Power Mode (410)

Estee Lauder Power Mode (410) Hi-Lustre Pure Color Envy Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark pink with subtle, warm undertones and fine lighter pink and warmer pink pearl. This shade had less shimmer than a lot of the other shades, but it also seemed to apply more evenly and have greater coverage (which you may prefer, though the formula is supposed to be medium in coverage). The texture was lightly creamy with just a touch of slip, but it didn’t slide around and lasted for a solid four and a half hours.

Bold Innocent (210)

Estee Lauder Bold Innocent (210) Hi-Lustre Pure Color Envy Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium pink with subtle, warm undertones and fine, gold pearl. The finish had a noticeable pearl and light sheen to it, but it wasn’t too emollient or slippery on the lips as it had a very light tackiness to it overall. The texture was on the thinner side but not clingy, and it was comfortable to wear, though I noticed some color slipped into lip lines over time. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which a bit more than medium described. This shade wore well for four and a half hours and was moisturizing.

Best Lipsticks | Holiday 2016 Gift Guide

It’s that time of the year again:  holiday gift guides aplenty!  This year, I’ve broken out my gift guides into best of selections for blush, eyeshadow, highlighter, lipstick, lipgloss, palettes, and brushes.  These guides feature permanent formulas so that they can be useful anytime during the holiday season or even into next year.  For limited edition holiday products, you can check out our list of the top 50 highest-rated holiday products, which updates as I post more reviews for holiday products. Here’s a look at the best lipstick formulas I’ve tried:

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($26.00 for 0.15 oz.) is supposed to have “bold, creamy color” with “extreme moisture, soft texture, and creamy wear.” The majority of the range is very pigmented–typically opaque with one pass–with a few shades being semi-opaque but usually buildable. The majority of the shades I’ve tested have been lightly hydrating to non-drying and fairly comfortable to wear for the long-haul. They wear longer than average, from four to eight hours, depending on the intensity and propensity of the shade to stain. The range is rather extensive with over 30 shades, so you may find our top 15 best Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipsticks list useful. Some of my favorite shades are: Pickled Ginger, Kale, Sour Cherry, and Spritzer.

Estee Lauder x Victoria Beckham

NET-A-PORTER, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and The Bay have launched the collection this morning.  As of this posting, I have only seen the Modern Mercury Highlighter in stock on NET-A-PORTER and The Bay.

Edited at 9:23AM PST: Reader LaMaitresse noted the collection is at The Bay as well.

The collection is supposed to be available today at maccosmetics.com for all customers.  MAC updated press information yesterday stating that the collection will be available in all stores on October 6th.  (I’d still double-check and call your local store, if you can, especially if it’s a long drive.)  Retailers like Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillards, Bloomingdale’s, and Saks are supposed to have the collection online on October 3rd, per MAC’s tweet below:

Here’s a look at how the products I tried from the new Estee Lauder x Vicoria Beckham Collection performed!  My personal favorites are the Modern Mercury Highlighter and Eye Palette.

There are a few remaining pieces available via Bergdorf Goodman and most through Selfridges, while Saks has the collection available for pre-order.  Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and NET-A-PORTER are also supposed to launch the collection on October 1st.

EYE INK

Estee Lauder x Victoria Beckham Black Myrrh Eye Ink ($45.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a deep black with silver sparkle. Buxom Black Tie (LE, $12.00) is warmer (95% similar). Anastasia Midnight (P, $12.00) is more muted, less shimmery (90% similar). Estee Lauder Burnt Anise (LE, $36.00) is glossier, more shimmery (90% similar). Dior Eternal Gold #5 (LE) is warmer, more muted (90% similar). Colour Pop Shameless (P, $5.00) is cooler, darker (90% similar). Lancome The New Black (P, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). City Color Oh So Naughty (P, $6.99) is less shimmery (90% similar). Make Up For Ever D104 Black Diamond (P, $21.00) is warmer, darker (85% similar). CoverGirl Molten Black (300) (P, $4.99) is darker (85% similar). Colour Pop Raven (LE, $5.00) is warmer, darker, less shimmery (85% similar). MAC Jet Couture (P, $21.00) is warmer, more shimmery (80% similar). Chanel Mirifique (P, $32.00) is warmer, darker (80% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Black Oyster (Cream) (LE, $45.00) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

It is supposed to be a “pressed gel-creme formula” with “deep, rich” pigmentation. It actually felt similar to the Eye Metals to the touch, but the ingredient list shows them to be different, and it did feel creamier and more like a cream-based product than a powder one. I think it is the density and lack of glossiness/a lot of slip that made it seem less like a traditional cream eyeshadow. It lasted for seven hours before starting to crease on me, and when I tried it as an eyeliner, it was harder to apply with the same intensity as when I used a flatter, wider brush (doesn’t seem to play well with finer brushes), but it lasted a bit longer at eight hours. It was richly pigmented and blendable on the skin.

EYE FOIL

Estee Lauder x Victoria Beckham Burnt Anise Eye Foil ($36.00 for 0.24 fl. oz.) is an inky, bluish-black with silver and teal sparkle paired with a metallic sheen. Buxom Black Tie (LE, $12.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Estee Lauder Black Myrrh (LE, $45.00) is less glossy, less shimmery (90% similar). CoverGirl Molten Black (300) (P, $4.99) is warmer, darker (90% similar). Lancome The New Black (P, $19.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Colour Pop Shameless (P, $5.00) is warmer (90% similar). City Color Oh So Naughty (P, $6.99) is less shimmery (90% similar). Anastasia Midnight (P, $12.00) is warmer, lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Mirifique (P, $32.00) is warmer, darker (85% similar). Dior Eternal Gold #5 (LE) is lighter, less shimmery (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

The formula is supposed to have “high-shine” and give a “liquid-metal effect.” It’s very thin, almost water-like, and applies better to my arm/hand than to my eye when used with the included doe-foot applicator. I had a little more luck using a flat, synthetic brush, but it is so thin that trying to blend and spread the product across the skin’s surface did more to some product but not all, which resulted in an uneven layer of coverage. It had a longer drying time, so it easily migrated into creases when I used it alone, and it had a tendency to cause underlying products to crease if used as more than just a dab (like patting on top of an eyeshadow with your fingertip). I also experienced some burning sensation as it was drying down. Once it dried down, it was fairly smudge-proof and budge-proof; it took a lot of rubbing with my fingertip (against my hand) to get any transfer, and it was mostly shimmer. I saw only a few sparkles that had dropped over time, and it didn’t seem to crease further once it dried down — it’s just more finicky to avoid the creasing in the first place.
