Cult Nails Passionate Dreams Collection
Cult Nails Passionate Dreams Collection

…She dreamed of the day when she would find him, the one. And find him, she did. He passed her in the park on her morning walk. She’d been watching him as he approached. With his head down and his hands in his pockets, he hadn’t given her so much as a glance. But there he was, the absolute man of her dreams. His stride was flawless and graceful, but manly. His build was average but he carried himself with confidence, not cockiness. And his eyes. Oh his eyes! When he looked up to apologize for almost bumping into her, she could feel his eyes looking deeper into her soul than she ever thought possible. His stare was intense. Heart stopping. Lethal. That was the moment. The feeling his gaze left her with was enough to ignite her passion. Then she felt it. The pounding in her heart. Her breathing became shallow and quick. Her senses were exploding at the thought of him simply speaking to her. Then, it happened. She looked back at him and their eyes met once more. It was undeniable; but as quickly as he approached, he continued on, blending in with the background until he was eventually out of sight.

CULT NAILS™ brings you the PASSIONATE DREAMS collection. With names like LETHAL, IGNITE, ANGEL WHISPERS, and KISS, this collection brings emotions of desire, lust, and passion, and the colors are no exception.

Nail Lacquer ($12.00) (Limited Edition)

Now that 2014 has kicked off, and I’m sure you’ve heard that Pantone’s color of the year is Radiant Orchid.  I know we’ll see plenty of new introductions of the color throughout the year, but I know that we’ve seen the color before–and you may already have some in your stash!  Here are a few of my picks for wearing radiant orchid on your lips or your tips…

What are your favorite orchid-hued lip colors and nail polishes?

Monday, December 30th, 2013

I have to admit: this was a complete challenge. In fact, it felt unfair trying to narrow down favorites to a mere ten when I was considering around 300 different shades from the past year. As what tends to happen when I start to feel indecisive, I went for favorites across brands and weighted uniqueness slightly more heavily than other factors. But there were some really outstanding formulas released this year! At year-end, I have to give major props to Cult Nails and OCC, both of which had a lot of contenders.

What were your favorite polishes you tried this past year?

Cult Nails Blaze Nail Lacquer
Cult Nails Blaze Nail Lacquer

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a Cult Nails’ swatches mega post, as they’ve significantly discounted shades that have now been discontinued but was missing three (and then bought them!).  As promised, here are photos and swatches of those three–they’re still available through 12/31 (or while supplies last).

Cult Nails Blaze Nail Lacquer ($6.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “blend of glowing gold and copper glitter.” It consists of pale gold and copper micro-glitter suspended in a clear base. Two coats could work alone, but it’s better used as a layering top coat–I did one coat over black as an example. Each coat is fairly dense, but the consistency wasn’t too thick to be used as a layering top coat or with two coats of it on its own. Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Charm (112) (P, $18.00) is more metallic, less glittery. China Glaze Electrify (LE, $7.50) has much larger glitter pieces. See comparison swatches.

Mazo Nail Lacquer ($5.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “fair sheer nude with an elegant gold shimmer.” It’s a yellowed beige with fine yellow gold shimmer. It was semi-sheer to semi-opaque on nails after two coats. It applied evenly for the most part, and the consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin. MAC Hangin’ Loose (LE, $16.00) is lighter, more beige. Chanel Beige Petale (LE, $27.00) is sheerer. Rescue Beauty Lounge Ani (LE, $20.00) is less yellow/warm-toned. China Glaze Fast Track (LE, $7.50) is a bit darker and browner. See comparison swatches.

Party Time Nail Lacquer ($7.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as an “intensely pigmented blue creme with a hint of green.” It’s a vibrant, medium blue with a cream finish and natural shine. It was mostly opaque after two coats, but at certain angles, you could see a faint hint of visible nail line. This one will likely stain nails; just swatching this (so it wasn’t on for more than an hour) left behind a slight stain. The consistency was on the thinner side but had no impact on the application. Dior Bahia (792) (LE, $24.00) is darker. Zoya Liberty (P, $8.00) has a matte/glittery texture. NARS Koliary (LE, $19.00) is lighter. Illamasqua Noble (P, $17.00) is also lighter. SpaRitual Ebb & Flow (LE, $10.00) is lighter, brighter. Rescue Beauty Lounge Faraway (LE, $20.00) is lighter, has slight shimmer. Zoya Phoebe (P, $8.00) is matte. See comparison swatches.

Cult Nails Alter Ego Nail Lacquer
Cult Nails Alter Ego Nail Lacquer

Cult Nails is having a “warehouse clearance” sale of colors that have been discontinued. This post features photos and swatches of shades that are available for $5, 6, or 7 a pop that I haven’t reviewed previously (just got these this week!).  I’ve also included links to all previous shades that are discontinued that I’ve reviewed before.  There are three–Blaze, Mazo, and Party Time–that I don’t have, but I did order them and if I get them before they’re sold for good, I’ll be happy to post.

Baker is described as a “rich butterscotch/tan creme with gold shimmer.” It’s a light-medium, yellow peach with soft gold sparkle. It was semi-opaque after two coats, and application was very slightly streaky at times. See comparison swatches.

Blackout is described as a “deepened slate grey creme.” It’s a deep, dark, soft black–a gray black, if you will–with a cream finish and a glossy shine. It was fully opaque after applying two coats. See comparison swatches.

Swanbourne is described as a “deep, alluring brown creme laced with flashes of golden shimmer.” It’s a rich, chocolate brown with subtle warm, reddish undertones and copper-bronze flecks of shimmer. It was fully opaque in two coats and was a dream to apply and work with. See comparison swatches.

Tulum is described as a “luxurious milk chocolate creme … with gold shimmer.” It’s a medium-dark, muted beige-brown with golden micro-sparkle. It was opaque after two coats of polish, and it applied fairly evenly and smoothly. See comparison swatches.

Doppelganger is described as a “sheer top coat that transforms your existing polish by giving it a ‘dusty’ feel while adding a familiar multi-colored shimmer.” It adds a layer of bluish-white cloudiness plus multi-colored shimmer–almost looks like a nebula applied over black with a very thin coat. The consistency was on the thicker side, so it can apply too heavily for a layered look. It’s quite pretty on its own, too–reminded me of bridal nails with more oomph.

Alter Ego is described as a “sheer top coat that will cast a gold and green tinge over your polish.” It transforms into a fine shimmer of oiled bronze when layered over another color. I applied one coat over Nevermore, Cult Nails’ black cream.

Deception is described as a “sheer top coat that lays a pink/purple sheen over your existing polish.” Layered over another polish, it adds a fine violet shimmer. I applied one coat over Nevermore, Cult Nails’ black cream.

Two Timer is described as a “sheer top coat that enhances your existing color by casting a beautiful emerald shimmer over it.” It transforms into a fine shimmer of emerald green when layered over another color. I applied one coat over Nevermore, Cult Nails’ black cream.

Additional Discontinued Shades: (Shades I’ve reviewed are linked) Ay Poppy!, Blaze, Center of Attention, Dance All Night, Feelin’ Froggy, Hypnotize Me, In a Trance, Let Me Fly, Mazo, Morning Glory, Party Time, Spontaneous, Walk of Shame, You’re My Dandy Lion

Cult Nails Disillusion Nail Lacquer
Cult Nails Disillusion Nail Lacquer

Cult Nails Disillusion Nail Lacquer ($12.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “black jelly base [with] magenta mylar shreds.” It is a black jelly base with medium to large fuchsia mylar flakes/shreds suspended within it. I don’t have anything quite like it, but NYX Dark Glitter (P, $4.00) contains red glitter suspended in a black jelly base, so it’s possible they have one like that but with fuchsia (but they are not mylar shreds). See comparison swatches.

One of my favorite aspects of smaller businesses, particularly nail lacquer brands, is that they often tell you more about the application and coverage of their polishes, as Cult Nails did here. Maria, the founder, noted two to three coats for it on its own but also recommended one coat over a black polish, but the key is to wait for each coat to dry. In the swatches, my index and middle finger are with two coats, and my ring and pinky have three coats–but it wasn’t fully opaque even with three for me. The very last photo is one coat of Disillusion over Ms. Conduct (not quite black). It’s really, really thick after three full coats, so I would agree/recommend it layered over a black cream for easiest application.  The consistency is thick, even for a jelly, and almost watery but not quite.

Cult Nails Lamestain Nail Lacquer ($12.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “rich, deep, ox blood creme.” It’s a very deep, dark burgundy with cool, pinkish undertones and a cream finish. Urban Decay Wrecked (LE) is similar in color. MAC Purple Majesty (LE, $16.00) is also similar in color. MAC Blueblood (LE, $16.00) is a touch lighter. Rescue Beauty Lounge Drifter (LE, $20.00) is lighter. Color Club Fashion Moment (P) is similar. China Glaze Naughty & Nice (LE, $8.00) is purpler. Zoya Anja (P, $8.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches.

It had a fair amount of shine when it dried down, and it was totally opaque after two coats. The consistency was on the thinner side, both compared to the average polish as well as to Cult Nails’ creams in general, and I think I might have gone three here for more depth/thickness or use a thicker top coat to give it a plusher look. Cult Nails’ formula wears great on me–at least a week with very minor tip wear.

I think it can look really cool/full of depth when it works, but it's not the easiest to apply or to use - if you're happy layering it over a black nail polish, definitely worth checking out, but if you want something on its own, I wouldn't recommend it.
