Ambre Précieuse and #809 Rubis Rose.
SHALIMAR LIMITED HOLIDAY EDITION — “Birds of Paradise” ($100.00)
With jealous secrecy the pair guards the fragrant essence of this eternal love story. Between floral and amber notes, it comes to life in the freshness of flowers, delicately powdered by iris and intoxicated with jasmine and rose, before giving into the suave softness of vanilla and the delectability of tonka bean.
Guerlain has imagined a legendary décor to accompany the new opus of Eau de Parfum Shalimar. The slender silhouette of the perfume’s two guardian angels throws a matte shadow outline against the night-blue backdrop of the box, illuminated by the gentle shimmer of the golden logo. The bottle’s feminine shoulders appear bathed in glossy moonlight, wearing a sophisticated silk feather draping around the neck, held in place by a blue satin ribbon. The Oiseau de Paradis signature is inscribed in golden ink with light, slender handwriting, resembling the creatures that have inspired it. A sort of invitation to a mirage, in which dreams could take flight into the evening light, rising towards other tales that Shalimar may soon whisper to us in our sleep…Shalimar Birds of Paradise
limited holiday edition
Availability: Guerlain’s Holiday Colour collection and Shalimar limited edition are available beginning October 2009 at select Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sephora, Bloomingdales and Bergdorf Goodman stores.
Guerlain: Tsarina Eyeshadow Palette
Guerlain Tsarina Eyeshadow Palette ($58.00) from their fall collection is one of two palettes released (the other is Brun Mordore). Guerlain also released an Eye & Lip Palette called Volga Princess (which I haven’t seen yet).
Tsarina includes four shades: a coppery peach, an amber-copper, a raspberry burgundy, and a cool-toned purple-wine. The first three shades have great color pay off, but the darkest purple shade is on the sheerer side (but I wouldn’t call it sheer–it does give me decent color, just not great like the other three). All four have Guerlain’s amazing texture: soft, silky, and so, so easy to blend. The shimmer is subtle and not too frosty–very wearable. I found the mix of shades very appropriate for the fall season, too.
Some might not like that there’s not a real highlighter shade within the palette; the lightest shade is much bolder than most would choose for a highlighter. It’s not a big deal to me, because I very rarely use palettes by themselves unless I’m trying to show what you can do with *just* the palette.
Value wise? The eyeshadows are, by the ounce, the same price as MAC eyeshadows are. In a Guerlain eyeshadow palette, you get about 6.7 oz. of actual eyeshadow product for your money. Like their mega-giant single shadows, they’re a good value by weight, but they do require a larger up front investment. The packaging is luxe and solid; it doesn’t feel cheap, and there’s some heft to it. I love the design on the velvet pouch and on the case itself, which is special to this collection.
- Product: 9/10
- Value: 8/10
- Ease of Use: 8/10
- Packaging: 8/10
Recommendation: Guerlain fans will not be disappointed in the quality of this eyeshadow palette–if you enjoy these shades, I recommend it!

The Best of Guerlain
Guerlain is a brand that always steals my heart. It has that combination of luxe and quality that I find hard to resist! These are a few of their can’t-be-missed products…
- Guerlain Eyeshadow Palette ($58.00) are well-pigmented palettes that feature four eyeshadows that work well together. I love Bronze Dore! So pretty!
- Guerlain Meteorites Powder ($53.00) is a soft shimmery highlighter that is fun to use and works really well to add a subtle glow to cheeks and face without highlighting imperfections because the shimmer is so fine.
- Guerlain KissKiss Gloss ($29.00) is one of my favorite gloss formulas! (It’s pretty much tied with YSL’s Golden Gloss.) Soft, shimmer makes every color have the appearance of shimmering water. I love shades like Fraise a Croquer and Rose Florida. They’re a great non-sticky gloss that doesn’t dry out your lips and lets your lips shine.
- Guerlain KissKiss Lipstick ($30.00) comes in a large variety of shades, so you’re bound to find at least one (if not far too many) that suit your tastes. They’re creamy, long-wearing lipsticks that feel hydrating and luxe on lips. One of my favorite lipstick formulas — Rouge G and YSL’s Rouge Volupte top it, but only slightly.
- Guerlain Terracotta Loose Powder Kohl Liner ($34.00) are long-wearing loose kohls that can be worn on the water line without causing aggravation. I only wish they made more colors!
- Guerlain ‘Blush 4 Eclats’ Sculpting Blush ($48.00) are silky smooth powder blush compacts with four different shades designed to be used together with one sweep from left to right and then applied to cheeks. Whether you use that method or swirl them together, you’ll come up with something gorgeous. I love every single one they have out (I believe it’s six), but my favorites are Soleil Couchant and Rose Plein Vent.
- Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder ($46.00) is a silky smooth bronzing powder that applies easily and nearly effortlessly. It is just a sheer shade that works well to give you a natural looking sunkissed glow. No orange here!
What are some of your favorite Guerlain products?
Guerlain – Ombre Eclat Duo & Liner – Product Photos & Swatches
Guerlain Eyeshadow Duo & Liners ($54.00) come in seven different varieties: L’Heure Brune, L’Heure D’Ambre, L’Heure Rose, L’Heure Fumee, L’Heure Bleue, L’Heure Bronze, and L’Heure de Nuit. Each features two eyeshadows and a coordinating liner. While the shadows are absolutely fantastic — smooth, silky, pigmented — the liner is not nearly as amazing. It can be a little stiff to work with, so you need to dig into the product a bit to get to the underside, which is a bit creamier.
When a quad of eyeshadows goes for $58, I’m hard-pressed to recommend picking up any of these (even though the eyeshadows in it are larger than the quad-sized shadows, it’s still not a great buy). My favorites were L’Heure Bronze and L’Heure Brune, both wearable and easy to use.

Guerlain – Eyeshadow Palettes – Product Photos & Swatches
Guerlain Eyeshadow Palettes ($58.00 each) feel and look like a luxury product. The compact looks like gold, and it has a good amount of weight to it, which adds to that luxe feel. Each palette consists of four eyeshadows; two are stronger colors, while two are more neutral. There are six palettes altogether (not including limited edition releases): Turquoise Cendre, Violette du Soir, Rose Boise, Bronze Dore, Corail Ambre, and Perle d’Argent.
All of the shadows are smooth, silky soft, and well-pigmented. They go on like butter, and they last well even without a base. My absolute favorite was Bronze Dore, but I’m a sucker for greens, so is it really a surprise? I also loved the colors from Corail Ambre, because I felt they were extremely wearable and perfect for summer.
