Dior Holiday 2015 Collection

Dior Holiday 2015 Color Collection
Dior Holiday 2015 Color Collection

Gold has long been a signature color for the House of Dior. Mr. Dior’s creations incorporated gold in various ways, whether as an opulent adornment on a timeless Dior Grey Bar Suit or in a complete ensemble. Today, looks created by Raf Simons for Dior feature metallic, subtle gold elements to balance audacious shades of red, pink, fuchsia, or silver. Now, Peter Philips has combined the storied history of Dior Gold and Dior Grey with the modern incarnations of these elegant shades to create a limited edition color collection for holiday. Philips’ vision of gold and radiance incorporates the emblematic Dior Grey with gold to create a subtle, delicate hybrid. This modern shade of Grey-Gold mixes seamlessly with more intense shades of radiant reds and pinks and delicate, shimmering nudes for an urban yet sophisticated look.

Eyes are imagined in iridescent and metallic effects, from shimmering grey-gold contrasting with warmer hues of soft burgundy and pale pink, to elegant champagne complemented by regal purple. Lips pop in moisture-rich matte shades of vibrant pink, rosewood, deep red, and fresh pink, while nails complete the look in shades of grey iridescent gold, blazing red, burgundy and sparkling glitter gold. The complexion is luminous, highlighted by shades of golden beige.

Dior has created four must-have It Shades and corresponding Vernis shades to illustrate the new Dior Addict Lipstick Collection. Be Dior is an audacious raspberry inspired by the emblematic rose of the House of Dior, Wonderful is a fresh baby pink created in tribute to Monsieur Dior’s declaration that pink is a shade that can be worn “at any hour,” Smile is a versatile pinky nude that creates an illuminating, natural effect on the lips and Tribale is a pearly coral reminiscent of Monsieur Dior’s classic pearl accents. Dior Eclectic (866) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Eclectic (766) Eyeshadow Palette
Dior Eclectic (766) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Eclectic (766) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a muted, smoky set of shades ranging from a pinky-beige to deep purple. I loved the color combination put together here, as using the blackened green made for an interesting time, but the quality just isn’t there. I wish the eyeshadows were softer and less dry, even if they were sheerer, but the thinner, dusty texture made for a lot of extra work to really blend and diffuse the eyeshadows on the lid.

Eclectic #1 a medium-dark eggplant purple with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. There’s a dusting of fine shimmer on it, but it’s really hard to see applied. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque coverage with a really dusty consistency that made for tougher application and blending. It wore for seven and a half hours before fading. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit No. 16 (LE) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Delectable (P, $16.00) is warmer, darker (95% similar). Guerlain Boulevard du Montparnasse #6 (LE) is darker (90% similar). Viseart Dark Matte #6 (P) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Mulled Wine (LE) is darker (90% similar). Hourglass Exposure #2 (P) is darker (90% similar). Chanel Delicatesse #4 (LE) is warmer, more shimmery (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #2 is a sofot, light pinky-beige with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a thin, dusty texture but applied well, even though it only lasted for seven hours on me. MAC Pretty (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Call Me Bubbles (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Kat Von D Moz (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). Dior Exuberante #2 (LE) is less shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced Smitten (P) is cooler, darker (90% similar). Colour Pop Cop-a-Feel (DC, $5.00) is lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Sensation (102) (LE, $29.50) is darker (90% similar). LORAC Soft Plum (LE, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Laura Mercier Vanilla Kiss (LE, $23.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Kat Von D Lucius (P) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Nubile (DC, $18.00) is darker (85% similar). Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky #1 (P) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #3 is a brightened, light silver with a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth consistency that didn’t get powdery or too dense to work with. There is an overspray, so it appears more metallic in the pan or if swatched without removing the overspray (I always take a brush to the surface and get rid of any oversprays first before swatching). It stayed on well for seven and a half hours. Make Up For Ever ME202 Iceberg Blue (P, $21.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Kat Von D Holy Bible (DC) is less shimmery (95% similar). Viseart Sterling (P) is brighter (95% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Oyster Mushroom (LE) is more muted, darker (90% similar). Inglot #447 (P, $6.00) is brighter (90% similar). NARS Flowers 3 #1 (LE, $25.00) is darker (90% similar). theBalm #34 (P, $6.50) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Guerlain Crazy Paris #3 (LE) is more muted (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP Pretty in Paris (LE, $9.99) is darker (90% similar). Disney by Sephora Your Voice (LE) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Starry Night #1 (P) is more muted, darker (90% similar). Guerlain Les Aquas #4 (P) is cooler, darker (90% similar). MAC Guise (LE, $21.00) is darker (85% similar). MAC Virgin Silver (LE) is darker (85% similar). NARS Silver Factory (LE, $24.00) is darker, more shimmery (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #4 is a deepened–but muted–green with fine green shimmer over a mostly matte finish. Applied, it looks mostly matte as the shimmer doesn’t seem to bind with the base product. It had good pigmentation and blended out fairly well while lasting for eight hours. LORAC Forest (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). theBalm #3 (P, $6.50) is lighter (95% similar). LORAC Black Ivy (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Punk (P, $16.00) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). Chanel L'Intemporel de Chanel #2 (LE) is lighter (90% similar). Makeup Geek Envy (P, $6.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). NARS Shade V (LE, $25.00) is warmer (85% similar). NARS Snake Eyes (P, $25.00) is darker, more shimmery (85% similar). MAC Eat, Love (LE, $16.00) is darker (85% similar). bareMinerals Utopia (P) is warmer, darker (85% similar). Chanel Tisse Venitien #4 (P) is warmer, more shimmery (85% similar). Giorgio Armani Emeraude (04) (P, $39.00) is lighter, more shimmery (85% similar). Viseart Dark Matte #11 (P) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #5 is a blackened purple with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff with a dry, dusty consistency that made blending more difficult as the color would look patchy and uneven. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me. Chanel Oiseaux de Nuit #3 (LE) is warmer (95% similar). Too Faced Meow! (LE, $16.00) is lighter, more shimmery (95% similar). bareMinerals Center Stage (P) is cooler (95% similar). Too Faced Jungle Love (LE, $16.00) is better quality, cooler, brighter (95% similar). Too Faced Huckleberry (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Night Owl #7 (P) is warmer (90% similar). Dior Precious Embroidery #5 (LE) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Disney by Sephora Wonder by Wonder (LE) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). NARS Arabian Nights #1 (LE, $25.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Tisse Beverly Hills #4 (P) is cooler, darker (90% similar). Too Faced Amorous (P) is warmer, darker (90% similar). MAC Indigo Blend #3 (LE) is lighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit No. 18 (LE) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Tarte Glamorous (LE) is brighter (90% similar). MAC Pinkluxe #5 (P) is more shimmery (90% similar). Colour Pop Straight Trippin' (LE, $5.00) is brighter, lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Dior Exuberante (766) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Exuberante (766) Eyeshadow Palette
Dior Exuberante (766) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Exuberante (766) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a set of five eyeshadows ranging from pale peach to shimmery, navy blue. It’s not the worst palette I’ve come across from Dior, but it had that signature miss–rich blue eyeshadow–that really brought down the palette as a whole, though the other four shades were okay but nothing impressive.

Exuberante #1 is a soft, medium-dark taupe brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a satin finish. It had so-so color payoff with a lightly powdery texture that didn’t adhere as well to the skin without a base. The color blended out well, and it lasted for seven and a half hours for me. Chanel Signe Particulier #2 (LE) is darker (95% similar). LORAC Black #6 (LE, $19.00) is darker (95% similar). Tarte Power Player (LE) is darker (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Chino (LE, $22.00) is warmer, darker (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Unabashed Eyeshadow #2 (LE) is darker, less shimmery (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Exuberante #2 is a soft, light pink-peach with a fine gold pearl. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that ran a little dusty. It wore for seven and a half hours on me. Tarte What a Wonderful Pearl (LE) is lighter (95% similar). Tarte Blush Stilettos (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). Chanel Tisse Cambon #2 (P) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Too Faced Smitten (P) is darker (95% similar). Dior Eclectic #2 (LE) is more shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Tisse Riviera #2 (P) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Strange (P, $19.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Sensibility (LE, $16.00) is cooler (85% similar). Urban Decay Dope (LE, $19.00) is darker, more shimmery (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Exuberante #3 is a light-medium gold with subtler, warm undertones and a lightly frosted finish. In the pan, it looks metallic, but it is primarily an overspray and the underlying color is a lot less shimmery. It had good pigmentation with a lightly dusty consistency that made it harder to achieve true-to-pan color on the lid without it sheering out. It wore for seven and a half hours before I noticed fading. YSL Rosy Glow #2 (P) is less shimmery (95% similar). Colour Pop High Tide (DC, $5.00) is lighter (95% similar). YSL Golden Glow #2 (P) is lighter (95% similar). Guerlain Calligraphy #1 (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). Lancome Filigree (P, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Chanel Entrelacs #1 (LE) is lighter (90% similar). Kat Von D Telepathy (P) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Snow (LE, $19.00) is brighter, darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Anastasia Beigely (LE, $12.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Photosphere (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Natasha Denona Cream (21S) (P, $29.00) is lighter (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Exuberante #4 is a deepened navy blue with subtle, satiny shimmer over a mostly matte finish. It was very powdery and dry, so it sheered out a lot and was difficult to layer. It could have blended more easily, though a lot of the color seemed to disperse in the air if you made sweeping motions. It lasted for six and a half hours on me. Urban Decay Goddess (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Royally Blue (LE, $22.00) is cooler, lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). Viseart Sapphire (P) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Kat Von D Estrella (LE) is brighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Metamorphose (44) #4 (LE) is cooler, brighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Cobalt Rush #3 (P) is more shimmery (90% similar). NARS Arcturus (P, $29.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). LORAC Navy #6 (LE, $19.00) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Colour Pop Etiquette (DC, $5.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Minuit (02) (P, $39.00) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Exuberante #5 is a muted, dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen paired with very, very fine shimmer. It had good pigmentation with a lightly dusty texture that made blending more challenging–it tended to stick where it went initially and was less easily diffused as a result. The color lasted for seven and a half hours. Too Faced Yule Log (LE, $16.00) is warmer, more shimmery (95% similar). YSL Saharienne #3 (P) is warmer (95% similar). Dior Precious Embroidery #4 (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). bareMinerals Toasted Espresso (LE, $14.00) is warmer (95% similar). NARS Ithaca (LE, $25.00) is warmer, less shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Warm (Winter 2016) Eyeshadow #4 (LE) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). LORAC Black #5 (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Cocktail Black (LE, $16.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Lancome Audacious (P, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Constructivist (DC, $18.00) is darker (90% similar). Dior Parisian Sky #5 (LE) is darker (90% similar). MAC Smut (P, $16.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Constructivist (P, $18.50) is darker (90% similar). YSL Rosy Glow #3 (P) is lighter, less shimmery (90% similar). Tarte Bastille in the Night (LE) is warmer, darker (90% similar). MAC Brawn (LE, $16.00) is lighter (85% similar). Dior Fairy Golds #5 (LE) is warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Dior Addict Fluid Shadows

Dior Dior Addict Fluid Shadow
Dior Dior Addict Fluid Shadow

Dior Addict Fluid Shadow ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a new, limited edition liquid eyeshadow formula available in five shades. It’s supposed to be a “lightweight, fluid eye shadow” that can be used “as a liner or as allover shadow” that is long-wearing with “enamel shine.” If you’re not a fan of liquid eyeshadow, I don’t suspect these will be converting you any time soon. The texture is thin and watery. They’re very, very difficult to work with, and they do not layer, blend, or dry down well on the lid; they tend to crack and flake off in chunks. If you attempt to layer, the next layer will lift the color underneath it, and the second layer won’t stick to anything. The only way to wear these was by applying a small dab on the center of lid and then using a fingertip to blend to the point where the color wasn’t noticeable and only some shimmer remained. I don’t recommend using the applicator, as it applies a lot of product and makes it difficult to achieve precision. These were a complete disappointment with no redeeming qualities.

Dior Cosmic (275) Dior Addict Fluid Shadow ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark plum with warm undertones and lighter violet pearl. When swatched, it looks much more vibrant and purple-like, but it doesn’t show up as opaque color and the sheered out color is much darker and warmer–more subdued and easier to dupe. I couldn’t build up the color without lifting up the initial layer simultaneously, and it was very hard to diffuse any of the edges. The product flaked off in significant chunks after six hours. City Color Gypsy (P, $6.99) is more shimmery (90% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Overlook (P, $14.00) is cooler, less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Trusted Instinct #3 (LE) is warmer, less shimmery (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP A Vow in Venice (LE, $9.99) is cooler, less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Can't Stop, Won't Stop (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). NARS Desdemona (P, $29.00) is warmer, less shimmery (90% similar). Buxom Wild Nights (P, $12.00) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Coloured Raine Queen Mother (LE, $6.99) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Shockwave (P, $20.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Make Up For Ever ME840 Pink Chrome (P, $21.00) is lighter, more shimmery (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Dior Phenix (545) Dior Addict Fluid Shadow ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a brightened, light-medium yellow gold with a sparkly, metallic sheen. It looked chunky applied and settled into the lines on my lid (which I wouldn’t consider having that many of!), and it dried unevenly so it would look thicker/raised in places. The sparkle fell out after four hours, while chunks came off after six hours of wear. Lancome Eternal Gold (P, $24.50) is darker, less shimmery (95% similar). L'Oreal Gold Imperial (LE, $7.99) is cooler, darker (95% similar). L'Oreal Eternal Sunshine (P, $7.99) is darker (95% similar). Rouge Bunny Rouge Golden Rhea (P, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). bareMinerals Hoopla (LE) is darker (90% similar). NARS Studly (LE, $29.00) is more muted, darker (90% similar). Coloured Raine St. Germain Cocktail (P, $6.99) is cooler, more shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Naked Bronze (Eye Color) (LE) is more shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Vision (LE, $32.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Chanel Codes Elegants #1 (P) is cooler (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP Gold Souk (LE, $9.99) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Cushy Life (LE, $22.00) is cooler, lighter (90% similar). Tarte Hype (P) is more shimmery (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Zenith (13) (LE, $39.00) is darker (90% similar). Too Faced Honey Pot (LE, $16.00) is darker (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Muse #3 (LE) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Interstellar (P, $20.00) is cooler, darker (90% similar). Make Up For Ever D410 Gold Nugget (P, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Chanel Rêve d'Orient #3 (LE) is better quality, cooler, darker (90% similar). Too Faced Praline (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Dior Univers (655) Dior Addict Fluid Shadow ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a dark taupe brown with warmer undertones and a cooler overtone. As it was very difficult to achieve opaque color out of it, the sheered out version was much warmer as bronzy gold frost dominated. It dried down quickly and wasn’t capable of being layered. There was flaking within six hours. NARS L'Amour, Toujours L'Amour #3 (LE, $25.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Pastelluxe #5 (P) is darker (90% similar). NARS Stud (LE, $25.00) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Dark Force (P, $20.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). LORAC Chrome (P, $19.00) is cooler, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Angel (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Derailed (LE, $19.00) is cooler, lighter (90% similar). Sephora June Gloom (P, $10.00) is cooler, lighter (90% similar). Make Up For Ever ME554 Gunmetal (P, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). Ardency Inn Hell (P, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury The Rock Chick #2 (P) is cooler, less shimmery (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Fallen Angel #2 (LE) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Underground (DC, $18.00) is darker, less shimmery (90% similar). Zoeva Outline (P) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Force of Nature #2 (LE, $21.00) is cooler, more shimmery (90% similar). MAC A Glimmer of Gold #4 (P, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Resist (LE, $19.00) is warmer, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Vaporize (LE, $19.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Midnight Rodeo (P, $19.00) is darker, more shimmery (90% similar). Maybelline Nude Compliment (90) (LE, $6.99) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Dior Aurora (825) Dior Addict Fluid Shadow ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a light-medium rose gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer, buildable coverage (up to mostly opaque), and it was the only shade that I found could be somewhat layered. It did seem to thicken and emphasize the lid for me, though. It lasted for six hours before flaking off. MAC Mineral Mode (LE, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). NARS Parallel Universe (Left) (LE, $25.00) is lighter, more shimmery (90% similar). Dior Destinee (875) Dior Addict Fluid Shadow ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a deepened burgundy with warm, reddish-brown undertones and lighter plum-burgundy shimmer that gives it a frosted sheen. It dried down quickly and emphasized the texture of the lid, and it was utterly impossible to layer this without it lifting in giant patches. It started to flake off after six hours of wear. Make Up For Ever D826 Fig (P, $21.00) is better quality, more pigmented, lighter (95% similar). Natasha Denona Maroon (22M) (P, $29.00) is cooler, more shimmery (90% similar). I’m not sure about this shade being universally applicable (it’s rare for a product like this to work across all skin tones), as I could see the base color possibly becoming chalky on darker skin tones, so you might want to check it out on-counter if you can. On very fair skin tones, it may add slight warmth and color, while fair to medium-dark will likely see more of a golden sheen without much color. On my medium skin tone, I get a golden glow that makes my cheekbones pop without any noticeable color. It’s a very fine shimmer, so it doesn’t emphasize pores, and the powder’s texture was soft without being powdery. It was one of the better Dior face powders I’ve tested in the last couple of years, so it was a pleasant surprise to try. The highlighter wore well for eight hours on me before fading.
