Fyrinnae Nordic Angel Powder Blush
Fyrinnae Nordic Angel Powder Blush

Fyrinnae Nordic Angel Powder Blush ($6.50 for 0.21 oz./6 grams) is described as a “vibrant pinky-peach blush.” It’s a warm-toned, pink-tinged peach with a barely-there satin finish. Charlotte Tilbury Ecstasy (P) is more shimmery. Tarte Darling (LE) is less pink. MAC Lured to Love (LE, $25.00) is lighter, pinker. Illamasqua Sleek (P, $26.00) is darker, a cream product. MAC Passion for Colour (LE, $21.00) is similar. Edward Bess Secret Affair (P, $43.00) is slightly pinker. Dior Pink Glow Blush (LE) is darker. See comparison swatches.

You may have seen this when I reviewed Winter Romance yesterday, and since so many of you asked about it, I tested it straight away. It’s a new shade for their winter collection, and it’s available in full-size or sample size ($1.75), and I bought just the sample size, which should yield plenty of uses. Also, worth noting, it is listed as lip-safe but not eye-safe. The finish is incredibly well-done; it’s almost matte but has just enough luminosity that it looks like the skin’s natural dewiness when applied. The more you buff and blend the blush into the skin, the more it comes out. It’s quite pigmented, and I preferred to lightly tap out some of the loose blush color into the lid, and then pick up the color with my brush from there. The texture is soft, finely-milled, and easy to blend on the skin. It wore well for almost eight hours on me.

Fyrinnae Winter Romance Lip Lustre
Fyrinnae Winter Romance Lip Lustre

Fyrinnae Winter Romance Lip Lustre ($7.00 for 0.27 fl. oz.) is described as a “rich, velvety dark red.” It’s a medium-dark red with subtle, warm undertones, and a soft shine. Tom Ford Beauty Rouge Fatal (LE, $49.00) is a touch brighter and warmer. Marc Jacobs Beauty Showstopper (134) (P, $30.00) is also a bit warmer, slightly brighter.MAC Night to Remember (LE, $15.00) is lighter. Givenchy Grenat Initie (307) (P, $36.00) is a smidgen brighter. NARS Majella (P, $25.00) is more matte. Guerlain Luxure (P, $49.50) is slightly darker. See comparison swatches.

The Lip Lustre formula is supposed to be “non-sticky lipcolour, nearly as solid as a lipstick, leaving rich colour on your lips but no goopy tackiness.” They come in lipgloss tubes, but they’re more like a liquid lipstick than a gloss. They can also be purchased as in a trial size (1.5ml vs. 8ml) for $2.00, which, honestly, is plenty of product given how pigmented the shades can be! Winter Romance had mostly opaque color, but there was an all-over translucency that enabled some of the natural color to peek through. It applied evenly, and the color looked smooth on the lips. The consistency is lightweight, lightly creamy, and comfortable to wear. This shade wore well for six hours and left behind a stain that continued going for another two hours. However, after four hours of wear, it started to settle into lip lines somewhat. It was neither drying nor hydrating when worn. I didn’t notice any scent or taste.

Illamasqua Apocalips Lipstick Sleek Sunset Eyeshadow Palette Inglot #434 Marc Jacobs Th(ink) Giorgio Armani #701 Giorgio Armani #701 NARS Taj Mahal Cult Nails You're My Dandy Lion Fyrinnae Parental Advisory OCC Jubilee Illamasqua Stranger

October is a time that reminds me to be brave; to not be afraid of bold, unusual colors. Halloween is an often excuse to play with color in ways we’ve never felt comfortable doing so the rest of the year, but it also serves as a great reminder to: experiment more. play more. go outside of our comfort zone. embrace the unknown. thirst for something different. These are a few of my favorite more unique and unusual shades that I’ve come across, and I hope you’ll share your own unusual finds with me!

  1. Illamasqua Apocalips is a vivid, medium-dark blue-teal with a matte finish. I love the unusual color, but what I love even more is that it still applies and wears fairly well. It’s definitely a show-stopping color!
  2. Sleek Sunset Palette is a budget-friendly palette that’s top-to-bottom fantastic. No duds in the bunch; not only is this a feat for an eyeshadow palette in general, but to do so at under $15? It’s quite unusual!
  3. Inglot #434 is a cool-toned, purplish taupe–a glorious mix of purple, gray, and brown for something infinitely complex, bold but neutral.
  4. Marc Jacobs Beauty Th(ink) is a bold, cool-toned violet purple with a pearly shimmer that really opens up the eye–and it is a shade that had many, many readers asking, “What are you wearing?” Purple eyeliners that can be applied with opaque, rich color are hard to come by, but Th(ink) makes a strong case for one that does.
  5. Giorgio Armani #701 is a cool-toned, sheer bluish-purple gloss filled with blue and violet shimmer. It’s very intriguing on its own, but it can be layered over lipstick for a different look.
  6. NARS Taj Mahal is bold, bright, but not totally over-the-top, and it’s more of a tangerine than a full-on orange with red tones, so it has more golden, yellowy undertones.
  7. Cult Nails You’re My Dandy Lion is a warm, buttery yellow with a cream finish–and lo and behold, it applies beautifully. It’s practically a unicorn among polish!
  8. Fyrinnae Parental Advisory is a bold, bright, royal purple like I haven’t seen before. It’s so vibrant and pigmented–if you are a fiend for purple eyeshadow, it is a must-have.
  9. OCC Jubilee is a pale, aqua-green with a blue-purple duochrome. It’s metallic, shimmering, and reflective. I love the way the color shifts as you move, as it is layered over other products, and will lean one way or another depending on what is paired with.
  10. Illamasqua Stranger is a green-ish gold gloss with a high-shine finish, lots of metallic shimmer, and it is a shade that changes as you move.

I hope you’ll consider sharing your must-haves for October in the comments! Here’s a quickie list to get you started…

The one color that always tugs at my heart-strings is molten gold–that really rich, warm, almost orange-toned, shade of gold. It’s deep, rich, and pure luxury to me. I have so many favorites, but here are five permanent picks from me! (But Urban Decay Honey Eyeliner will always be a shade I miss desperately.)

  1. Inglot #430 — a rich, yellow gold with a frosted, metallic sheen–this eyeshadow has an incredible texture
  2. OCC Triptych — a vibrant, metallic gold for your lips (but if full intensity isn’t your thing, try it patted over a burgundy or red!)
  3. NARS Iskandar — a phenomenally pigmented cream eyeliner/eyeshadow with a gorgoeus finish
  4. Fyrinnae Aztec Gold — an intensely pigmented, dirty gold–I thought I’d throw one in that wasn’t quite as warm-toned that still held a lot of depth
  5. Sephora Girls Night Out — a rich, warm-toned gold with an orange-brown undertone and a frosted finish

Do you have any shades of molten gold?

Fyrinnae Meerkat Pressed Eyeshadow
Fyrinnae Meerkat Pressed Eyeshadow

Fyrinnae Meerkat Pressed Eyeshadow ($9.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “vibrant pink-purple with gold shimmer and sparkle highlight.” It’s a plummy purple with gold shimmer and sparkle. It had good color payoff applied dry as well as over Pixie Epoxy. The texture was fairly soft, though it had quite a bit of sparkle, so it wasn’t perfectly smooth. MAC Double Feature #1 #2 is darker, more plum. Buxom Schnauzer is similar, slightly more muted. OCC Overlook is darker. Inglot #445 is similar but less gold shimmer. See comparison swatches.

Meerkat Eyeshadow ($6.25 for 0.07 oz.) is the original (and loose) version of this shade. I did find there to be a noticeable and significant color difference between the pressed and loose versions. The loose version is purpler–less plum, less warm-toned. The loose version is nicely pigmented, though, and it also applied more smoothly than the pressed version. Dior Lilas Mitzah is purpler, cooler-toned. Sugarpill Hysteric is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches.

Both shades wore well without creasing or fading over an eight-and-a-half-hour period without any primer; and I had similar wear when I used it with Pixie Epoxy (which isn’t a primer). I noticed slight fall out over time with both shades when worn without Pixie Epoxy, but there was just a couple of stray sparkles when applied over Pixie Epoxy.  Neither pressed or loose is listed as long-wearing and are recommended to be worn with primer and Pixie Epoxy to maximize wear.

I love a good purple, but a good purple isn’t always easy to be found–especially in eyeliner or eyeshadow form, as they are often less pigmented, but these are all shades that are full of pigment!

  1. Illamasqua Jo’mina — a brightened, lavender purple with a cream finish for tips and toes
  2. Fyrinnae Parental Advisory — a rich, vibrant cool-toned purple with a frosted finish for eyes
  3. Milani Perfect Purple — a shimmery purple eyeliner that won’t let you down
  4. Make Up For Ever #92 — a bold purple with a matte finish — famous for a reason
  5. Zoya Suri — a metallic-shimmered violet purple for tips and toes

What’s the brightest/most vibrant purple you own?
