Clinique Whopping Willow Chubby Stick Shadow Tint ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “golden sage green.” It’s a subtly warm-toned olive green with strong olive/khaki tones and a soft, shimmery finish. MAC Vintage Coin is much darker. Guerlain Coup de Foudre #1 is a powder product and greener. Sephora Snakeskin Dress is a touch greener and a powder product. MAC Sumptuous Olive has a stronger brown undertone and is also a powder eyeshadow. Inglot #433 is ever-so-slightly warmer but is very similar–definitely the closest–though it is a powder product.

I would describe the payoff of Whopping Willow as rather opaque, but it is easy enough to get just a sheer wash of color, but if you were to just do one stroke of the pencil against your arm, it would be semi-opaque.  It builds up color very well, as it doesn’t bunch up on itself, so it goes on smoothly, evenly, and can be built to opaque color.    The consistency is more waxy than it is creamy, which helps it apply color smoothly, but it did tug just a bit at the lid.  Whopping Willow lasted just over ten hours on me, and there was faint creasing after twelve hours. It comes in a twist-up pencil so there’s no sharpening required.

Clinique Roomiest Rose Chubby Stick Intense ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “watermelon rose.” It’s a darkened rose red with a muted quality and subtle warm undertones. Chanel Taffeta Rose is pinker. Elizabeth Arden Perfect Tulip is a touch pinker.  I really wasn’t able to think of many similar shades, and both of the ones I did think about were noticeably pinker.

This shade had full color coverage and great color payoff (though Clinique intended only medium coverage).  The pencil felt balanced between creamy and waxy, so it glided on readily but didn’t feel heavy or apply thickly.  The color stayed put on my lips for four and a half hours, and it was lightly hydrating while worn. I think Roomiest Rose is one of the most wearable shades in the Intense range for all skin tones. It’s not too warm- or cool-toned, and it’s not too bright or too muted.  Against fairer skin, it may be a bolder shade, but the general color is still very every day–with oomph.

Clinique Fuller Fudge Chubby Stick Shadow Tint ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “bronze brown.” It’s a rich, warm bronze with strong red undertones and a frosted finish. Chanel Intuition #4 is a bit browner. MAC Antiqued is more shimmery. Inglot #421 is darker. Giorgio Armani #5 is lighter.

Clinique’s Chubby Stick Shadow Tints are supposed to be a “sheer wash of lightweight, creamy colour.” It’s supposed to be “layerable” and long-wearing, too. Fuller Fudge can be used as a sheer wash of color, but it is absolutely layerable to mostly opaque color. The consistency isn’t wet or slick, but it glides on well enough with little pulling or tugging at the lid. I don’t know that I would describe it was creamy–perhaps almost waxy–because it does smooth on but there’s no real slip or wetness to it.  The formula could be slightly creamier, because then it would be more blendable on the lid and apply more comfortably.  It wore well for ten hours on me; after twelve hours, there was some faint creasing.  The shadow twists-up, so there’s no need for sharpening, which means no waste!

Clinique Plushest Punch Chubby Stick Intense ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “raspberry pink.” It’s a bright, bold raspberry pink with a natural sheen. Tarina Tarantino Fuchsia is darker, redder. MAC Impassioned is brighter. Guerlain Gigi is very comparable.

It has full color coverage, and the pencil has a great consistency–just creamy enough to apply evenly and smoothly but not thick, so it adheres well and doesn’t feather or bleed. I’ve mentioned it before, but it bears repeating: this range is very much an opaque one, though Clinique describes the coverage as “perfectly in between” sheer and opaque. The other issue I’ve had is that these aren’t that moisturizing (some better than others). Plushest Punch was moderately hydrating, and of the ones I’ve tried thus far, it was the most hydrating. It wore long and well, though, topping five hours with a very subtle residual stain that lingered for the next hour.

Clinique Mightiest Maraschino Chubby Stick Intense ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “classic red.” It’s a rich, vibrant cherry red with strong blue undertones and a natural sheen. MAC Ronnie Red is very comparable. Guerlain Calligraphy #5 is pinker. NARS Dragon Girl is darker, bluer-based. MAC Ruby Woo is darker.

It applied evenly and smoothly without tugging or pulling on the lip when applied straight from the pencil. I didn’t experience any feathering or bleeding during the six hours this wore for–and there was a soft red stain left behind that lingered for another hour or so. The consistency is lightweight and thin, but comfortable, as it doesn’t cling and get sucked into the lips. I didn’t find this shade hydrating, though it was not drying.  The color coverage is very nearly opaque, which isn’t quite the “perfect” in-between sheer and opaque as described–so that might be to your advantage or not!

CoverGirl Captivate is a touch less warm-toned. Make Up For Ever #44 is similar. Guerlain Luxure is darker. Guerlain Habit Rouge is also similar.

It delivered mostly opaque color coverage, and the consistency of the pencil was creamy, so it glided on beautifully and evenly. It was lightweight, didn’t cling, and felt comfortable to wear. Chunkiest Chili wore really well, too, clocking in at just under six hours and did leave behind a soft stain. It was lightly hydrating–it won’t replace a good lip balm–but it won’t dry out lips.  I’m not certain why Clinique is touting this formulas having only medium coverage–nearly every single one I’ve tried so far as borderline opaque coverage.
